Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Technology Transfer (T2) centres have emerged in many countries all over the world as effective agents and catalyst for improvements in disseminating experiences, technologies, best practices and innovations. There is a generally perceived link between the state of development of a country's transportation systems and the extent of technology usage and availability of technical information in that country. To keep the pace with the new technologies, the transportation sector needs information and knowledge that will enable it to advance their processes, incorporate new products into existing programmes, and increase technical know-how that produces positive change and economic development. This paper intended to discuss the innovative strategies adopted in operating transportation technology transfer centre in Botswana. Strategies adopted to achieve the objective were establishing and maintaining a transportation database and website accessible by transportation engineering professionals; publishing and disseminating quarterly T2 newsletter; hosting 6th Africa T2 conference; identifying training programs for the stakeholders. In conclusion, the paper highlighted the outcome of operating T2 centre to enhance transportation through effective technology transfer operations for economic development in Botswana.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on examining the ICT diffusion by studying an initiative of the Malaysian government to bridge the digital divide that exists across the country's urban and rural communities. This is achieved through investigating the operation and the experience of a typical Rural Internet Centre. The findings of this study showed that there is keen interest among the community to learn and sharpen their ICT-related skills. The Internet Centre serves to provide an avenue for the realisation of this goal. The study showed that despite some operational snags, the Internet Centre performed well. One of the by-products of the centre was that its activities fostered closer relationships among users; it provided an avenue for disparate community members to interact and share their new skills. Bringing the ICT usage and appreciation to the rural areas was successful. About half of the centre users made weekly visits during which they searched for information on the internet, sent and received e-mail and attended the Internet Centre's regular IT classes. They also saw it as a valuable communication channel and a potential leveller of the technological capability gap.

Today, the domestic economy is going through difficult times associated with the instability of the geopolitical situation in the world, a strengthening of the sanctions policy of Western countries to-wards the Russian Federation, limited access to foreign investment and other factors that directly affect the speed and quality of economic development of the state. However, Russia today is on the path of innovative development, so the generation and usage in industry innovation is a priority. Recognition of necessity of innovative development of Russia determines the importance of improving and obtaining good results in such a relatively young activities for our country as project management and engineering. In this paper, the influence of project management as a form of innovative management in the development of the engineering centre, based at the University. Steady growth in demand for engineering services, which contribute to qualitative and effective implemen-tation of the latest technological solutions in production, largely due to the significant complexity of scientific results in scientific, research and innovation. Therefore, the use of the principles and methods of project management creates the conditions for high performance implementation of innovation projects, which include the creation and development of engineering centers, including in the field of building materials industry.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Thesis, Paris 8, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PA080035.

Full text
Abstract:
Mobility is nowadays one of the main concerns of citizens and governments. One possible way to explain these difficulties to solve mobility problems would be that real problems of transportation users would be not (or weakly) accounted in the design of new transportation systems. In this perspective, user participation in design projects is increasingly practiced since a few decades. It is motivated by the idea that users have a better knowledge of their own needs and then may contribute to develop innovative solutions. However it is necessary to propose some tools to optimize the users’ contributions to creative design process, and then necessary to identify the nature as well as the levers and barriers to user participation in this process. In the three studies we conducted, we observe that users mainly contribute to creative co-design process by supplying information about their real needs and expectations. However, in order to really account these needs and expectations, it is necessary to tool up creative design with a method which allows to take advantage of the contributions of each participant and to give users a decision-making power equivalent to that of experts. Furthermore, the development of virtual reality software may constitute a lever for creative co-design, in so far as it stimulates the generation of solutions. Moreover, virtual reality allows creating new environments to develop users’ skills to project themselves in a near future and then imagine more creative solutions

Abstract:
AbstractTraditional usage models of Supercomputing centres have been extended by High-Throughput Computing (HTC), High-Performance Data Analytics (HPDA) and Cloud Computing. The complexity of current compute platforms calls for solutions to simplify usage and conveniently orchestrate computing tasks. These enable also non-expert users to efficiently execute Big Data workflows. In this context, the LEXIS project (‘Large-scale EXecution for Industry and Society’, H2020 GA 825532, https://lexis-project.eu) sets up an orchestration platform for compute- and data-intensive workflows. Its main objective is to implement a front-end and interfaces/APIs for distributed data management and workflow orchestration. The platform uses an open-source Identity and Access Management solution and a custom billing system. The data management API allows data ingestion and staging between various infrastructures. The orchestration API allows execution of workflows specified in extended TOSCA. LEXIS uses innovative technologies like YORC and Alien4Cloud for orchestration or iRODS/EUDAT-B2SAFE for data management, accelerated by Burst Buffers. Three pilot use cases from Aeronautics Engineering, Earthquake/Tsunami Analysis, and Weather and Climate Prediction are used to test the services. On the road towards longer-term sustainability, we are expanding this user base and aiming at the immersion of more Supercomputing centres within the platform.

Abstract:
Concerns over high transmission risk of SARS-CoV-2 have led to innovation and usage of an aerosol box to protect healthcare workers during airway intubation in patients with COVID-19. However, only a few studies have examined the impact of these aerosol boxes on the dispersion of droplets and aerosols, which are both thought to be significant contributors to the spread of COVID-19. In addition, to our knowledge, only a few studies have included in the concerned testbeds elements of the work context, which nevertheless have an impact on the use of the device.

Abstract:
This chapter explains the need to better design blended teaching and learning curricula, the need to address infrastructural problems, and the need to organise programmes so that faculty and students can better plan for unanticipated and unintended situations that confront them in the teaching and learning processes. Improving the quality of education through the diversification of content and methods and promoting experimentation, innovation, the diffusion and sharing of information, and best practices are among UNESCO’s recent strategic objectives in education. Discussions in this chapter centre on (1) the contexts of blended teaching and learning, (2) the barriers to blended learning usage, integration, and diffusion, and (3) the need to consider policy outcomes when evaluating blended teaching and learning resources. This study uses a qualitative research method, as both document materials and observation were an essential part of this chapter. This study concludes that the great enthusiasm around blended teaching and learning in sub-Saharan Africa has been dampened by inadequacies in essential services and infrastructures, such as electricity and telecommunication services, and institutional, socio-cultural, and economic barriers. Nonetheless, the development of blended teaching and learning resources continues.

Abstract:
Blockchain holds immense potential in the field of healthcare as it can make decrease costs, mitigate inefficient practices and prevent patient data breaches. A blockchain is a continuous digital record of transactions that are anonymous to third party users and can be stored on multiple devices. If implemented in the healthcare sector, blockchains can improve outcomes of activities such as infection control and prevention for better management during a pandemic, and also for safer storage of patient data and electronic health records. The use of this technology can help in sharing cryptographically secured data between multiple users for better data assimilation between multiple organizations, especially during COVID-19. Moreover, this technological innovation can provide affordable patient-centred outcomes by sharing clinical data for the development of precision medicine. Apart from medical data management, it can also be used in drug development and clinical trials by making each step more reliable through time-stamping and recording all data inputs. Blockchain can also help keep a record to supply chain operations within hospitals and maintain records of medical equipment, drugs and other necessary stocks. Although blockchain is a promising technological advancement, it may still face several challenges, especially in low and middle-income countries. The usage of an internet source is essential for this advancement and it will take time for all healthcare bodies to transition to this technology by leaving paper-based data record-keeping approaches.

Abstract:
The incorporation of digital games in the TESL methodology is considered an innovative approach to teaching and learning English based on its popularity over traditional teaching methods due to its ability to engage and motivate learners. In learning English grammar, digital games have proven mechanisms to offer an interactive fun way, enjoyable but challenging, for learners to practice and reinforce the newly learned grammatical elements with better retention and mastery. Accordingly, this paper proposes that using digital games to teach English grammar can be an effective and an engaging way to help Sri Lankan students improve their English language skills. In Sri Lanka, where traditional methods of teaching English often emphasize rote learning and memorization, approaches to learn based on digital games can be an effective innovation that boosts student-centred and immersive learning by allowing students to proceed at their own pace, receive immediate feedback, and practice skills in a safe and supportive environment. Against this backdrop, this study explores the perceptions of teachers and students about digital game-based learning in a Junior secondary ESL classroom in the Baddegama Educational Division, Sri Lanka. The data is investigated by a questionnaire served to 35 junior secondary level (grades 8-9) students and 10 English teachers in the age group of 24– 35 years. Although most of them responded positively, they pointed out several limitations in the usage of digital games in the classroom and accorded digital games only a supplementary status in TESL endeavours in the Sri Lankan context. The collected data was analysed manually using graphs, pie charts and tables.

Abstract:
People interact with modern technology in various areas of life, both private and professional. One major advantage is the relief provided to users by technical devices that progressively take over tasks and perform them autonomously. Increasing system automation is often accompanied by uncertainties among users, expressed in concerns about paternalism through technology and loss of control. Trust can help to overcome perceived uncertainties and is thus a key driver for the acceptance and successful implementation of innovative technology. The study aim is to understand how trust formation “works”, what technology trust means in different contexts, which perceived uncertainties exist, and how individual usage decisions are made.We designed a two-step empirical research approach. Our aim was to explore what trust and distrust mean to different individuals and groups – in general (e.g., interpersonal trust) and in the context of technology (e.g., trust in automation) – and what influence different dimensions of trust and distrust may have on the acceptance of technology in different application fields. In a preliminary qualitative study, guided interviews (language: German) were conducted to identify conceptual facets of trust and distrust. In sum, 21 adults of different age groups (21 to 86 years) participated. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using content analysis. Results were operationalized and measured in an online questionnaire survey (data collection is ongoing). To investigate influences of human factors on perceptions of trust and distrust, demographic data, personality traits, and attitudes were measured (e.g., risk perception, trust disposition, openness to innovation). To evaluate how differences in context might influence trust perceptions, the fields of autonomous driving and ambient assisted living were considered.Interviews: Trust was described as a positive gut feeling, difficult to put into words, and associated with affection, love, and friendship. Distrust was described as a negative, acrid feeling and associated with doubt, uncertainty, and deception. Experience (good/bad) and knowledge were identified as key factors that influence (dis)trust in general. Regarding technology, technical reliability and functionality as well as the perception of service operators influence the perceived trustworthiness. Trust and distrust seem to influence behavior in terms of reliability and control and depend on general risk perception and attitude (open/skeptical) toward others and things, respectively.Questionnaire: Factor and regression analyses will be conducted to form distinct dimensions for trust and distrust and to model their influence on technology acceptance in different contexts (mobility vs. health care). Cluster analysis will be conducted to examine the extent to which trust and distrust are perceived the same or differently among diverse study participants. Our results contribute to a deeper understanding of trust in automation across contexts and help scientific research measure (dis)trust constructs more precisely, taking into account individual associations and context-specific predictors. This also strengthens the knowledge of trust as a prerequisite for technology acceptance. The practical relevance of our study lies in the possibility to derive design and action recommendations for the user-centred development of technology innovations considering different target groups and application fields.

Abstract:
"USER-CHI is a H2020 research and innovation project, aimed at unlocking the massive potential of electromobility in Europe. This will be achieved by integrating different innovative charging technologies with a holistic perspective, putting the user at the centre and empowering it, and exploiting the synergies between electromobility and the process of greening and smartification of the grid. This process is taking place for achieving the energy transition in Europe, that together with the integration of novel technological tools, business models and regulatory measures, will transform the current scenario. This transformation will generate a financially attractive ecosystem, which improves the user experience of EV drivers. The integrated smart solutions, novel business models and new regulatory framework conditions will be demonstrated and validated in 5 urban areas all along the European territory: Barcelona metropolitan area (Spain), Rome (Italy), Berlin (Germany), Budapest (Hungary), and Turku (Finland). In addition, these 5 sites act as connecting nodes of the key Mediterranean and Scandinavian-Mediterranean TEN-T corridors, which will also be part of demonstration actions. During the project’s first year, The Instituto de Biomecánica (IBV) is leading the generation of the technical specifications for defining new charging infrastructures. This process will be addressed following the user experience principles, achieving a deep knowledge of EV drivers' charging preferences and patterns in order to increase their acceptance. EV supply equipment specifications will be generated both, for slow charging and ultrafast charging applications, proposing a framework for the definition and implementation of USER-CHI solutions, ensuring that they are well-aligned with users’ needs and expectations. This paper will focus on the presentation of the results generated along qualitive user research. These results point out that the EVs acceptance and the technology maturity are closely related to the charging infrastructure broaden, mainly in inter-urban areas. Real time information, usage regulation of charging points and the improvement of charging system’s using experience (time cost reduction and plug standardisation), also arise as key factors."

Abstract:
The present paper aims to develop/investigate an innovative approach for affordable houses for the medium income families, forming the major category of the Egyptian society using Design-Builder simulation and emphasizing the mechanical HVAC systems and their impact on energy consumption. Design-Builder ( a simulation user-friendly interface) for Energy-Plus (an energy simulation engine for energy modeling in buildings, heating, cooling, lighting, ventilating and other energy flows) is utilized to create a “virtual environment” in which the HVAC system effect is studied. Extensive field surveys are made to collect data regarding occupancy behavior, light and equipment schedules and other mechanical systems usage in such application. The majority of surveys indicated that split system (heat pumps) + mechanical ventilation (exhaust fan for bathroom and kitchen) are most common in the Egyptian society. The subject facility is located in Cairo, Egypt. The layout of this building/house has been developed by research architects in the Housing & Building National Research Centre HRBC taking into their consideration the medium income citizens, [1] needs and limited budget, the energy efficiency concepts as well as the previous work carried in the field of sustainable architecture. The individual buildings are formed of three floors containing twelve 100 m2 apartments. Each apartment consists of three bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen and a lounge.

Abstract:
Abstract Energy companies are latecomers to digitization with respect to other business, but new technologies like Big Data, Cloud infrastructure and Artificial Intelligence offer great opportunities. Here we present an integrated approach to the digitalization of an O&G plant aiming to offer operator safety enhancement, production optimization and reduction of the environmental impact to maximize the asset value. This has been accomplished by complex and continuous work powered by the people who are the engine and the real target of the digital transformation process. In the key study hereby presented, an all-round effort has been made to empower the operator's everyday work with digital and innovative tools supporting reservoir, maintenance, production and HSE workflow. Starting from a number of various legacy systems, a single integrated dashboard was built: The Integrated Operation Centre (IOC). IOC is now available on PC and smartphones to all site personnel both at the operational and managerial level. New innovative systems were developed and deployed into IOC to capitalize on the data acquired during years of plant activities. Machine learning and advanced analytics solutions provide new daily insight on how to efficiently schedule maintenance operations and avoid off-specs and downtime on critical equipment, while complex production optimizers help technicians react to unexpected situations and maximize production. Via IoT (Internet of Things) and portable devices, new tools and workflows were deployed onsite to ease the work and enhance the safety of workers with focus on usage of PPE and providing rapid information to locate workers during emergency situations. People from both site and company headquarters ensured the success of the digital transformation by working together in an Agile Method during the development phase and by coaching in the roll-out phase. New professional roles, like data scientist and big data engineers, joined effort with experienced operators to ensure the success of this journey. This cooperation was at the basis of a comprehensive change management effort, which ensured a smooth and constant change in the way the personnel thinks, acts and reacts. This, we believe, is at the very heart of any fundamental transformation, being it digital or not.

Pane, Andrea, Raffaele Catuogno, and Maria Parente. "From rural house to “villa of delights”: knowledge and conservation of Villa Murat in the Sorrento peninsula." In HERITAGE2022 International Conference on Vernacular Heritage: Culture, People and Sustainability. Valencia: Universitat Politècnica de València, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/heritage2022.2022.14366.

Abstract:
Thanks to an innovative territorial plan, drafted with the coordination of Roberto Pane and Luigi Piccinato and approved in 1987, many exceptional examples of vernacular architecture have been preserved in the Sorrento peninsula. Some of these, initially built as rural houses inserted in agricultural estates, have been transformed over the centuries by subsequent aggregation of volumes, into more complex structures, in which agricultural and residential usage have long coexisted. This is what happened to Villa Rossi, later known as Villa Murat, in the municipality of Massa Lubrense: an initial nucleus, dating back to the 17th century, was expanded during the following century, adding volumes and regularizing an initially spontaneous architecture. Despite such transformations, Villa Murat still retains some constructive features which are typical of vernacular architecture of the Sorrento and Amalfi coasts, such as extradosed vaults covered with beaten lapillus or the loggias facing the sea. The villa, which in the meantime had become property of the Rossi family, intertwined major historical events at the beginning of the 19th century, having become the headquarters of king Gioacchino Murat - hence its name - during the “Capture of Capri” against the British in 1808. Villa Murat, located in the quiet hamlet called Annunziata, away from the centres that have undergone major alterations, has still been preserved almost intact, even in the architectural surfaces, both the internal and external ones. For this reason a thorough research was possible, also thanks to an integrated survey with both aerial and terrestrial photogrammetry and laser scanning. The final aim, as the paper will show, is to develop a conservative design proposal, with targeted actions of conservation of architectural surfaces and structural consolidation, that will allow to keep the physical integrity of the villa and its authenticity without giving up a possible but compatible enhancement.

Abstract:
This paper plans on analyzing recent research studies concerning the impact of using ICT skills and tools for teachers. However, the main focus will be on the impact of implicating teachers from the rural areas in using these skills and tools. Another main focus of this paper will be to: examine the impact of implicating teachers from the rural area in different ICT projects; compare urban and rural results gathered from the teachers; analyses the impact of using ICT skills and tools for teachers from the rural area (utility, personal development, limits, needs etc.); compare the results with other studies on this topic (at a national and international level) etc. It is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the fact that the European Union is implementing lifelong strategies policies to encourage the development of ICT skills for teachers. In this sense, we can make reference to different documents that underline various aims that have been developed at the European level in order to ensure correlation between Member States (Memorandum on Lifelong Learning, Council Resolutions etc.). Thus, all countries, including Romania is faced with the fact that it has to improve and develop effective teaching and learning methods and contexts for continuum of lifelong learning, including ICT - Based learning technologies. A recent evaluation report steered with the support of eTwinning project shows that teachers from the rural area are developing more and more ICT skills. The evaluation was conducted in the period October-December 2012, by a team of researchers from the TEHNE Romania (The Centre for Innovation in Education) and from the Institute of Education Sciences. The evidence from this partial evaluation report suggest that: 35,4% of the teachers surveyed from the rural area attended online course; 43,6% of the teachers investigated used the eTwinning portal for continuous professional development; after attending the eTwinning program, 75,2% of the teachers surveyed from the rural area are putting more accent on using ICT support tool in their teaching. Methods and techniques: analysis of documents - research studies, laws, regulations circumscribe / structured legal framework of training and education on this issue, as well as: theories, forms, case studies etc.; survey questionnaires (partial evaluation results from eTwining project and other research papers on the topic). Returning to the purpose of this paper posed at the beginning, the article plans on analyzing the impact of implicating teachers from the rural area in developing ICT skills, as well as identifying the level of ICT tools usage: competences reached, limits, needs, opportunities, personal development etc.
