AbstractThe demography of Zenaida Doves (Zenaida aurita) was studied on Cayo del Agua, Culebra, Puerto Rico. We collected capture-recapture and reproductive success data and monitored annual changes in the density of ground nests in 1987–1993 and 2000. Models with time-specific apparent survival and constant capture rates (ϕ̂t, p̂c) and constant apparent survival and time-specific capture rates (ϕ̂c, p̂t) were equally parsimonious, with the former having 1.5 times more support from the data. Rainfall of the first six months of the year was positively related to nest density, and crab density w

Such a distinction has rarely been made before. Abstract:
Abstract Background Sharing drug injection equipment has been associated with the transmission of HCV among PWID through blood contained in the cooker and cotton used to prepare and divide up the drug solution. While epidemiologists often subsume this practice under the sharing of “ancillary equipment,” more attention should be paid to the fact that indirect sharing takes place within the process of joint drug acquisition and preparation. Methods We employed an ethnographic approach observing active PWID (N = 33) in four rural towns in Puerto Rico in order to document drug sharing arrangements

Abstract:
Abstract Background Functional disability continues to be a significant public health problem that increases older adults’ vulnerability to experience a diminished quality of life, loss of independence, higher healthcare costs and health services utilization, and increased risks of mortality. Thus, we aimed to study the prevalence of functional disabilities by sex according to the types of daily living activities, controlling for specific sociodemographic variables among older Hispanics from low-income communities. Methods We used a cross-sectional epidemiological research design, considering

Abstract Background Influenza is a highly contagious, acute, febrile respiratory infection caused by a negative-sense, single-stranded RNA virus, which belongs in the Orthomyxoviridae family. Cigarette smoke (CS) exposure worsens influenza infection in terms of frequency and severity in both human and animal models. Methods C57BL/6 mice with or without CS exposure for 6 weeks were inoculated intranasally with a single, non-lethal dose of the influenza A virus (IAV) A/Puerto Rico/8/1934 (PR8) strain. At 7 and 10 days after infection, lung and mediastinal lymph nodes (MLN) cells were collected t
