The California State University, Northridge (CSUN) Oviatt Library was the first library in the world to integrate an automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) into its operations. The AS/RS continues to provide efficient space management for the library. However, added value has been identified in materials security and inventory as well as customer service. The concept of library as space, paired with improved services and efficiencies, has resulted in the AS/RS becoming a critical component of library operations and future strategy. Staffing, service, and security opportunities paired with support and maintenance challenges, enable the library to provide a unique critique and assessment of an AS/RS.

The concept and applications of computerized information systems for the management of urban trees are reviewed. Among their uses are landscape planning, choosing species to be planted, organizing work on trees, departmental planning and evaluation, and public relations. Five types of data required for these purposes pertain to the location of trees, tree characteristics, site characteristics, actions recommended, and work completed. Methods for handling data are reviewed including collection, processing, storage retrieval, and updating. Computer equipment and software options are discussed, particularly microcomputers. Advice is offered on installing a management information system for urban trees and for using it effectively.

AbstractFor a hospital information system, object-oriented methodology plays an increasingly important role, especially for the management of digitized data, e.g., the electrocardiogram, electroencephalogram, electromyogram, spirogram, X-ray, CT and histopathological images, which are not yet computerized in most hospitals. As a first step in an object-oriented approach to hospital information management and storing medical data in an object-oriented database, we connected electrocardiographs to a hospital network and established the integration of ECG storage and retrieval systems with a hospital information system. In this paper, the object-oriented analysis and design of the ECG storage and retrieval systems is reported.

Purpose State-of-the-art cloud applications are problematic for collaborative document management; their current design does not encourage active personal folder categorization. Cloud applications such as Google Drive and Microsoft’s OneDrive store documents automatically, so at no point are users directed to categorize them by placing them in folders. To encourage active categorization and promote effective retrieval of cloud documents, the authors designed an add-on “nudge” called Personal Organizer which prompts Google Drive users to categorize by storing cloud documents in personal folders. The add-on prompt is triggered when users attempt to close uncategorized or unnamed documents. The purpose of this paper is to test whether using the Personal Organizer add-on leads participants to actively store their documents in folders that they personally created, and whether this promotes more successful and efficient retrieval. Design/methodology/approach To test the add-on, the authors conducted a pretest-manipulation-post-test intervention study with 34 participants lasting over three months. In both tests, participants were asked to retrieve personal documents taken from their own “Recents” list to improve ecological validity. Findings Using our add-on doubled the percentage of documents that were actively stored in folders. Additionally, using personally created folders substantially improved retrieval success while decreasing retrieval time. Originality/value Implementing our findings can improve document storage and retrieval for millions of users of collaborative cloud storage. The authors discuss broader theoretical implications concerning the role of active organization for retrieval in collaborative repositories, as well as design implications.

In order to improve the data retrieval and mining ability of agricultural information management system, an agricultural information management data model based on cloud computing and semantic technology was proposed. Fuzzy C-means algorithm is used for adaptive fusion and clustering of semantic association features of distributed data in large-scale information management systems; feature compressors are used to reduce the storage space dimension of large-scale information management system to improve the target data mining capability and adaptive scheduling capability of information management system. The registration rate improves than the traditional method by 12.46% and computational cost by 23.76%. This method has higher accuracy in storage data mining and retrieval for large information management systems and superior performance than the traditional method. The introduction of the concept and technical methods of related data is the best practice to realize the fine disclosure, standardized description, semantic organization, and in-depth integration of massive agricultural science and technology information resources, which will play an important role in improving the visibility, visibility, and accessibility of agricultural information resources. It is innovative in the construction of the multidimensional semantic-related model and field knowledge service system driven by related data.

With the rapid development of cloud computing, massive data are transferred to cloud servers for storage and management savings. For privacy concerns, data should be encrypted before being uploaded. In the encrypted-domain (ED), however, many data computing methods working in the plain-domain are no longer applicable. Data retrieval has become a significant obstacle to cloud storage services. To break through this limitation, we propose a multi-keyword searchable encryption scheme by introducing probability trapdoors. Firstly, a keywords probability trapdoor is established to ensure that the scheme can resist indistinguishable attacks. Based on the keywords trapdoor, we present the keywords vector to make the scheme realize multi-keyword search in the process of data retrieval in the ED. Both security and performance analysis confirm the advantages of the proposed scheme in terms of search functionality and complexity.

AbstractSeveral satellite data receiving and distributing centers across the world support data storage, processing, and retrieval based on satellite, sensor, product, latitude, longitude, date and time, etc. These systems address queries on satellite products that are mostly high-level concepts. A more sophisticated retrieval system that supports ontological concepts, subconcepts, and concept hierarchical queries delivers refined results that broaden the scientific horizon of the application domain. To achieve this, the current research designed and implemented an ontology concept-based satellite data management and retrieval methodology. This enhances the performance of the satellite data retrieval system and supports semantic queries. The performance of the retrieval system depends upon the strategy followed to maintain domain ontologies and satellite data instances. Three ontology-based satellite data management strategies are discussed, and their performance was evaluated by taking real and benchmark metrics. A semantic query set of 25 queries was chosen covering various concepts, subconcepts, and concept hierarchical-related queries that involve various SPARQL query constructs. The test bed is taken from real-time satellite data received from Kalpana-1 of various sizes of triple stores.

Abstract:
Storage devices are rapidly changing, and we need to adapt the OS storage software stack to keep up with the changes. Such a re-evaluation of the storage software stack is especially required for mobile platforms because they are relying on inexpensive flash storage devices having very different performance characteristics from the familiar hard disk.In this thesis work, we first show the importance of storage in mobile platforms; contrary to conventional wisdom, we find evidence that storage is a significant contributor to application performance on mobile devices. Then, we explore the solution space for flash storage; user-level library for selective logging, host-side write buffering layer, and OS buffer replacement scheme for flash storage have been studied. Finally, we build an integrated solution for smartphone storage, named Fjord. In the Fjord study, we re-design logging and RAM buffering solutions for smartphones, and also propose fine-grained reliability control mechanisms. We prove that non-volatile logging can improve storage performance remarkably. Understanding the characteristics of cloud-backed applications and controlling the reliability constraint for chosen cloud-backed applications can achieve additional significant performance gain.We implement and evaluate our solution on a real Android smartphone, and demonstrate significant performance gains for everyday apps on such platforms.

Search is becoming the primary way in which people get information. In 2010, global Internet usage was over two billion people, with 92% of online adults using search engines to find information. Most commercial search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.) provide their indexing and search services at no cost. The DoD can achieve large gains at a small cost by making public documents available to search engines. This can be achieved through the utilization of important design components and effective knowledge management. This thesis examines methods for making information available to search engines at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) and the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC). In a large-scale project, over 200,000 documents were organized on the website dodreports.com. The results of this research revealed improvement gains of 8-20% for finding reports through commercial search engines during the first six months of implementation.

With the implementation and continuing research on information systems, such as Information Technology for the 21st Century (IT-21), Navy-Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI), and "Network-Centric warfare," there is little doubt that the Navy is becoming heavily dependent on information and information systems. Though much has been accomplished technically to protect and defend these systems, an important security issue has thus far been overlooked-the human factor. Information Assurance Risk Management (IARM) was a proposal to standardize the way DON personnel discuss, treat, and implement information assurance. IARM addresses the human security aspect of information and information systems in a regimented way to be understandable through all levels of the DON. To standardize the way DON personnel perceive information assurance, they must be taught what IARM is and how to use it. Can an IARM course be implemented in the DON, and if so at what level and to whom should it be taught?

AbstractQuality phenotype and genotype data are important for the success of a breeding program. Like most programs, African breeding programs generate large multi-disciplinary phenotypic and genotypic datasets from several locations, that must be carefully managed through the use of an appropriate database management system (DBMS) in order to generate reliable and accurate information for breeding-decisions. A DBMS is essential in data collection, storage, retrieval, validation, curation and analysis in plant breeding programs to enhance the ultimate goal of increasing genetic gain. The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), working on the roots, tubers and banana (RTB) crops like cassava, yam, banana and plantain has deployed a FAIR-compliant (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) database; BREEDBASE. The functionalities of this database in data management and analysis have been instrumental in achieving breeding goals. Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for each breeding process have been developed to allow a cognitive walkthrough for users. This has further helped to increase the usage and enhance the acceptability of the system. The wide acceptability gained among breeders in global cassava research programs has resulted in improvements in the precision and quality of genotype and phenotype data, and subsequent improvement in achievement of breeding program goals. Several innovative gender responsive approaches and initiatives have identified users and their preferences which have informed improved customer and product profiles. A remaining bottleneck is the effective linking of data on preferences and social information of crop users with technical breeding data to make this process more effective.

<p>Maintenance management of concrete structures is often complicated because a large amount of information is generated during the service time. The lack of links between information storage and spatial locations increases the difficulty in information retrieval and display. A large number of information technologies provide the possibility of efficient information management during the maintenance management phase, such as building information modeling (BIM) technology providing digital geometric spatial information of concrete structures, geographic information system (GIS) technology providing geospatial information, and databases providing information storage. This paper proposes a visual integration information platform for maintenance management of concrete structures which enables the storing, retrieving and extracting of maintenance information more effectively through linking documents with 3D visual objects.</p>

The following is a case study at a major modular playground equipment producer undergoing the implementation of a new graphical-based configurator for managing its mass customized products. The case study examines the proliferation of software packages to perform configuration and the flow of information in the configuration process. Next, the new configurator is evaluated on its new features to capture, store, and reuse configurations and its visual appeal. In the development of advanced fast reactors, materials and coolant/material interactions pose a critical barrier for higher temperature and longer core life designs. For advanced burner reactors (sodium cooled), experience has shown that the qualified structural materials and fuel cladding severely limits the economic performance. In other liquid metal cooled reactor concepts, advanced materials and better understanding and control of coolant and materials interactions are necessary for realizing the potentials. Researches from universities, national laboratories and related industrial participants have been continuously generating invaluable data and knowledge about materials and their interactions with coolants in the past few decades. Under the consideration of cost and time constraints, the paradigm of designing and implementing a successful Gen IV Nuclear Energy Systems can be shifted and updated via the integration of information and internet technologies. Such efforts can be better visualized by implementing collective (centralized or distributed) data storages to serve the community with organized material data sets. Material property data provided by MatWeb.com and the ongoing development of web-based GEN IV material handbook are few examples. From system design perspective, sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) proposed in the GEN IV system have been significantly developed. According to the GEN IV ten-year program plan, current R&D work will be pointed to demonstration of the design and safety characteristics, and design optimization. All of those activities follow the path of data generation, analysis, knowledge discovery and finally decision making and implementation. We are proposing to create a modularized web-based information system with models to systematically catalog existing data and guide the new development and testing to acquire new data. Technically speaking, information retrieval and knowledge discovery tools will be implemented for researchers with both information lookup options from material database and technology/development gap analysis from intelligent agent and reporting components. The goal of the system is not only to provide another database, but also to create a sharable and expandable platform-free, location-free online system for research institutes and industrial partners.

Abstract:
A significant part of the high pressure gas transport system of Gasunie cannot be examined by in-line inspection techniques. To ensure safe operation of these pipelines, an External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA) module for PIMSLIDER (a pipeline integrity management system) is currently under development. The functional specifications of this module are based on NACE RP0502-2002, a recommended practice for ECDA. In addition to this, a new probabilistic methodology has been adopted, to take account for uncertainties associated with ECDA and to quantify the contributions from aboveground surveys and excavations to the integrity of a pipeline. This methodology, which is based on Structural Reliability Analysis (SRA) and Bayesian updating techniques, is presented in more detail in paper IPC2006-10092 of this conference. The DA module of PIMSLIDER enables computerized storage, retrieval and processing of all appropriate pipeline data and therefore guarantees highly accurate, reproducible and time saving integrity analyses of the Gasunie grid. Another important function of this system is the ability to use the complete database of all pipelines to pre-assess the integrity of a particular pipeline. This automated retrieval of data from pipelines with similar characteristics and/or environmental conditions results in a substantial increase of accessible data and enables Gasunie to improve the reliability of applied statistics throughout the process. As a consequence, the overall cost of inspections and excavations can be greatly reduced. In the Pre-Assessment phase, the DA module assists the integrity manager in gathering and analyzing data necessary to determine the current condition of a pipeline. After collection and visualization of the available data, the user can identify suitable ECDA regions. Furthermore, the gathered data are used to construct prior distributions of parameters relevant to the SRA model, such as the number and size of corrosion defects and pipeline-related parameters. In the Indirect Inspections step, the DA module allows the user to store and analyze the data from aboveground surveys, in order to identify and define the severity of coating faults and areas at which corrosion activity may occur. The probabilistic methodology accounts for the individual performance of each applied survey technique in terms of missed defects and false indications, in general a major source of uncertainty in ECDA. In the Direct Examinations phase, excavations are carried out to collect data to assess possible corrosion activity. Subsequently, the ECDA module uses this information to update, among other things, the parameters concerning the performance of survey techniques, the number of defects and the corrosion rate. As a result, updated failure frequencies are calculated for each ECDA-region (after each excavation if required), which are then used by the DA module to advise the integrity manager if additional mitigating activities are necessary, or by defining a reassessment interval.

Abstract In this work the problem of designing a CAD-system independent product model data base, to be used in computer aided elastomeric seal design, is treated. It is shown how a general purpose turn-key CAD-system can be used together with an external product model data base and external calculation programs. The importance of storing product information in a CAD-system independent data base instead of on drawings in one particular CAD-system is pointed out. This is of special interest from long time storage point of view, as product related information is expected to live longer in a manufacturing company than one particular CAD-system. In order to be able to transmit data between the CAD-system and the external product model data base, and between the data base and the external calculation programs, special interfaces must be designed. Here it is demonstrated how such interface programs can be designed using FORTRAN 77 and a particular graphic application program language available in the CAD-system CDM 300. For the creation of the data base and for the data storage and data retrieval, the data base management system TORNADO is used. Finally the simultaneous use of the CAD-system, the external data base and the calculation program, when designing an elastomeric seal cross section, is demonstrated with a test example.

To reduce financial risk and N losses to the environment, fertilization methods are needed that improve NUE and increase the quality of wheat. In the literature, ample attention is given to grid-based and zone-based soil testing to determine the soil N available early in the growing season. Plus, information is available on in-season N topdressing applications as a means of improving GPC. However, the vast majority of research has focused on wheat that is grown under N limiting conditions in sub-humid regions and irrigated fields. Less attention has been given to wheat in dryland that is water limited. The objectives of this study were to: (1) determine accuracy in determining GPC of HRSW in Israel and SWWW in Oregon using on-combine optical sensors under field conditions; (2) develop a quantitative relationship between image spectral reflectance and effective crop physiological parameters; (3) develop an operational precision N management procedure that combines variable-rate N recommendations at planting as derived from maps of grain yield, GPC, and test weight; and at mid-season as derived from quantitative relationships, remote sensing, and the DSS; and (4) address the economic and technology-transfer aspects of producers’ needs. Results from the research suggest that optical sensing and the DSS can be used for estimating the N status of dryland wheat and deciding whether additional N is needed to improve GPC. Significant findings include: 1. In-line NIR reflectance spectroscopy can be used to rapidly and accurately (SEP <5.0 mg g⁻¹) measure GPC of a grain stream conveyed by an auger. 2. On-combine NIR spectroscopy can be used to accurately estimate (R² < 0.88) grain test weight across fields. 3. Precision N management based on N removal increases GPC, grain yield, and profitability in rainfed wheat. 4. Hyperspectral SI and partial least squares (PLS) models have excellent potential for estimation of biomass, and water and N contents of wheat. 5. A novel heading index can be used to monitor spike emergence of wheat with classification accuracy between 53 and 83%. 6. Index MCARI/MTVI2 promises to improve remote sensing of wheat N status where water- not soil N fertility, is the main driver of plant growth. Important features include: (a) computable from commercial aerospace imagery that include the red edge waveband, (b) sensitive to Chl and resistant to variation in crop biomass, and (c) accommodates variation in soil reflectance. Findings #1 and #2 above enable growers to further implement an efficient, low cost PNM approach using commercially available on-combine optical sensors. Finding #3 suggests that profit opportunities may exist from PNM based on information from on-combine sensing and aerospace remote sensing. Finding #4, with its emphasis on data retrieval and accuracy, enhances the potential usefulness of a DSS as a tool for field crop management. Finding #5 enables land managers to use a DSS to ascertain at mid-season whether a wheat crop should be harvested for grain or forage. Finding #6a expands potential commercial opportunities of MS imagery and thus has special importance to a majority of aerospace imaging firms specializing in the acquisition and utilization of these data. Finding #6b on index MCARI/MVTI2 has great potential to expand use of ground-based sensing and in-season N management to millions of hectares of land in semiarid environments where water- not N, is the main determinant of grain yield. Finding #6c demonstrates that MCARI/MTVI2 may alleviate the requirement of multiple N-rich reference strips to account for soil differences within farm fields. This simplicity will be less demanding of grower resources, promising substantially greater acceptance of sensing technologies for in-season N management.

Post-shipment on-site inspections and international assistance in physical security and stockpile management (PSSM) have different scopes and objectives. On-site inspections allow exporting states to check exported military materiel to ensure that the importer is complying with its commitments, while PSSM assistance aims to improve states’ weapons and ammunition management systems. However, both instruments allow foreign specialists to visit a state’s weapons and ammunition storage facilities and enable information gathering to assess their integrity and identify possible diversion risks. This policy brief highlights that building informal linkages between these instruments, especially with regard to states and actors that conduct inspections and are involved in funding or implementing PSSM assistance, could contribute towards establishing more comprehensive forms of post-shipment cooperation. In addition, applying lessons learned from PSSM assistance in terms of gaining access to states’ facilities, cooperating with the beneficiary importing states, and identifying limitations and opportunities associated with the use of tracking technologies could help to address some of the challenges encountered when conducting on-site inspections. PSSM assistance programmes could also include modules to raise awareness about on-site inspections and be a source of expertise that could assist states when implementing these controls.

Indexing video data is essential for providing content based access. In this paper, we consider how database technology can offer an integrated framework for modeling and querying video data. As many concerns in video (e.g., modeling and querying) are also found in databases, databases provide an interesting angle to attack many of the problems. From a video applications perspective, database systems provide a nice basis for future video systems. More generally, database research will provide solutions to many video issues even if these are partial or fragmented. From a database perspective, video applications provide beautiful challenges. Next generation database systems will need to provide support for multimedia data (e.g., image, video, audio). These data types require new techniques for their management (i.e., storing, modeling, querying, etc.). Hence new solutions are significant. This paper develops a data model and a rule-based query language for video content based indexing and retrieval. The data model is designed around the object and constraint paradigms. A video sequence is split into a set of fragments. Each fragment can be analyzed to extract the information (symbolic descriptions) of interest that can be put into a database. This database can then be searched to find information of interest. Two types of information are considered: (1) the entities (objects) of interest in the domain of a video sequence, (2) video frames which contain these entities. To represent these information, our data model allows facts as well as objects and constraints. We present a declarative, rule-based, constraint query language that can be used to infer relationships about information represented in the model. The language has a clear declarative and operational semantics. This work is a major revision and a consolidation of [12, 13].

Traditional database management systems are inadequate for the handling of such data types. They require new techniques for query formulation, retrieval, evaluation, and navigation. In this paper we develop a knowledge-based framework for modeling and retrieving image data by content. To represent the various aspects of an image object's characteristics, we propose a model which consists of three layers: (1) Feature and Content Layer, intended to contain image visual features such as contours, shapes,etc.; (2) Object Layer, which provides the (conceptual) content dimension of images; and (3) Schema Layer, which contains the structured abstractions of images, i.e., a general schema about the classes of objects represented in the object layer. We propose two abstract languages on the basis of description logics: one for describing knowledge of the object and schema layers, and the other, more expressive, for making queries. Queries can refer to the form dimension (i.e., information of the Feature and Content Layer) or to the content dimension (i.e., information of the Object Layer). These languages employ a variable free notation, and they are well suited for the design, verification and complexity analysis of algorithms. As the amount of information contained in the previous layers may be huge and operations performed at the Feature and Content Layer are time-consuming, resorting to the use of materialized views to process and optimize queries may be extremely useful. For that, we propose a formal framework for testing containment of a query in a view expressed in our query language. The algorithm we propose is sound and complete and relatively efficient.

The authors of the given article continue the series presented by the 2018 paper “Computer Simulation of Neural Networks Using Spreadsheets: The Dawn of the Age of Camelot”. This time, they consider mathematical informatics as the basis of higher engineering education fundamentalization. Mathematical informatics deals with smart simulation, information security, long-term data storage and big data management, artificial intelligence systems, etc. The authors suggest studying basic principles of mathematical informatics by applying cloud-oriented means of various levels including those traditionally considered supplementary – spreadsheets. The article considers ways of building neural network models in cloud-oriented spreadsheets, Google Sheets. The model is based on the problem of classifying multi-dimensional data provided in “The Use of Multiple Measurements in Taxonomic Problems” by R. A. Fisher. Edgar Anderson’s role in collecting and preparing the data in the 1920s-1930s is discussed as well as some peculiarities of data selection. There are presented data on the method of multi-dimensional data presentation in the form of an ideograph developed by Anderson and considered one of the first efficient ways of data visualization.

The selective application of technological and related procedural safeguards is an important responsibility of every Federal organization in providing adequate security to its ADP systems. This publication provides a standard to be used by Federal organizations when these organizations specify that cryptographic protection ia to be used for 11emitive or valuable computer data. Protection of computer data during transmission between electronic components or while in storage may be necessary to maintain the confidentiality and integrity of the Information represented by that data. The standard specifies an encryption algorithm which is to be implemented in an el.ectronJc device for use in Federal ADP systems and networks. The algorithm uniquely defines the mathematical steps required to transform computer data into a cryptographic cipher. It also specifies the steps required to transform the cipher back to its original form. A device performing this algorithm may be used in many applications areas where cryptographic data protection is needed. Within the context of a total security program comprising physical security procedures, good information management practices and computer system/network access controls, the Data Encryption Standard is being made available for use by Federal agencies. This revision supersedes FIPS 46.
