Digitization of analogue everyday artifacts, i.e. when physical products are equipped with digital capabilities, has a profound impact on today’s society. Some examples of these digital innovations aimed at consumer markets are the “connected” car, the digitized television set, and in the near future, digitized IKEA furniture. Digital innovation provides endless opportunities for providing value adding products and services.

Abstract:
Various models explaining micro knowledge-generating behaviour (in particular exporting and innovating) in the economics literature are underpinned by the overlapping assumption that these activities are largely determined by the resources/capabilities possessed by firms. Despite their perceived importance, there is a dearth of evidence on how these heterogeneous resources and firm-specific capabilities can be incorporated into economics models to quantify their roles in determining microeconomic behaviour. Therefore this thesis attempts to bridge this gap in the literature by integrating the

Abstract:
Maintaining high economic growth rate is arguable the central challenge for China’s macroeconomic policy in the coming decade. The development of innovation, especially in business sectors, is critical for China to meet that challenge. Therefore, it is important to understand the innovation activities in Chinese enterprises. However, due to high adjustment costs and the high uncertainty of innovation activities, innovative firms generally suffer more from asymmetric information than their counterparts who do not engage in innovation activities, which cause lending bias and herding behavior in

Abstract:
This paper examines the innovative behavior of agri-food firms located in Central and Eastern Europe. In the literature, empirical analyses on innovation activities of firms focus on various case studies from around the world. However, very few studies explored the innovation of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) from Central and Eastern Europe’s agri-food sector. The analysis uses the logit estimation method and firm-level data, which are obtained from ERBD-World Bank Business Environment and Enterprise Performance Survey (BEEPS). Results suggest that firms that spent some proportion o

Despite much discussion in the literature of uncertainties in relation to the innovation process, there is little knowledge of how they emerge in this process. This thesis accordingly aims to understand how uncertainty emerges in the innovation process and how firms address that uncertainty to create novelty from the process. Uncertainty is embedded in the innovation process (Jalonen, 2012), which implies that it is not only a factor affecting the innovation process but also an outcome of the process itself. To fulfil the purpose of this study, it is important to understand how the innovation
