This thesis is concerned with a project to apply the method of pressure modulation radiometry to measurements of the temperature and water vapour distributions in the atmosphere of Mars. The technique has already been used successfully to measure temperature (and occasionally composition) in the atmospheres of Earth and Venus. Two pressure modulators, containing carbon dioxide and water vapour respectively, are used in the Pressure Modulator Infrared Radiometer (PMIRR), on the payload of Mars Observer, scheduled for launch in September 1992. The composition of the Martian atmosphere is almost

The ultimate application of this work is constraining the optical properties of cirrus particles, which are poorly understood, by providing an automatic method, using all-sky cameras and an infrared radiometer, to identify the occurrence of the 22° halo formed by cirrus. This is done by interpreting all sky images in terms of a scattering phase function (SPF), from which the halo ratio (HR) is calculated, and by implementing a cirrus detection algorithm to associate HR measures to ice cloud occurrences. Cirrus reflectivity at solar wavelengths is inversely related to the HR which, being an ind

In situ measurements made of such objects are typically over a range of 100–3000 m and are influenced by the environment and by the instrument itself; the need therefore exists for measurement methods and data reduction techniques that incorporate corrections of these unwanted influences on the observed radiation. In this thesis work, temperature estimation algorithms based on physical and radiometric approaches are developed. Developed algorithms, firstly, tested on artificial images for different test cases. Following this, algorithms are tried out on real infrared images in order to verify that they are working properly. Finally, temperature estimations are done by including emissivity. Obtained results are compared to the temperature estimation results of a reference infrared camera. All the results and errors obtained during this study are presented and discussed.
