Full textEthnology of the adventure. Contemporary practices of male mobility and identity buildings in West Africa (Burkina Faso) – This PhD thesis features an ethnology of migratory phenomena in West Africa which promotes a study of the mobility locally called “adventure” as an anthropology of the uncertainty. The initial purpose was to grasp labile and roaming identities of migrants who refer to themselves as adventurers – identity branched to specific practices, desires and conceptions of the Elsewhere. In approaching as closely as possible the meaning of the speeches of the actors and the witnesses, in analyzing thick biographies of adventurers in order to reproduce the subjective dimension of their migratory experience, and in observing in vivo the social contexts and the crucibles of meanings where the desires of extroversion arise, we give to see and understand the adventurers’ uses of the Here and the Elsewhere, as well as their relationships to themselves, to others and to the world they generate. Contrary to the cliché painting migrations in the most miserable way, thus we unveil a philosophy of the mobility that makes us inclined to think the adventurer as a subject-author of his existence and the adventurism as an éthos and a ritual form of self-aestheticization, self-narrative, self-conquest and self-exposure

Full textThis thesis examines the transformations experienced by the Vodun religion in the last decade, taking as a starting point the analysis of a singular phenomenon: the inclusion of Westerns in Beninese circuits of religious practice. Examining the initiatory paths of Europeans in Benin, the study addresses broader questions on the reproduction and change of a religious system. While identifying a peculiar dynamic of reproduction of such cults and drawing the major features and configurations of contemporary Vodun, the thesis questions how the religious experience is constructed, both individually and collectively. Describing spiritual journeys of Westerns who initiate themselves to the cults, this work shows how new cultural products and innovative subjectivities are fabricated in encounters of “foreigners” with Vodun worlds. The case of Westerns initiation rituals questions directly the “globalization of religious experience” and how new cultural identity are formed in such contexts

Full textBased on analysis of colonial and ethnographic studies, I tried to understand in this thesis how established the classifications of African populations from racial presumptions and reifying identifications in a region of western Africa where the "mixture of races" had struck the first observers. As these synchronous representations stood out, the conquest and the colonial administration forced changes to the productivity and to the existing power, transforming the people’s collective lives and their spiritual and religious worlds. A ground study in and around Sara's village, located in the loop of Mouhoun, completes the study of the colonial papers and highlights the existence of ethnic lineages in forming social and political structure, making distinctions between the Bwaba and the "foreigners", what seems to be at the origin of a feeling ofmembership of a geographically undefined human group, in Bwamu "Bwabawa.» This study also confirms the existence of transformations which appeared during and after colonization

Full textThe ethno-sociology of modern african religious movements (messianic prophetism and syncretist cult) leads to recognize the complementary character of the prophetic figure and the ressources of syncretic work. The religious and therapeutic field of gabon, in particular the bwiti fang, represents a privileged area for the analysis of the legitimation strategies adopted by visionary prophets in their competitive fight relatively to while power and traditional powers (initiates, diviners, witch doctors, sorcerers). The metamorphoses undergone by the main schemes of the traditional cultural matrix (genealogy and initiation, sacrificial debt and witchcraft) as they appropriate the figures of christian dramaturgy, the recomposition of the alternative ways of vision and possession, linked with the displacement of stakes in initiation, the search for forms of communal life as a solution to the deadlock resulting from the process of individualisation, all these elements enable us to throw light on the syncretic logic of "bricolage" by means of which the charismatic leaders dealing in salvation commodities meet the new demands of the religious market

Full textThis thesis is a study of the narrative and iconographic representations of physically handicapped children and teenagers in contemporary fiction for children and young adults. The corpus under study includes picture books, comic books, novels and plays. We propose an ethnocritical approach to these texts, based on both a poetics of the literary text and an anthropological approach to the symbolic. The first part of the thesis focuses on the process of initiation of the character. We show how the handicapped child or adolescent constructs his/her identity within the framework of child or adolescent cosmologies which are to some extent recreated or reshaped by the narrative (or iconographic) destiny of the character. Particular attention will be paid to the role of games, art, deep literacy, and imagination. The second part examines the cultural and symbolic representations surrounding the body of the handicapped person. From this point of view, two opposite (but sometimes complementary) attitudes appear: the first one focuses on the over-visibility (and sometimes even on the abnormality/anomaly) represented by the handicapped body and the other, inversely, on its erasure or euphemisation, and thus on its more or less sublimated liminal status. We will attempt to demonstrate how the relationship between text and image often leads to a dialogue between these two attitudes. What is at stake from an ethical and educational point of view in a literary “stylization” of physical handicaps and in the forms of symbolic return to a wild state involved in contemporary representations? And what strategies for overcoming or transcending physical handicaps are offered by activities involving play, dreaming or critical distance? Is it possible to detect a new attitude, a new art?
