ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Information technology systems are an integral part of many sectors of business and the application of information technology in new sectors of business is increasing continually. Businesses believe that by applying information technology systems in their business processes they will ultimately improve on the profits through increased operational efficiency, reduction of costs and improved ability to make informed decisions. However implementing an information technology system is usually a complex affair involving the technology supplier, client organisation and other stakeholders. The common method of implementing information technology systems is to set up a project in an attempt to manage the cross organisational and cross departmental issues as best as possible. Industry reports that the success of information technology project implementation is low. This study project has analysed 16 sources of literature pertaining to failures in information technology projects, in order to ascertain how the various authors define a project failure and whether project management failure is a major contributor to these failures. Also to examine areas within project management which are deemed to make the most significant contribution to project failure. The study concludes that most of the authors examined define project failure in terms of project management criteria, being cost, time and function (quality). Furthermore it concludes that project management failure is a significant factor in information technology project failure and that the facets of project management failure encountered with information systems implementation projects are not that different from other forms of projects. The main contributing factors being lack of executive support, lack of business case or user requirements, lack of project management expertise, lack of planning, lack of user involvement and changing requirements. The study recommends that organisations need to be aware of the cross functional and cross organisational requirements of information technology project management and that all levels of management in stakeholder organisations need to have the relevant knowledge and experience to deal with these requirements.

Abstract:
Alignment of information technology (IT) projects remains a concern for business executives and negatively impacts IT investments through failed projects. Drawing from the theory of systems thinking and the concept of holism, the purpose of this correlational study was to provide executive leaders with information about influences associated with the independent variables of project alignment and performance outputs, and the dependent variable, project success rates. Accordingly, the research question addressed the relationship between the 2-predictor variables and the outcome variable. Data collection involved a nonprobability, purposive sample of 49 credentialed project managers from Arizona who completed an online survey. Results from multiple linear regression analysis indicated statistically significant relationships between the predictor variables (F (2, 46) = 111.08, p < .001). The regression model predicted 82% of the variation resulted from the independent variables. The study's findings provide corporate leaders with a better understanding of project alignment, performance outputs, and project success rates from the operations perspective of project management professionals who contribute to the organization's competitive advantage through the implementation of strategic IT projects. The positive social change implications of this study include increased organization benefits, such as substantiated IT investments and higher profits. Increased project success rates substantiate IT investments through improved customer satisfaction and financial performance. Improved financial performance leads to higher profits, which leads to higher wages. Higher wages contributes positively to society-at-large through an enhanced quality of life.

The primary purpose of this research is to identify the roles of the project sponsor that impacts information technology (IT) project success. Recent emphasis has been placed on the importance of top management support, more specifically, on the individual that typically provides the direction and funding, the project sponsor. Furthermore, although most project management bodies of knowledge recognise the importance of the role of project sponsor in achieving project success, and while it is evident that cognition of the significance of the project sponsor role in the research literature is increasing in both the project management and general literature, sparse research exists specifying exactly what behaviours constitute the role of an effective sponsor in ultimately delivering a successful project.

Abstract:
Information systems (IS) projects are complex and costly, but only a 3rd of IS projects are successful; the Standish Group reported that 32% of IS projects were successful in 2012. Although investments in research have led to improvements in practice, there is a general perception that management failures are responsible for the low rate of IS project success. The effects of initiating factors on project outcome had not been sufficiently explored; few IS researchers have explored the initiation phase. The purpose of this grounded theory study was to explore project initiation factors, including relational, as well as decision-making aspects, and how they might be addressed to enhance the possibility of success. The research questions were oriented at identifying key initiation factors, how they might be managed to promote project success, and how decision-making factors at initiation might facilitate project success. A conceptual framework consisting of chaos theory and Ashby's law of requisite variety was used. Purposive and snowballing sampling techniques were used, and 24 IS managers and project managers were interviewed. A 3-stage data analysis approach was used and included open coding, focused coding, and theoretical coding. Key themes identified included project governance and management, as well as stakeholder engagement. The emergent theory of IS project initiation indicated that the factors represented by the themes must be identified during initiation but implemented throughout the project lifecycle to ensure project success. Positive social change may be realized as IS managers, and project managers apply the findings and recommendations to achieve project success and avoid costly failures thus benefiting both companies and customers.

A survey was conducted to investigate motivational and satisfaction differences between Information Systems (IS) and non-IS personnel working in various non-IS organizational departments. The motivational factors of Motivating Potential Score (MPS), Growth Need Strength (GNS), Social Need Strength (SNS), Average Psychological Score (APS), and Overall Satisfaction Score (OSS) were measured. Control for occupational group differences was achieved by classifying survey respondents into one of two job categories: Managerial or Professional/Technical. Significant differences were found in the GNS scores and SNSs of the two job categories. Several implications of the research findings are discussed and recommendations are made with respect to future studies.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Ensuring the delivery of an investment is crucial for organisations as significant amounts of operating and capital expenditure is spent on information systems. Regrettably, many organisations today have no accurate techniques for forecasting and warranting the success of information system projects and many rely on the traditional project management triple constraint criteria alone, which encapsulate time, cost, and quality. Many chief executive officers (CEOs), chief information officers (CIOs) and other executives have difficulty in justifying their investments and return on investment (ROI) in information systems. Since the 1970s many articles have been written and much research conducted on the topic of information system project success. However, there is still no consensus on an agreed upon definition and robust methodology to measure the success of information system projects (ISPs). This research attempted to determine if organisations measure the success of their ISPs. In addition, the researcher aimed to pinpoint what key success factors and critical success criteria organisations use, and how these are applied to measure information system project success (ISPS). To reach these objectives, qualitative research was conducted by means of a study of the literature on the topic, a pilot survey, and semi-structured interviews in order to gather expert opinions and information pertaining to the measurement of ISPS in industry. It was found that most project managers and companies still rely on the traditional triple constraint to determine the success of their information system projects. Moreover, this phenomenon exists due to a lack of knowledge on the topic, top management buy-in, time and resources, and a perception that the costs to get a measurement system in place outweigh the benefits to be gained from it.

The extant research literature on Information Systems (IS) project management illustrates that there is considerable confusion about the true nature of IS project management. The bewilderment is expressed in a number of ways. Practitioners are reporting that there is considerable mismatch between the prescribed practices they are socialised into and their actual experiences of project work. Appropriately, there are also debates about what constitutes project success and about what factors influence project success and failure. Whilst these fundamentals are being debated there are also concerns expressed about the lack of adequate underlying theoretical constructs to give coherence to the kinds of questions raised. As the essence of IS project management is being debated there is evidence suggesting that the project-driven organisational form is growing in popularity. Together with the concerns there are proposals being offered as alternatives to improve understanding of project management. The review undertaken in this thesis illustrates that alternatives are emerging despite the existence of an entrenched value system that makes society prone to unwittingly accept and be attracted to the adoption of best practices such as PMBOK, which is central to the debate taking place in IS project management.

IT investments constitute a major portion of the capital budgets of many organizations. It can be challenging to select the right projects that fit the corporate strategy to maximize value for the organization. In the past, senior executives focused on projects that met three criteria, namely being on-time, on budget and in scope. However, a shift has occurred as a result of the fact that senior executives are more concerned about the right mix of projects that will best utilise the organization's resources and deliver long-range growth. Some of the benefits of IT Project Portfolio Management (IT PPM) are to provide executives with the ability to monitor projects ensure business alignment and identify risks quickly. Research shows that information technology (IT) projects have a poor success rate. Many IT projects exceed the allocated budget, take longer than the time allocated or do not meet the project requirements. The purpose of this study is to identify the critical success factors for implementing an IT project plan in automotive assembly firms in South Africa. The factors identified during the study cover the following topics: the project manager as a factor of success; project communication; knowledge management; the role of management; business strategy; project success measurements; and training and development. For the empirical study an online questionnaire was used as a data collection tool. The study consisted of 40 participants who are involved in the implementation of IT projects in automotive assembly firms with a minimum of 1 year experience. The questionnaire requested the biographical information of the participants and then asked the participants about their perception of the current project activity as well as their perceived importance of the project activities mentioned. The participants’ responses were structured according to a Likert-type scale. Participants had to indicate the extent to which they agreed with each statement in the questionnaire. The responses obtained from the survey were presented and analysed. The researcher observed in this study that aspects of the critical success factors were in place however there were areas which showed large variances. The researcher recommends that management of automotive assembly firms in South Africa should look into project communication and knowledge management. These factors showed large variances with regards to the current project activities and the perceived importance of the activities.

It is widely acknowledged that the information Systems (IS) industry suffers from a high failure rate with regards to IS development projects. Much of the effort to improve IS project performance has been focussed on technological issues. However, there is an increasing body of evidence that suggests that the nature of the problems facing the teams that are assigned to these projects is more sociological than technological. As the adoption and utilisation of teams becomes more prolific in the IS industry, it is becoming increasingly important to develop team composition methods that take the compatibility of team members into consideration. Many IS team member selection strategies are based primarily on the traditionally measurable skills of individuals. Yet, selecting a team in which the members have the appropriate skills does not guarantee that the individuals in the team will combine to form an effective and cohesive unit. Several team effectiveness models relating to sociological constructs have been developed in past research. These identify variables that have been predicted to influence the effectiveness of various types of teams. This research proposes a model that demonstrates the extent to which certain variables that have been identified in the literature influence the effectiveness of IS project teams. Through this assessment, it is possible to isolate the variables that have a significant impact on IS team effectiveness, thereby highlighting some of the sociological issues that should be considered when selecting team members. The relationships in the model were tested through a questionnaire that was distributed amongst 33 Information Systems project teams. Individuals in 4 of the teams submitted incomplete responses, thereby yielding a final sample of 29 teams comprising 163 individuals. Where possible, all questions were based on previously validated instruments. Initial construct validity was improved by removing 2 items from the questionnaire. Certain constructs were broken into 2 dimensions, yielding a set of constructs with reasonably high validity. All construct measures in the instrument were shown to be statistically reliable. It was found that certain variables did have a significant impact on the effectiveness of IS project teams. The predicted relationships that were supported were those between skill heterogeneity and IS team effectiveness, and between team role balance and IS team effectiveness. It was shown that individuals are more likely to combine to form an effective team if they are diverse in terms of their skills and abilities. The members should also fulfil team roles that combine to provide the team with a team role profile that is balanced. The levels of cohesion within the teams mediated the relationship between skill heterogeneity and IS team effectiveness. A strong correlation between cohesion and IS team effectiveness was demonstrated. One of the relationships in the research model that was not supported was that between background heterogeneity and IS team effectiveness. it was initially predicted that teams in which members displayed a diverse set of backgrounds, expertise, and experience would be more effective than those that did not. The diversity levels of these characteristics within IS project teams were shown to have no influence on the effectiveness of the teams. Past research in which the impact of background heterogeneity on team effectiveness has been examined has also yielded mixed results. It is recommended that future research examine this relationship more closely as an increasingly migrant global work force will ensure that this issue wilt be one of the key issues facing IS management in the future. It is also suggested that research into the area of IS team composition variables be specific to both the type of IS project being undertaken, and the lifecycle stage in which the project is operating.

Approximately half of the information systems (IS) projects implemented each year are considered failures. These failed projects cost billions of dollars annually. Failures can be due to projects being delivered late, over-budget, abandoned after significant time and resource investment, or failing to achieve desired results. More often than not, the failure of a project is not due to technical issues, but due to social and business-related problems. These issues can include a communication breakdown and lack of participation by project stakeholders; lack of a business case and success criteria for a project; failure to review project status, delays and revisions; and unrealistic schedules. While educators cannot address the issue of project failure in information systems directly, they can target the need to build collaboration skills and sensitivity to project business and social issues in students. The building of these skills and sensitivities can lead to more effective project team members and managers. Conversely, there is little evidence that higher education prepares students to be collaborators. One goal of this research was to determine to what extent students demonstrated group knowledge construction through online discussion of project issues presented in a real-world business scenarios. The Interaction Analysis Model for Examining Social Construction of Knowledge in Computer Conferencing (IAM) was chosen to measure group knowledge construction through discussions in a series of project problem scenarios. A second goal was to determine to what extent the knowledge construction through group discussion increases students' perceived level of awareness of information systems projects' social and business issues. Both goals of this research were realized to some extent. This study demonstrated that by the use of scenarios to expose students to typical social and business causes of failure in information systems projects, awareness of these issues could be enhanced between the pre-test and post-test groups. This study also demonstrated that through participation in discussion groups, individuals can demonstrate significant growth in collaboration skills. Further research should examine a population that has more balance with regard to gender of the participants, and should consider the influence of "guided reflection" provided by instructors.

Abstract:
Project control systems often fail to support management in achieving their global project goals. This thesis proposes a Multidimensional Project Control System (MPCS) as an approach for quantifying deviations from the planning phase to the execution phase with respect to the global project control specification (GPCS). The projects' current state must be translated into yield terms, which are expressed as a gap vector that represents the multidimensional deviation from the global project control specification. The MPCS methodology allows the project manager to determine: integrated project status; where problems exist in the project; when and where to take corrective action; and how to measure improvement. However, implementing the MPCS methodology does not require extra data collation. MPCS deals with the control of a single project and defines the project performances in comparison with the plan. The progression of several projects in parallel is a common situation in organizations, therefore a comparison of the various project performances is required. It is proposed that a comparison process be performed using the data envelope analysis (DEA) approach. The reference points for examining the performances of different projects and the directions of improvement for the projects are not necessarily found on the efficiency frontier. An algorithm is developed for applying multi-project system control having a relatively large number of inputs and outputs while maintaining the validity of the DEA methodology. The DEA output allows the diagnosis of those found on the efficiency frontier and those that need improvement.

Abstract:
The goal of the project is to research new technologies and ways to create high speed and high performance applications in order to deal with GeoSpatial data. The research data set used is GEO-located Tweets. Twitter is chosen for its high data amount, accessibility and because of its relevance to cellular network optimization. Beyond the research part of the project, the end product will be used to increase cellular trace accuracy through the use of the highly accurate GEO-located-Tweets.The result of the final product is showing great potential. An interactive web map rendering 700 million Tweets up to a 10 by 10 meter resolution within seconds, while also allowing the user to pan and navigate the map without any performance issues. The scope of the project includes the entire process, from aggregating Tweets with a Java program, storing them in a PostgreSQL+PostGIS database, creating maps and GIS-files with MapServer, to presenting Maps and serving downloadable files in a Django web application utilizing OpenLayers. The used procedures are explained and justified in great detail throughout this report. Many project managers and business leaders lack effective strategies to control internal factors that affect information systems (IS) projects, which may impede leadership's ability to respond to market changes. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies used by 6 purposefully selected project managers who successfully implemented information system development (ISD) projects by controlling the internal factors that affected different ISD project phases in Puerto Rico's telecommunication service industry. The framework that guided this study was coordination theory. The data collection process included semistructured interviews and project documentation including business requirements, project charters, project plans, and lessons learned which also served as resources for member checking and validation to strengthen the trustworthiness of the study. Analysis of the data occurred following Yin's 5 analytical steps of validating, coding, interpreting, summarizing, and generating themes. The 5 themes that emerged were top management support, clear requirements, communication, project plan, and lessons learned. Each theme corresponded to a phase of the project life cycle. Top management support and clear requirements were the top critical factors (TCF) in the initiating and planning phases. Communication and project plan were the TCF in the executing, monitoring, and controlling phases. Lessons learned were the TCF in the closing phase of the project. Implications for social change include helping IS project managers successfully implement IS projects, providing innovative services to customers, and improving an organization's position so it can provide jobs and economic stability in the region in which it operates.

However, the history of software development is filled with failures, late deliveries, cost overruns, and user dissatisfaction. Ongoing efforts are being made to enhance the processes and techniques used in the management of software projects, but despite the gains that have been made in the past decade, we still lack an understanding of the modern software development process, especially in the area of management and control of environmental resource dependence. The objective of this research has been to study and model the general management strategies, processes, and techniques used in managing software projects from a resource dependence perspective. A survey of the literature and a survey of computer professionals were conducted to gain insight into the problems and opportunities in managing software development projects. Based on the literature and the survey findings, an integrated model for software project management was developed. This model was tested against data collected from a large software development project at a major corporation. Software project management trends were further explored by reviewing the latest development in software project management tools. From the findings of the model test and the review of software tools, a set of opportunities for future research in software project management were suggested.

In this study the researcher applied an Information Systems Project Delivery Methodology (ISPDM) for implementing a Web-based Program Management System in an organization that did not have one. The problem investigated in this study was the difficulty encountered when organizations implement ISPDMs. The research questions were (1) what is the role of each of Roberts' et al. five factors in the implementation of an ISPDM? And (2) how effective is a Web-based program management system implemented using an ISPDM in meeting the participants desired outcomes? The general approach utilized to address the research questions was to describe the implementation of a Web-based program management ISPDM using a single descriptive case study. A survey, focus group, and usability testing were utilized at three different stages of the Web-based program management module's implementation. In conducting this study research, multiple sources of data were collected to develop an in-depth description of the case as it developed. The open-ended survey was given at three different points, the beginning, the middle and the end of the ISPDM Web based program management module implementation. A focus group was conducted for planning evaluation to assess the participant's desired outcomes for the Web-based program management system. A focus group for in-process evaluation assessed the extent to which the Web-based program management module achieved the outcome measures. A focus group for summative evaluation determined whether or not the final product met the expectations of the users. In addition, a usability survey was conducted in conjunction with the in-process and summative evaluation focus groups. The results of this study indicated the role of organizational transition when implementing a Web-based program management system using an ISPDM is to provide training, education, and communications. The role of functional management involvement/support during the implementation process is to provide resources and lead the process of adopting the new methodology. The role of the ISPDM during the transition stage is to communicate the change and to foster cultural integration, provide a framework for using the product, and to provide training. The role of the use of software development models in the implementation process is to provide guidelines, framework, metrics, and to lend credibility to the value of the methodology. The role of external support during the implementation process is to provide an industry-wide knowledge base, oversight, and an independent review of the new methodology.

PMOs are complex organisational-specific entities. Companies are increasingly establishing PMOs in search of more favourable outcomes for their projects. However, these PMO organisational structures are rarely found to survive and are often disbanded or transformed every few years. The PMOs implemented in the public sector are faced with the task of justifying their value to business over time. These PMOs function in particularly stressful environments as they run complex projects that are driven by politics. The public sector provides a unique context in that organisational transformation is likely to occur every few years with the election of a new political cabinet. The notion of a PMO is a relatively new phenomenon with limited research available at present. There are few practical and theoretical guidelines identified in the research literature. The public sector environment has received even lesser research despite offering a unique organisational structure that commonly undertakes large, complex and political-focussed projects. The purpose of this study is to seek a better understanding of the contribution made to public sector PMO value in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. An understanding of the efficiency and effectiveness factors involved can aid managers in identifying where to focus their efforts to ensure value-add of new services and products are achieved in the public sector. A mixed method research approach was employed to investigate the public sector PMO organisational environment case study, using interviews and a complementary survey. A model of the factors that contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of a PMO was derived from the research literature. This was followed by an in-depth case study of a public sector PMO. The factors relevant to the case study were captured using interviews and then analysed using thematic analysis. The results were then compared to the model. The study revealed that most of the public sectors PMOs (77%) was found to be structured as virtual PMO offices with varying levels of capacity and authority. The results of the survey found that most of the PMOs focus in terms of efficiency was on productivity (60%), planning (20%), and profit (20%). In terms of effectiveness, the foci were mainly on responsiveness (40%) and flexibility, adaption and innovation (60%). It was concluded that project management maturity could be significantly improved by focussing on the areas that were lacking for these PMOs, i.e. benchmarking, hiring external consultants with PM knowledge and linking with external consultants.

The underlying philosophy of the agile manifesto is embodied in principle one which promotes the continuous delivery of software that is deemed valuable by the customer, while principle twelve encourages continual improvement of the delivery process. This constant improvement, or maturity, is not a concept unique to agile methods and is commonly referred to as a maturity model. The most common of maturity model is the Capability Maturity Model Integrated (CMMI). However, research consensus indicates CMMI is incompatible with agile implementation, specifically at higher levels of maturity without sacrificing agility. Agile maturity models, which are aligned to agile principles encourage continuous improvement while maintaining agility. Given the underlying philosophy of the agile manifesto, this research hypothesises that an increase in agile maturity is associated with improved perceived project success, by using a conceptual model based on an existing agile maturity model and how each of the maturity levels are related to the perceived project success. The research also brings to light the concept of perceived project success, showing success in an agile environment is a subjective concept. Conducted quantitatively, the findings of this research show which specific focus areas within each of the maturity levels is most strongly correlated with perceived project success and concludes an increasing correlation between the maturity levels and perceived project success.

Ineffective communication behavioral constructs in the workplace that lead to information technology (IT) project failure and in some cases organization failure are increasingly becoming a management concern. Despite this trend, there is little research on the communication behavioral constructs that contribute to IT project failure rates. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of business analysts, programmers, and programmer analysts pertaining to the behavioral constructs associated with effective and ineffective communication. The research questions addressed these behaviors from a conceptual framework based on communication theory, organizational information processing theory, and critical social theory. This framework guided data collection using electronic interviews of a snowball sample of social media participants. Data were coded using open and axial techniques, analyzed for themes and patterns, and member checked to bolster trustworthiness. Findings included 10 communication behavioral constructs that influence communication in IT software development teams. Included in the findings were potential options for improving communication among end users, management, programmers, and other employees. Recommendations to improve communication among stakeholders included involvement of the correct stakeholders, clear project requirements, frequent communication, active listening, and feedback. Other recommendations were stakeholder education and training, and knowledge of goals and processes. Implications for positive social change could be realized by using the findings to improve the way communication is addressed, shared, and implemented to reduce IT project failure for stakeholders.

Nowadays companies face continuous changes. Every change a firm face has to be carefully addressed by everyone in the organization but especially by leaders and the managerial team. However these changes not always produce monetary benefits. A change on the IS might increase productivity in one business area but it might not represent profit to the whole company. There are several change studies which can be used as guide by leaders when im-plementing a change. However none of these theories consider the possibility to improve efficiency as a result of the change. Neither to assure that after the IS change implementation the company‟s profitability increases. The theory of con-straints (TOC) is a useful tool which covers both of the issues mentioned before. This paper will combine several change theories with the theory of constraints. With this mixture of ideas we want to show leaders a new procedure on which they can relay on when dealing with the process of an IS change. This procedure should assure an increment on the productivity produce after the change. But also consider an addition to the company profitability. We studied three change related theories. We then revised the TOC and we com-pared all this recollected information with the way six leaders handled IS changes in their companies. These five companies were Dell, Cisco Systems, Desca, Ericsson, and Nortel. At the end we were able to identify critical success factors which any leader should consider when facing an IS change. These factors cover from the beginning of the IS change, the implementation of it and finally the way to make this change maximize the business performance.

This paper argues that currently there is a lack of powerful and easy to use, coordination support systems designed for non-professional users. To address this problem this paper proposes a novel approach to the coordination of projects. The approach is based on integrating minimalist task workspaces in web-based Task/Participant tables. The paper presents a further design of Tabula, a web-based coordination system that implements this approach. The concept and prototype of Tabula was explored in two user studies employing the focus group method. The groups included subjects that were active, respectively, Master students in HCI and high-school teachers. The results of the focus group will be presented and discussed. The improved version of Tabula implements novel interface- and coordination functionality as well as an alternative e-mail based interface.

This thesis explores the impact of using System Dynamics (SD) as a simulation tool to help learners understand complex, dynamic concepts in project management education, and specifically with the learning of the theory associated with Earned Value Management (EVM). SD simulation models have been used widely but mainly in business contexts to support managers in the decision making process. However the application of SD in the field of project management education has been limited and particularly in terms of assessing its potential impact to help improve learners’ skills and understanding about project management concepts. ‘Projects’ are considered to be complex information feedback systems, characterized by causality and underlying dynamic relations between multiple variables, and the ability of junior project managers to apply and experience higher practical skills in the management of these complex systems presents a real challenge in the higher education context. The ability of SD to simulate the behaviour of a system, to reveal the underlying relationships, and to help visualize its dynamic changes over time, makes SD a potential modelling tool to help supporting the learners in the project management education area. This study sets out to evaluate the use of SD in an instructional context to help postgraduate project management students to visualize and to more understand the complex dynamic relationships in the concept of EVM, a topic that features significantly in project management education. In this study, SD was deployed to teach EVM through a series of computer based models to visualize changes of multiple interacting variables over time. The SD simulations were evaluated and improved in a series of pilot and formal studies. In an experimentally controlled study involving 46 students, EVM content was delivered with SD simulations and using traditional methods respectively. Results, both quantitative and qualitative, demonstrated a positive impact of SD on the learning of the EVM concept. Recommendations of further work to deploy SD in the delivery of complex project management content and other challenging topics, with wider pool of learners are discussed.

The rapid advance in information and communication technologies has effectively facilitated the development and implementation of information systems (IS) projects in modern organizations for reorganizing their business processes and streamlining the provision of their products and services in today's dynamic environment. Such a development brings organizations with numerous benefits including increased automation of business processes, improved customer service, and timely provision of effective decision support. As a result, evaluating and selecting the most appropriate IS project for development and implementation from a pool of available IS projects becomes a critical decision to make in modern organizations. Evaluating and selecting appropriate IS projects for development in an organization, however, is complex and challenging. The complexity of the evaluation and selection process is due to the multi-dimensional nature of the decision making process, the conflicting nature of the multiple selection criteria, and the presence of subjectiveness and imprecision of the human decision making process. The challenging of the evaluation and selection comes from the need for making transparent and balanced decisions based on a comprehensive evaluation of all available IS projects in a timely manner. Much research has been done on the development of various approaches for evaluating and selecting IS projects, and numerous applications of those approaches for addressing real world IS project evaluation and selection problems have been reported in the literature. In general, existing approaches can be classified into (a) cost-benefit analysis based approaches, (b) utility based approaches, and (c) optimization oriented approaches. These approaches, however, are not totally satisfactory due to various shortcomings including (a) the inability to tackle the subjectiveness and imprecision of the selection process, (b) the failure to adequately handle the multi-dimensional nature of the problem, and (c) cognitively very demanding on the decision maker. To address these issues above, this research has developed three novel approaches for effectively solving the IS project evaluation and selection problem under uncertainty in an organization. The first approach is developed for helping the decision maker better model the subjectiveness and imprecision inherent in the decision-making process with the use of linguistic variables approximated by fuzzy numbers. The second approach is designed to reduce the cognitive demanding on the decision maker in the IS project evaluation and selection process with the introduction of fuzzy pairwise comparison. The third approach is formulated with respect to the use of intelligent decision support systems for facilitating the use of specific multi-criteria analysis approaches in relation to individual IS project evaluation and selection situations. The developed approaches have been applied for solving three IS project evaluation and selection problems in the real world settings. The results show that the three developed ap proaches are of practical significance for effectively and efficiently solving the IS project evaluation and selection problem due to (a) the simplicity and comprehensibility of the underlying concept, (b) the adequate handling of inherent uncertainty and imprecision, and (c) the ability to help the decision maker better understand the IS project selection problem and the implications of their decision behaviours.

Managing an information systems (IS) project is a challenging undertaking because of the very nature of these projects. The IS project manager is challenged with increasing and changing requirements, the management of technical resources and business users, and the delivery of the project to meet the business need in time and on budget. The high failure rate of projects in general is a concern for organizations as this can have serious repercussions for the business in terms of loss in turnover or business opportunities. The abilities that are required of an IS project manager in order to manage IS projects efficiently and successfully are of interest to both organizations and the IS project managers themselves. The mastery of project management competencies was previously regarded as being sufficient for successful project management. However, with the high rate of project failure, it became evident that successful project managers have other "soft" skills or abilities over and above these competencies that enable them to be successful. The leadership style that the project manager employs during the project can affect the outcome of the project. A transformational leader motivates and inspires the team to improve themselves and become more effective. Emotional Intelligence is a soft skill that enhances the project manager's ability to practice transformational leadership. This study examined the relationship between emotional intelligence and transformational leadership of South African project managers practicing specifically in the IS field. The study further explored the effect of demographic factors such as age, gender and occupational background on emotional intelligence and transformational leadership, and the relationship between the two constructs. Data was collected from a sample of 49 IS project managers based in South Africa. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire was used to determine leadership and the Genas El Inventory was used to determine the emotional intelligence of the participants. The results of the data analysis show a strong positive and significant relationship between the transformational leadership and emotional intelligence of South African IS project managers. None of the demographic factors had an effect on the relationship between emotional intelligence and transformational leadership. IS project managers with a more technical background showed lower average scores for both emotional intelligence and transformational leadership than their peers. Female IS project managers showed slightly higher average scores for both transformational leadership and emotional intelligence than their male counterparts. The results suggest that an increase in emotional intelligence can assist an IS project manager to effectively improve their transformational leadership skills. Further research into the appropriate interventions that should be introduced in order to increase emotional intelligence In South African project managers is advisable. The perceived effect on the project team and the success of the IS project manager after introducing these interventions should be measured. This will be useful in motivating South African organizations to facilitate and encourage their IS project managers to develop their emotional intelligence and transformational leadership skills in order to be more effective and achieve better results with IS project implementation.

This study examines IS project trajectories in a Saudi organisation showing how the project is shaped and re-shaped in day-to-day activities. Three project features are adapted to characterise project phenomena: project complexity, embeddedness and project learning. Accordingly, the first objective is to investigate project complexities showing how they are dynamically changed due re-defining project properties of goals, methods, deadlines and team relations. The second objective is to understand the interactions between project members and external groups and individual from the surrounding context and how those interactions shape and re-shape local project context. The third objective is to analyse the challenges which bound project members’ knowledgeability. The research methodology incorporates a self-ethnography over twelve months of participation and observation study of three IS projects in a Saudi organisation. Structuration theory is used to guide the research philosophically and to offer an analytical perspective to understand collected data. Structuration theory is implemented to highlight the dynamic nature of project trajectories taking into consideration that project is not a result of an isolated local context or shaped only according to surrounding organisational procedures: rather project trajectories are results of a series of recursive interactions between the project’s local and surrounding contexts, where project member’s knowledgeability plays a role in informing actions. This research can be considered as a theoretical contribution to IS project management literature. This study is situated in new project management literature as distinct from dominant traditional project management prescriptions. This study suggests a view of the project phenomenon merging the three separate project features: project complexity, embeddedness and learning. On the methodological level, this study introduces the project phenomenon as an ethnographic object stressing its dynamic and social nature embedded in daily activities. Finally, on the context level, this study contributes towards compensating for the paucity of studies about the context of Saudi Arabia in project management and management studies in general.

Effective communication among team members in software development projects is increasingly significant for the success of the project. Successful software projects are the catalyst for achieving profitability objectives and creating shareholder value in organizations. The purpose of this single case study was to investigate communication strategies information technology (IT) project managers used for successful team collaboration in software development. The population for this study comprised senior IT project managers. The project managers had supervision responsibilities from a midsized IT company in Alberta, Canada. The sociotechnical theory guided this study as the conceptual framework. Data were collected from semistructured interviews with 13 senior IT project managers on their experiences using effective communication strategies for team collaboration. A review of 11 company documents was conducted. Using methodological triangulation and member checking of original interview transcripts served to establish the trustworthiness of final interpretations. Through thematic analysis, 4 significant themes emerged from the study: effective communication, attributes of communication, the importance of social and emotional intelligence, and the impact of postwork activities for team collaboration. The findings of this study might bring about positive change by supporting senior project managers use of communication strategies for team collaborations in midsize IT companies to increase job satisfaction and project completion.

Managing projects in an organization, especially a project-oriented organization, is a challenging task. Project data has a large volume and is complex to manage. It is different from managing a single project, because one needs to integrate and synthesize information from multiple projects and multiple perspectives for high-level strategic business decisions, such as aligning projects with business objectives, balancing investment and expected return, and allocating resources. Current methods and tools either do not well integrate multiple aspects or are not intuitive and easy to use for managers and executives. In this dissertation project, a multidimensional and visual exploration approach was designed and evaluated to provide a unique and intuitive option to support decision making in project portfolio management. The research followed a general design science research methodology involving phases of awareness of problem, suggestion, development, evaluation and conclusion. The approach was implemented into a software system using a prototyping method and was evaluated through user interviews. The evaluation result demonstrates the utility and ease-of-use of the approach, and confirms design objectives. The research brings a new perspective and provides a new decision support tool for project portfolio management. It also contributes to the design knowledge of visual exploration systems for business portfolio management by theorizing the system.

Syftet med uppsatsen är att ge en bild av hur generella projektledningsmetoder används inom reklambranschen. Vi ville undersöka vilka aspekter av projektledningen som kan påverkas av de speciella förutsättningar som finns i reklambranschen. Varje reklamprojekt innehåller en skapandeprocess, och vi ville se hur sådant påverkar projektledningen.

Vi sammanställde först ett antal generella projektledningsmetoder för att få en teoretisk bild av hur projekt kan bedrivas. För att ge läsaren en inblick i reklambranschen och hur reklam skapas, beskrev vi även reklam ur ett teoretiskt perspektiv.

Med utgång från vår teori, genomförde vi en kvalitativ studie av sju reklambolag i Karlstad. Vi gjorde djupintervjuer med en projektledare från respektive byrå, under vilka de fick beskriva sitt projektarbete. Det empiriska resultatet från intervjuerna jämfördes sedan med den teori som låg till grund för undersökningen.

Undersökningen visade att reklambyråerna i stor utsträckning använde sig av projektledningsmetoder, i vissa fall utan att de själva var medvetna om det. Förstudien är inte särskilt omfattande från byråernas sida. Det är istället kunden som genomför det mesta av det arbete som vi skulle kalla förstudie. Planeringen av den kreativa arbetsprocessen var i de flesta fall så ostrukturerad som vi på förhand trott. Vi märkte även från vissa byråer en ovilja att strukturera planeringsarbetet, något som verkade bero på branschtraditioner. Efter att planeringen för projektet är gjord och idén tagits fram, har reklambyråerna ofta en produktionsledare som styr genomförandefasen. Projektledarna har då en marginaliserad roll, vilket är en skillnad gentemot gängse metodbeskrivningar inom akademin och näringslivet. Även om det fanns brister i planeringsarbetet, hade byråerna väl utarbetade rutiner inom andra delar av projektarbetet, framförallt för acceptansproceduren mellan byrå och kund.

Byråerna visade genomgående brister när det gäller rutiner för erfarenhetsutbyte mellan projekt. Slutrapporter skrivs inte, och lärdomar stannar därför hos dem som deltagit i det specifika projektet. Det riskerar att göra reklambyråerna beroende av att medarbetare stannar inom företaget.


The purpose of this essay was to study to which extent project management methods are used in advertising projects. We wanted to investigate which aspects of project management can be affected by the special conditions characterizing the advertisement business. All advertising projects demand a process of creation, and we wanted to see how that can affect the project management.

In order to create a picture of how projects can be run from a theoretic point of view, we made a compilation of a number of general project management methods. To give the reader an insight in the advertisement business and in how advertisement is produced, we also described advertisement from a theoretic point of view.

With our theoretic view as base, we carried out a qualitative study of seven local advertising agencies. We made in-depth interviews with project managers from all seven agencies respectively, during which they described their project processes. The empirical result from the interviews was then compared with the theories that formed the basis of the study.

The study showed that the advertising agencies to a great extent used project management methods, in some cases without themselves being aware of it. The agencies’ feasibility study is not especially comprehensive. Instead it is the clients that perform most of the work that we associate with feasibility studies. The planning of the creative work process was in most cases as unstructured as we had expected. We also noticed unwillingness from some agencies to make the planning process more structured, something that seemed to be due to business traditions. After the project planning is done and the idea for the campaign has been developed, the agencies often have a production manager to control the project execution phase. During the execution phase, the project manager has a marginalized role, something that differs from an academic view of project management. Even if the agencies had deficiencies in their planning processes, they had well elaborated acceptance procedures.

All agencies lacked routines for exchange of experience between projects. Final reports are not written, and lessons learned stay within the project team. This leaves the success of the agencies depending on their co-workers staying in the company.

Information systems (IS) development represents a significant area of research interest in the IS discipline. Despite this interest, IS development projects consistently fall short in delivering anticipated outcomes within time, quality and cost constraints. Attempts by researchers to uncover contributors to high failure rates are complicated by fragmented views of the nature of the problem. These range from challenges to the validity of performance reports to contesting the conceptualization of success. Furthermore, there is a tendency in practice to address immediate symptomatic problems of IS project failure rather than resolve the fundamental issues. Consequently, recent measures indicate that 48% of IS projects fail to meet time commitments, 33% exceed their budget, 32% don’t achieve their business objectives and 15% fail outright. This PhD thesis presents research to explore and offer explanatory theory of how culture and leadership are implicated in the performance of IS development projects. Importantly, IS development is positioned as a form of social interaction. Thus, an understanding of the social context and the situated meanings that arise through social interaction are necessary conditions to effectively explore this research topic. Within this context the study reveals the performative nature of IS development work and offers explanations for the actions of organizational leaders and IS technical specialists involved in IS development. An interpretive research paradigm and inductive reasoning were adopted for this research and understanding is developed through a hermeneutic mode of inquiry. Two IS projects responsible for delivering strategic benefit to an organization in the financial services sector are the two cases in this study. Qualitative data were collected through interviews, observation and documentary evidence between January 2017 and June 2017. The nature of the relationships between culture, leadership and performance in the course of IS development work was revealed through two analytical iterations. The first iteration used the theory of Cultural Implications in Information Systems Development as a structural framework to support a thematic analysis of the data. A second iteration used frame analysis as a theoretical foundation to examine the interplay of culture, leadership and performance through a within-case and cross-case analysis of the two cases. Key contributions from this research include the development of a conceptual model explaining cultural implications in IS development, the development of an explanatory theory of the entangled nature of culture and leadership and the performance of IS projects, and 11 propositions that offer a basis for testing the emergent theory in future empirical studies. The findings from the research also reveal the performative nature of IS development work and identify concepts important to organizational managers and IS technical specialists. While the theory emerged in the context of IS development projects and the concepts in the emergent theory are central to the practice of IS development, each could be equally relevant to other IS phenomena where culture, leadership and performance are implicated, such as IS management and offshoring. The grounding of theoretical concepts to empirical data enabled the application of the theory to practice; practical guidelines are offered in respect of the influences of culture and leadership on the performance of IS development projects. This research supports the suitability of the Cultural Dynamics Model as a sensitizing lens for data collection in interpretive studies where culture is implicated.

Project Knowledge Management and more specifically how organisations capture experiences gained in projects, is a critical topic in order to compete in the knowledge economy. Little attention has been given the catchphrase lessons learned practices as a research area. The purpose of the thesis is therefore to analyse the framework for the project closure phase through a Knowledge Management perspective. The purpose is also to evaluate how new knowledge, captured by project closure documents, can be identified and measured.

To fulfil the purpose, the project closure phase and project closure documents within the project model Practical Project Steering are studied. Through a document study, the framework that the project model gives, and the project closure documents is analysed. The project closure documents are also examined regarding the experiences they capture. This is done by developing an instrument for identifying and measuring new knowledge.

Through the study, it can be established that the project closure phase provides for a link between Knowledge Management and Project Management. It has an important contribution to Knowledge Management since it mitigates the risk of not transferring knowledge to the organisational memory. The use of predefined knowledge domains supports structure, and systemisation in the production of the documents, as well as in the compilation and dissemination of useful knowledge.

New knowledge within the project closure phase can be identified and measured by dividing the documents into isolated pieces of information and using developed criteria to identify, and thereby quantify new knowledge. The instrument is highly reliable since it is ensured that the division of information does not result in any decontextualisation, and since the criteria used are very stable, and still acknowledge the dynamics of knowledge as well as the knowledge context.

By using the measurements on empirical data, problems that are important to acknowledge are identified. There is an uneven distribution of knowledge types acquired by the project closure documents, regardless of their importance; resulting in loss of important knowledge. The difficulty to formalise important knowledge, results in failing to transfer knowledge to an external organisational memory. The difficulty to distribute knowledge sufficiently, results in re-invention of the wheel, and the same mistakes being made twice or more.

This paper evaluates how semi-randomly formed project groups, compared to forming groups at free will, affect students’ learning in a project-oriented setting. The findings are based on empirical data. We have analyzed students’ experiences by taking a course in the subject of Information Systems. The identified experiences are considered to be either a strength or a problem. We can conclude that how we form project groups has an effect on learning. We can also conclude that several of the experiences from semi-randomly formed project groups are of both a positive and negative nature. In the concluding chapter, we give some explanations in order to understand the differences in students’ experiences.

The use of Web-Based-Collaboration-Systems (WBCS) continues to grow as part of information technology development in the Architecture-Engineering-Construction (AEC) industry. WBCS provide different media channels to support collaboration across geographical distributed teams. However, many companies are still hesitant to integrate WBCS. This research provides an understanding of how WBCS are used in practice. Most distinctively, it obtained practice data from several major US architecture firms and examined about 30,000 transactions produced during actual design and planning projects as practicing architects, engineers and consultants used WBCS. The study investigated what information was used and exchanged among participants during the different design stages. This was related to the different media channels of WBCS. The raw project data has been coded and transformed into secondary data through computer-supported content analysis. Based upon categories from previous literature, such as communication, coordination and design theories, the data has been analyzed for sender, receiver, channel and content of information transmitted. The content has been characterized into work tasks, information handling behavior and design activities. Additional interviews with industry professionals produced information that had not been documented through WBCS and that corroborated the analytical findings. The combination of theory, quantitative, and qualitative analysis has been synthesized into a portrait of WBCS usage that was validated through triangulation. The analysis of digital records of design communication from practice through content analysis is a new research methodology in AEC. The evidence supporting design methods theory shows the changes in tasks and information handling in regards to the project phases. It indicates that the most frequent loops of design activity are Evaluation- Analysis-Synthesis and Evaluation-Synthesis-Evaluation. It documents the actual usage of WBCS based on descriptive statistics and Markov models. WBCS was used primarily as a document repository and calendaring tool. The remote team members used it more frequently than centrally located participants. The study shows the limitations of WBCS: none of the verbal communication was captured. More significant, the entire email exchange took place outside the WBCS. WBCS was used very extensively, if the implementation of the system supported the organizational structure and vice versa.
