Abstract:
In his new book, Daniel Henschen studies the foreign mission movement in Denmark as a case of an “empathic globalization” before modern globalization began to be developed at full scale from around 1960. The book is innovative in viewing the mission movement in Denmark as an integrated part of contemporary culture, contributing to the general cultural and political development in its time. At the same time, Henschen develops a new track in mission studies.

Abstract:
Contemporary mission is still struggling with how to connect the contemplative inward journey of the spiritual practices, the outward actions of social justice, and the proclamation of the good news in the ongoing activities of the church today and specifically in its missional task. While the Protestant church is divided over the issue, this paper proposes that there is a possibility of significant convergence of the inner and outer lives of the church, which results in an inner spiritual liberation of mission. This article examines the correlation of spirituality and mission from the “writings” of selected Protestant Latin American scholar-practitioners focusing on the relationship between the inner and outer dimensions of Christian mission, wholeness and integrity of mission, spiritual practices and mission, and worship and mission. In their integration, these emphases provide insights that answer the ecclesiastical question that exists in mission today and provides renovated foundations for the continuing development of the global missional force.

Abstract:
Advances in laser physics and its applications triggered the proposition and development of Laser Astrodynamics. Mini-ASTROD is a down-scaled version of ASTROD (Astro-dynamical Space Test of Relativity using Optical Devices). This mission concept has one spacecraft carrying a payload of a telescope, six lasers, and a clock together with ground stations (ODSN: Optical Deep Space Network) to test the optical scheme and yet give important scientific results. These scientific results include a better measurement of the relativistic parameters (γ to 1 ppm, β to a few ppm and others with improvement), a better sensitivity (several times better) in using the optical Doppler tracking method for detecting gravitational waves, a potential of measuring the solar angular momentum via the Lense-Thirring effect and measurement of many solar system parameters more precisely. These enable us to build a more precise ephemeris and astrodynamics. The weight of this spacecraft is estimated to be about 300–350 kg with a payload of about 100–120 kg. The spacecraft goes into an inner solar orbit with several options. One option is with period 304 days as for the inner spacecraft of the standard two-spacecraft ASTROD mission concept and it takes about 900 days to reach the other side of the Sum relative to the Earth. Another option is to launch with initial period about 290 days and to pass by Venus twice to receive gravity-assistance for achieving shorter periods. For a launch on November 15, 2008, after two encounters with Venus, the orbital period can be shortened to 165 days. After about 400 days from launch, the spacecraft will arrive at the other side of the Sun and the relativistic parameter γ can be determined to 1 ppm. We discuss the payload configuration and outlook for technological developments to reach the mission goals, and summarize the conclusions and recommendations of the first and second organizational meeting for the Mini-ASTROD study.

Gospel Practice Interpretation continues in the early chapters of Mark's Gospel in reflections by contemporary inner city urban ministers and community workers on the variety of ways in which their Gospel practice and witness are received in their experience. Such varied “reception” seems to be like the early disciples' experiences, and even to suggest proper and expected ways in which faithful gospel embodiment produces “results”, as Jesus experienced.

Abstract:
What are the primary sources for the early history of the Tranquebar mission? One depends on Danish, German and English sources, in that order of priority, because the mission was initiated by the King of Denmark, executed by German missionaries and financially supported by the English. The history of Christianity in India, however, is not equivalent to the history of mission boards and missionaries, though these are necessary components of a true understanding of the history of the Church. To be fair, equal importance should be given to the Tamil sources which have been underestimated by historians. The first step must be to collect them, for there is evidence that they were neglected from the very beginning of the mission in Tamilnadu

It is the result of anthropological research focusing on the sense of community among members aged between 15 and 27. In a number of ways faith plays a central role in the community, and the main argument of the article is that the young people's faith constitutes a social identity, since their habitus seems to have a decisive impact on their experience of the faith-based community. The article further demonstrates how the Bible and its narratives form the framework of interpretation with which the young people have grown up, and which, in their present life as adults, continues to mould their understanding and view of life, as well as the role that collective interaction plays in the young people's construction of God and their own identity as Christians. A core argument in the article is that faith is a socialization into a structure which results in all participants having the same frame of reference and therefore experiencing a strong feeling of community with one another within this particular wing of the Church of Denmark.

Abstract:
This study sheds light on the ideas of Harald Stein, who did his utmost to spread the work of deaconesses and diakonia in 19th century Denmark. In a society rapidly changing under the influence of industrialization and socialism, Stein thought the Christian Church ought to aim at saving people physically and spiritually, and he sought to plant the Christian Works of Love, i.e., the work of diakonia, in the Church. The ideals and practices of Stein's work of diakonia were later inherited by the Danish Social Democratic governments.

Abstract:
This qualitative case study begins with the reasoning that a central concern and mission of the Catholic Church is social justice. Catholic schools, as institutions of the Church, are intentional in responding to this central concern and mission. This study attempted to explore how schools fulfill this mission, and in so doing, how students experience three identified principles of Catholic social teaching. This qualitative case study suggests that the school's response to mission will be found in the students' experience. This qualitative case study conducted a thorough review of the literature and research pertaining to Catholic social teaching, the history and purpose of inner city Catholic schools, and the Catholic school as a community. The researcher employed the use of observations, focus group interviews, and document review to investigate the research question: How do students in an inner city Catholic elementary school experience three essential principles of Catholic social teaching: Life and dignity of the person; Call to family, community, and participation; and Preferential option for the poor and the vulnerable? The methodology for this study was designed as socially committed research, to provide a way of knowing for both researcher and participants.

It has been 362 years since George Fox first received the vision from God in 1652. Fox set this mission to be Gospel centered; he had tried to respond the calling of God through medical treatment, education, humanitarian assistance and so on. The spread of Christianity in the history falls into the similar trend. Friends Churches(Quakers)also bring contributions to the spread of Gospel in Chinese sphere for identifiable ways; and it has inspired the researcher’s motivation for writing chapter one. In chapter two, besides illustrating Friends Churches'' initial history and the spirit of “The Inner Light of Christ”, the chapter would also explain an eye opening event of a sister from the Evangelical Friends Church - Eastern Region in America, who in 1887 opened a new page for the spread of Gospel in China. At the end of 1953, three pioneer missionaries arrived Keelung, Taiwan and began with the local mission works. In chapter three, it introduces how the missionaries set up the model and the organization. Within sixty years, Friends Churches established over sixty churches in Taiwan; starting from Chia-yi Province to the North, and then to the Middle. In chapter four, it describes the development of Friends Churches in Taiwan. Around twenty years ago, Friends Churches in Taiwan have reached out to Southeast Asia, Southern Asia, and Mainland China continuing the spread of the Gospel. In chapter five, it summarizes the whole article and in hope of providing valuable reflections enable to apply for further usages. On May 17th , 2014, Friends Churches held the sixty-year anniversary Thanksgiving Worship Service at Chung Cheng Hall, Chung Yuan Christian University. Friends Churches in Taiwan was established by the Eastern American Friends Church, which is only one of the 27 Friends Churches in America. This small size church branch has facilitates evangelization nearly 120 years in the Chinese sphere; humbly make endeavor and has no means to let know. Until now, she still stands firmly in the Chinese society. As the Bible says “Your beginnings will seem humble, so prosperous will your future be.” (Job 8:7 NIV). Friends Churches in Taiwan is ordinary and simple, most locate in the country sides and among the streets and lanes. As Pastor Sheng-Chu Chou and Chung-Chien Shia once made a note on Friends Churches: “ They often time choose the trivial works to serve when they are in the union of the different churches’ congregations. ” Hope this research could be a small screw under the big mission’s construction. Ntakirutimana, Ezekiel. "Facing homeless people in the inner City of Tshwane : a missiological conversation with the Wesleyan tradition." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/21712.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was conducted within the pressing social conditions of human vulnerability manifested in a worsening situation of homelessness which forces homeless people into a deplorable life in the inner city of Tshwane. The study is not a detailed strategic plan to design support services that could improve the situation. It is rather about imagining alternative ways to journey with homeless people in their struggle to regain their humanity; hence the title: Facing homeless people in the inner city of Tshwane. Chapter 2 analyses homelessness in the inner city of Tshwane, locating it within the bigger picture of the City of Tshwane. It takes into account the poverty that drives poor people to the margins, resulting in further human degradation. It exposes the adverse conditions that homeless people endure due to the absence of a social support net. The study obtained its information primarily from conversations with homeless people and with practitioners in church based organisations dedicated to addressing homelessness. Out of these conversations, five different causes of homelessness emerged, ranging from economic and political, to health, social and cultural factors. Chapter 3 describes a number of church-based initiatives in the inner city of Tshwane that address the situation of homeless people, analysing their strengths and weaknesses in responding to the causes of homelessness as identified in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 describes a number of church-based initiatives in the inner city of Tshwane that address the situation of homeless people, analysing their strengths and weaknesses in responding to the causes of homelessness as identified in Chapter 2. Chapter 4 develops an urban theological vision in response to this situation, in the light of the notions of holiness and hospitality in the Wesleyan tradition. Contemplating this teaching, a framework was generated for the journey of the inner city church with homeless people in their efforts to regain humanity, by prioritising economic, political, health, social, and educational strategies. This chapter highlights the fact that John Wesley’s Methodist movement campaigned for the abolition of African slavery. It also journeyed with poor and vulnerable people like widows, orphans and prisoners, using Methodist “Societies” and “Classes” to integrate them into society. Finally, Chapter 5 presents an integrative urban theological vision and a set of contextual strategies for the inner city church to journey with homeless people, following the horizons of human liberation developed in earlier chapters.

Abstract:
“Peace: from desire to practice” its a study that aims at refleting on the concept of peace. Being one of the great aspirations of the human being, the difficulty of achieving it indicates that in it converge some questions that aren’t easy to answer. In general, peace is an antonym of war, but this is a poor definition. Throughout this Report, we try to understand in which ways the contemporary mankind seeks a peace. Some proposals converge on yoga and reiki, present practices in portuguese schools. However, the Christian religion defends that, thinking about the peace on a horizontal plan (among all creatures) presupposes, first and foremost, a vertical peace, that is, between heaven and earth, between God and humanity, because all other forms depend on it. But how can we educate for a peace? In which ways the education can foment a culture of peace in school and afterwards in society? This and other questions are considered in the last chapter, whereby a lecture about the Teaching Unity "World Peace" from the subject of Catholic Moral and Religious Education.

Abstract:
Abstract The association of the Gate Theatre with the Irish language has been always conceived via Micheál mac Liammóir; however, another of its founders, Gearóid Ó Lochlainn, was also Irish-speaking. Ó Lochlainn was a versatile actor in Irish and English, wrote a series of plays in Irish and translated into Irish works by Shakespeare, Ibsen and others. This chapter seeks to fill a gap in the story of the Gate by providing a brief biographical sketch of Ó Lochlainn, including his time in Denmark, a discussion of his role in efforts to establish Irish-language theatre in Dublin (specifically, An Comhar Drámuíochta, which was hosted by the Gate Theatre in 1930-1934), a summary of his involvement with the Gate, a critique of his original plays and his translations which, in introducing Dublin’s Irish-language theatregoers to world drama, complemented the mission of the Gate, and an assessment of Ó Lochlainn’s achievement.

Abstract:
AbstractSince the 1980s universities have been subjected to a seemingly continuous process of policy reforms designed to make them more economical, efficient and effective, according to yardsticks defined by governments and university managers. The pursuit of ‘excellence’, ‘international standing’ and ‘world class’ status have become key drivers of what Hazelkorn (High Educ Pol 21(2):193–215, 2008) has termed the ‘rankings arms race’ that now dominates the world of academia. These policies are changing the mission and meaning of the public university and, more profoundly, the culture of academia itself. While some authors have sought to capture and analyse these trends in terms of ‘academic capitalism’ and the ‘enterprise university model’, we suggest they might also be usefully understood theoretically as illustrations of the rise of audit culture in higher education and its effects. Drawing on ethnographic examples from the UK, Denmark and New Zealand, we ask: how are higher education institutions being reconfigured by these new disciplinary regimes of audit? How are ranking and performance indicators changing institutional behaviour and transforming academic subjectivities? What possibilities are there for alternative university futures? And what insights can anthropology offer to address these questions?

Abstract:
This paper presents the experience gained and the lessons learned over the last decade within the numerous offshore foundation projects undertaken by COWI in European waters. This experience derives from the close collaboration with, and interaction between the owners, contractors, and engineers in the various stages of project development. In turn, the experience draws on COWI’s vast experience within foundation of large bridges world wide over half a century. Focus is on two pioneering gravity base foundation projects: • Nysted in Denmark, currently the largest offshore windfarm worldwide with 72 Nos Bonus 2.3 MW turbines in water depths up to 10 m in the relatively benign inner Danish waters. • Thornton Bank in Belgium, where the first phase — comprising 6 Nos REpower 5MW-turbines of a total of 60 — are planned to be built in the rough North Sea in water depths exceeding 25 m. The two projects illustrate the speed at which the structural concept must keep pace with increases in turbine size. The projects exemplify how a tailor made design is made fit for purpose. The latter case uses state-of-the-art designs for thin-walled reinforced concrete shell structures.

Abstract:
Modern gas turbine engines provide large amounts of thrust and withstand severe thermal-mechanical conditions during the load and mission operations characterized by cyclic transients and long dwell times. All these operational factors can be detrimental to the service life of turbine components and need careful consideration. Engine components subject to the harshest environments are turbine high-pressure vanes and rotating blades. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a turbine component three-dimensional life prediction system, which accounts for mission transients, anisotropic material properties, and multi-axial, thermal-mechanical, strain and stress fields. This paper presents a complete life prediction approach for either commercial missions or more complex military missions, which includes evaluation of component transient metal temperatures, resolved maximum shear stresses and strains, and subsequent component life capability for fatigue and creep damage. The procedure is based on considering all of the time steps in the mission profile by developing a series of extreme points that envelop every point in the mission. Creep damage is factored into the component capability by debiting thermal-mechanical accumulated cycles using the traditional Miner’s rule for accumulated fatigue and creep damage. Application of this methodology is illustrated to the design of the NASA Energy Efficient Engine (E3) high pressure turbine blade with operational load shakedown leading to stress relaxation on the external hot surfaces and potential state of overstress in the inner cold rib regions of the airfoil.
