Abstract:
As adaptive systems, kinship and its accompanying rules have co-evolved with elements of complex societies, including wealth inheritance, subsistence, and power relations. Here we consider an aspect of kinship evolution in the Austronesian dispersal that began from about 5500 BP in Taiwan, reaching Melanesia about 3200 BP, and dispersing into Micronesia by 1500 BP. Previous, foundational work has used phylogenetic comparative methods and ethnolinguistic information to infer matrilocal residence in proto-Austronesian societies. Here we apply Bayesian phylogenetic analyses to a data set on Austronesian societies that combines existing data on marital residence systems with a new set of ethnographic data, introduced here, on initiation rites. Transition likelihoods between cultural-trait combinations were modeled on an ensemble of 1000 possible Austronesian language trees, using Reversible Jump Markov Chain Monte Carlo (RJ-MCMC) simulations. Compared against a baseline phylogenetic model of independent evolution, a phylogenetic model of correlated evolution between female and male initiation rites is substantially more likely (log Bayes factor: 17.9). This indicates, over the generations of Austronesian dispersal, initiation rites were culturally stable when both female and male rites were in the same state (both present or both absent), yet relatively unstable for female-only rites. The results indicate correlated phylogeographic evolution of cultural initiation rites in the prehistoric dispersal of Austronesian societies across the Pacific. Once acquired, male initiation rites were more resilient than female-only rites among Austronesian societies.

Abstract:
Societies that thrive are those that have mechanisms for enhancing moral values amongst their growing generations in a sustainable way. This study singled out traditional initiation rites as a mechanism used by the Bukusu people of Kenya to cultivate morality among the youth, with an intention of raising men that are morally upright, and who are able to provide leadership in a similar way. It was envisaged that observance of the lessons and principles given through the initiation process would be effective in sustaining morality and virtuousness in the community. This was an ethnographic study, where 20 participants were interviewed. They were accessed using snowball technique. This study operated with four objectives: (i) to find out how the process of initiation of boys into adulthood was fashioned to inculcate moral lessons; (ii) to explore how the nurture given during initiation process had been helpful in enhancing moral values among the ‘graduates’ of traditional initiation; (iii) to probe areas, if any, where traditional initiation rites resulted in immoral behaviour and why; and (iv) to explore whether the rites had been revised in light of available information in medicine, education, and religion. The study found that while traditional Bukusu initiation rites were designed to raise men that were morally upright and virtuous, and while the traditional process of initiation has been widely successful in the past, unfortunately, this study found that due to lapses in control mechanism of the process, traditional Bukusu rites have sometimes failed to produce ‘graduates’ that were morally upright and virtuous. This study concludes that, while the initiation process remains an important stage for inculcating good morals among the youth, checks and controls should be applied on the system, the process and the mentors, to make sure the purpose of the rites of initiation into adulthood are achieved. The study recommends that the checks and controls should be guided by available information in medicine, education and religion.

Van, Eden Karen. "Rites of passage as the basis of programme development for young people at risk in South Africa." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/16099.

Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 202-207.
In traditional indigenous communities, rites of passage provide a binding and supportive function which facilitates the transition of young people from childhood to adulthood. However, in contemporary western society transition rites have largely been forgotten or neglected and this loss has resulted in a hunger for initiation which adolescents often attempt to satisfy by using means which are socially unacceptable. This study attempts to understand the mechanisms which lead adolescents into socially unacceptable behaviour by exploring the potential for using the notion of de-labelling as the basis of intercepting and transforming juvenile deviance. As such, rites of passage are explored from the perspectives of a range of social scientific theories in order to assess the value in these processes tor young people at risk in South Africa. The central findings of this study suggest that it is possible to reinstate rites of passage in the form of a de-labelling programme, but that there is a need to go beyond an isolated programme by providing more systemic containment of young people in the form of community support and mentoring.

Ntombana, Luvuyo. "An investigation into the role of Xhosa male initiation in moral regeneration." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1006265.

Full text
Abstract:
This research study in Mdantsane (East London), Whittlesea (Hewu), Njiveni (Libode) and Cala sought to investigate the role of the amaXhosa male initiation in moral regeneration focusing on socio-cultural, educational and religious aspects related to moral values. The role of the amaXhosa male initiation as a rite of passage from boyhood to manhood, how it was viewed in the past, its impact upon the initiates and its contribution to the moral upholding of values were investigated. It was further intended to establish whether westernisation and urbanisation brought a shift of meaning and emphasis to the current initiation practice and, if so, to what extent has the ceremony departed from traditional norms and what challenges the ceremony has to face at present. A qualitative research method involving an ethnographic study was utilised, which includes in-depth, semi-structured interviews (formal interviews and informal discussions) and participant observation. Research findings suggested that in the past the amaXhosa male initiation played a role in the instruction of moral values. However, this study identified a shift of meaning in the practice which has been more evident in urban than in rural areas. The shift suggested that the instruction role has changed in prominence and there is less emphasis on teaching and appropriate adult behaviour. Moreover that the amakhankatha, who had the major role in teaching of the initiates are now participating in making the role less effective and sometimes introducing influences that are destructive to the initiates. Such negative influences include abuse of alcohol and drugs, promiscuity among the youth and disobedience of elders. It is argued that revisiting the teachings surrounding male initiation may cultivate productive debates on how young males are taught morality in today's society. Furthermore, that if the Xhosa male initiation could be contextualised it can play a role in the instruction of boys as they graduate to manhood and that can contribute to moral regeneration in South Africa.

Full text
Abstract:
The dupas from the north cameroon bring us into identity realization through their initiation with circumcision. Their cultural difference is a pretext for the definition of an intercultural frame with plural references. The initiation is defined according to previous studies and observation of the dupas. Here, as a living and social being, the subject acts before, during and hereafter the different steps of life : when coming into the world, living, eating, excreting, dying, dancing and speaking with a language involving the other one, the dupa is really marked by castration. The identity with the body and the partakings of the objects in the rite is made in a complex field, the psychological approach of which, first, - with its psychoanalytical foundations - and the anthropological approach, second, are distinct but however structurally intricate. These structural articulations are confirmed by a lexical and contextual analysis compared with factual data taking each subject one after another : external objects and own body are the bases of the initiatory, identity process in intermediary spaces with temporal, spatial and significant - meaningful - connections. A structural approach congruent with this identity complex is combined with the recognition of cultural particularities to be found in the vacobulary and ethnography, volume ii. This research in fundamental psychopathology implies the combination of disciplines and the priority given to the works done by the local people. Thus, it opens the prospect of a so-called public or commun health, the centre of which is the subject

Abstract:
In this work, a case of loss of heat removal, caused by a loss of electrical supply, is analyzed for Atucha II PHWR. This reactor is similar to a PWR reactor in many aspects, but differs because it has, inside the pressure vessel, vertical coolant channels inside a moderator tank, which is at primary system pressure but a lower temperature. During the studied event, moderator temperature rises, heated by primary system (acting as a heat sink), until the temperatures are equalized. Given that primary and moderator systems are interconnected, the expansion of the moderator produces a rise in the level in pressurizer. The main aspects of the plant dynamic in the presented case are shown and analyzed. The normal strategy of the plant to cope with this initiating event is also discussed: the systems involved, operational modes and trigger signals are described. Then, three possible sequences are studied: heat removal by steam generators or moderator heat exchangers, and black out (no heat removal). The safety functions required to cope with this initiating event are also determined, as long as the associated safety and auxiliary systems. Representative variables of selected sequences are shown, in order to go further in understanding of the plant behavior. The different final stages are identified. The minimum capability of each system, necessary to achieve a plant safe condition, is also established. It was found that in this particular event, their requirements are less than the ones specified in the design basis. Also the influence of moderator system thermal inertia on transients is determined as a distinctive characteristics of this reactor.

Abstract:
The article consists of three sections - two descriptive and one prescriptive. The first one proposes an analysis of the crisis phenomena in the settlement system: from its imbalance and delegation of the functions of strategizing spatial development from the state to development, to the absence in the Gradcodex of a provision on the development of the General Scheme of settlement and monopolization, the absorption of SMEs in the field of development. The second includes a list of the consequences of maintaining the status quo in the field of resettlement: from desertification of the country's territories and depopulation, spurred on by the migration of the population to the largest cities, to a further increase in the number of storeys and building density with the miniaturization of apartments in high-rises and the continuation of the policy of deindustrialization of the country. The third section formulates proposals aimed at changing the country's spatial development strategy, among them - the development of a General Settlement Scheme in the field of low-rise housing in accordance with the principles formulated by the Initiative Group, and a Strategy for the placement and development of productive forces, aimed at dispersed placement of production capacities, inventory of low-rise construction technologies, development of organizational and financial mechanisms to support low-rise construction based on accumulated regional experience, reorientation of transport infrastructure construction from a limited number of agglomerations towards the development of projects aimed at linking the country's space, legislative limitation of monopolization processes in the field of development and construction, creation Committee for Architecture and Urban Planning under the President of the Russian Federation, whose tasks would include, first of all, the strategizing of spatial development, etc.

Abstract:
Almost one fifth of children under five in El Salvador are anemic because their diets contain too little iron. In rural areas, that number rises to 25 percent; the disorder extends across Central America. Iron is essential for bodies and minds to develop and resist infections and diseases. Giving children micronutrients such as iron, vitamins and zinc is one of the most efficient and cost- effective ways of improving their health. Educating families about good nutrition is key.A pharmaceutical company in El Salvador is retrofitting its plant with a $1.1 million loan from the Inter- American Development Bank's Opportunities for the Majority Initiative (OMJ) to become the first local producer of powdered micronutrients. Supervised by the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), Establecimientos Ancalmo S.A. de C.V. will insure a reliable, affordable supply of supplements and reach more children in the Central America.
