Abstract:

Abstract Am Beispiel volkssprachiger Blockbücher und Inkunabeln untersucht der Beitrag die Auswirkungen unterschiedlicher Druckverfahren auf die Zeichensetzung und andere Mittel der Textsegmentierung (z. B. Majuskel, Alinea, Spatium, Einrückung). Bei Blockbüchern handelt es sich um seitenverkehrt in Holztafeln geschnittene und dann im Reibe- oder Pressverfahren vervielfältigte Texte. Als Inkunabeln bezeichnet man die frühesten, mit beweglichen Lettern hergestellten Drucke bis einschließlich 1500. Blockbücher und Inkunabeln existierten ein halbes Jahrhundert mit- und nebeneinander; die unterschiedlichen technischen Anforderungen verlangten aber einen anderen Umgang mit der Textvorlage. Während der Letterndruck den Bedingungen des typographischen Satzes unterlag (z. B. einheitlicher Zeilenfall), punktuell aber die Möglichkeit der Nachbesserung bot, erlaubte der Holztafeldruck eine in vielerlei Hinsicht freiere Textgestaltung, die angesichts der Endgültigkeit des geschnittenen Texts eine sorgfältigere Planung voraussetzte. Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass der Blockdruck den individuellen Charakter von Texten stärker berücksichtigte und dabei den Einsatz textsegmentierender Mittel beförderte. Der Letterndruck war hingegen deutlich von Bestrebungen zu Vereinheitlichung und Ökonomie geprägt.

Abstract:

Autor przedstawia dzieje Austriackiej Biblioteki Narodowej (ABN; Österreichische Nationalbibliothek), której zasoby sięgają XIV w. Następnie omawia genezę, metodologię i zawartość serii założonej przez Franza Wickhoffa, wydawanej od 1905 r. pt. Beschreibendes Verzeichnis der illuminierten Handschriften in Österreich, stanowiącej opisowy wykaz rękopisów iluminowanych w Austrii. W przypadku katalogowania rękopisów dawnej biblioteki dworskiej (Hofbibliothek), a od 1920 r. ABN, przełomem stało się zainicjowanie przez Juliusa Schlossera i Hermanna Juliusa Hermanna podserii: Die Illuminierten Handschriften und Inkunabeln der Nationalbibliothek in Wien. W latach 1923-1938 wydano 15 tomów tej podserii z opisami ponad 1500 manuskryptów. Po II wojnie światowej prace te kontynuował Franz Unterkircher publikując w 1957 i 1959 r. dwa tomy inwentarza obejmującego wszystkie (ponad 5000 jednostek) rękopisy iluminowane ABN oraz Otton Pächt, który zainicjował nową serię wydawniczą pt. Die Illuminierten Handschriften und Inkunabeln der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek, wydawaną od 1974 r. Jego następca Gerhard Schmidt zainicjował projekt pt. „Szkoły środkowoeuropejskie” – Mitteleuropäische Schulen (MeSch). Jego celem jest skatalogowanie środkowoeuropejskich rękopisów iluminowanych.

Bevor die Frage nach den Formen des Wissenstransfers von lateinischen zu deutschsprachigen Diskursen des Spätmittelalters zureichend beantwortet werden kann, sollte im Vorfeld untersucht werden, welche Texte der lateinischen wissensvermittelnden Literatur des Mittelalters überhaupt ins Deutsche übersetzt werden; es sollte dabei erkennbar werden, nach welchen Kriterien eine solche Selektion aus dem mittelalterlichen gelehrten Wissen für einen laikalen Rezipientenkreis erfolgt. Im Folgenden wird nach einer ersten Übersicht über die Textproduktion im Bereich der deutschsprachigen Wissensliteratur, der Frageansatz aus methodischen Gründen auf die Inkunabelproduktion konzentriert. Die Auswertung zeigt, daß unter den 207 deutschsprachigen Inkunabeln mit wissensvermittelnder Literatur die astrologisch-prognostischen Texte weit mehr als die Hälfte ausmachen; damit sowie mit den Drucken medizinischen Inhalts überwiegen die Texte, die Wissen des gelehrt-lateinischen Diskurses für einen alltagspraktischen Gebrauch adaptieren und aufbereiten.

Abstract:

Wenn man von einer wissenschaftlich betreuten Ausstellung zurückkehrt, oder wenn man es gar nicht schafft, diese Ausstellung persönlich zu besichtigen, freut man sich besonders, den begleitenden Katalog in den Händen zu halten. Diese Kataloge haben sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten zu beachtlichen wissenschaftlichen Werken gemausert, was z.T. auch auf den vorliegenden zutrifft. Die 2012 verstaatlichte Staats- und Stadtbibliothek Augsburg feiert 2017 ihr 480-jähriges Bestehen, was eine etwas ungewöhnliche Zahl darstellt. Aber die hier im Katalog vorgestellten Exponate, illustrierten Handschriften, also Cimelien, besitzen genau den gleichen Charakter, denn viele davon, sowohl europäischer als auch außereuropäischer Provenienz, sind bis heute nur relativ wenig oder gar nicht von der Forschung beachtet worden. Darunter befinden sich sowohl Handschriften als auch Inkunabeln und Frühdrucke, die sowohl die deutsche als auch die europäische, sowohl die indische als auch die japanische Buchkunst prächtig in Ausschnitten repräsentieren.

The aim of the article was to examine how the fund of these incunabula was compiled and the amount of this fund was changing, what factors influenced changes of this fund, and what is the significance of these incunabula for Lithuanian culture. At the same time it was an attempt using incunabula to show at least passingly how Lithuania looked in European political, cultural and ideological context of that time, what events or processes influenced collection accession, who and by what ties related it to other countries. Lithuania was not a desert island on an European map, withdrawn from prevalent political cultural and ideological changes, neither it was a total barren, accepting no progress or novelties. It was inquired by what ways the incunabula emerged in our country, what was the demand and what impact they made, who and why acquired them, and what marks their activity had left so that we could judge by them about their circulation in Lithuanian cultural life and contemplate what still undiscovered treasures may be hidden in them waiting for researchers attention.

Če se ozremo nazaj, smo namreč v pozdravnih govorih zelo pogosto razmišljali o preteklosti. Zatorej mi, cenjeni kolegi, oprostite, da vas born popeljal se dlje v preteklost in vam razkril majhne ter odločilne korenine, iz katerih se je pred 2500 leti iz helenskih tal, rodne grude vseh znanosti, dvignilo kvišku zdaj tako ponosno razvito in močno razvejano drevo filologije. Ta tema se mi zdi danes toliko primernejša, ker so, začuda, inkunabule naše znanosti doslej pritegnile tako malo pozomosti filologov. Biblioteka Uniwersytecka w Poznaniu w 2017 roku nabyła wydanie dzieła Wilhelma Duranta Rationale divinorum officiorum (Nürnberg: Antonius Koberger, 19 IV 1480, 2o). Na wyklejce przedniej okładki tego inkunabułu znajduje się spis ksiąg z 1553 roku. W artykule przedstawiono losy tego woluminu (dotąd uchodził za stratę wojenną) oraz dokonano analizy spisu ksiąg. Wynika z niej, że właścicielem księgozbioru ujętego w rejestrze był Stanisław Smoła z Wolborza (pierwsza połowa XVI wieku), bakałarz sztuk i rektor szkoły przy kościele św. Szczepana w Krakowie. Do tekstu artykułu dołączono edycję treści spisu ksiąg z objaśnieniami.

Abstract:

Rankraščių rinkiniai – tai labai įvairaus pobūdžio rankraščiai, paprastai apibrėžiami kaip „ranka ant popieriaus arba pergamento užrašytas tekstas arba dokumentas“ (Peter Beal). Tai gali būti šeimos ar asmeniniai dokumentai, dienoraščiai, laiškai, archyvų rinkiniai ir kt. Viduramžių rankraščiai – kodeksai, žemėlapiai, muzikos kūriniai arba jų fragmentai – sudaro specialią rankraščių rūšį. Kaip ir inkunabulai, rankraščių rinkiniai yra vertingiausia bibliotekų paveldo dalis, dėl jų mus pasiekia itin daug informacijos apie viduramžių istoriją, kultūrą, literatūrą, socialinę istoriją, gyvenimo tendencijas. Be šių šaltinių informacija būtų dingusi. Senų ir retų rankraščių tyrimai svarbūs tiek šalies, tiek visos Europos kultūros ir socialinei istorijai. Žvelgiant iš humanitarinių mokslų perspektyvos, būtina išskirti keletą veiksnių, kurie lėmė reikšmingus pokyčius tyrinėjant rankraščius ir pirmąsias spausdintines knygas. Pačiu svarbiausiu laikomas informacinių technologijų poveikis beveik visoms tyrimo sritims. Šie pokyčiai lėmė ir naujos disciplinos – skaitmeninių humanitarinių mokslų atsiradimą. Pasak Toby’o Burrowso, viduramžių tyrinėtojai yra „pažangiausi skaitmeninių technologijų taikymo humanitarinių mokslų tyrimuose atstovai“. Vis dėlto T. Burrowsas išskiria ir keletą keblumų, susijusių su interneto ir skaitmeninės bibliotekos paslaugomis. Jis nurodo „integracijos ir sąveikos tarp daugybės skirtingų interneto svetainių stygių“ bei terminologijos nenuoseklumą taikant aprašomuosius standartus. Savo ruožtu tai sukelia probleminę situaciją, nes „tyrinėtojams visame pasaulyje kyla daug sunkumų rasti, naudotis ir dalytis žiniomis apie viduramžių rankraščių kolekcijas“. Visiškai pritariame T. Burrowso minčiai, kad šią problemą galima išspręsti sukuriant tarptautinę bendradarbiavimo infrastruktūrą, kuri leistų tvarkyti turinį ir tarpusavyje susijusias žinias. Mūsų nuomone, ši infrastuktūra gali būti įgyvendinta technologinėje semantinio žiniatinklio ir sujungtų atvirų duomenų (angl. Semantic Web and Linked Open Data) terpėje. Straipsnyje aptariami viduramžių rankraščių ir inkunabulų bei jų fragmentų tyrimai ir šių šaltinių aprašymas kaip skaitmeninių humanitarinių mokslų projekto dalis, taikant šią naują technologiją. Nagrinėjamas šios srities Kroatijos Zadaro universiteto Informacijos mokslų fakulteto vykdomas mokslinių tyrimų projektas. Projekto tikslas – atrinkti duomenų elementus, reikalingus tiksliam minėtų šaltinių aprašymui ir jų standartizavimui, naudojant senų ir retų knygų tyrinėtojų parengtas bibliografijos, kodikologijos, paleografijos bei tipografijos ontologijas.Straipsnyje pateikiamas ir trumpas technologinės semantinio tinklo infrastruktūros bei jo standartų įvadas. Detaliai aprašoma metodika, padedanti paskelbti pasirinktą žodyną kaip vieną iš metaduomenų registro paslaugų. Pateikiamas sujungtų atvirų duomenų paskelbimo pavyzdys – pristatatomas grafikas, vaizduojantis iš dalies rekonstruoto rankraščio fragmento aprašymą. Kadangi visos minėtos disciplinos naudoja savo žodynus ir ontologijas, straipsnio autorės siūlo orientuotis ne į vieno bendro žodyno naudojimą, o į atitinkamų terminų sąsajų projektavimą vadovaujantis SKOS taisyklėmis. Taip būtų kuriami būsimos tarptautinės bendradarbiavimo struktūros pagrindai.

Abstract: Wenngleich die Geschichte der mittelalterlichen Handschrift bereits vielfach untersucht worden ist, lohnt es sich immer wieder, die zentrale Rolle der Handschriften für die moderne Bewertung jener mittelalterlichen Gesellschaft in Betracht zu ziehen. Immer noch hören wir viel zu schnell vom sogenannten ‘dunklen Mittelalter’, so als ob jeder Aspekt der damaligen Zeit negativ oder primitiv, ja barbarisch gewesen wäre. Kulturhistorisch erweist sich solch ein Pauschalurteil sowieso immer als höchst problematisch. Indem hier erneut die Entstehung und das Wesen mittelalterlicher Handschriften vor allem im literarhistorischen Kontext betrachtet wird, ergibt sich die ungemein wichtige Möglichkeit, innovative epistemologische Kategorien zu entwickeln, um unser Wahrnehmungsvermögen vergangener Kulturen wie der des europäischen Mittelalters kritisch zu schärfen und zu erkennen, dass unsere Urteile über die Vergangenheit meist doch durch konkrete subjektive Filter bestimmt sind, die kaum der kritischen Überprüfung standzuhalten vermögen. Mittelalterliche Handschriften repräsentieren bestimmt nicht die gesamte Gesellschaft der damaligen Zeit, vielmehr nur die intellektuelle und soziale Elite, aber sie bestätigen auf ihre Weise, dass auch in der Vormoderne ungemein hochentwickelte und ästhetisch und philosophisch bedeutsamste Kunst- und Schriftwerke entstehen konnten.

Abstract:

The Franciscan Monastery of St Domnius at Kraj on the island of Pašman houses an incunable edition of Augustine’s The City of God (De Civitate Dei) which was printed in Venice by Nicolas Jenson in 1475. The incunable features beautiful Renaissance multi-coloured illuminations painted in tempera, sepia, ink and water colours while gold foils and gold dust were used on fol. 17 (the page number is not original but was subsequently added in pencil; this folio contains the beginning of Book 1) and a number of other folios. The illumination on fol. 17 consists of two phytomorphic initials, a decorative border and independent figural scenes while a number of other folios are decorated with phytomorphic initials of the littera notabilior type, the height of which corresponds to two lines, painted in red or blue. The top and left margin of the first page of Book 1 are filled with a decorative border terminating in trilobes on each end. The ornamental scheme of the border consists of a band made up of five thin lines which undulates in a spiral and thus forms circles. These are filled with flowers, leaves and berries painted in blue, green and cyclamen purple but also with gold stylized burdock flowers (Lat. Arctium lappa; some scholars call them gold dots, that is, bottoni dorati). The remaining fields are filled with bent scrolls. In the upper left corner of the frame is a goldfinch. The initial I, composed of phytomorphic motifs in blue, green and cyclamen purple and their shades, is painted against a gold background of the rectangular field situated at the beginning of the text column on the left-hand side. Inside the decorative border, placed at the height which corresponds to the centre of the initial, is a medallion with the bust of St Augustine depicted in the open sky with elongated white clouds and no other details. The illusion of the spatial depth was achieved through the use of tonal gradations: the shades of blue are darker at the top and lighter in the lower half of the sky. St Augustine is dressed in a white robe and a red cloak with a black hood. He is wearing a white mitre with a horizontal and perpendicular band highlighted with gold dust. The shadows and folds of his clothes were articulated with black and white lines. His right hand is pointing to the open book which was painted at the height of his chest. The fingers on his right hand are elongated and thin. St Augustine’s gold nimbus was painted as a full circle the left half of which was outlined in white and the right half in black. St Augustine is directing his gentle and sad gaze upwards. His head is slightly bent. His round and bony head is marked by the large round eyes with prominent sclera and dark circles underneath while the arched eyebrows are thinner at their ends. The nose is small and the mouth is turned downwards. The plasticity of the face and its complexion were articulated with white and pink shades. The trimmed dark beard is depicted with short lines in lighter and darker shades. The ornamental frame which fills the top margin corresponds to the one in the left margin but was decorated more modestly because the miniaturist placed the scroll bearing the printer’s name and the scroll identifying the text as belonging to Book 1 at the centre of the frame which left only the beginning and the end of the frame to be decorated. The scroll with the printer’s name is emphasized by a golden burdock flower at the top of the frame and a golden teasel flower (Lat. Dipsacus fullonum) at the bottom. The lower margin features two symmetrical angels, rendered in a somewhat imprecise drawing, who kneel on the ground painted in the shades of green and brown. The physiognomy of the angels is similar to that of St Augustine. Their round heads have small eyes and noses, shaded circles under the eyes and arched eyebrows. The mouths are depicted as thin lines with pronounced ends and are further accentuated by a dot beneath the lower lip. The plasticity of their faces was achieved through the tonal gradation of pink and white. The angels’ hair, ochre in colour and highlighted with gold dust, is thick and short and covers the tops of their heads like a helmet. The outspread wings were painted in dark and light shades of blue. Two wide red scrolls with white highlights emerge symmetrically from behind the angels at their waist height. Wavy tendrils and gold stylized teasel flowers extend from the red scroll. The angels hold a laurel wreath between them. The colour of the circular field inside the wreath is cyclamen purple. The wreath is formed by three rows of leaves which are bound by four regularly spaced ties. The leaves’ edges and tips were painted in light and dark shades of green. Inside the wreath is a Renaissance crest surrounded by thin white wiggly tendrils with sprouting leaves. The shield, in the shape of a horse’s head, is divided horizontally into the dark blue upper half and the red lower half. It features a gold lion with his mouth wide open who is facing right and holding a tree with his front paws. The tree’s pyramidal top is decorated with small dots indicating leaves and fruit. The shield’s right half is outlined in white and the left one in black. The second text column on the first page of Book 1 is decorated with the painted initial letter G. It consists of phytomorphic motifs in blue, red, yellow and cyclamen purple and their shades. Two small leaves are attached to the initial on its left-hand side. As is the case with the crest, the initial was additionally decorated with elegant white tendrils sprouting leaves and highlighted with gold dust. The background is also gold while the rectangular field around the initial is outlined in a thin black line. Two wavy tendrils and two gold stylized teasel flowers emerge from the corners of the frame on the left-hand side while a green leaf appears at the centre. Apart from these illuminations and initials on fol. 17, the incunable contains other initials, one for the beginning of each of the remaining twenty one book, and all of them consist of blue, green and cyclamen pink phytomorphic motifs painted against a gold background inside a black rectangular frame. The plasticity of these initials was achieved through tonal gradation and the use of yellow while thin white undulating tendrils with variations in width and highlights in gold dust enriched the decoration. Some sentences in the text were emphasized by numerous initials in red or blue of the littera notabilior type the height of which corresponds to two lines of the text. The illuminations of this incunable edition of the De Civitate Dei belong to north Italian or Venetian Renaissance painting and they demonstrate numerous significant similarities with the works of the well-known Venetian miniaturist whom the scholarly literature identified as Maestro del Plinio di Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (Maestro del Plinio di Pico or, more commonly, Maestro di Pico). The attribution of the illuminations in this incunable to Maestro di Pico, who may have been helped by his workshop and assistants especially during the painting of the decorative frame and initials, is based on the figure of St Augustine and the angels who support the crest. Their features display the same typology which characterizes the works of Maestro di Pico. Identical angels appear in the bottom margin of Brunetto Latini’s Il Tesoro (Gerardus de Lisa, Treviso, 1474; Cambridge, Mass., Harvard, Houghton Library, Inc. 6459, c. 7). The figure of St Augustine shows pronounced similarities with the figure of a Dominican monk, set inside the initial O of the littera historiata type, in Nicolaus de Auximo’s Supplementum (Franciscus Renner et Nicolaus de Frankofordia, Venice, 1474; Biblioteca Marciana, Inc. Ven. 494, c.2). Identical angels and putti can be found in the bottom margins of Strabo’s Geographica (Minneapolis, Univ. of Minnesotta Library, Ms. 1460/f St., c.1), and in two copies of Pliny’s Historia Naturalis (Venice, N. Jenson, 1472, Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, Vèlins 498 and Venice, N. Jenson, 1472, San Marino, CA, Huntington Library, n. 2289). A beautiful comparative example is the Biblia Latina (Franciscus Renner & Nicolaus de Frankfordia, 1475, Dallas, Texas, Southern Methodist University, Bridwell Library) and its first page which has a similar composition to that in the incunable from Kraj. The figure of St Jerome, depicted inside a littera historiata provides a plethora of specific Morellian details which are essential for the attribution of the illuminations in the incunable from Kraj to Maestro di Pico. Striking similarities in the depictions of saints, phytomorphic initials and decorative frames can also be found in two psalters (one in Venice, Biblioteca Querini Stampaglia, Inc. 6, the other in Siena, Biblioteca S. Bernardino del Convento dell’Osservanza) and in the first page of the Psalms in a breviary from Paris (Bibliothèque Ste-Geneviève, OE XV 147 Rés). Similar saints and angels all of which belong to the same figural typology were used to decorate three copies from the Commissioni series made for Doge Agostino Barbarigo (Commissione del doge Agostino Barbarigo a Girolamo Capello, 1487, Venice, Bib. Del Museo Correr, MS Cl. III. 33 (fig. 15); Commissione del doge Agostino Barbarigo a Paolo di Canale, 1489, Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, Lat. 4729, c.2, and Commissione del doge Agostino Barbarigo a Tommaso Loredano, 1490, Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, Lat. 4730, c.1). Further parallels can be found in the illuminations of a breviary from Augsburg (c. 1480, Universitätsbibl., Cod. I.2.2o 35) the first page of which has a lettera istoriata with the figure of St Paul whose physiognomy closely resembles that of St Augustine in the incunabule from Kraj, while the bottom margin features centrally placed angels which are identical to those at Kraj. Equally important comparative material is found in three Paduan incunables (Biblioteca del Seminario Vescovile) which contain illuminations attributed to Maestro di Pico. The distinctive features of the angels, putti and saints as well as the type of decoration used in the margins of these incunables also demonstrate striking similarities with the illuminations from Kraj. Other examples include Lattanzi’s Opera (Giovanni da Colonia and Johannes Manthen, Venice, 1478; Forc. M. 3.2), Jacopo da Varagine’s Legenda aurea (Gabriele di Pietro, Venice, 1477, with a likely contribution of his workshop; Forc. M. 2.22) and Cipriano’s Opera (Vindelino da Spira, Venice, 1471; Forc. K. 2.12). On the basis of the comparative analyses outlined above and the similarities which have been noted, it can be concluded that the illuminations in the incunable of St Augustine’s De Civitate Dei (Nicolas Jenson, Venice, 1475), housed in the Monastery of St Domnius at Kraj, were painted by the well-known Venetian Renaissance miniaturist Maestro di Pico. Regardless of the possible input of his workshop and assistants during the painting process of the decorative frame and initials, these illuminations help expand the catalogue of Maestro di Pico’s works and represent valuable contribution to the painting in Renaissance Dalmatia.

Dėl to lenkiškos knygos situacija tautinės nepriklausomybės atkūrimo išvakarėse geriausiai matoma analizuojant šiuos svarbius išorinius veiksnius. Politikos ir teisės santykius su knyga atskleidžia leidybos politika, kuri išsirutuliojo veikiant cenzūrai, oficialiai tikrinusiai visą spaudai skiriamą medžiagą. Po 1830, 1863 ir 1905 metų sukilimų visos valstybės okupantės sugriežtino įstatymus, ribojančius lenkų kultūrinius ir akademinius tekstus. Dėl to sumažėjo oficialiai Lenkijoje leidžiamų knygų skaičius, bet padaugėjo nelegaliai leidžiamų leidinių. Svarbiausi devynioliktojo amžiaus leidybos centrai buvo Varšuvoje ir Vilniuje Rusijos aneksuotoje teritorijoje, Krokuvoje ir Lvove Austrijos aneksuotoje teritorijoje ir Poznanėje (Prūsija). Skirtingų valstybių aneksuotose Lenkijos teritorijose leidinių kontrolė nebuvo vienoda (griežčiausiai vykdoma Rusijos valdomose žemėse), todėl valdžia siekė sutrukdyti spaudinių cirkuliaciją per sienas.XIX a. labai populiaru tapo rinkti lenkiškas knygas ir kitus tautinius suvenyrus. Dėl to susikūrė privačios bibliotekos, turinčios vertingų rankraščių, inkunabulų, senų ir naujų spaudinių, kartografijos ir kitų specialių rinkinių. Didžiausios tokios bibliotekos buvo sujungtos ir vėliau atvertos viešam naudojimui. Jų veiklą teisiškai garantavo fundacijų įstatymas. Tokios buvo Ossolińskių ir Bawarowskių bibliotekos Lvove, Krasińskių ir Zamojskių bibliotekos Varšuvoje, Działińskių biblioteka Kurnike, Raczyńskių biblioteka Poznanėje ir Przezdzieckių biblioteka Čarny Ostrove Podolėje. Svarbiausią darbą XIX amžiaus pabaigoje parengė Karolis Estreicheris (1872–1908 metais buvo išleisti 22 tomai). Kai Lenkija atgavo nepriklausomybę, 1918 m. daugelis knygininkystės įmonių, įkurtų padalijimų laikotarpiu, tęsė savo veiklą.

National Library of the Czech RepublicKlementinum 190, 110 00 Praha 1E-mail: Zdenek.Uhlir@nkp.czAutorius straipsnyje aptaria senųjų istorinių dokumentų, tokių kaip viduramžių ir naujųjų amžių pradžios rankraščių, inkunabulų (knygų, išleistų iki 1500 m.), senųjų spausdintų knygų (iki 1800 m.), istorinių žemėlapių, jei reikia, archyvinių knygų, dokumentų ir pan. skaitmeninimą. Svarbiausia mintis, kad skaitmeninimas – ne tik atvaizdų gamyba, t. y. archyvavimui ir reprezentavimui nepakanka pagaminti istorinio dokumento atvaizdą. Reikia jį papildyti kitais duomenimis, t. y. metaduomenimis, taip, kad būtų galima perteikti visą informaciją apie istorinį dokumentą, suteikti prieigą prie jos, nes skaitmeninimas – tai ne paprasta techninė veikla, o pasaulinė istorinių dokumentų sklaida. Pagrindinį skaitmeninimo tikslą padeda pasiekti trys teoriniai pagrindimai ir techninės sąlygos: pirma, reikia atskirti duomenis nuo programinės įrangos; antra, standartizuoti duomenis; trečia, įrankiai ir sistemos turi tarpusavyje derintis. Taigi skaitmeninimas – tai perkėlimas iš spausdintų dokumentų tradicinės informacinės, komunikacinės ir žinių aplinkos į virtualią erdvę. Toks perkėlimas humanitariniuose moksluose taip pat reiškia paradigmos pokytį. Humanitarinių mokslų, ypač istorijos ir filologijos, paradigmos pokyčiai matomi įvairiose vietose ir vyksta įvairiomis formomis. Skaitmeninant istorinius dokumetus, keturi iš jų yra svarbiausi. Pirmiausia, tai kodikologijos transformacija iš vadinamosios knygos archeologijos į kiekybinę kodikologiją kultūros istorijos prasme; antra, nauja turinio tipų ir/ar turinio lygių koncepcija, išreikšta IFLA dokumente Funkciniai bibliografinio įrašo reikalavimai (sutrumpintai FRBR); trečia, takaus teksto koncepcija, prieštaraujanti ankstesnėms archetipo koncepcijoms, „Urtext“ ir vadinamajai tiksliausiai formuluotei; ketvirta, daugybinių versijų idėja, kuri buvo populiari pastaruosius dvidešimt metų.Toliau autorius supažindina su Čekijos nacionalinės bibliotekos iniciatyva – skaitmenine biblioteka Manuscriptorium. Šiandien tai viena didžiausių pasaulyje skaitmeninių bibliotekų, pristatanti senuosius istorinius dokumentus. Ją sudaro skaitmeninių dokumentų kūrimas ir jų integravimas į įvairius kitus išteklius, naudojančius skirtingus duomenis ir metaduomenų standartus. Manuscriptoriumo širdis – katalogo įrašų, suderintų su MASTER standartu, duomenų bazė. Kai partneriai naudoja kitus metaduomenų formatus, jie konvertuojami į MASTER taip, kad, viena vertus, egzistuotų heterogeniška terpė, o antra vertus, būtų kuriamas homogeniškas centrinis katalogas. Paprastas aprašomasis MASTER standartas šiai skaitmeninei bibliotekai buvo papildytas struktūriniais metaduomenimis, reprezentuojančiais originalaus dokumento struktūrą, ir techniniais duomenimis, aprašančiais skaitmeninimo procesą. Išplėstinis MASTER leidžia jungti individualius analitinius objektus/vaizdus/puslapius į vientisą dokumentą/virtualią knygą. Naudodamas METS standartą, vientisas dokumentas leidžia pirmiausia sujungti kelis katalogo įrašus, reprezentuojančius tą patį dokumentą, antra, sujungti visus tekstus ir koreliuoti juos skaitmeniniais atvaizdais, trečia, sukurti išsklaidytą dokumentą su sąsajomis į nutolusius atvaizdus. Tokiu būdu Manuscriptoriumo skaitmeninė biblioteka gali būti iš tikrųjų išsklaidoma bet kur virtualioje erdvėje. Šiuo metu ketinama šiai skaitmeninei bibliotekai pradėti taikyti kompiuterinės lingvistikos įrankius ir ontologijas, tačiau tai jau ateities uždaviniai.
