Abstract:
Logistics and Information System Development are hot topics in today’s business world. Although many studies have been conducted on these two areas, information about logistics costs is still lacking in many companies. Information Systems are tools that, if properly developed, aid organizations in processing data and providing information with speed, accuracy and quality to its intended users. A lacking in the relation between the business world and the Information System’s world was apparent in a studied company’s self-developed Enterprise Resource Planning system, where information about logistics costs was neglected. A case study made in this same studied company, show the importance of seven different logistics costs types and its related information. Using the analysis of the material gathered from both literary work and this case study, it was determined what information about logistics costs is neglected by the manufacturing organization’s self-developed ERP-system. Finally, it was concluded what information on these logistics costs that should be considered by manufacturing organizations for facilitating the understanding of total product cost of specific products and which may not be supported by these systems.

Abstract:
Background:           Blockchain technology is recently receiving a lot of attention from researchers as well as from many different industries. There are promising application areas for the logistics sector like digital document exchange and tracking of goods, but there is no existing research on these topics. This thesis aims to contribute to the research of information systems in logistics in combination with Blockchain technology.     Purpose:                  The purpose of this research is to explore the capabilities of Blockchain technology regarding the concepts of privacy, transparency and trust. In addition, the requirements of information systems in logistics regarding the mentioned concepts are studied and brought in relation to the capabilities of Blockchain technology. The goal is to contribute to a theoretical discussion on the role of Blockchain technology in improving the flow of goods and the flow of information in logistics.   Method:                   The research is carried out in the form of an explorative case study. Blockchain technology has not been studied previously in a logistics setting and therefore, an inductive research approach is chosen by using thematic analysis. The case study is based on a pilot test which had the goal to facilitate a Blockchain to exchange documents and track shipments.   Conclusion:             The findings reflect that the research on Blockchain technology is still in its infancy and that it still takes several years to facilitate the technology in a productive environment. The Blockchain has the capabilities to meet the requirements of information systems in logistics due to the ability to create trust and establish an organisation overarching platform to exchange information.

Manufacturing supply chains are invariably dynamic and complicated in nature. Hence, steady state models are not sufficient for analyzing and designing supply chains. Models of supply chains must accurately capture their dynamic behavior, which is determined by the structure of the organization, and the policies adopted by management. System dynamics modeling provides a powerful framework for this purpose. The use of system dynamics models in supply chain management has thus far been limited to explaining phenomenon like the bullwhip effect, and for policy development. We provide a structured approach for policy design, which doesnâ t rely on any simulation experiments. Further, we study the impact that information network design has on the response of supply chains. We use a combinatorial approach to develop guidelines for information network design. Further, we examine the possibility of utilizing a PID information feedback structure to enhance the responsiveness of the supply chain. Lastly, we propose a combined feedback feed-forward information structure to enable a supply chain to rapidly respond to disturbances whose effects are known. The goal of this dissertation is to provide a structured approach for the design of information network structure, and operating policy.<br>Ph. D.

Abstract:
Lean is a method used mainly in assembly manufacturing to streamline production by eliminating various types of waste. The use of Lean in the process industry is currently limited. Some critics say, the use of the tools in Lean is very limited, while others argue that the approach of the method needs to be adapted to the conditions that exist in the process industry. Since Lean aims to eliminate waste, there is a tool called value stream map that is used to map material and information flow to identify waste in the manufacturing industry. The thesis was conducted as a case study at BillerudKorsnäs Karlsborg's paper production, where the purpose was to investigate how value stream mapping can be applied in the paper industry, with the aim of identifying and eliminating non-value-creating activities. While performing the value stream map, several problem areas were identified within the information and material flow. The most important were considered maintenance of the production equipment as well as product and material handling. This led, among other things, to recommendations for expanding finished goods inventory and introducing better documentation, to create inventory management strategies to reduce inventory levels in material inventories. Following a value stream map, it was also concluded that the applicability of the tool was considered good since activities and problem areas could be identified synoptically.<br>Lean är en metod som främst används inom stycktillverkning för att kunna effektivisera produktionen genom eliminering av olika typer av slöserier. Användningen av Lean inom processindustrin är i dagsläget begränsad, somliga kritiker menar på att användandet av de verktyg som Lean erbjuder är väldigt begränsade medan andra hävdar att metodernas angreppssätt behöver anpassas efter de förutsättningar som finns inom processindustrin. Då Lean syftar till att eliminera slöserier finns det ett verktyg som heter värdeflödesanalys som används för att kartlägga material- och informationsflöde för att kunna identifiera slöserier inom tillverkningsindustrin. Examensarbetet utfördes som en fallstudie på BillerudKorsnäs papperstillverkning i Karlsborg där syftet var att undersöka hur värdeflödesanalys kan tillämpas inom pappersindustrin med målsättningen att identifiera och eliminera icke värdeskapande aktiviteter. Vid utförandet av värdeflödesanalysen identifierades en mängd problemområden inom information- och materialflödet. De mest väsentliga ansågs vara underhåll av produktionsutrustningen samt produkt- och materialhantering. Detta ledde bland annat till rekommendationer att utöka färdigvarulager samt införa bättre dokumentation, för att skapa lagerhanteringsstrategier med syfte att minska lagernivåer i materialager. Efter genomförd värdeflödesanalys kunde även slutsatserna dras att tillämpbarheten av verktyget ansågs vara god då aktiviteter och problemområden kunde identifieras på ett överskådligt sätt.

This bachelor thesis was conducted in a distribution center that desired to improve its internal communication and information flow. This is a challenge that many large organizations have today, as copious amount of information is communicated daily between different parties within an organization. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to examine the communication and information flow in a distribution center and examine whether it can be more efficient with the help of Lean. The following questions have been formulated based on the stated aim: What are the visual and communication challenges in a distribution center and how can a visual and communicative environment contribute to Lean production? How can organizations overcome the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities that arise when implementing visual communication? In order to answer the questions above, a case study and a literature study have been carried out. The case study has been conducted at a national distribution center in Mälardalen in parallel with a literature study which, among other things, concerned the areas of visual communication, implementation and Lean. The literature study was conducted to gain an understanding of the concerned subject on the case company, interviews and observations were carried out to get an insight into the organization and collect data. The visual communication contributes to a majority of positive consequences if applied correctly. As a result, the case company can potentially improve the information and communication flow with the help of implementing visual tools, as it can contribute to increasing understanding and that important information reaches more employees.

I det här examensarbetet undersöks den upplevda arbetsbelastningen vid ruttplanering i ECDIS. Syftet med studien är att undersöka hur svenska däcksbefäl inom handelssjöfarten upplever arbetsbelastningen vid ruttplanering med ECDIS. Studien syftar vidare till att undersöka vilka moment under ruttplanering i ECDIS däcksbefäl uppfattar som mest belastande. Studien är avgränsad till svenska sjöbefäl med erfarenhet av ruttplanering ombord. Resultaten visar att informanterna upplever problem med hårdvaran som levereras med installationen av ECDIS, ibland så stora problem att de ombord byter ut den medföljande hårdvaran mot annan hårdvara. De upplever även att det inte finns optimal arbetsyta vid arbete i ECDIS samt att det saknas avsatt tid till ruttplanering.

<p> The future success of traffic management is contingent upon the advancement of information logistic systems. The ability to provide accurate, valid, and timely information is critical to the effectiveness of an intelligent transportation system&rsquo;s ability to improve public safety and economic growth. Traffic Operation Centers (TOC) receive and disseminate information with various actors in real-time and near real-time environments. Using the traffic incident management business process for a Traffic Operation Center, this research explores the effects of designing a traffic management system in context to the business process. Two system designs for a TOC are compared using the system architecture maps and incident duration time stamps captured during the use of each system. The results show the impact of using process-oriented information logistics (POIL) during the design phase when developing traffic management systems. </p><p>

Abstract:
This research aims to develop a realistic solution to enhance the efficiency of a transport logistics operation. The case study in this research is one of the largest agricultural suppliers in Northern Thailand. The cost of logistics in Thailand is relatively high compared to other countries, i.e. 11% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2007, and is particularly high in agricultural sector. The focus of the study is to enhance and improve transportation activities which typically account for the largest cost in logistics. The research is entitled ‘RFID enabled constraint based scheduling for transport logistics ’ The dissertation studies two important research components: 1) the data acquisition using Radio Frequency Identification Technology (RFID) for monitoring vehicles in a depot and 2) the scheduling by solving Constraint Satisfaction Optimisation Problem (CSOP) using Constraint Programming (CP). The scheduling problem of the research is to compose and schedule a fleet in which both private and subcontracting (outsourcing) vehicles are available, but to minimise the use of subcontractors. Several contributions from this study can be identified at each stage of the study ranging from extensively reviewing the literature, field studies, developing the RFID prototype system for vehicle tracking, modelling and solving the defined scheduling problems using Constraint Programming, developing a RFID-CP based real time scheduling, and validating the proposed methods. A number of validations are also carried out throughout the research. For instance, laboratory based experiments were conducted to measure the performance of the developed RFID tracking system in different configurations. Scenario tests were used to test the correctness of the proposed CP-based scheduling system, and structure interviews were used to collect feedbacks on the developed prototype from the case study company.

Många företag har under de senaste åren haft en god tillväxt inom deras organisationer som har påverkat både företagets interna och externa organisationsstruktur. Det som främst har påverkat företagen är globaliseringen då de geografiska gränserna har suddats ut, vilket har lett till att efterfrågan på produkter har ökat vilket ökar även kraven på transporterna. Tidigare forskning belyser att vid tillväxtperioder ökar företagens transportkostnader markant och kräver därför en ökad kontroll över dessa kostnader. Studiens valda teoretiska ramverk har använts för att identifiera och visuellt belysa de informationslogistiska effekterna av tillväxt. Syftet med studien har varit att utifrån ett informationslogistiskt perspektiv undersöka ett tillverkande företags effekter under en period av expansiv tillväxt med avgränsning till transporter. Studiens forskningsfrågor har besvarats med hjälp utav en kvalitativ metod med semistrukturerade intervjuer för att samla in empiri. Den insamlade empirin har analyserats genom tre olika tillvägagångssätt som är beskrivning, systematisering och kategorisering samt tagit det etniska övervägandet i beaktning. Resultatet av studien har påvisat att det administrativa arbetet på fallföretaget inte har prioriterats under en tillväxtperiod. Det har lett till att organisationen har fått en okontrollerad informationshantering. Genom det framtagna teoretiska ramverket TOEI, kunde resultatet analyseras och identifiera de informationslogistiska effekterna i de fyra huvudkategorierna teknik, organisation, miljö och individ. Det visade på att fallföretaget har påverkats av den snabba tillväxten och det kan bekräftas att riskfaktorerna av tillväxt är informationsöverflöd, ökade arbetsuppgifter, tidsbrist samt okontrollerade kostnadsunderlag.<br>Many companies have experienced growth within their organizations over the past fewyears, which has influenced these companies’ internal and external organizational structure.Companies have been affected by globalization since the geographical boundaries have been erased, which has led to an increase in demand for products and transportationrequirements. Previous research shows that there is a significant increase in a company’stransportation costs during periods of growth, which therefore requires an improved control over these costs. Based on the purpose of the research was to find a suitable and theoretical framework in order to identify and visually highlight the Information logistics’ effects by growth. The purpose of this research was to investigate and explore the effects of expansive growth during a specific period of time and how that effects a manufacturing company through an Information logistics perspective, with limitation to transport. The research in this study has been answered with the help of a qualitative method in which semi-structured interviews have been used to collect empirical data. Then this data has been analyzed through the three different approaches which is description, systematisation and categorization and the answers are handled ethically. The result of the case study showed that the administrative work has not been prioritized during a period of growth. Through the developed theoretical framework TOEI, the result has been analyzed and the Information logistics’ effects could be identified in the four main categories technical, organizational, environmental and individual. The case study concluded that companies affected by rapid growth experience the following risk factors: information overflow, increasing work assignment, lack of time and uncontrolled cost support.

Abstract:
The methods for collecting travel data about travellers today incorporate either fully manual or semi-automatic elements, which makes the methods susceptible to errors. The travellers might respond subjectively rather than objectively or even wholly incorrect, albeit with or without purpose. For certain types of studies, these are still valid methods for collecting data. However, for specific target groups, it might be hard to respond using these methods, either because of physical or psychological limitations. One of these target groups that is increasing rapidly is elderly in general, and dementia patients in particular, who suffer from fluctuating cognitive skills and memory. These conditions affect the recipient’s ability to answer truthfully and correctly. However, in the strive to form more accessible urban environments, the information regarding the need and behaviour of the said target group is crucial, meaning that new methods for collecting travel data need to be created. The three papers included in this licentiate thesis present the development and trial of a new method for fully automated data collection using biometric data as a dimension. The method attempts to determine how the recipient is affected by the elements presented to them while they travel, such as the built environment, based on the variations in the biometric data dimension. With the rapid advancements in information and communication technology, many new artefacts which open for new possible methods of data collection has been launched and are widely available. The methods and artefacts are not capable of meeting the requirements for the type of data collection method that would be needed to cater to the target group by themselves. However, by combing several types of currently available artefacts and methods, it is theoretically possible to cover the gaps of each artefact and method to create versatile methods for data collection (Paper I). Such methods require tools for physical operationalisation. An exploratory development process has led to the creation of a software tool which could be used with several types of consumer hardware, which means that it would theoretically be possible to conduct extensive surveys fast with low costs where participants utilise their own hardware (Paper II). In order to uncover the usefulness of the tool, an analysis was conducted on a limited dataset which had been collected as a result of a trial of the tool. In an attempt to prove the hypothesis “it is possible to understand how much the dimensions of data collected in specific locations affect the stress of travellers using heart rate as the dependent variable”, data-driven methods of data analysis were explored and utilised. Simple clustering methods, which disregarded any weighting on the dimensions, uncovered if there was any valuable information in the dataset at all. A model had to be created in order to understand better how the different dimensions of the collected data affected the participant (Paper III). This set of papers should indicate whether this type of method is feasible to pursue with the current means of widely available technology and what sort of significance the collected data might hold when analysed with appropriate analysis methods.<br>Metoderna för att samla in resedata från dagens resenärer inkorporerar antingen helt manuella eller halvautomatiska element, vilket gör dessa metoder mottagliga för fel. Resenärerna kan svara subjektivt snarare än objektivet eller helt inkorrekt, antingen med eller utan avsikt. För vissa typer av studier så är dessa metoder fortfarande meningsfulla att använda för datainsamling. Men för särskilda målgrupper kan det vara svårt att svara på undersökningar som använder dessa metoder, antingen på grund av fysiologiska eller psykologiska begränsningar. En av dessa målgrupper, som är stadigt växande, är den äldre befolkningen generellt, men framförallt demenspatienter, som lider av sviktande kognitiva förmågor och minne. Dessa tillstånd påverkar den svarandes förmåga att svara sanningsenligt och korret. Men i strävan efter att skapa mer tillgängliga stadsmiljöer så är informationen angående behovet och beteendet hos den nämnda målgruppen av yttersta vikt, vilket innebär att nya metoder för att samla in resedata behöver skapas. De tre artiklar som har inkluderats i denna avhandling presenterar utvecklingen och försökstestandet av en ny metod för helt automatisk datainsamling med användandet av biometriska data som en dimension. Metoden försöker att avgöra hur den svarande blir påverkad av element de stöter på medan de reser, såsom det byggda samhället, baserat på variationer i den biometriska datadimensionen. Med de snabba framstegen inom informations- och kommunikationsteknik så har nya artefakter som öppnar för nya möjliga metoder av datainsamling lanserats och är allmänt tillgängliga. Dessa metoder och artefakter är inte kapabla till att möta de krav som ställs för den typ av datainsamlingsmetod som krävs för att kunna tillgodose målgruppen på egen hand. Men genom att kombinera flera typer av de nu tillgängliga artefakterna och metoderna så är det teoretiskt möjligt att täcka luckorna som finns i varje artefakt och metod för att skapa en mer mångsidig metod för datainsamling (Artikel I). Sådana metoder kräver verktyg för att fysiskt operationaliseras. En explorativ utvecklingsprocess har lett till skapandet av ett mjukvaruverktyg som skulle kunna användas med flera typer av konsumenttillgänglig hårdvara, vilket betyder att det skulle vara teoretiskt möjligt att genomföra stora undersökningar snabbt med låga kostnader där deltagarna använder sin egen hårdvara (Artikel II). För att förstå användbarheten av verktyget så gjordes en analys på ett begränsat data-set som hade blivit insamlat som ett resultat av ett försökstestande av verktyget. I ett försök att bevisa hypotesen ”det är möjligt att förstå hur mycket dimensionerna av data som samlats in vid specifika platser påverkar stressen hos resenärer med hjälp av puls som den beroende variabeln” så utforskades och användes data-drivna metoder av dataanalys. Enkla metoder, som inte la någon särskild vikt vid någon särskild dimension, användes för att visa om det fanns någon värdefull information i data-setet överhuvudtaget. En modell behövde skapas för att bättre förstå hur de olika dimensionerna av den insamlade datan påverkar deltagaren (Artikel III). Denna samling artiklar är tänkt att ge en indikation på om denna typ av metodik är rimlig att fortsätta utveckla givet de nu tillgängliga teknologierna och vilken sorts signifikans den insamlade datan kan innehålla när den har analyserats med lämpliga analysmetoder.

<p>This study aims to evaluate the use of the method Information Demand Analysis (henceforth IDA) against an analysis tool. To gain empirical understanding of IDA, the method will be applied to a cooperation process between two business organisations. The research questions of the study are to investigate what can be required of a method, to identify the information demand for the above mentioned cooperation process, and to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the use of IDA.</p><p>Based on a literature study an evaluation framework, which describes what can be required of a method, was developed. The evaluation framework resulted in an analysis tool, which consists of the elements: method content, method user, method context, method validation, the method creator’s requirements, and the wishes and expectations of the business organisations. The use of IDA implied scoping to delimit the problem situation and a workshop to identify the information demand. In order to gain an understanding of the use of the method IDA, and to identify the information demand, the method was applied to a cooperation process between Steel AB and Wood AB. The information demand was later represented in Extended Enterprise Modelling Language (henceforth EEML). Finally, we analysed if and how the elements in the analysis tool were reflected in IDA and identified the strengths and weaknesses of the use of the method.</p><p>The strengths of IDA are that it is general and applicable on different types of business organisations. Furthermore, it has well defined concepts and the possibility of selecting appropriate concepts ensures that it is applicable on different problem situations. The business organisations, which participated in the workshop, found that IDA resulted in a holistic view and increased the understanding for each other. The weaknesses of IDA are lack of documentation of explicitly defined steps, the implications for selecting certain concepts, guidance, and explicitly described notations. Concerning the involved roles, in IDA, we request a description of them, their responsibilities, and the needed knowledge sets and skills for using the method. Since IDA still is under development we had difficulties understanding how our outcome of the method should fulfil the purpose of IDA.</p>

Vehicles that today are searching for a place to stop impacts other vehicles in cities. It can also be seen that the number of vehicles that desire to conduct a pick-up or drop-off increases with an increased number of ride-hailing services. New technology routing advises for such vehicles could improve the overall performance of a traffic network. This thesis analyses therefore how a routing strategy, that incorporates curbside availability information, can impact the performance. To analyse the effects of how curbside availability information can impact a network, a microscopic traffic simulation model was constructed in PTV Vissim and two different routing strategies were developed and implemented in the model. One strategy that represents the scenario of today where vehicles searches the traffic network while attempting to make a stop at a pick-up and drop-off slot. The second strategy routes vehicles to a slot based on curbside availability information. This strategy directs vehicles to an available slot and therefore reduces the time a vehicle is cruising before a stop has been made. A simulation experiment was set-up to compare the strategies that were developed with different penetration rates of vehicles that desired to stop. The results shows that the average travel time can be reduced with up to 25.2\% when vehicles have information compared to the scenario with no information. Similar findings is identified for average delay per vehicle which is reduced with up to 49.0\% and average traveled distance decreased with up to 15.5\%. The results of this thesis needs however to be studied in a wider context in order to draw reliable conclusions. The thesis propose further investigations whether a strategy that incorporates availability information can be implemented in a real world scenario and further investigations whether an implementation of a strategy like this would be socioeconomic beneficial.

Über erfolgreiche Nutzung oder Nicht- Akzeptanz entscheiden dabei häufig nicht nur Eigenschaften der Systeme und der zugrunde liegenden Technologien selbst, sondern Merkmale der beteiligten Unternehmen, ihrer Beziehungen zueinander oder der marktlichen Rahmenbedingungen. Zudem ist zu berücksichtigen, dass der Nutzen vieler IOS mit zunehmender Anzahl beteiligter Partner steigt und folglich auch Netzwerkeffekte zu berücksichtigen sind. Information and communication technology (ICT) had a huge impact on the healthcare services and the Internet plays an important role in forming patients’ attitudes towards health related services. Although the Internet mentioned as one of the major contributors in todays’ Information Overload (IO), common notion is that healthcare sector has been remained immune of IO effects. Throughout an action research, this study showed that IO has significant impact on treatment sessions of patients suffering from chronicle mental disorders in two ways. Firstly, patients’ acquired information from the Internet bombards physician in the treatment sessions, which eventually slows down the treatment process. Secondly, protocols and administrative procedures are subject to change, which leads to frustrating relearning cycles due to the huge amount of information attaching to them. Also, physicians have a tendency to keep themselves updated about new achievements in their field, which adds to the IO problem. In an attempt to enhance the situation an application model purposed in the second half of this research, which uses social web as a platform to provide a service based on Information Logistics (IL) principles to deal with the problem of IO.

An information system (IS) is a group of components which can increase the competitiveness and gain better information for decision making.Consequently, many organisations decide to implement IS in order to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of their organisations. However, a lack of awareness of numerous and varied challenging issues surrounding the implemenation process could be problematic for the whole process. Furthermore, the problem of a lack of key success issues seems to be a serious obstacle for the management information system (MIS) implementation process. Additionally, MIS implementation has effects on an organisation and these effects are related to the consequences of the business processes. Consequently, this issue is critical and crucial for an organisation to consider when they implement a new MIS. The main purpose of this thesis is to present the MIS implementation challenges or problems together with identifying the key issues to successfully achieve implementation. Such challenges and success factors are conducted based on a research framework. In addition, this research accesses descriptions of implementation effects and consequences which impact the organisation and its processes.This thesis has been conducted by studying the theory divided into three parts including:general background literature of information systems, implementation aspects, and organisational impacts literature. The methods that were used to successfullly accomplish this study were a case study of Fenix System, collecting data by personal interviews with respondents who were involved in Fenix along with internal documents.The analysis of the research framework and empirical findings has contributed to adescription of the main challenges and key success issues regarding MIS implementation, together with an identification of important effects and consequences when implementing MIS. This thesis’s main results show that MIS implementation issurrounded with challenges which mainly concern management, adminsitration, and people issues involved in MIS implementation process. Additionally, it was concluded that the key issues which the MIS implementation project should be presented with primarily focused on the project team and their team work. The last main finding is concentrated on effects and consequences and it found out that MIS implementation mainly affects business process which lead to change, for instance jobs, routines, and so forth.

Allt fler företag väljer att lägga ut sin logistikverksamhet på ett tredjepartlogistikföretag för att möta kundbehovet. Ett av dessa företag är Servistik. Servistik vill utveckla informationshantering för att skapa ytterligare effektivitet. Detta examensarbete syftar till att ge förståelse för hur information hanteras i nuläget, likheter och skillnader i informationshantering och hur det påverkar Servistik. Examensarbetet är avgränsat till informationshantering på fyra godsmottagningar tillhörande två av Servistiks dotterbolag. För att samla in data gällande informationshanteringen i nuläget har alla fyra godsmottagningar besökts och intervjuer samt observationer har genomförts. Två olika metoder används för att säkerställa sanningshalten i insamlad data. Ytterligare har även olika personer inom liknande områden observerats och intervjuats för att nå hög tillförlitlighet. Datainsamlingen har skapat förståelse för nuläget och vilka moment som ingår i godsmottagningsprocessen. De moment som ingår är lossning, ankomstregistrering, skanning och inre spridning. Likheter och skillnader har identifierats; en av likheterna är bristande inflöde av information. Det skapar problem och avbrott inom alla moment samt mer arbete för både godsmottagare och kund då de behöver tillhandahålla information som saknas. De likheter och skillnader som har identifierats påverkar främst Servistiks möjlighet till ökad effektivitet. De faktorer som påverkas är bättre och förenklad hantering kring information, inhämtandet av information samt förmedlade av information. I nuläget används verktyg på godsmottagningarna som kan bidra till ökad effektivitet. Genom att ta del av varandras verktyg kan godsmottagningarna och medarbetarna utvecklas till att arbeta på ett standardiserat sätt. Detta bidrar även till social hållbarhet inom företaget då alla arbetar mot gemensamma mål. För att effektivisera informationshanteringen kan det tillgängliga IT-systemet utvecklas för att möta grundläggande standarder som specificeras efter branschens behov. IT-system kan skapa statistik i samband med att ett moment utförs och skapa ett underlag hur väl godsmottagningarna presterar. Underlaget kan även användas för att tydliggöra fel och brister som finns och uppstår vid informationshantering.

The focus of this thesis is to study what and how information flows can be used to improve Demand responsive transport (DRT) systems by understanding potential users and how they could be willing to participate in DRT to a higher degree. The viewpoint of this thesis tends to lean towards a DRT service of a public transport type. This thesis studies users in relation to what interaction and information they perceive to be needed in dealing with a DRT service and the different pros and cons with various approaches. The study gathers information by performing adapted qualitative interviews with a select number of users between the ages of 20-35. The participants give their views on three DRT scenarios and reflect on DRT in general as a concept presented to them through a tangible mocked-up interactive prototype.  The thesis makes several distinct findings. The importance of pricing a DRT service correctly is vital to the users, as several participants in the study relied on pricing for decision-making. It also finds that the usage of zones as nomenclature is confusing to many users. The services must be dependable and punctual to both attract users, keep users, and build trust among the general populace. This study shows that DRT services could be a difficult concept to introduce to users. DRT could be introduced as a complement or as an alternative to conventional public transport. An important factor is a well-designed flow of information in the application to keep the user engaged and involved. It is shown that the usability of the application is a cornerstone for a theoretical DRT service to excel. Context is important where DRT and ridesharing would have a higher success rate. Nighttime in urban areas could be a niche market, due to the irregularity, delay, or interruption of regular public transport services at these hours.

<p>Mobile computing and wireless systems are becoming more common as wireless technology evolves. Many authors argue that wireless systems can provide advantages and value to organisations, such as increased efficiency and effectiveness. Literature also shows that wireless systems especially suits companies within the logistics industry. However, some authors also highlight disadvantages regarding these solutions, for example insufficient security.</p><p>The purpose of this thesis is to present advantages and disadvantages for organisations regarding usage of wireless systems in a warehouse setting, and the factors that have an influence over these advantages and disadvantages.</p><p>This purpose is fulfilled with the aid of a qualitative study at Maersk Logistics in Torsvik, Jönköping where a number of respondents were interviewed. The study began with a literature study covering different aspects of wireless systems. The literature study was used to construct an interview guide, and also as a foundation for the analysis.</p><p>The empirical study shows that the wireless system at Maersk Logistics provides value to the organisation at both the operational and management level. The effectiveness and efficiency in the daily work increases and the system generates accurate information that forms a good foundation for the decision-making process. The study also shows that precautions need to be taken when using a wireless system, since the organisation becomes very dependent on the system.</p><br><p>Mobil datoranvändning och trådlösa system blir mer och mer vanliga i och med utvecklingen av trådlös teknik. Många författare hävdar att trådlösa system bidrar med fördelar och tillför värde till en organisation, exempelvis högre effek-tivitet. Litteraturen visar även att trådlösa system är speciellt lämpade inom logistikindustrin. Vissa författare belyser dock nackdelar relaterade till de här lösningarna, exempelvis bristande säkerhet.</p><p>Syftet med denna uppsats är att presentera fördelar och nackdelar för organisa-tioner rörande användande av trådlösa system i lagermiljö, och de faktorer som påverkar dessa fördelar och nackdelar.</p><p>Syftet uppfylls med hjälp av en kvalitativ studie på Maersk Logistics i Torsvik, Jönköping där ett antal respondenter har intervjuats. Studien inleddes med en litteraturstudie som omfattade olika aspekter av trådlösa system. Litteraturstudien låg sedan till grund för konstruktion av intervjuguide och genomförande av intervjuerna, och även som underlag för analysen.</p><p>Den empiriska studien visar att det trådlösa systemet på Maersk Logistics tillför värde i en organisation både på driftsnivå och på managementnivå. Effektiviteten i det dagliga arbetet blir högre och systemet bidrar med korrekt information som bildar ett bättre underlag för beslutsprocessen. Studien visar också att försiktighetsåtgärder måste vidtas vid användandet av ett trådlöst system eftersom organisationen blir väldigt beroende av systemet.</p>

Purpose – The purpose of the research is to increase the understanding of how insufficient information sharing between internal stakeholders can be mitigated during new product development projects. Two research questions were formulated to conduct answers to the purpose.  Why is it crucial to mitigate insufficient information sharing between internal stakeholders during new product development projects? How can potential challenges during new product development projects be mitigated through information sharing between internal stakeholders? Method – To create an understanding of information sharing a literature review was conducted, which formed the foundation of the theoretical framework. Through a case study at SAAB Training &amp; Simulation, interviews were used as the main source for empirical data. Document studies and observations were used to triangulate the findings. The collected data and theoretical framework were analyzed and discussed to propose improvements. Findings – The research findings indicate that an insufficient information flow can cause several challenges related to deadlines, profit and how information is interpreted. It should therefore be a prioritization for an organization to constantly improve how information is shared between internal stakeholders during new product development projects. Additionally, the research analysis suggests that organizations’ need to allocate more time for educational opportunities. Implications – The research highlighted a new perspective on previous research within the area. Through the research analysis statements and theories made by other researchers were further strengthened. The research suggests ways of improving information sharing between internal stakeholders. The result can be used by other industrial organizations working with new product development projects to improve their information sharing to mitigate challenges connected to insufficient information sharing. Limitations – Due to the complexity of information sharing within new product development projects, the research was limited to one case company. Additionally, mainly managers were interviewed which posed a risk that the collected data only provided an overview rather than a deep insight in the processes of sharing information between internal stakeholders. If the authors were to use several organizations and conduct more interviews, the results could increase the credibility and generalizability of the research.

Thus, humanity suffers from the negative effects of carbon dioxide, especially Ukraine suffers from this. Based on statistics, in 2018 in Ukraine CO2 emissions amounted to more than 225 thousand tons, and Kyiv as of March 2021 ranks 12th in the ranking of cities in the world in terms of air pollution. Undoubtedly, the logistics sector is involved in increasing these emissions, which account for about 15% of total CO2 emissions.<br>Останнім часом особлива увага приділяється занадто великим постійним викидам СО2 в атмосферу, які згубно впливають на озоновий шар, який, у свою чергу, стає основною причиною зміни клімату на планеті. Таким чином, людство страждає від негативного впливу вуглекислого газу, особливо від цього страждає Україна. За статистичними даними, у 2018 році в Україні викиди СО2 становили понад 225 тис. Тонн, а Київ станом на березень 2021 р. Посідає 12 місце у рейтингу міст світу за рівнем забруднення атмосферного повітря. Безсумнівно, логістичний сектор бере участь у збільшенні цих викидів, на які припадає близько 15% загальних викидів CO2.

ABSTRACT Optimizing the Pistachio Supply Chain and Logistics Network for Fresno County Using Geographic Information Systems Network Analysis Method Farnaz Daneshpour This study aims to optimize the transportation of pistachios from orchards to processing centers in Fresno County, California to improve logistics efficiency and reduce environmental impacts. This study evaluates the current transportation situation and compared it with the case in which a new processing center is built. Also, this study evaluates transportation efficiency based on calculations of total driving distance, driving time, fuel cost, and Co2 emission and assesses how much of these variables will be saved if a new facility center is built. This study also explores optimal locations for pistachio cultivation, based on soil characteristics such as soil pH, type, and drainage class and compared these locations to current pistachio orchards. The study is based on data from 52 pistachio orchards in Fresno County, 11 existing large scale processing centers in the Central Valley, the current transportation network, and soil survey data. Location allocation and closest facility analyses using Network Analysis in ESRI ArcGIS are carried out on two scenarios; first for allocation of the orchards to existing processing centers and second, reallocation of orchards considering a new processing facility in the area. A Center of Gravity model is used to determine an optimal location of the new processing facility in Fresno County. Comparing two scenarios shows that there is 41% of saving in distance, Co2 emission, fuel cost, and driving time in a harvesting period by considering the new processing center in Fresno County. Locating the new facility center in the area can make positive improvements towards logistics efficiency and environmental issues.

Abstract:
This paper examines the process of employing four kinds of information systems in fourth-party logistics. The paper mainly tries to answer research questions: what is fourth-party logistics and information systems; what are benefits and barriers for using four kinds of information systems (RFID, WMS, EDI, Electronic marketplace) with the help of fourth-party logistics; what are unique benefits and barriers for fourth-party logistics to employ the four kinds of information systems and how to overcome the difficulties. To answer the research question, qualitative case study approach was employed and two case companies were chosen. Information in literature review was collected from secondary data for example scientific paper. Information in findings was collected from interviews of people in charge of the project and internal reports.   Definitions of fourth-party logistics and information system were reviewed in literature review. The differences between fourth-party logistics and third-party logistics were presented as well. In addition, categorization of various kinds of advanced information systems was also listed.   Benefits and barriers organized from literature and case studies were gathered and compared in discussion. Two significant benefits were identified: opportunities to do businesses with leading companies and improved efficiency. Two main barriers are confusion of the concept of fourth-party logistics and terminology of information system and financial justification. There are different opinions between the two case companies, literature review and empirical data, and between different literature. The paper concluded that there are many benefits and barriers for employing the four kinds of information systems in fourth-party logistics, and the future development of it is promising.

<p>The demand for shorter lead-times and increased delivery reliability puts pressure on companies to provide more efficient logistic services. One strategy to deal with this demand is by outsourcing logistics to a third part. The development of logistics information systems enables increased control over business supply chains. This is why Green Cargo aims to create a Logistics Control Tower (LCT) solution to provide it’s customers with better information with higher availability. One such system is the Green Cargo control tower solution, which aims to improve information quality and availability alike. This is also the origin of this thesis at Green Cargo Division Logistics. The aim of this project was to identify the information needs in the logistic processes connected to Green Cargo Division Logistics, and to present a requirement specification for a LCT. The LCT will be designed to work as an information and decision support system. The main source of information was collected through interviews with customers of Green Cargo, as well as personnel at Green Cargo. </p><p>The research findings suggest that there is potential for improvement within the information flow between Green Cargo and the other parties involved in the logistic process. A need for improved information flows and communication became apparent through the investigation. We therefore suggest that Green Cargo develops a LCT containing functions such as cost follow-up, statistics, stock level information, order information, proof of delivery, track&trace, notification, environment information, and invoice control. Whilst some of these functions are yet to be introduced, others are basic functions already provided for by Green Cargo, but could nonetheless be improved. Most of the suggested functions are generated through the customers needs while invoice control and automated notification is a demand from Green Cargo personnel. A web interface with the possibility to adapt the content to different customers could serve as a solution to these needs. Input to the LCT is collected from different information systems such as vendor management systems and databases at logistic service providers.</p>

The concept of logistics, which until the mid-50 was limited to physical distribution - transport docks and warehouses due to its beginnings in the great empires and armies, has become much more complex and comprehensive. Nowadays it integrates processes involving the entire geographic scope, encompassing material flows, information and products from the point of origin (suppliers) to the point of consumption (client), among several companies throughout the supply chain. Thus, this chain management has become essential for survival, where the changes occur within a dynamic, unstable and evolving scenario. Consumers are increasingly demanding and product life cycles are shrinking. Companies seek to optimize their processes by creating a competitive advantage with perceived value, reducing operational costs, managing effectively and efficiently throughout the flow to exceed the customers expectations. This thesis aims to investigate whether the geographic information system (GIS) supports the distribution centers in the physical distribution logistics decisions. The study is based on literature review and field research covering 36 distribution centers in the region of Greater Sao Paulo that interact with the region of Vale do Paraíba Paulista, distribution centers that use geographic information system (GIS) as strategy in the physical distribution chain and 12 distribution centers that do not use this system. The research result allows the discussion of the advantages of using Geographic Information System (GIS) in the physical distribution logistics decisions in the distribution centers studied. It is concluded that the use of GIS can support and facilitate the decision making of Physical Distribution Logistics positive influence on reducing logistics costs, the risk of lack of materials and delivery lead time, extending its benefits to an improvement in their performance resulting in an increase in market share. The use of GIS can also be useful and valuable for analysis and decision making in Public Transport Sector in order to improve the infrastructure of Brazilian modal transportation and create more efficient multimodal networks, ensuring the flow of materials for domestic and foreign markets.<br>O conceito de Logística, que até meados dos anos 50 restringia-se à distribuição física armazéns e docas de transporte, em razão da prática nos seus primórdios, à época dos grandes impérios e exércitos da Antiguidade, tornou-se hoje muito mais complexo e abrangente. O conceito atual integra os processos, em todo o escopo geográfico, decorrente dos fluxos de materiais, produtos e informações, desde o ponto de origem (fornecedores) até o ponto de consumo (cliente) e entre as diversas empresas de toda a cadeia de suprimentos. Assim, a gestão dessa cadeia tornou-se fundamental para a sobrevivência das empresas, em um cenário dinâmico, instável e evolutivo. Os consumidores estão cada vez mais exigentes e os produtos com ciclos de vida cada vez menores, o que faz com que as empresas busquem otimizar seus processos criando uma vantagem competitiva com valor percebido, reduzindo os custos operacionais, controlando de forma eficaz e eficiente todo o fluxo, a fim de superar as expectativas de seus clientes. Esta dissertação tem como objetivo investigar se o Sistema de Informação Geográfica (GIS) apoia os Centros de Distribuição nas decisões logísticas de distribuição física. O estudo tem como base a revisão bibliográfica, a pesquisa de campo englobando 36 Centros de Distribuição da região da Grande São Paulo que interagem com a região do Vale do Paraíba Paulista, Centros de Distribuição que utilizam o sistema de informação geográfica (GIS) como estratégia na cadeia de distribuição física e, 12 Centros de Distribuição que não utilizam esse sistema. O resultado da pesquisa indica haver vantagens na utilização do Sistema de Informação Geográfica (GIS) nas decisões logísticas de distribuição física nos Centros de Distribuição estudados. Conclui-se que a utilização do GIS pode apoiar e facilitar a tomada de decisão logística de Distribuição Física influenciando positivamente na redução de custos logísticos, do risco da falta de materiais e no lead time de entrega, estendendo seus benefícios para uma melhoria em seu desempenho, resultando em um crescimento da participação de mercado. O uso do GIS pode, ainda, ser útil e valioso para a análise e tomada de decisão em Políticas Públicas do Setor de Transportes com o objetivo de melhorar a infraestrutura de modais de transportes Brasileira e criar redes multimodais mais eficientes, garantindo o escoamento de materiais para o mercado interno e externo.

The early observation and elimination of non-recurring incidents is a crucial task in trafficmanagement. The performance of the conventional incident detection methods (trafficcameras and other sensory technologies) is limited and there are still challenges inobtaining an accurate picture of the traffic conditions in real time. During the last decade,the technical development of mobile platforms and the growing online connectivity made itpossible to obtain traffic information from social media and applications based on spatialcrowdsourcing. Utilizing the benefits of crowdsourcing, traffic authorities can receiveinformation about a more comprehensive number of incidents and can monitor areaswhich are not covered by the conventional incident detection systems. The crowdsourcedtraffic data can provide supplementary information for incidents already reported throughother sources and it can contribute to earlier detection of incidents, which can lead tofaster response and clearance time. Furthermore, spatial crowdsourcing can help to detectincident types, which are not collected systematically yet (e.g. potholes, traffic light faults,missing road signs). However, before exploiting crowdsourced traffic data in trafficmanagement, numerous challenges need to be resolved, such as verification of the incidentreports, predicting the severity of the crowdsourced incidents and integration with trafficdata obtained from other sources.During this thesis, the possibilities and challenges of utilizing spatial crowdsourcingtechnologies to detect non-recurring incidents were examined in form of a case study.Traffic incident alerts obtained from Waze, a navigation application using the concept ofcrowdsourcing, were analyzed and compared with officially verified incident reports inStockholm. The thesis provides insight into the spatial and temporal characteristics of theWaze data. Moreover, a method to identify related Waze alerts and to determine matchingincident reports from different sources is presented. The results showed that the number ofreported incidents in Waze is 4,5 times higher than the number of registered incidents bythe Swedish authorities. Furthermore, 27,5 % of the incidents could have been detectedfaster by using the traffic alerts from Waze. In addition, the severity of Waze alerts isexamined depending on the attributes of the alerts.

Thesis (MTech (Business Information Systems))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.<br>Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems have a good reputation for automation and strength in the integration of business processes (BPs), therefore more and more organisations are adopting ERP systems. The City of Cape Town (CCT), a metropolitan municipality, is one of the organisations that have adopted an ERP system. CCT provides a wide range of services to residents and citizens in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. The ERP system at CCT manages the Supply Chain Management (SCM) processes, among others, to ensure good service delivery. ERP systems are able to provide statistical reports on stock-outs; however, the information provided is insufficient to link a specific stock-out to its causes within the SCM process at CCT. This makes it difficult to select the most appropriate solution to minimise the causes and number of stock-outs. The study aims to explore the possible reduction of the causes of stock-outs at CCT stores, therefore the study has adopted a qualitative research methodology with a case study research strategy. It uses subjectivism to understand the truth, with an inductive approach applied to five different interviewee groups, namely the ERP Support Department consultants, the Procurement Department, the Inventory and Stores Management Department, the Master Data Maintenance Department, and the reservation creators. A purposive sampling method is used because the study targets knowledge and experience on the subject from the interviewees in the investigation of the problem. The case is the SCM division at CCT, the unit of analysis is the CCT stores, and the unit of observation is the employees who work for the SCM division of CCT. All ethical procedures and policies of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) are adhered to. For the data collection, in depth semi-structured questions have been developed, and the data were analysed using thematic analysis. The leading causes of stock-outs were discovered by analysing the themes. The results revealed the themes, in descending order according to the causes of stock-outs, as follows: procedures, service delivery, suppliers, stock-outs, human resources, and systems. All the objectives were achieved, thereby answering the research questions.
