Digital libraries remove physical barriers to accessing information, but the language barrier still remains due to multilingual collections and the linguistic diversity of users. This study aims at understanding the effect of users’ language skills and field of knowledge on their language preferences when searching for information online and to provide new insights on the access to multilingual digital libraries. Both quantitative and qualitative data were gathered using a questionnaire and results show that the language skills and the field of knowledge have an impact on the language choice for searching online. These factors also determine the interest in cross-language information retrieval: language-related fields constitute the best potential group of users, followed by the Arts and Humanities and the Social Sciences.

This study aimed to compare research trends regarding SEIS principles and FAIR data principles, in support of EOSC. Articles published in specific environmental policy areas, placed in the context of EU-Neighborhood South/East Regions Dialogue, were analyzed using content analysis. The evolution of EU interoperability was numerically classified in support of SEIS initiatives, compliant with FAIR principles, and able to benefit from the building of an EOSC community. The first proposed result refers to the extent of comparability of SEIS information storage and retrieval systems principles and FAIR data principles with respect to the implementation of the INSPIRE directive in Europe. This social comparison process occurred in two dimensions, trust concerning the resource FAIR and institutional loyalty according to SEIS. The relationships between SEIS and EOSC were estimated in its evolution according to five actions (cost, time, trust, best practices, cloud), and by exposing SEIS-friendly research infrastructures whose thematic data services points to the EOSC catalogue of services.

This chapter examines the shift from the industrial age to the current “information age” by looking closely at the history of the electronic information industry since the 1970s, with special focus on key individuals and companies. Early pioneers developed remotely accessible database search systems and marketed them commercially. The advent of high-capacity storage media and personal computers in the 1980s made it possible for individual consumers to use databases, and in the 1990s, networking capabilities further supported the emergence of the Internet. Web portals developed, and a handful of companies successfully commoditized Web content. The 2000s were dominated by a move from general search engines to value-added “apps,” as well as by social networking, multimedia technology, and mobile consumer electronics. Abstract How we respond emotionally to the peaks and valleys of life reveals much about who we are now, who we have been, and has implications for who we could be in the future. The question of how we remember these emotional events is thus of central importance to understanding human experience, and is the subject of this chapter. In addressing this question, our goals are to understand the specific neurocognitive mechanisms that preserve records of significant experiences, the motivational and contextual factors that influence their operation, and what their interaction tells us about the relationship between memory and emotion more generally. We begin with a brief historical sketch of previous approaches to emotion and memory and then move to our own multileveled social cognitive neuroscience approach. We then apply this approach to understanding how the emotional nature of an event influences the encoding, storage, and retrieval of information about it. We conclude with suggestions for ways in which a social cognitive neuroscience approach can guide future research. Most investigations of emotion and memory have begun with the same question: How do we remember emotionally evocative events? But investigators have framed this question differently and, as a result, have reached different conclusions. Three approaches have dominated past research, and the strengths and weaknesses of each are rooted in the ways in which their questions have been posed. Debate over whether emotional memories, and especially traumatic ones, are remembered poorly or well has a long history and is central to current discussion about the recovery of supposedly repressed memories of sexual and physical abuse during childhood (for discussion, see Conway, 1997; Loftus &amp; Ketcham, 1994; Schacter, 1996). The question of whether emotion improves or impairs memory often is framed in terms of the question of whether emotional memories are indelible or reconstructed. Debate concerning this issue has played out in three different arenas.

The study examined the impact of social media on information retrieval among undergraduate students in the Faculty of Management Sciences, University of Ilorin. It determined the social media network that undergraduate students were more exposed to for retrieving information, identified the differences in their usage of social media network for information retrieval based on gender and age brackets, explored preferences for social media compared to other sources of information retrieval systems available for students, explored the types of information retrieved from social media network, and identified the challenges they faced in the use of social media networks. The population of the study comprised of 3,634 students out of which a sample of 360 was chosen through stratified random technique. A self-designed questionnaire was used to collect data. Five research questions were developed and answered by the study. The findings revealed that undergraduate students exposure to social media was very high. The social media tools where students exposure was highest was WhatsApp application compared to any other social media platform. Students preferred using social media platforms to retrieve information than using conventional resources like textbooks, journals, etc. There was a negligible difference between social media exposure level of male gender and female gender. Furthermore, the study revealed that undergraduate students level of exposure varied by age brackets while those within age bracket 21-25 years have the highest level of exposure. The study also demonstrated that a higher percentage of students like using social media platforms to retrieve information on the latest update of school activities and to gratify their needs in entertainment. The major challenge faced by students is the high cost of access to social media platforms (subscription). The study recommended that the students exposure to and bias preference for social media over other available information retrieval systems should be controlled.

Various web mining techniques are applied to retrieve useful information as well as improvement of existing techniques of mining to search and retrieve useful information from the web. With the growth in the number of devices producing various forms of information, the amount of information is increasing exponentially. Also, these huge amount of information are being shared in the world through various means. Hence, it has become necessary to organize information in such a manner so that access to them is easy and feasible. As the amount of information is increasing rapidly, efficient indexing of information for easy access is becoming quite challenging. Hence, there is a need to search for solutions to solve this problem. The field of information retrieval attempts to solve this problem. Information retrieval is concerned with storage, organization, indexing, and retrieval of information. Information retrieval techniques incorporate several aspects of information to achieve the target of efficient indexing. Since there are several forms of information, their characteristics vary a lot from each other. Image is one such popular form of information which is shared the most among the people around the world. Also, with the presence of numerous image capturing devices, acquisition of image is no longer a difficult task. People enjoy capturing and sharing images through social network. Although image is a complex structure, it is easily understood by people across the world. Also, it has become a popular means of information sharing among people. This chapter discusses information retrieval techniques for image data. Visual Information Retrieval or Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) accepts query in the form of image or image features instead of text. It is concerned with searching and retrieval of images similar to the query given in the form of images. Most of the visual information retrieval techniques are based on processing single resolution of an image. But processing of single resolution of image is not sufficient for efficient retrieval as image is a complex structure and contains varying level of details. Hence, there is a need of multiresolution processing of images. Today, it is very difficult to keep track of number of research papers based on multiresolution analysis as it is widely used for various image-based applications. Also, there are a number of multiresolution techniques available to achieve this. Multiresolution processing has one big advantage that features that are left undetected at one level get detected at another level which is not the case with single resolution analysis. We demonstrate this fact with the help of an experiment using Discrete Wavelet Transform along with the discussion of various multiresolution techniques for visual information retrieval. The experiment helps in explaining the important properties of multiresolution analysis and also provides future scope of research in this field.
