Full textDespite national laws based on the international standards for accessibility reports shows that government websites aren’t accessible for disabled users. Guidelines for web accessibility in Sweden are based on the international standard WCAG 2.0, level AA of conformance which includes simple and understandable language and clear and easy overview of the navigation. Based on previous studies that identified problems thatcan’t be extracted from guidelines from the international standard (WCAG 2.0) argues that the web accessibility needs to be included earlier during the development process. The work behind the websites navigation and site structure falls under the methods and principles of information architecture. In this thesis, a study regarding how visually impaired user’s definition of usable navigation structures relate to methods and principles of information architecture will be presented. The study deepened the knowledge of the user groups behavior, use of strategies and preferences for navigations design. Data was collected during a user study based on participation observations and qualitative interview. The collected material from the study was compiled during qualitative analysis and was divided in two parts. The first analysis was focused on the user’s experiences and preferences and was summarized as a collection of themes. During the next stage the themes were analyzed in connection with the methods and principles of information architecture. The result indicates aspects that should be considered when practice methods and principles during the development of websites navigation and information architecture. Labels on heading and links are important to overview and navigate. Transformation of list of links and the placement of the lists in regard to other elements have impact on the experience of the navigation. The users follow conventions when searching for navigation elements. They prefer searching before browsing. Large amount of information, graphical elements and the mental model have an impact on information seeking as well as the effectiveness. The previous findings have been analyzed in connection with the methods and principles of information architecture and the following are considered important. Navigation systems should be expanded and designed to work outside it’s context. Names and labels have a great impact on the interaction and should be design to support scanning with the ears. Increased mental load affect the shape of the mental model and the capacity of theworking memory. Search systems are used often and are used to speed up the information seeking process. Lastly, the result indicated that the navigation stress test is not reliable as an evaluation method for visually impaired users and should not be used to evaluate the use of strategies, the user experience and user’s preferences.

Full textDistribution of information within an organization is an important part of the daily working routine. It is important that the right information in the right way. Our study aims to show how usability in information architecture can help a business to improve the way of provide information. Through a case study at Länstrafiken in Örebro it was investigated what kind of information the users want and how they want it distributed. The questions the study aims to answer are: - How can a usability perspective lead to improved information architecture? - How can the flow of information optimize with a usable information architecture? A useful information architecture is designed based on user needs. To answer the questions we used theories of usability and Zachman's framework, which describes information architecture based on six different issues. The study used two of these issues in order to develop artefacts to form an information architecture: Where and How. The first step in the study was to establish how the information architecture looks today based on qualitative interviews with employees at Länstrafiken. As a second step a questionnaire was designed for the company's customers to find out what kind of information they are interested in and how they want it distributed. Based on the responses from the respondents and the employees an information architecture with usability was developed. Usability can therefore affect the information architecture positive by letting the focus be on those who are involved in how information is being communicated. When the correct information goes through the right information channel in the most effective way the way of communicate the information gets optimized.

Full textOur mission was to create two different web sites. We have been involved in the entire process from idéa to finished product. We have developed web sites for RFSL’s campaign called Jag är fri (eng. I am free) and the music duo Laszlo & Tear. The web sites differ from each other – Jag är fri has a social benefit and Laszlo & Tear is classified as entertainment. We saw, however, a common denominator – both sites should operate in promotional porposes and the recipient should clearly understand the purpose. We wanted to examine the best way to reach out with the right message through information architecture and graphical interface. This paper resulted in a guide that contributes knowledge of how to develop simpler more user friendly web sites.

Full textBusiness value is ambiguous and very hard to define, but it is something that all enterprises strive for.The thesis focuses on specific quality characteristics defined by ISO / IEC FDIS 25010:2010 chapter "Quality in use". The thesis aims to evaluate the qualitative attributes and to find out if SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) contributes to these and in what aspect of business value. To answer the question it was relevant to define Business Value, Qualitative value and SOA.Our results are based on four qualitative interviews from respondents who have participated in a successful SOA project and have knowledge about SOA and it’s connection to business value in various aspects. We see indications that SOA contributes to the selected qualitative characteristics based on the litterature and result. The result also indicates that SOA contributes to qualitative value and that it is the driving force behind the pursuit of business value.

Full textToday imaging is more popular than ever. More pictures will be published in different ways since the market offers more, better and simpler cameras. Digital imaging is more than just a popular time-killer, it has become a way to communicate. Whatever their intended use, it is required a lot from the programs and systems that handle digital images. There is a great need, but also a requirement in many industries. Previous research shows that there is a gap of knowledge in imaging from a user-centered perspective. This essay is about imaging based on a user-centered approach with a focus on user experience and information architecture in the world of digital photo libraries. A positive user experience requires great user flow. The user shouldn’t have to be interrupted in their work due to a poor structure of the interface. Irritation and frustration should be avoided. Interfaces that manage other types of files and interfaces located on the Web and in "the cloud" have been delimited in this essay. The purpose of this essay is to identify important factors when categorizing and managing images for contributing to a better experience and a better user flow. The company Meriworks AB has given the authors the task of evaluating and investigating the interface for ImageVault, a digital library of images. A number of design principles have been created based on the theories that the essay contains. These design principles formed the basis for the heuristic evaluation that was done to give the authors an overview of the interface. To get a more user-centered perspective, 18 interviews with existing users of the interface were carried out. Based on the theories of the essay interview questions were designed. Based on the interviews personas and scenarios were created, to the result in a number of mockups showing future functionality and structure of the interface. The study has focused very much on evaluating an interface based on user perspective and how the structure is built in an interface that manages digital images. The authors aimed to determine how to meet the user's needs and goals and designing an interface that manages digital photos in a better way with the help of information architecture and user flow. During the study, a number of factors have been identified which are considered important for the categorization and management of images in digital photo libraries. These factors are the result, based on the theoretical framework of the essay and the data collection of the case study together with the mockups created. These factors may be the basis for developing interfaces that deal with digital imaging. Further research is needed to find out the validity of the factors, but also to examine whether these factors need to be supplemented further.

Full textThe aim of this study is to get a deeper understanding about user tests as well as answer the question about if testing for users is necessary at all times. I've done a comparison between what the literature says, and what a company says, about testing. The tests that's been in focus in this study is prototyping and card sorting tests. Prototyping aims to give the developer feedback about the design and check if there are any obvious problems with the design. A card sorting test can be used to get input about how information architecture should be constructed. Information architecture is how the links are related in a navigation system. The company doesn't think that testing is as important as the literature. The company doesn't usually test but for the current situation they did it since the interface is crucial for their clients business. The conclusion of this study is that testing is rather important. For a designer who hasn’t got that much experience, user testing can be a way to get feedback about his designs. A more experienced designer might not need to test as much but he should be aware of testing as a possible design tool.

Full textLegimus is an online library owned by the Myndigheten för tillgängliga medier. Myndigheten för tillgängliga medier provides people with dif-ferent circumstances the access to public literature and information. Legimus is a tool that enables people with reading difficulties to access literature. Legimus has a website where users can read the literature. As an important concept in the interaction between man and computer, the usability and user-friendliness of the website affects the visitor's ex-perience. Because of this, this work focuses on the user-friendliness of the Legimus website. The purpose of this work is to do a case study on what makes Legimus user-friendly and to focus on the selected target group to find out diffi-culties and what they expect from the use of the selected website. The chosen question is as follows: Has Legimus succeeded in attracting its priority target group of the students at Dalarna University with the web-site's design and user-friendliness. To carry out this work, a qualitative method has been chosen where stu-dents at Dalarna University are interviewed, after which the results are analysed with the help of four themes into which the interview ques-tions are divided. The results show that the respondents had different views on user-friendliness. Some respondents considered the website to be unclear at first, but over time learned to use the website. Most of the respondents considered the website to be simple and clear. The respondents were given the opportunity to express their own views regarding the website. There, most respondents had suggestions for improvements to the de-sign of the website. The conclusion drawn is not that the respondents found the website's design attractive. The respondents considered that they had used the website even if the design was worse given the need for Legimus webpage. Most of the users considered the website to be user-friendly, but to ensure my conclusion, the interview ended with the question of whether the respondents considered the website to be user-friendly. All the respondents considered it to be user-friendly, which strengthens my conclusion.

Full textThis study has looked into which information quality factors that affect the users’ experience in the context of e-commerce. The study is based on scientific articles and literature within the areas of information quality and e-commerce. There were also a separate data collection where six informants participated. These were asked to answer interview questions and carry out a user test on an existing e-commerce website. The tasks in the user test were presented in the form of scenarios were the informant had to carry out various actions that are common within e-commerce. The answers from the own data collection was then mapped to be able to identify which factors that affect the user's experience of information quality. These were then compared to the factors identified in previous studies. The result of the data collection in question shows that Trust, Informations architecture, Information and Usability are important information quality factors. A result that is in line with previous research.

Full textPurpose – The e-commerce is increasing and more consumers choose to shop with their phone. A study made by Episerver shows that 90 percent of all people surf on their phone but only 19 percent buy with their phone. The main reasons are technical problems, difficulties, limited access to information and registers that requires many steps. There is a high risk that a user will leave the website if they experience it complicated. There are general principles of design for websites to create good design and Google Analytics is used to analyse how a user navigates on the website. But the navigation does not describe why the user navigates in a certain way. Even though the general principles of design are being used users still experience websites complicated and decides to leave. To get a better understanding of the users experience of the website it is important to do a qualitative study. The purpose of this study is to investigate how a user experience the usability and design during a buying process on a mobile webshop within fashion. Method – In order to achieve the purpose of this study, a small-N study has been conducted on three webshops. A case study has also been conducted that included an observation and an interview with six participants. Findings – The study shows that all three reviewed webshops are designed responsive. Recognized icons, such as the burger menu, the cart and the magnifying glass for search function are used. Color contrasts and contrast in typography against background, hierarchy and whitespace. All webshops uses progressive disclosure to conceal information and compress content. Confirmations by emphasizing are used. Frustration and confusion appeared in the case study during several parts of the buying process. The frustrating parts are: unexpected events and pop-up boxes that interrupt the process, the missing alternative to filter products with patterns in the filtration function or chosen sizes of clothes in the filtration function that do not follow through the process. Buttons were difficult to press because of the size of it or its placement. The user also got confused on how to use the navigation when several of the categories were merged and when the same words had different meaning in different words were used in different webshops. The study also shows that the user experience that the search function was easy and effective to use. At last the user experienced the scroll positive if the website is not too long. Implications – The result of this study shows the importance of mapping the user’s perception of the website to be able to develop and offer a positive experience on the website during the buying process. The webshop therefore should focus on optimizing the interaction by following the User Interface Guidelines for applications and perform qualitative studies with the users to meet future needs as mobile usage increases. Limitations – The result of this study is limited to webshops in Sweden. The design and perception of the webshop can differ from other countries. If the mobile websites and the usability changes fast and with major changes, the lifetime of this study might be limited.
