Abstract:
In the field of near-infrared weak light detection, an InP/InGaAs single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) is preferred due to the advantages of high sensitivity, low cost and room-temperature operation. To properly simulate and optimize the SPAD’s front-end circuit, a comprehensive and compact behavior model of the InP/InGaAs SPAD is normally required to accurately describe the statistical behavior of the detectors. In this paper, an InP/InGaAs SPAD analytical model is constructed, which not only includes the direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) behavior simulating the avalanche and quenching processes, but also describes the dark count, after-pulsing and photon detection efficiency. For dark count noise, three important generation mechanisms are considered, including thermal generation, trap-assisted tunneling and band-to-band tunneling. The model described by the Verilog-A hardware description language (HDL) can be directly implemented in the commercial circuit simulator. A gated mode, passive quenching and recharging circuit is used to simulate and verify the developed model. The simulation results are in good agreement with the reported test data, demonstrating the accuracy of the developed InP/InGaAs SPAD model.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study analyzes 76 commemorative speeches by South Korean presidents, focusing on Constitution Day, National Foundation Day, and Hangul Day. Among 28 Constitution Day speeches, key terms include “National Assembly, Republic of Korea,” “democracy, constitution,” and later, “unification, peace, autonomy.” Notable shifts occur, with “country's constitution” and “constitution establishment, constitution, North Korea” gaining prominence, followed by “democratic constitution,” “presidential election,” and “Republic of Korea.” National Foundation Day speeches (23 in total) highlight “Hongik Ingan, people, culture, history, authenticity,” transitioning to “unification, peace, North Korea, nation-building.” Early mentions of “North Korean Communist Group, national people, ethnic history, 60 million people” shift to focus on terms like “people, nation” later on. Hangul Day speeches (25 in total) feature evolving themes, from “scholar, culture, newspaper, national language, China” to emphasis on “King Sejong, cultural fi gure,” and eventually “culture, people, Hangul.” The 16th president's speeches uniquely emphasize “our language,” “King Sejong,” and “compatriots, Japanese colonial era Hangul, our language, Korean language.” The study extracts characteristic keywords using an algorithm, providing insights into presidential discourse on national holidays. However, interpreting their meaning solely based on data poses challenges. This research serves as a foundation, urging further studies for a clearer understanding of trends.

Abstract:
AbstractIn a usage-based framework, variation is part and parcel of our linguistic experiences, and therefore also of our mental representations of language. In this article, we bring attention to variation as a source of information. Instead of discarding variation as mere noise, we examine what it can reveal about the representation and use of linguistic knowledge. By means of metalinguistic judgment data, we demonstrate how to quantify and interpret four types of variation: variation across items, participants, time, and methods. The data concern familiarity ratings assigned by 91 native speakers of Dutch to 79 Dutch prepositional phrases such as in de tuin ‘in the garden’ and rond de ingang ‘around the entrance’. Participants performed the judgment task twice within a period of one to two weeks, using either a 7-point Likert scale or a Magnitude Estimation scale. We explicate the principles according to which the different types of variation can be considered information about mental representation, and we show how they can be used to test hypotheses regarding linguistic representations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Travelling is a central motive in A Veil of Footsteps (and in Breytenbach’s oeuvre). In this work, travelling is a metaphor for imagination. Breytenbach pleads for continual travelling because “the earth needs to be discovered and remembered again and again”. Breytenbach suggests that discovery and remembering require imagination. In the first part of this article the dependancy of imagination on language (the “footsteps” of the title) is investigated, using Paul Ricoeur’s concept of a “semantic imagination”. In the second part of the article three implications of imagination’s dependancy on language is identified in A Veil of Footsteps. Firstly the close tie between imagination and memory (the book is described as a memoir); secondly the importance of imagination for identity; and thirdly the need for imagination to enable an ethical response for one’s actions, are examined.

The skills and knowledge I acquired came from the tertiary institutes I had studied at, and the PLD I received as a classroom teacher. Both approaches were very Western, and this suited most but not all families. At the time when I was teaching, I had children in my class who were from different ethnic backgrounds, and for some English was not their first language. I was interested in looking at indigenous approaches to autism, approaches that are different from a Western approach. I enrolled in the postgrad Specialist Teaching Programme through Massey University, then I went on to do my Master’s degree, hoping to learn a little bit more about the indigenous approaches to autism in pre-colonial times. I was blessed to have Jill Bevan-Brown as my lecturer when I did my postgrad; she paved the way for what I’m doing in the space today. I was curious to learn about autism, first and foremost, and then later on in my career, I became interested in indigenous autism, particularly Māori autism.

Belozorovich, Anna. Altre Modernità, no. 26 (November 29, 2021): 145–64. http://dx.doi.org/10.54103/2035-7680/16802.

Abstract:

Thesis, University of Kalmar, School of Human Sciences, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hik:diva-894.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Särskrivningar anses allmänt öka i samhället.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines metaphors used in Swedish for the emotion grief. The definition of metaphor applied is the one of the conceptual metaphor, as presented by Lakoff & Johnson (1980), where metaphors are considered to be linguistic evidence of cognitive mappings and consist of a target and source domain. The aim of the study is to describe and map the different source domains, as well as to relate them to three basic level metaphors, that earlier research has shown to be of importance to emotional language; THE BODY AS MIND METAPHOR (Sweetser 1990), THE EVENT STRUCTURE METAPHOR (Lakoff & Johnson 1999 and Kövecses 2000) and THE FORCE METAPHOR (Kövecses 2000). Previous studies by Kövecses (2000) have treated the latter one as a dominating metaphor for more specific level emotion metaphors. The adopted methods consist of a text analysis and a corpus study, where metaphors are extracted from grief themed books and webpages and analyzed manually to later be sought up in corpora. The results show diversity in source domain and a total of 21 superordinate metaphors and 14 subordinate ones are observed. All three basic level metaphors feature. THE FORCE METAPHOR does however not qualify as a dominating metaphor which can function as a superordinate metaphor for all others. This is believed to be due to the fact that most earlier research has focused on English, as well as that the definition of grief used throughout the study does not constitute a prototypical emotion.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The Bottaccione Gorge at Gubbio, in central Italy, has been an important source of information about Cretaceous and Paleogene Earth history. At the much younger end of the historical continuum, it is also important for understanding the early history of Gubbio itself, for which the only written, although somewhat ambiguous, evidence comes from the Tavole eugubine, the unique bronze tablets which are a kind of Rosetta Stone for the Umbrian language. The role of the Bottaccione Gorge is debated in the history of Gubbio. The road through the gorge, crossing the Monti di Gubbio, is an important element for explaining the location of the city. One of the first settlements (late Bronze Age) is recognized from archaeological evidence at the top of a morphological fault scarp on the slope of Monte Ingino. In the Iron Age, the city described in the Tavole eugubine developed, in which Okri (fortress), Tota (city), and three sacred gates are mentioned. The locations of Okri, Tota, and the gates are still under study. According to the most likely hypothesis, Tota would have developed in the plain, on the right bank of the Torrente Camignano, while the initial settlement would have been transformed into Okri, to which the sacred gates would belong. Another gate may have been placed at the entrance to the Bottaccione Gorge. When the Eugubini (the people of Gubbio) built the new, post-Roman Gubbio in the twelfth century, they still identified, as the most suitable place for a fortified city, the location above the scarp on the slope of Monte Ingino, and they built two new gates at its lateral ends. The city was likely equipped with a third gate that faced the Bottaccione Gorge. In the thirteenth century, the Bottaccione Aqueduct was built to bring water to the highest point of Gubbio. Thus, two waterways—one natural (Torrente Camignano) and the other artificial—still branch off from Bottaccione to reach Gubbio at two different points that determine the lowest and highest levels of the city.

Abstract:
This chapter recovers a historical experience of how Soviet nationality policies and practices promoted and erased the memory of a dynamic, interwoven experience of community building, rebuilding, trauma, erasure, and activism among people in the hopes of creating a communist world. It traces the people on the local level who actively participated in bringing several communist events about. It also assesses today's post-Soviet world as a direct consequence of experiences and how they were processed. The chapter looks at the 1962 petition that asked Nikita Khrushchev why the greater community could not love the Georgian-Ingilo language and culture. It addresses the issue of who belonged in the Soviet republics, who belonged in the Soviet future, and who had the power to determine that belonging.

Abstract:
This chapter contemplates how the Fama y obras pósthumas honors Sor Juana’s enduring fame as Tenth Muse or exotic New World marvel. Sor Juana’s posthumous fame could be associated to her intellectual prowess if framed within the familiar discourse in which she is brokered as a New World “treasure,” a commodity caught up in the dynamics of male exchange. To make her intelligible to European readers, her Mexican panegyrists write her into the language of American abundance and debate whether her sexless soul, her manliness, or her otherworldliness was responsible for her surprising ingenio. Another transatlantic line of inquiry examines the role that the writer’s birth in Mexico plays in her European posthumous imaging as well as in her role as icon of New World culture.

Abstract:
This chapter sets the stage with the dramatic announcement by Hiroshi Mikitani, CEO of Rakuten, informing his 10,000 employees, of which over 7,100 are Japanese nationals, that from that day forward they would need to speak English in the workplace. In two years, they would be required to clear a proficiency test or risk demotion. This chapter introduces three employees who represent the categories that make up the core of the book. The first is Kenji, a Japanese engineer gripped by shock and fear that his years of hard work with the company will count for naught, who then receives the technical and emotional support to practice new English language skills. Next is Robert, a native English-speaking marketing manager from the United States, thrilled that the company is switching to his native language and who anticipates an easy career advance only to have his sense of privilege curtailed by new, daily work requirements, followed by a trip to Japan where his cultural blinders begin to loosen. Finally, there is the German IT technician, Inga, who is pleased by the announcement, who hopes it will streamline her work process—and learns that it does once she climbs the steep and often frustrating learning curve.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on the exegesis of some Petronian animals. As for the chained dog, the painted one (29.1) and the one in the flesh (64.7-9 and 72.7-9), we recognise both a dense network of epic references to the catabasis of Aeneas and ironic allusions to Seneca and to the popular tradition. Besides that, in our opinion, the epic language used to describe the fall of Ascyltus and Encolpius into the fishpond (72.7) emphasises the game between art and life which pervades the Cena. In the second part we defend the manuscript reading super capricornum locustam marinam (35.4).

Abstract:
Tutorial computer-assisted language learning tends to employ a deductive teaching approach, explicating grammatical concepts prior to practice exercises. This leads to a didactic gap, impacting learner engagement. Interactive Grammar Animations (InGA) aim to bridge this gap by enabling learners to explore the conceptual motivation and meaningfulness of grammar on their own. To harness the potential of InGAs, the selection of a suitable learning object and its didactic integration are pivotal. Only against the backdrop of media-adequate didactics, InGAs grant alternative access to the learning content and can become a means of insight and understanding. To bridge both the didactic and the knowledge gap, the research project on InGAs investigates the functionality of the interactive learning medium and its integration into a didactic concept. As a case study, the project uses grammar animations on the German passive voice whose visual interface is extended so that language learners can manipulate the content presented within them. Following a Design-Based Research (DBR) approach, the project is currently in its fourth cycle and this article reports on the challenges of developing and integrating an interactive learning application that adopts an inductive approach to grammar instruction in the foreign language classroom and reflects on didactic as well as methodological aspects.

Re-CHARGE - Voices about living with CHARGE syndrome. Nordic Welfare Centre, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.52746/dvez7239.

Full text
Abstract:
Given the right support, persons with CHARGE syndrome can overcome not only medical challenges but also various other obstacles, and lead fulfilling lives. This publication shows, through case studies and interviews, some daily lives, challenges, and achievements of persons living with CHARGE syndrome, emphasizing the importance of understanding and support from their community. Living with CHARGE syndrome can entail different aspects and challenges. Often, the focus revolves around the medical aspects, and less on how individuals can function in their day-to-day lives. There is a lack of case descriptions and interviews, telling the story from the perspective of the persons living with the syndrome themselves. In this publication you meet Thomas’s mother who gives a very personal account of how it was to learn that her newborn baby had CHARGE syndrome. Read about Dominic who is in primary school, knows three languages but also struggles with balance and sight, which makes him exhausted at the end of the day. Karl recently got his drivers’ licence and wants to move to the capital to get to know more people who knows sign language. Together with Charlie, Anna, Inga, and Linda they have all let us into their lives, displaying challenges, personal growth, and development. The aim of this publication is to show the diversity and give a voice to a group that seldom is heard. Hopefully, parents, legal guardians, and relatives can get a more positive picture of what life with CHARGE syndrome might look like.
