Abstract:
The article deals with the episodes in the three-century confrontation between the account-debt institutional and the commodity theory of money. The former is rarely discussed; and the ideas of G. Ingham can be considered as a such modern episode. The commodity theory of money continues to dominate in university textbooks. The article analyzes the fate of two books by J. M. Keynes and J. Schumpeter as an example. It shows the connection of the two theories of money with two opposite methodological approaches, namely, a priori-abstract, based on assumptions, and historical-experimental, based o

The library examined students’ high school GPAs and aptitude test scores but were unable to account for the increase through any difference in precollegiate achievement.

Abstract:
The principal objective of this study was to investigate the predictive power of thinking styles for hardiness—a healthy personality disposition. Four hundred (146 males and 254 females) students from a large, comprehensive university in Shanghai, the People’s Republic of China, responded to the Thinking Styles Inventory-Revised II (Sternberg, Wagner, & Zhang, 2007) and the hardiness scale (Bartone, Ursano, Wright, & Ingraham, 1989). Results showed that after students’ age and gender were controlled for, creativity-generating styles (also known as Type I styles) and a style that allows

In connection with the Eugene O'Neill centenary in 1988 Ingmar Bergman directed Long Day's Journey into Night at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, where this play (like A Touch of the Poet and Hughie), also had its world premiere. While the director of the 1956 production, Bengt Ekerot, settled for a realistic approach. Bergman's pruned version, widely acclaimed both inside and outside Sweden, is existentially stylized. Here Egil Türnqvist discusses especially the visual aspects of the production, partly on the basis of information from the scenographer, Gunilla Palmstierna-Weiss. Egil

The four studies published below were originally presented as papers at the conference Philosophie, Theologie und Wissenschaft im 14. Jahrhundert. Johannes Buridan und seine Schule that took place at the Silesian University in Katowice between 12–17 September, 2004. These articles belong to a long process of exploring late medieval philosophy, particularly focused on so called via moderna. They pertain mainly to 14th and 15th century Buridanism, and above all to one of the most eminent representative of this current, i.e. Marsilius of Inghen.

Taking advantage of the 1.5 μm lidar, a series of 1.5 μm micro-pulse lidars have been developed at the University of Science and Technology of China, in Hefei, China. According to the different characteristics of three kinds of single-photon detectors at 1.5 μm, namely superconducting nanowire single-photon detector, up-conversion SPDs and InGaAs/InP single-photon avalanche diodes, different kinds of lidar systems have been constructed to realize the detection of atmospheric visibility, cloud, depolarization, wind field at the atmospheric boundary layer.

One recent approach to the study of public policy has been policy design. And one component of this is the concept of target populations. Perhaps the strongest case for the importance of target populations as a focus for research has been advanced in the work of Anne Schneider and Helen Ingram. They have argued that target populations help to shape the construction of public policies. If target populations are politically weak and have negative constructions (for instance, drug users and drug dealers), then policies will tend to be harsh and punitive—penalties rather than benefits. Abstract Present article describes a 3D gonioreflectometer developed at Aalto University for the measurement of spectral bidirectional reflectance distribution function (sBRDF) of horizontally aligned samples, needed to study sBRDF of sand from satellite calibration test sites. The new set-up incorporates three motorized arms that allow to measure in- and out-of-plane sBRDF. Illumination of the sample is provided by a supercontinuum laser coupled with laser line tunable filters and detection is performed with two types of photodiodes (Si and InGaAs) enabling collection of sBRDF in the spectral

AbstractThis article considers how lecturing in Victoria Park in the East End of London allowed three early heads of the university settlement Oxford House to engage local communities in a discussion about the place of religion in the modern world. It demonstrates how park lecturing enabled James Adderley, Hebert Hensley Henson, and Arthur Winnington-Ingram, all of whom also held positions in the Church of England, to perform and test out their religious identities. Open-air lecturing was a performance of religious faith for these settlement leaders. It allowed them to move beyond the institut

University researchers have recently quantified the value of carbon sequestration provided by landscape trees (Ingram, 2012, 2013). However, no study to date has captured the economic costs of component horticultural systems while conducting a life cycle assessment of any green industry product. This study attempts to fill that void. The nursery production system modeled in this study was a field-grown, 5-cm (2-in) caliper Cercis canadensis ‘Forest Pansy’ in the Lower Midwest. Partial budgeting modeling procedures were also used to measure the sensitivity of related costs and potential benefit
