Abstract:
Contemporary architects highlight past ideas and present new manifestos often perceived as utopian. Bjarke Ingels introduced hedonistic sustainability in response to the demand for environmentally friendly and sustainable living through different perspectives. This paper comprehensively explains the concept of hedonistic sustainability through the designs of Bjarke Ingels, a contemporary architect. Literature from various sources is examined to describe Bjarke Ingels' idea. Hedonistic sustainability combines sustainable ideas, fun, and community. Bjarke Ingels's architectural design is applied through simulation and an ironic approach. Its representation facilitates the exploration of the design objects planned concretely. The idea of playful and communality was raised through the design that accommodates various user activities. Bjarke Ingels's idea is expected to contribute to the knowledge and contemporary architecture design process in Indonesia. © 2020 Nita Dwi Estika, Yudhistira Kusuma, Dewi Retno Prameswari, Iwan Sudradjat

Abstract:
The Mountain Dwellings project, located in the centre of the Ørestad district of southern Copenhagen, was built in 2008 by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). Together with BIG’s other housing projects nearby, namely the VM Houses and the 8 House, the building is a part of the urban development carried out under the ‘Ørestad act’, initiated by the Danish Parliament in the 1990s. This promoted the development of a new contemporary urban quarter of dwelling, studying, and working. With an attempt to reinforce the vibrant urban fabric of the district, various buildings of residential units and public spaces have been built, in addition to the improved green areas and rainwater canals.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Second language acquisition (SLA) research arose from the developments of the proposals made by Chomsky (1965) regarding the concept of The Language Acquisition Device (LAD), a language faculty that enables children to infer hypotheses about the rules of a certain language given that they are exposed to a considerable amount of linguistic input. Furthermore, Chomsky suggested that all languages are structured according to a set of universal principles; then, it is assumed that children have an innate knowledge of these universal principles which enables them to acquire the native language quickly, easily and efficiently. Added to these ideas, Chomsky’s mentalist theory of language acquisition contains the concept of linguistic competence, which consists in the mental representations of linguistic rules that constitute the speaker-hearer’s internal grammar, and linguistic performance, realized through the use of this grammar in the comprehension and production of language. Although Chomsky’s theory was developed within the field of the acquisition of the mother tongue (also known as L1), it had an effect on SLA theories since it showed that the acquisition of a given language could not be explained in terms of habits or imitation as the behaviorist view stated. When applying Chomsky’s proposals to the learning of a second language (L2), the differences between languages are not relevant issues to be considered in such process. Hymes (1971) extended the distinction of the concepts of linguistic competence and linguistic performance to include the communicative aspects of language, i.e. to cover linguistic and pragmatic knowledge. As a result, nowadays, SLA aims at the description and explanation of the learners’ linguistic or communicative competence by examining their performance.

Abstract:
Domestic violence against women is a serious social problem in Sweden, and sometimes leads to deadly consequences or other social consequences för the victims. Research shows that two of the social consequences of domestic violence against women are poverty and homelessness. This is due to the fact that most women who are victims of domestic violence usually also suffer economic abuse from their partners. Housing can be an issue för domestic violence victims because of their poor financial status among other reasons. The social services has the utmost responsibility to assist women who have been victims of domestic violence. The aim of this study was to investigate social workers understanding and experiences of how factors such as housing and poor financial status can delay the breakup process för women suffering domestic abuse from their partners, and if any challenges arise when working to meet these abused women's housing and financial needs. A qualitative method was used to collect data from five social workers through thematically semi-structured interviews. The results, which are presented in various themes, were analysed using theories such as street level byråcracy, organisation theory and power. The results shows that the social services usually meet the financial and immediate housing needs of these abused women but the long term housing solutions are usually a challenge, and this is mostly due to general housing shortages in Sweden. The results also highlights the importance of basic knowledge about domestic violence among social workers in particular and other human-serviceorganisations in general. Finally, the study brings to light some of the challenges that social workers encounter when working to meet domestic abused women's financial and housing needs, which are: limited knowledge about domestic violence and its consequences, limited resources, high workload and lack of concrete directives and guidelines from the government about how to suppor t and work with victims of domestic violence.

Abstract : The problem discussed in this study regards the analysis of the construction of Folias d'Arte's production of Otelo in relation to the cultural and political scenario that involved the Iraq war, more specifically concerning the depiction of the character Iago in selected scenes of the production. Folias' Otelo, which premiered in 2003 in São Paulo, was directed by Marco Antonio Rodrigues and had the text translated by Maria Sílvia Betti. The scene analysis concentrated mainly on the study of Folias' portrayal of Iago's intellectual tactics in relation to George W. Bush's administration's political games to invade Iraq in 2003. Such event caused a feeling of unfairness around the world concerning the real motives and strategies that Bush's administration deployed to go to war. I have relied on Edward Rocklin's notions of conception, enactment, and critical reception to structure this study. Also, I have counted on Alan Dessen's concepts regarding the subject of text alteration, and Dennis Kennedy's comments concerning the significance of the visual in theatrical productions. As for the discussion on parameters to investigate the performance of actors, and the translation of dramatic texts, I have brought to this investigation Patrice Pavis' thoughts on such subjects. The present thesis demonstrates that Folias' Otelo offers, in different stages of its construction, elements that propose a critical view on the cultural and political scenario related to the Iraq war. Additionally, the connection between Iago's intellectual tactics and Bush's administration's schemes to invade Iraq can be vastly observed in the analysis of scenes.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Ingress of hot gas through the rim seals of gas turbines can be modelled theoretically using the so-called orifice equations. In Part 1 (ASME GT 2009-59121) of this two-part paper, the orifice equations were derived for compressible and incompressible swirling flow, and the incompressible equations were solved for axisymmetric rotationally-induced (RI) ingress. In Part 2, the incompressible equations are solved for non-axisymmetric externally-induced (EI) ingress and for combined EI and RI ingress. The solutions show how the nondimensional ingress and egress flow rates vary with Θ0, the ratio of the flow rate of sealing air to the flow rate necessary to prevent ingress. For EI ingress, a ‘saw-tooth model’ is used for the circumferential variation of pressure in the external annulus, and it is shown that ε, the sealing effectiveness, depends principally on Θ0; the theoretical variation of ε with Θ0 is similar to that found in Part 1 for RI ingress. For combined ingress, the solution of the orifice equations shows the transition from RI to EI ingress as the amplitude of the circumferential variation of pressure increases. The predicted values of ε for EI ingress are in good agreement with available experimental data, but there are insufficient published data to validate the theory for combined ingress.

Abstract:
The mainstream flow past the stationary nozzle guide vanes and rotating turbine blades in a gas turbine creates an unsteady non-axisymmetric variation of pressure in the annulus radially outward of the rim seal. Ingress and egress occur through those parts of the seal clearance where the external pressure is higher and lower, respectively, than that in the wheel-space; this non-axisymmetric type of ingestion is referred to here as externally-induced (EI) ingress. Another cause of ingress is that the rotating air inside the wheel-space creates a radial gradient of pressure so that the pressure inside the wheel-space can be less than that outside; this creates rotationally-induced (RI) ingress, which — unlike EI ingress — can occur even if the flow in the annulus is axisymmetric. Although EI ingress is usually dominant in a turbine, there are conditions under which both EI and RI ingress are significant: these cases are referred to as combined ingress. In Part 1 of this two-part paper, the so-called orifice equations are derived for compressible and incompressible swirling flow, and the incompressible equations are solved analytically for RI ingress. The resulting algebraic expressions show how the nondimensional ingress and egress vary with Θ0, the ratio of the flow rate of sealing air to the flow rate necessary to prevent ingress. It is shown that ε, the sealing effectiveness, depends principally on Θ0, and the predicted values of ε are in mainly good agreement with available experimental data. Part 2 (ASME GT2009-59122) concentrates on the solution and validation of the orifice equations for EI and combined ingress.

Abstract:
Part 1 of this two-part paper presented experimental results for externally-induced (EI) ingress, where the ingestion of hot gas through the rim seal into the wheel-space of a gas turbine is controlled by the circumferential variation of pressure in the external annulus. In Part 2, experimental results are presented for rotationally-induced (RI) ingress, where the ingestion is controlled by the pressure generated by the rotating fluid in the wheel-space. Although EI ingress is the common form of ingestion through turbine rim seals, RI ingress or combined ingress (where EI and RI ingress are both significant) is particularly important for double seals, where the pressure asymmetries are attenuated in the annular space between the inner and outer seals. In this paper, the sealing effectiveness was determined from concentration measurements, and the variation of effectiveness with sealing flow rate was compared with theoretical curves for RI ingress obtained from an orifice model. Using a nondimensional sealing parameter, Φ0, the data could be collapsed onto a single curve, and the theoretical variation of effectiveness with Φ0 was in very good agreement with the data for a wide range of flow rates and rotational speeds. It was shown that the sealing flow required to prevent RI ingress was much less than that needed for EI ingress, and it was also shown that the effectiveness of a radial-clearance seal is significantly better than that for an axial-clearance seal for both EI and RI ingress.

Sikik, Ugur Emre. "Simulations of Air and Water Ingress Transients for the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) by Means of the TINTE Code." In Fourth International Topical Meeting on High Temperature Reactor Technology. ASMEDC, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/htr2008-58104.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study several air and water ingress scenarios for the PBMR [1] were simulated by means of the dynamic reactor code TINTE (TIme-dependent Neutronics and TEmperatures) [2]. The Power Conversion Unit (PCU) and other sub-systems cannot be modelled with the TINTE code and therefore air ingress rates were obtained from Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis performed by utilizing the FLUENT code [3]. The use of the TINTE code was previously validated with simulations of the NACOK corrosion experiments [4], [5], [6]. The validations were performed at Forschungszentrum Juelich, however the results are not yet published. The rates of chemical reactions between graphite and gases like O2, CO2, H2O and H2 are negligible below 400°C. Air and water ingress into the PBMR core at high temperatures can result in corrosion of the PBMR fuel spheres and a possible increase in the fission product release rate. The air ingress scenarios included in this study are; a break in the core outlet pipe at the turbine inlet location, which results in air ingress from the outlet plenum, and a break in a pipe that is connected to the top of the Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV), which results in air ingress from top of the core. For both transients it is assumed that a Depressurized Loss of Forced Cooling (DLOFC) event takes place prior to the air ingress. The DLOFC leads to high fuel and reflector temperatures that allow higher oxidation rates. The results show that the oxidation of graphite structures in the core is more severe in the case of the outlet pipe break transient. A break in the Core Conditioning System (CCS) heat exchanger circuit during a maintenance mode or following a reactor trip could result in water ingress of up to 1000 kg into the core (the primary system is depressurized at this stage). During the water ingress the CCS continuously cools down the core. Due to the low water ingress rate and lower fuel temperatures, the water ingress transient is not as severe as the air ingress transients.

Abstract:
Rotationally-induced (RI) ingress is caused by the negative pressure (relative to the external air) inside the wheel-space of a gas turbine; this negative pressure, which is created by the rotating flow in the wheel-space, drives the ingestion of hot gas through the rim seals. Externally-induced (EI) ingress is caused by the circumferential distribution of pressure created by the blades and vanes in the turbine annulus: ingress occurs in those regions where the external pressure is higher than that in the wheel-space, and egress occurs where it is lower. Although EI ingress is the dominant mechanism for hotgas ingestion in engines, there are some conditions in which RI ingress has an influence: this is referred to as combined ingress (CI). In Part 1 of this two-part paper, values of the sealing effectiveness (obtained using the incompressible orifice equations developed for EI ingress in an earlier paper) are compared with published experimental data and with results obtained using 3D steady compressible CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). Acceptable limits of the incompressible-flow assumption are quantified for the orifice model; for the CFD, even though the Mach number in the annulus reaches approximately 0.65, it is shown that the incompressible orifice equations are still valid. The results confirm that EI ingress is caused predominantly by the magnitude of the peak-to-trough circumferential difference of pressure in the annulus; the shape of the pressure distribution is of secondary importance for the prediction of ingress. A simple equation, derived from the orifice model, provides a very good correlation of the computed values of effectiveness. Using this correlation, it is possible to estimate the minimum sealing flow rate to prevent ingress without the need to know anything about the pressure distribution in the annulus; this makes the orifice model a powerful tool for rim-seal design.
