Peters, Jason Christian. "Web information systems : a study of maintenance, change and flexibility." Thesis, Brunel University, 2010. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5460.

Full text
Abstract:
Information Systems (IS’s) have provided organisations with huge efficiency gains and benefits over the years; however an outstanding problem that is yet to be successfully tackled is that of the troublesome maintenance phase. Consuming vast resources and thwarting business progression in a competitive global market place, system maintenance has been recognised as one of the key areas where IS is failing organisations. Organisations are too often faced with the dilemma of either replacement or the continual upkeep of an unwieldy system. The ability for IS’s to be able to adapt to exogenous influences is even more acute today than at any time in the past. This is due to IS’s namely, Web Information Systems (WIS’s) increasingly and continually having to accommodate the needs of organisations to interconnect with a plethora of additional systems as well as supporting evolving business models. The richness of the interconnectivity, functionalities and services WIS’s now offer are shaping social, cultural and economic behaviour on a truly global scale, making the maintenance of such systems and evermore pertinent issue. The growth and proliferation of WIS’s shows no sign of abating which leads to the conclusion that what some have termed as the ‘maintenance iceberg’ should not be ignored. The quandary that commercial organisations face is typically driven by two key aspects; firstly, systems are built on the cultural premise of using fixed requirements, with not enough thought or attention being paid to systems abilities to deviate from these requirements. Secondly, systems do not generally cope well with adapting to unpredictable change arising from outside of the organisations environment. Over the recent past, different paradigms, approaches and methods have attempted to make software development more predictable, controllable and adaptable, however, the benefits of such measures in relation to the maintenance dilemma have been limited. The concept of flexible systems that are able to cope with such change in an efficient manner is currently an objective that few can claim to have realised successfully. The primary focus of the thesis was to examine WIS post-development change in order to empirically substantiate and understand the nature of the maintenance phase. This was done with the intention to determine exactly ‘where’ and ‘how’ flexibility could be targeted to address these changes. This study uses an emergent analytical approach to identify and catalogue the nature of change occurring within WIS maintenance. However, the research framework design underwent a significant revision as the initial results indicated that a greater emphasis and refocus was required to achieve the research objective. To study WIS’s in an appropriate and detailed context, a single case study was conducted in a web development software house. In total the case study approach was used to collect empirical evidence from four projects that investigated post-development change requests in order to identify areas of the system susceptible to change. The maintenance phases of three WIS projects were considered in-depth, resulting in the collection of over four hundred change requests. The fourth project served as a validation case. The results are presented and the findings are used to identify key trends and characteristics that depict WIS maintenance change. The analytical information derived from the change requests is consolidated and shown diagrammatically for the key areas of change using profile models developed in this thesis. Based on the results, the thesis concludes and contributes to the ongoing debate that there is a discernable difference when considering WIS maintenance change compared to that of traditional IS maintenance. The detailed characteristics displayed in the profile models are then used to map specific flexibility criteria that ultimately are required to facilitate change. This is achieved using the Flexibility Matrix of Change (FMoC) tool which was developed within the remit of this research. This tool is a qualitative measurement scheme that aligns WIS maintenance changes to a reciprocal flexibility attribute. Thus, the wider aim of this thesis is to also expand the awareness of flexibility and its importance as a key component of the WIS lifecycle.

Hamnebo, Karl, and Oscar Askfelt. "Information flows in Demand Responsive Public Transport : Interactivity, information, and flexibility in a modern ridesharing service."

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is to study what and how information flows can be used to improve Demand responsive transport (DRT) systems by understanding potential users and how they could be willing to participate in DRT to a higher degree. The viewpoint of this thesis tends to lean towards a DRT service of a public transport type. This thesis studies users in relation to what interaction and information they perceive to be needed in dealing with a DRT service and the different pros and cons with various approaches. The study gathers information by performing adapted qualitative interviews with a select number of users between the ages of 20-35. The participants give their views on three DRT scenarios and reflect on DRT in general as a concept presented to them through a tangible mocked-up interactive prototype.  The thesis makes several distinct findings. The importance of pricing a DRT service correctly is vital to the users, as several participants in the study relied on pricing for decision-making. It also finds that the usage of zones as nomenclature is confusing to many users. The services must be dependable and punctual to both attract users, keep users, and build trust among the general populace. This study shows that DRT services could be a difficult concept to introduce to users. DRT could be introduced as a complement or as an alternative to conventional public transport. An important factor is a well-designed flow of information in the application to keep the user engaged and involved. It is shown that the usability of the application is a cornerstone for a theoretical DRT service to excel. Context is important where DRT and ridesharing would have a higher success rate. Nighttime in urban areas could be a niche market, due to the irregularity, delay, or interruption of regular public transport services at these hours.

Ni, Yong. "The impact of information systems on business flexibility from the managerial perspective : multiple cases of enterprise systems enhancement and ongoing changes." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2007. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/2396/.

Full text
Abstract:
Today, flexibility is widely concemed as the key capability an organisation should possess due to the fast change of business and technology environment (Haeckel 1999; Golden and Powell 2000). Business is fundamentally concerned with and driven by changes. It requires flexibility to quickly respond to new conditions, to absorb sudden shocks and to accommodate diversity and heterogeneity. All of these demands, in turn, feed through to the computer-systems that modem organisations rely upon (CBDi Forum 2001). The attainment of information system flexibility is becoming an essential requirement for the business (Golden and Powell 2000; Behrsin et al 1994). Despite ITAS has been developed to achieve great flexibility and functionality in order to provide more agile and more effective solution for the businesses, it is also Widely subject to criticism for its inflexibility and rigidity (Allen and Boynton 1991; Avison et al 1995; Davenport 2000). This research addresses the IS flexibility issue and studies "how organisations adapt their ISs/ESs to accommodate ongoing business changes" A model of tactical ES adaptation for ongoing business changes has been developed from three organisations' ES post-implementation experience. This model depicts a complicated decision making process for ES adaptation to support ongoing business changes and attain flexibility. It demonstrates the dynamic relationship among emerging business needs, adaptation tactics, adaptation activities, performance and resource measurement, and risk evaluation.

Abstract:
Researchers have found that a positive correlation exists between information technology (IT) flexibility, IT effectiveness, and strategic alignment in organizations. It has been determined that within inflexible IT environments maintainability is reduced and key business factors become at risk. An IT flexibility measurement matrix was developed to assess IT flexibility however leadership characteristics were not identified for measurement with that model. Determining the leadership characteristics needed for IT flexibility was the purpose of this multiple case study. Leveraging the empowerment, situational leadership, IT-business equilibrium, and complexity change theories, the research questions were focused on the leadership characteristics exhibited by organizational and project team leadership. A purposeful sample of 20 IT nonmanagers participated in in-depth interviews and provided insights into leadership characteristics that were observed and practiced in flexible IT environments. Using deductive a priori coding and inductive data analysis, communication was identified as the leadership characteristic required by both organizational and team leadership. Other emergent leadership characteristics were having a vision, managing change, and servant leadership. The implications for positive social change are for organizations to use the results to develop leaders and teams to successfully manage flexible IT environments, enabling improved IT-business alignment. Academic institutions can provide structured training and cooperative education programs, partnering with IT organizations to develop and retain top IT talent. In addition, individuals can build knowledge and gain experience in these areas to strengthen personal and professional skills, thus increasing career potential.

Alatawi, Mohammed Naif. "Examining the Impact of Learning Management Systems in Computer Programming Courses." Diss., NSUWorks, 2019. https://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/1084.

Full text
Abstract:
The development of software and communication technologies in education has led the majority of universities worldwide to integrate the functions of Learning Management Systems (LMSs) into their learning environments. LMSs offers several features that encourage their use by universities and other educational institutions, such as unlimited access to course content, easy tracking of learners’ progress and performance, and reduced costs in terms of both money and time. Most existing LMS studies have been focused on experienced LMS users who are familiar with its functions, with little consideration given to new users. Furthermore, although previous researchers have identified various means of enhancing the effectiveness of LMS use, no consensus has yet been reached on which of these features most successfully improve the learning outcomes of new learners enrolled in programming courses. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to examine the usability of particular LMS features and their impact on learning outcomes for freshman students enrolled in programming courses. Through the Virtual Programming Lab (VPL) and discussion forums, particular LMS features have been considered. For this study, a quantitative quasi-experimental design was employed, including experimental and control groups of new students enrolled in an introductory programming course that involved different LMS features. These features have been considered in the place of treatment in this experiment, in which the level of difference between participants in the two groups was compared. This study involved two main dependent variables: LMS features’ usability and learning achievement. For the first dependent variable, LMS usability, the participants completed a survey, based on the components of Shackel’s usability model (1991), to evaluate the effectiveness of the LMS features’ usability. Four constructs underpin this model: effectiveness, learnability, flexibility, a¬¬nd attitude. For the second dependent variable, learning achievement, the final grade was used to measure the impact of these two LMS features on learning achievement between the two groups. The results revealed significance differences related to LMS features’ usability and learning achievement between the experimental group and the control group. Participants in the experimental group reported greater LMS usability than did those in the control group, and overall course scores indicated improved learning performance in members of the experimental group who applied the VPL and discussion forms features of programming courses.

Abstract:
<p>IMIS (Integrated Mobile Information System for Diabetic Healthcare) aims at providing healthcare on both stationary and mobile platform, which is based on Engström’s triangle model in Activity Theory. It focuses on the need for communication and information accessibility between care-providers and their shared patients. Based on the identified need in the target area, IMIS has decided to construct a network-based communication system to support communication and accessibility to patients’ journal. Since the system integrates various roles from the heath care organization, it is a challenge to provide a useful software program to the group members. In order to facilitate the application and enhance the Human-Computer interaction of the system, agent technology is applied to increase the flexibility factor so that the system could be self-adapted to a wider range group of users.</p><p>Besides, this thesis also introduces the approach of using social-psychology — Activity theory in HCI, and discuss the integration of these different disciplines. The Multi-agents System is applied with Gaia methodology from micro perspectives. From the macro perspective Activity theory constructs the coordination mechanism of the different agents. A prototype is applied based on the different model of our research.</p>

Abstract:
In the region of Uppland, a shortage of electric power during cold days has emerged during the past years by virtue of the electrification of the society and industry in general. As a result, a power flexibility market managed by the CoordiNet project has commenced to hopefully create a more reliant, eco-friendly and accessible electricity supply. Uppsala kommun wishes to participate in the market but needs a solution for communication between market and technology and smart control methods. In this project, the solution to the problem, consisting of a mobile app, API, database, server and deep learning model, almost meets the requirements to participate on the market this autumn. With more time and resources, the product can hopefully be completed, enabling both economic and city growth in the region.

Abstract:
Problem: Today's knowledge society needs companies, personnel and employees to constantly work with both competence and knowledge development. E-learning is a learning method that can be used in businesses in order to develop and change the work process. E-learning has been shown to lead to cost efficiency, delivery efficiency, free study pace, personal responsibility and savings in the education process. As more and more companies use e-learning, it is essential to investigate the effects of e-learning on the business and its competence development. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects that e-learning has in a business and on staff who invest and use e-learning platforms as a pedagogical training method. The study will also examine the expectations and goals that companies set in connection with the investment in their e-learning. The study will further describe the effects achieved and the non-achieved effects that have arisen in connection with e-learning compared to previous educational methods. Method: This dissertation is based on a qualitative case study where semi-structured interviews are conducted with about ten workers from Postnord who have in some way been a part of constructing their application “Postnord Learning” and its use. These interviews should contribute a subjective perspective to the study. The qualitative method is applied in order to give the participants the opportunity to answer the questions without restrictions. The study is based on an inductive approach with the purpose of applying the interviews as the primary focus and the search for other theories as a secondary focus in connection with data presented in previous studies. Conclusion: The effects that e-learning brings to a business are cost and time efficiency, improved competence development and the ability to monitor the levels of commitment to e-learning platforms. The negative effects arising from e-learning are technical barriers, which means that the necessary units must be adjusted for e-learning to function and add operational value. Other effects are decoupling from the platform, lack of motivation for skills development and limited social interactions.<br>Problem: Dagens kunskapssamhälle kräver att företag, personal och anställda ständigt arbetar med både kompetens och kunskapsutveckling.

<p>The overall aim of the study is to get a better understanding for the relation between different forms of representation in ICT-interfaces and cognitive variation in individuals. Cognitive style is, according to Riding & Al-Hajji (2000) ”an individual’s preferred and habitual approach to both organizing and representing information”. Research of the relation between cognitive style and learning performance has shown, according to Riding & Al-Hajji (2000), that pupils learn best when the structure, the content and the mode of presentation of the material suits their style.</p><p>On the basis of an explorative pre-analysis of a multimedia program for learning mathematics, named Matador, a general hypothesis was formulated. The general hypothesis that was examined is: The Matador multimedia program can be improved as concerns the presentational formats both for pupils who are helped by and attracted by visual information and – in particular – for pupils who are helped by and attracted by verbal information. A minor user’s test with 10-15 year old pupils was carried out in order to complement the pre-analysis by testing some specific details of the program with users. The results of the study indicate that there are certain aspects that could be improved, especially for those who are helped by and attracted by verbal information.</p>

É ainda realizado um pequeno enquadramento de Portugal face às questões abordadas anteriormente e pcrspectiva-se a sua possível evolução na Sociedade da Informação.<br>Concepts such as real time and the global village are directly linked to the introduction and spread of technology in the Information Society. Increasing mutations between technologies and the sharing of information are introducing ncw variables into society. This is very much the case in the market for employment. New questions about work arise, however, as these new instruments are introduced into companies: Up to what point to these technologies improve or adversely affect the creation of new jobs? Will employees be able to adapt to new work-forms and the increasing demand for higher qualiílcations? Or will the worker who is unable to keep up be marginalised? Another question concems the analysis of the catalytic effect these technologies have in poorer countries. Will these technologies finally spell the end of the gap between developed and third world societics or will the effect be quite the reverse? This thesis sets out to address these questions by analysing three vectors that have formed the platform for successful companies in the Information Society: the introduction of new technologies, the organisation of production and work methods; and the importance given to training and qualifications of human resources. In addition, the Portuguese situation is set against these questions and the countryN future place in the Information Society is analysed.<br>info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Abstract:
Process standardization is a topic that has generated a lot of research and literature. At first, the focus was on production; today processes are used in all different kind of business areas. The aim of this study has been to analyze how processes can be applied on development businesses and how IT systems affect the result of the process. To accomplish this, we have asked questions such as what standardization is in a development process? Why are the processes standardized? What difficulties can appear with standardization? And how the IT-systems affect the result of the process? To answer these questions, we have preformed a case study on Saab. Saab is a well know Swedish company who are working with a project called the GMS-project, where they develop processes to cover the whole company´s business areas. The literature gives the reader an understanding of processes and standardization. Further on it gives a perspective on how IT and processes should be integrated as well as a perspective on quality in processes. The result of this study shows that Saab focus on standardization of milestones, concepts and language, when designing processes for development. Through this, they want to accomplish better collaboration. The study also shows the difficulties in development processes compared with production. The main differences are that development processes needs to have built in flexibility and room for the employees to take initiatives. This makes it hard to standardize mode of operation, in a development process. For IT to be a support for the development process, it requires an adaptation of both the process and IT systems. On Saab there are different opinions on how the adaption should be organized. This study points out some specific reasons that it is hard to predict it the system or the process should be adapted. Instead, common sense should be used while adapting IT and process.

Overmaat, Eduard. "Balancing Contributions in the Nordic Electricity System : Who bears the brunt of electricity production and consumption patterns?" Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Elektricitetslära, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-393570.

Abstract:
The share of intermittent weather-based renewable electricity sources has risen and will keep on rising in the Nordic electricity system, which will increase the need of balancing power in the Nordics. The previously developed concept of balancing contributions is used to look at the historic contribution of different power sources to the balancing on the grid. Three different time scales are taken into account: Daily variations, (bi-)weekly variations, and seasonal/yearly variations. This will aid in the understanding of the synergy of different sources on the grid, which, together with a deeper knowledge of the electricity market, might make it possible in the future to quantify the potential for balancing of sources within the Nordic grid. As a method to analyse the balancing contributions, a previously set-up online visualisation tool was used as an example, and this existing tool was revamped with a new software back-end using a database and automatic data collection. This allows one to be able to use a larger dataset, and for more functionality in the future, such as real-time updates and easier implementation of additional visualisations. Production and consumption data was gathered from Entso-e and SvK: the former has issues with data quality and the latter publishes data with a three-week delay which can only be obtained manually. The results from the previous research have been replicated, and a bigger dataset has been used to do the calculations, encompassing the years 2015-2018. The overall results show great similarity to that of the previous work. For the first time it was possible to plot the intrayear balancing contributions as a time series, which showed especially that the contributions of hydro power and electricity trade have changed over the period 2015-2018. There is a difference in hydro power balancing contributions based on geographical location, where Finnish hydro power is mainly a daily and—to a lesser extent—weekly regulator, Swedish hydro and especially Norwegian hydro have larger contributions on a yearly basis as well. There are even differences within countries, as the balancing contribution of hydro in bidding area SE2 has changed much more over time than hydro in SE1, for example. Other examples of interesting situations on the grid have also been highlighted using the online visualisation tool.

Abstract:
Service companies in the temporary work and recruitment industry are expanding and creating the conditions for good growth. In line with the rapidly changing environment, demands are made for internal change and adaptation to the new. Leading roles must communicate in a way that reaches the entire organization in order for all employees to have a common goal image to ensure that they work in the same direction. The purpose of this study was to understand how growth in a temporary work and recruitment agency changes the information structure and places new demands on communication of goals and strategies and also explain the effects this could have on the company. For the study's analysis, the contingency theory was applied, which describes organizations as open systems that have to balance the internal needs in order to be able to adapt to the environment as it changes.A qualitative study was applied to gain a deeper understanding for the communication of goals and strategies in a growth company. Semi-structured interviews with six employees at the case company form the basis for the study's collected empirics. The results of the study showed that with the prevailing growth, demands are changing for the internal communication where the balance between stability and flexibility must be adapted to its context and increased complexity. Economically set goals have no increased motivation among the organisation's employees but promote flexibility and innovation.Service companies that has a strong dependence on its enviroment must adapt its internal communication to changing conditions in order to create security while at the same time promoting flexibility to achieve set goals. A common understanding at the operational and strategic level that relates to the changing world and the internal development of the business where communication becomes crucial to explain how, when and why the organization acts as they do.The conclusions of the study shows that the balance between the organization's structure and its flexibility is dependent on the context and in line with the internal growth, the information structure that will relate to the changing demands of the world changes. Clear goals and strategies can limit the company if there is no room for flexibility. Lack of goals and strategies can lead to reduced motivation and uncertainty at the operational level, but from a strategic perspective freedom is given to the employees but also high expectations. Internal communication and dissemination of information play a central role in creating room for flexibility and innovation, but at the same time it creates a sense of security in the organization.

Abstract:
The focus of this research is to study the characteristics of flexibility in order to help building more flexible IS. The objective is to achieve flexibility in the IS in order to adapt them swiftly for facing changes, and be able to adjust for new strategies. The main questioned posed is: How can IS flexibility be achieved?. This constitutes the research question. This research extends previous studies related to flexibility by focusing on the various dimensions of Information Systems. To cover all the aspects of an IS the problem of enabling an IS with flexibility will be approached, in this research, by analyzing the relevant elements in an Information System. This research will try to identify what IS flexibility is in the people, process, IT, and data dimensions; and how IS flexibility can be achieved. The conclusion that can be drawn is that the flexibility enablers needed for an Information System are contingent upon its unique characteristics. The findings of both case studies show that the elements that sustain flexibility are not the same for every IS; they depend on certain characteristics of the specific IS. The fact that the elements or enablers needed to sustain flexibility are different can be explained by the polymorphic property of flexibility: for an IS, flexibility displays the same polymorphism characteristic found in strategic flexibility. The answer to the research question of how IS flexibility can be achieved, lies in the flexibility enablers needed for a specific IS. From a practical point of view this means that the managers involved in flexibility decisions or initiatives should understand that there are flexibility enablers in the resources of a firm that can be deployed or acquire. Then, they should become familiar and understand them. But in order to really enable a particular IS with the correct set of flexibility enablers (or the correct form of flexibility needed) it is very important that these enablers be selected according to the unique characteristics of the IS in hand. The conceptual IS flexibility framework developed in this research and the findings presented as a result of two case studies (of two different flexible Information systems tightly linked to changing strategies) conducted, constitutes a valuable guide for managers to deploy flexible IS to rapidly adapt them when faced to changes needed for strategies implementation in a continuous manner

Over the past two decades, management research has demonstrated a growing interest in the subject of uncertainty and in the means employed by organizations to cope with it. There is a consensus among researchers nowadays that organizations must be constantly changing and adapting their operations and strategies to match new market and economic requirements. The ability of a firm to rapidly change its goals and strategies and to readily reconfigure its operations is called “strategic flexibility”. Such ability is being identified as a critical success factor for contemporary organizations. Nevertheless, information technology support for strategic flexibility has been limited. In most organizations, there is still a large gap that separates strategic planning activities from information systems development activities. This reduces the agility of the company to respond to new market necessities. A study of the management literature demonstrates that current requirements of managers in uncertain and changing environments have not been fulfilled by the management support systems available today. In this thesis, we propose a mechanism to make information systems “strategy-aware”. Such strategy awareness is defined as a feature that allows for the rapid update of a system’s functions in response to strategic changes. This feature also improves an organization’s capacity for strategic alignment and performance monitoring. More specifically, we propose a software architecture that makes information system’s users become aware of the company’s strategic necessities while performing their job. Our focus in this work is on business process management and the concept developed by us is called Strategy-Aware Business Process Management (SA-BPM). The strategy awareness is achieved through a modular adaptation infrastructure that changes the behavior of the business process management system at run-time. The system becomes able to capture information derived directly from the organization’s management support systems (e.g., its strategic planning systems). Through our framework, organizations can develop the capacity to make frequent changes to their strategies and to rapidly make these changes operational, contributing to the improvement of their strategic flexibility.

Abstract:
The report's study will treat the subject of internal communication in an organization at the forefront of technology. In today's organizations, communication and information management are A and O. Because the individual has different knowledge and experiences, they will also interpret and apply information differently. Therefore, employee application and understanding is an important factor in ensuring that the right information is handled through appropriate communication channels and tools for getting the right information to the right person and at the right time. The study has been carried out at the company OBOS Sverige AB in the Sales Support department. A qualitative study has been applied to a department where the purpose is to investigate how different metaphorical perspectives can be used to analyze empiric. The study is limited to analyzing the employees' own interpretation and application. Gareth Morgan's machine metaphor and organometrics have been used to describe and analyze employee flexibility and adaptation to new communication tools to analyze the work structure and routine work in the sales support department. The analysis is aimed at information management and the individual's choice of communication tools. The qualitative survey showed that the application of oral communication face to face was the primary communication channel used to ensure that the message was received and interpreted according to the sender's purpose. E-mail was used to preserve the information documented for future events. There was a risk that the recipient misinterprets the message as the information can be interpreted differently between individuals. This is based on the information and communication shortcomings that existed within the department's work structure and routine work. The application of the metaphors describes in a fundamental way how and why individuals work as they do.

Marr, Shuna A. "Work process knowledge in Scottish visitor attractions." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/254.

Abstract:
Work process knowledge (WPK) is a concept for systems-level knowledge of the workplace and has been shown to be most important in organisations requiring multi-functional working. Most of the previous body of knowledge on WPK has focussed mainly on manufacturing industries; there has been less investigation of WPK in the service sector and none in the visitor attraction (VA) industry, an important employer in Scotland. The VA industry is extremely dynamic and many businesses are rapidly moving towards multi-functional team working, driven by an urgent need to develop quality, customer-focussed strategies to survive in an over-supplied and very competitive market. This study identifies the nature of WPK in Scottish VAs, what relationship WPK has to customer service, how WPK in this service sector differs from selected published studies in manufacturing and other service sector contexts and what factors affect the development of WPK in VAs. Following recruitment of a number of VAs using an online questionnaire and subsequent site visits, six sites were selected for case study, on the basis that they demonstrated most evidence of multi-functional working and staff with developed WPK. The research design was comparative case studies of the work processes and knowledge within these six VAs, based on a social constructivist framework, using the methods of key informant interviews and shadowing. Although these six sites represent a cross-spread of attractions in terms of types, location and size, they nonetheless show strong similarities in their basic business structure. The data show that WPK is an essential element of workers’ roles and a vital requirement in providing good customer service. Although VA managers do not use the term ‘work process knowledge’, they nonetheless recognise the importance of having staff with a wider view of their business and are actively encouraging its rapid development. Multi-functionality and job rotation are main ways of developing WPK but sites also use key workers with job roles that help develop high levels of WPK, who are then used as a staff resource. The main factor contributing to the development of WPK is communication, especially of systems-level information. Cultural information-sharing is an essential pre-condition for the development of WPK in this context. Other determining factors are flexibility, employee biographies, seasonality issues, how weddings and functions are handled on-site and the size and complexity of the site. WPK is the foundation on which good customer service is based and elements of it deliver customer service. It is the closely integrated nature of the employee-customer relationship that has such a profound effect on WPK development in this service sector industry and is essentially what differentiates it from previously published studies. The identification of the customer as a hitherto unrecognised key driver of WPK is the most important contribution to knowledge made by this work.

Abstract:

This research found that Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) or spatial mapping provides the potential for significantly improving asset management flexibility. Space relates everything to everything else so spatial relationships can replace technically constructed relationships found in typical databases. This means that the effort associated with database re-design in the face of change is significantly reduced, or removed.

Abstract:
This paper addresses the tension between benefits of centralized data control against the benefits of decentralized control at the level of the business unit. Centralized data control provides the benefit of uniform standards whereas business unit data control grants flexibility to react to rapidly changing environments. Many data standardization efforts fail because they do not fully take into account the value of flexibility and ownership incentives. We use a real options based framework and the theory of incomplete contracts to derive propositions about the optimal level of data standardization across the enterprise. Applications of the propositions are illustrated with case vignettes. The paper makes two main contributions. First, the approach defines formally how incentive structures influence ownership of the option value or value of flexibility, which is an intangible information asset. Second the derived propositions would help senior management to more precisely consider aligning incentives in data standardization exercises.

The energy sector has faced a growing increase in demand over the past few years, resulting from the introduction of new technologies, as well as from economic development worldwide. Similarly, energy production based on renewable sources is increasingly used to minimize fossil fuel dependency and the associated emissions. These factors have resulted in structural changes, both in topology and operation of the electrical system, leading to the appearance of distributed energy resources (DERs) technologies. On the production side, distributed generation (DG) units, that are energy sources closer to the site of the load, have become increasingly common, while on the demand side, new technological applications, such as electric vehicles with their bidirectional flow capability (Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology) have changed the typical customer role. Such changes have become particularly important at the distribution network level. In this context, the concept of a Technical Virtual Power Plant (TVPP) emerges, whose fundamental operating principle consists of the aggregation of small producers and power sources into a virtual power generation network. This concept aims to enhance the flexibility of the grid, while contributing to an increase in the quality and reliability of electric energy, which also brings economic benefits. In this thesis, a stochastic mixed-integer linear programming (MLIP) optimization model was developed. The main objective was providing flexibility to the distribution system through the concept a TVPP who is responsible for aggregating, DG units and electrical vehicles (EVs) capable of supplying energy to the grid at some of the nodes of the TVPP. The model is tested using the IEEE 119 Bus test system, and results show that with the inclusion of DG units and V2G, the profit of a TVPP increases by 45.4%.

Nevertheless, few studies focus on the flexibility of Information System Development teams. The purpose of this study is to explore the flexibility of ISD teams. Based on the socio-technical perspective, three primary factors are identified: (a) the change of business requirement, (b) the change of technical development, and (c) the change of the process of software development. Through the application of Delphi Research, the opinions of a panel of experts were collected as the primary data of this study. Our result indicates that the construct of ISDP team flexibility is presented as a multidimensional construct consisting of three constituents: flexibility responding the changes in (a) business requirements, (b) system development techniques, and (c) systems development processes. These sub-constructs are labeled as business requirements flexibility, system development techniques flexibility, and systems development processes flexibility.

碩士<br>淡江大學<br>資訊管理學系碩士班<br>102<br>Information Technology has a huge growing in recent years. For developing an information system need to achieve a series development process. But to build a success IS not only need technology but a organizational factor must considered. IS developing often face to challenges, made the project difficult to carry out values with the original plan. So that development team needs to change but also caused extra troubles. And when the system is delivered, there is also need to adapt necessary change because of the outside environment, and it is often costly. This study survey a large-scale information systems development of public sector, we took a team interviews in core member of development team. The interview transcript, verbatim typed in through the establishment of plain text. Text analysis (Textual Analysis) conduct through those text. In this study, the results of the first phase of open coding, summed up two types of open coding, task and technology. Through the 13 open codings, we can identify system flexibilities from the system development process. Both exist and lack flexibilities. Based on the results of data analysis, the overall system development purports to maintain flexibility, you must first ensure that the task flexibilities exist, which most critical is the need to clearly define all the work. Reducing errors in project is the important linkage to technology categories flexibilities. On the other hand, overall lack of flexibility reasons for the project is no clear definition of work requirements, which will directly lead to a lack of flexibility both task and technology. We proposed an flexibilities coding for identify information systems programs. Also evaluation in an empirical large-scale information system development. We also conclude recommendations to getting more flexibilities for this case.

Abstract:
With Dennard Scaling phasing out in the mid-2000s, architectural scaling and hardware specialization take centre stage to provide performance bene fits with already stalling Moore's law. An outcome from this hardware specialization is GPU which exploits the Data Level Parallelism in an application. One approach is to augment the existing infrastructure with accelerators like GPUs that cater to data-parallel, throughput centric workloads ranging from AI, HPC to Visualization. Further, the availability of GPUs in Public Cloud offerings has expedited their mass adoption. At the same time these modern cloud-based applications are placing increasing demands on infrastructure in-terms of versatility, performance and e ciency. The high acquisition and operational cost of GPUs necessitate their optimal utilization while avoiding common pitfalls like resource stranding. Disaggregating expensive and power hungry GPUs will enable a cost-e cient and adaptive ecosystem for their deployments. In this work, we rst quantify the gains associated with disaggregated GPU deployments using metrics like failed VM requests and GPU Watt Hours consumption. For this, we use QUADD-SIM, a simulator we built to model, quantify, and contrast di erent facets of these emerging GPU deployments. Using QUADD-SIM we model different VM and resource provisioning aspects of disaggregated GPU deployments. We simulate realistic AI workload requests for a period of 3 months with characteristics derived from recent public datacenter traces. Our results attest that disaggregated GPU deployment strategies outperform traditional GPU deployments in terms of failed VM requests and GPU Watt-hours consumption. We showed through extensive experimentation that 5.14% and 7.90% additional failed VM requests were serviced by disaggregated GPU deployments consuming 10.92% and 3.30% lesser GPU Watt-hours compared to traditional deployment. As our second contribution, we then identify how the disaggregation constructs could be met at different abstraction levels for NVIDIA GPU computing stack. We introduce the notion of Disaggregation Plane to understand the feasibility and limitations of a disaggregated solution We then evaluate various GPU disaggregation solution approaches with Disaggregation plane using the following metrics: 1) Composability, 2) Independent existence, and 3) Backward Compatibility. Based on this analysis, we then propose EMF: a rack-level, open system for GPU Disaggregation. EMF, in addition to supporting core disaggregation constructs (i.e. independent existence and composability) also provides backward compatibility. We highlight some key design abstractions, elements, and some pressing issues in realizing the system while presenting the design of EMF. Lastly, we evaluate performance impact by quantifying worst-case latency overheads due to disaggregation. We model Host device driver and GPU interactions for data transfer operations over PCIe in terms of TLPs to understand the performance impact due to our design. Further evaluation with 6 Deep Learning applications shows that these overheads could vary from 7.6% to 20.2%, justifying the practicality of our design. We found that the latency overheads are directly correlated with the Average Throughput of the application and applications with short-lifetimes having bursty data-transfer characteristics may show visible performance degradation.

Abstract:
In the seventies the first signals of change, the first production decays have arisen, in great extent due to the oil crisis, the world-wide financial markets dereguiation and its immediate consequence, the shake in the global commerce. New entrants in the global scene, the Asians have become ferocious competitors. In the mid eighties the effective market leadership had effectively change in favour of the Asians. In face of this challenge, the better prepared organisations have sharpened methods, developed techniques and instruments and laid out rules adequate to the circumstances. By means of the sum effect of ali these changes and novelties an integration of such new procedures arises, the BPR-Business Process Reengineering-with a greater levei of added value. Its dynamics is based upon a new concept envisaged lo promote and control change, besides helping organisations to compete in a new environment. In this context, besides the tonic on quality, new and shorter operational targets (manufaeturing, timeto- market cicies etc.) are aimed at. This is not a gradual approach but a disruptive one since organizations are restructured about business processes as opposite to the classic functional areas.<br>N/A

Kieu, Thanh Thi. "Implementating the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights in Vietnam." Thesis, 2009. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/25916/.

Abstract:
This is a mapping of WTO members‟ obligations under TRIPs against the national laws of Vietnam implementing those obligations. Vietnam has produced comprehensive substantive laws harmonizing its intellectual property laws with the intellectual property laws of the international community. These substantive laws are complemented by procedural laws also required by TRIPs for the enforcement of intellectual property rights. The analysis focuses on how flexibilities within the obligations under TRIPs have been exercised by Vietnam to adapt those obligations to meet its own circumstances as a developing country. It seeks to frame the flexibilities within the wider context of the problems of law, sometimes overlooked in transplant of law analysis, including the ambiguity of language, conflicting rules of interpretation, lack of comprehensiveness, unpredictable technological and social change, and the limitations on law and policy makers including lack of knowledge and experience and conflicts between them over policies which are not resolved in the legal text. These are exacerbated where law is transposed from other national legal systems, through international law, into ones with differences in traditions and culture such as Vietnam. Its agricultural, Confucian, Buddhist and socialist heritage neither valued nor saw the products of human creativity as individually owned property. Vietnam has not always chosen to use the flexibilities within TRIPs to make laws appropriate to its economic and social situation. The generality of its national law creates ambiguities and gaps making it difficult for administrators and judges to apply in the absence of further administrative regulation or guidance on its implementation. The failure to fill these gaps reflects the reality that although the law is comprehensive Vietnamese law and policy makers are not sufficiently familiar with policies relating such laws to levels of development or with their practical application.
