Abstract:
The concept of innovation hubs are increasingly being adopted by different sectors as a means to accelerate innovation. Previous research on innovation hubs have focused on large-scale and trans-regional hubs on its managerial practices instead of its geographical situation. This paper studies an innovation hub in the Northern Swedish city of Skellefteå, in a region historically relying on heavy industry trying to transform into a high technology economy. The study aims to answer the research question: “what are the challenges and opportunities in building and managing an innovation hub to foster innovation in a geographically isolated region with a relatively small population?” To answer this question, interviews with stakeholders in the innovation hub has been conducted as part of a qualitative case study. The results indicate that the region’s large heavy industry companies provide a fertile ecosystem for startups in the digital industry by enabling the necessary supporting industries and infrastructure. Meanwhile, the lack of certain important elements needed in the startup process, most prominently private funding in the form of angel investors and venture capital, pose challenges to the development of the digital startup community in the region.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to highlight the most prominent barriers to public sector innovation, but also display what an innovation hub can do to help bypass such barriers.Design/methodology/approachThis is an embedded case study with a deductive approach investigating innovation barriers in the public sector after a model of 8 different barriers which are all examined through a theoretical thematic analysis.FindingsLimited resources, poor leadership as well as limiting laws and regulations were revealed to be the greatest barriers to public sector innovation. A lack of incentives and rewards and resistant users and suppliers were deemed not to hinder innovation especially. Innovation hubs can help bypass these barriers by bringing in external resources as money and substitutes, but also by offering public sector employees a platform to meet between organizational units, thereby allowing them to circumvent risk-avoiding cultures and ill-fitting structures to innovation that tend to exist in the public sector.Research limitations/implicationsThe study is limited to innovational projects of one hub, situated in a relatively small town in Sweden. The results might not be fully transferable to other countries or contexts.Practical implicationsThe results of the study could give an indication to public sectors what use an innovation hub can have in bypassing barriers to innovation.Originality/valueFew studies have addressed the role of innovation hubs in the public sector, especially in combination with innovation barriers.

Title: Factors Influencing Innovation Capacity of Regional Innovation Hubs Authors: Sanvida Vishani Sawunda Hannadige & Dona Kithmini Chiranthini Weerasinghe Supervisor: Ehsanul Huda Chowdhury Examiner: Maria Fregidou-Malama Date: 28- Jan- 2021   Aim: This study aims to identify the factors influencing innovation capacity of innovation hubs and explore how innovation hubs influence regional innovation process.    Methodology: This is a qualitative study which follows the inductive approach and the strategy of multiple case study. Primary data were collected through semi-structured interviews with ten respondents in the network of an innovation hub.   Findings: The findings of this study suggest five main factors which positively influence the innovation capacity of an innovation hub. Those are infrastructure, knowledge sharing, culture, marketing strategies and supporting network of the hub. Further through the findings we identified that innovation hub creates a well-balanced socio-economic impact on the region it operates.   Contribution: This study provides a comprehensive knowledge to the existing theories by discovering five theoretical areas which influence innovation capacity. Also it assists the stakeholders of innovation hubs to overcome their deficiencies in order to build a strong innovation capacity. Further, this study encourages innovators, entrepreneurs and investors to work in collaboration with innovation hubs.   Suggestions for Future Research: Qualitative or quantitative methods can be used to explore the outcomes in different perspectives. The newly identified features under marketing strategies can be further studied for their importance in other domains such as ecosystem and stakeholders. The revised framework can be tested in future researches.

Abstract:
Current innovation literature stress the fact that companies seeking to boost their innovation capabilities should open their boundaries and collaborate with partners for bolder and faster value creation. While correct, and in fact frequently practice among several industries, many companies have failed in their attempt to innovate on ecosystem’s settings due mainly to lack of the appropriate management methodologies. Although co-development alliances have become a common practice in the market place, tools and strategies to manage them are quite behind on real execution. Furthermore, companies currently involved in such scenarios have overlook the new conditions of co-creation, failing to yield return over the cost of capital, and losing credibility on their ecosystems. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify practical managerial strategies, process and tools for orchestrating innovation ecosystems in general, and tailored them into real company current practices, in particular. In this thesis, a theoretical revision has been carried out in order to understand what innovation ecosystems are, why companies involved in innovation should care about them and what are the essential elements for orchestrating projects breed in that setting, being successful at it. Furthermore, a case study was developed with the purpose of connecting empirical findings to theoretical suggestions, and draw conclusions and recommendations. The company chosen for the analysis is one of the larger international players in their industry; having strong motivations to grow their innovation field, clear objectives to do it on partnership basis, and unquestionable position to claim the role of orchestrator. Moreover, management at this company believed that their innovation partnerships are not fulfilling expectations, and wanted to know how they can improve the way those projects are being managed, while keeping the center of the innovation ecosystem. The results show the process to create an orchestration strategy model, and a final proposal for the company under analysis. The case was developed taking into consideration information provided by key processes stakeholders over a series of interviews, and critical observation of the system during a six-month period. Scientific implications contribute in providing a framework for orchestrating innovation ecosystems on a technology-driven industry, while managerial implications contribute in providing the company with a robust model on how to position as a global hub for cross-innovation.

A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Economics from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
There is a growing interest in social impact assessment across the private, the public and the nonprofit sector. However, there is still limited academic research produced in this area, particularly in what concerns to the application of the Social Return of Investment (SROI) methodology. The goal of this Work Project is to give an overview of the social impact measurement literature and apply the Social Return on Investment, a flagship methodology to measure impact, to the specific case of the Social Innovation Hub (SIH). The findings suggest that each 1€ invested on the SIH generates 1,21€ in terms of social value. While this value seems very appealing to use, there are some risks in monetizing impact in such way, mainly due to the lack of reliable data available for benchmarking purposes.

Abstract:
The world is changing. With more complex products and services available, shortened life cycles, and shifts in customers behavior due to the increased availability of information, companies needs to explore new capabilities and organizational practices to effectively preserve a competitive advantage through new innovations. A competitive advantage is said to be difficult to create and sustain in today’s markets. Many startups and corporates, are therefore, changing their innovation processes from a traditional linear process to more of an open process. Many scholars have studied this phenomenon from a corporate perspective, leaving a gap in existing literature on how startups are contributing with their innovative and entrepreneurial mindset to the context of open innovation. It is visible that startups are possessing an extensive amount of exploration capabilities, while lacking capabilities related to exploitation. Finding a balance between exploration and exploitation capabilities is an issue for startups due to its limitations of resources. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to distinguish how an innovation hub enables startups with balancing exploration and exploitation capabilities. For this study, the innovation hub of our choosing is Ignite. Based on the literature review and the identified research gaps, the following research question has been formulated to investigate the phenomenon of balancing organizational capabilities from a startup perspective: RQ: How can an innovation hub help startups find a balance between exploration and exploitation capabilities? To properly answer the research question, the chosen research approach was selected as a qualitative research method. The empirical findings were gathered from 11 semi-structured interviews, where nine interviews have been with managers from startups active in Ignite and two interviews with team members from Ignite. In addition to the empirical findings, we developed a proposed framework that explains the whole process of startups being active in Ignite from pre-intervention, addressing challenges related to startups and the reasons why they should engage in being active in an innovation hub, to post-intervention, addressing the possible outcomes received by being active in Ignite. To conclude, this thesis contributes with an understanding on how startups may use a third party, such as Ignite, to get help with the balancing act of exploration and exploitation capabilities. The findings show that the third party is helping the startups with balancing their organizational capabilities in an indirect way. This is done through Ignite’s accurate matchmaking process and their deep understanding about which capabilities the big corporations are looking for, which Ignite gathers from a needs analysis together with the big corporation. From this thesis, startups as well as big corporations, will understand the importance of involving a third party for the purpose of creating and sustaining a competitive advantage by balancing their exploration and exploitation capabilities.

Abstract:
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a well-known and comprehensive framework for sustainable development. However due to the overlapping and interrelated nature of the goals, action towards one goal can positively or negatively contribute to another.Social innovation hubs including Impact Hub and Centre for Social Innovation use the SDGs to support social entrepreneurs to have a positive impact. Document analysis and interviews with 15 practitioners from these hubs informed the research on how the organizations perceive and contribute to sustainability, how they integrate the SDGs, and the challenges and benefits with using the SDGs. Based on that, this research has developed five recommendations for social innovation hubs to: 1) Define Sustainability; 2) Enhance Visioning; 3) Design co-creative programs; 4) Define Impact;and 5) Communicate Impact. While other elements of the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD) could be used to complement the SDGs, the Sustainability Principles (SPs) of the FSSD are recommended as a definition for sustainability.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In recent times, the financial market has changed and a contributing factor is technological innovation. Technological innovation can develop the provision of financial services which companies such as banks offers their consumers. There are two ways a jurisdiction can promote the development of financial services; either through a regulatory sandbox or an innovation hub. A regulatory sandbox is a safe environment where banks and companies who only works with technological innovation (FinTech-companies) can test their unregulated business models. The environment is controlled and monitored by a supervisory authority. Regulatory sandboxes are available in more than 50 different jurisdictions, and an increasing number of European countries are either thinking of establishing one or have already done it.   Within the European Union, some organisations such as the European Commission and the European Parliament have expressed their willingness to regulate regulatory sandboxes at Union level. For now, sandboxes can only be set up as a national regulatory sandbox. The purpose of this master’s thesis is to investigate whether the Union needs to regulate regulatory sandboxes and if so, should the Union introduce a directive or a regulation on harmonized national regulatory sandboxes.    The investigation of this thesis shows that regulatory sandboxes are needed even though some Member States are unwilling to establish one. Regulatory sandboxes are needed in the Union because it furthers the competition between companies offering financial services. Regulatory sandboxes also help new entrants such as FinTech-companies to grow. If the Union does not regulate regulatory sandboxes, it will hinder the free movement of services. The best outcome for regulation, would be if the Union adopted a directive on harmonized national regulatory sandboxes. The regulation should be adopted as a directive because it facilitates Member States in determining which provisions should be implemented in national legislation.

Abstract:
Open innovation is a term that has become popularised over the years, due to changes in how business is done as a result of globalisation and digital transformation. Efforts are being made by incumbent companies to collaborate with external parties to a greater extent, and at the same time, the startup landscape has contributed with new technologies and innovations that in some cases have disrupted markets. A collaboration between large companies and startups can bring about positive synergies since these two types of organisations are different and have the possibility to complement each other. This master thesis looks into the outside-in model of open innovation, specifically examining corporate accelerator programs and incubation hubs from a startup perspective. The following research explores what key services that are offered within these corporate programs and how they can be improved according to startups that have previously partaken in them. This research is a qualitative study with an abductive approach. As part of the research, 10 semi-structured, in-depth interviews were held with representatives from a variety of startups. The major services desired by the interviewees to be included in corporate-run startup programs range from access to internal and external networks to putting more focus on a variety of funding alternatives. Early-stage startups expressed the desire of receiving help with understanding their market and customers. The key improvement areas brought up by the startup companies included the presence of internal champions that can help speed up certain processes and act as a facilitator for important meetings. Many startups point to the importance of having the influence to customize their program experience. In addition, accelerator and incubator employees with previous entrepreneurial experience are considered very helpful by the startups since they can grasp the struggles of the startup in a better way. Furthermore, to have more financing opportunities is desirable.

Abstract:
Innovation hub organizations - or 'hubs' - have become a prevalent form of support for technology entrepreneurship in Africa. About 170 African hubs have been established, most since 2010. Practitioners have argued either that hubs are transformative network infra-structures for Africa's fledgling digital economy or that they are ineffective business incubators. This thesis steps back from this debate about whether hubs work. Instead, it asks how African hubs work, specifically how they shape relationships of technology entrepreneurs. Literature on intermediation and incubation is reviewed to establish a theoretical framework. The thesis then tests and extends the framework based on an extensive, grounded empirical inquiry. In-depth case study data (including 119 interviews with 133 participants) on six hubs were collected during field studies in Kigali, Harare, and Accra from September-December 2014. The thesis finds that the analyzed hub organizations were defined by nested, fluidly bounded entrepreneurial communities. Communities varied by their level of activation: mem-bers of active communities had concern for each other and recognized communities as social entities, while inactive community members only shared a loose purpose. The six hubs followed two distinct organizational patterns: the technology hub (depending on active core communities) and the entrepreneurship hub (relying on active peripheral communities). Based on these results, the thesis theorizes hubs as assemblers of technology entrepreneurs: hubs assemble previously distant and different actors into entrepreneurial communities. Assembly is unique to hubs: it is related to but different from incubation and most forms of intermediation. Assembly theory addresses important meso-level analytical gaps in prior research on the coordination and organization of entrepreneurship. The thesis underscores limitations in African technology entrepreneurship environments, advising hub practitioners to acknowledge that 'only what is there can be assembled.' Ultimately, it highlights that hubs have been critically misunderstood, and clarifies what hubs can and cannot do for technology entrepreneurs.

Abstract:
Given the increasing complexity of global ecological and social problems, innovation plays a key role in solutions for sustainable development. Within innovation ecosystems, intermediaries such as innovation hubs play an important part in influencing other actors like startups, investors and policymakers to create solutions for change. Therefore, it is essential that innovation hubs incorporate sustainability into their practices, if they are to contribute to addressing the Global Sustainability Challenge (GSC).   To see how this could be done, this study examines the case of the Venture Café Global Network (VCGN) a type of sector agnostic innovation hub. The study used a multi-method qualitative approach. Data was gathered through semi-structured interviews with different players in the innovation ecosystem, as well as with actors from within VCGN, and through a documentary analysis.   The results and discussion are presented according to certain overarching themes that emerged from the interviews and answer the research questions. Along with a longer list of recommendations, this study concludes that the adoption of a shared organisational definition of sustainability is the bedrock for any sustainability integration and vital for innovation hubs to impact other actors in their innovation ecosystems, to address the GSC.

In today's innovation economy, the development of innovation hubs is viewed as a strategic undertaking to nourish the entrepreneurial ecosystem and to enhance economic vitality. The study uses Silicon Valley, one of the most successful innovation hubs in modern history, as a case example to find the factors that have contributed to its success, and how these factors will evolve over time. Using existing literature and in-depth interviews, the study produces a framework of key factors that will influence the development of such hubs in the future. Silicon Valley case shows that the foundation element of a successful innovation hub is people - the human capital. Adding to this element, five hardware ingredients - Universities & R&D Centers, Venture Capital, Major Corporations, Service Providers, and Government - have an irreplaceable role in sustaining the vitality of such hubs. The intangible software, culture with its four dimensions entrepreneurial mentality, mobility of resources, global perspective and shared vision, acts as a catalyst that brings the foundation element and hardware ingredients together, allowing them to interact and cooperate. Ultimately, an effective entrepreneurial ecosystem is formed from the combination of all these factors. The findings from in-depth interviews suggest that the original culture of Silicon Valley will continue to play a key role in future innovation hubs. This entrepreneurial mentality, especially in terms of openness, supportiveness, forgiveness and risk-taking attitude, remains highly desired by today's entrepreneurs. Simultaneously, recent shifts in the demographic landscape have changed the nature of the foundation element - people. Millennials and the Creative Class have become a dominant pool of talented workforce, and they possess different values and preferences compared to other generations. Together with urbanization, this creative workforce shows high appreciation towards the role of place and urban lifestyle. Thus, in order to successfully attract and retain such talents, urban location will play an increasingly important role in future innovation hubs. It is estimated that the "place element" will become a new addition the innovation hub hardware system, supporting the overall development of entrepreneurial climate.

Abstract:
The aim of this investigation is to understand how international project teams enable mature multinational enterprises (MNEs) to cope with knowledge diversity and political activity, two well-known disruptive organizational phenomena, in order to leverage their innovative potential and competitive capabilities. To answer this question a longitudinal multi-case study has been designed to collect in-depth qualitative data from three large-scale international projects conducted by a focal MNE and an array of its subsidiaries. In a dialectic way, data collected has been used both to enhance the dynamic knowledge change framework provided by contemporary sociology and to explain the complex mechanisms that make international project teams an increasingly used organizational tool. As a result, knowledge change (and thus innovation) has been found to hinge on a dynamic balance between power and politics which is favored by conditions that are inherent to these organizational settings. Finally, a model describing the mechanisms that enable international project teams to drive knowledge diversity and political activity towards innovation and knowledge change within MNEs has been developed.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to understand How Corporate Innovation Hubs (CIHs) can Mitigate NIH and NSH Problems in Knowledge Transfer. To fulfill this purpose, the following research questions were derived: RQ1: What are the causes of NIH & NSH problems among actors collaborating through a CIH? RQ2: What are the consequences of NIH & NSH problems among actors collaborating through a CIH? RQ3: What mechanisms can a CIH use to mitigate NIH & NSH problems among collaborating actors? Method – The study is an explorative inductive multiple case-study, investigating five CIHs situated in either Silicon Valley, US or Gothenburg, Sweden. In total, 39 interviews were conducted in three waves, and results were derived using a Gioia analysis. Findings – This study resulted in a framework illustrating connections of causes and consequences of NIH and NSH problems with corresponding mitigating mechanisms. The most critical causes are Obsessive control (NIH), Internal antagonism (NIH) and Low confidential awareness (NSH). The most severe consequences are Use of irrelevant knowledge (NIH), Suffocation of external ideas (NIH) and Restrained problem-solving (NSH). The most important mitigating mechanisms are Translate relevance of ideas (NIH) and Create mutual confidential understanding (NSH). Theoretical and Practical Implications – This study contributes to the scarce literature on NIH and NSH problems among multiple actors collaborating through CIHs. By identifying causes, consequences and mitigating mechanisms of NIH and NSH problems, CIHs will be able to detect NIH and NSH tendencies among its collaborating actors, to mitigate its causes and prevent its consequences. Limitations and Future Research – The study is limited by the investigated CIHs focus on exploring future transportation solutions, indicating that future studies can investigate CIHs in other industry settings and among other actors collaborating through CIHs. Abstract:

Abstract:
The original study on which this study was based on was conducted by Jacob Goldenberg, Sangman Han, Donald R.Lehmann, and Jae Weon Hong and published in 2009. In a slight contrast to Goldenberg et al (2009), this study was conducted among a bottom of the pyramid (BOP) network in South Africa using one non discretionary product whilst the original study was conducted on multiple high tech products in Korea This study explores the role of hubs (people with an outstanding number of social ties) in diffusion and adoption of products. The study was conducted using data on a large network and its adoption of a product (electricity) to identify two types of hubs – innovative and follower hubs and their role in influencing adoption ala Goldenberg et al (2009). Even though hubs are not necessarily opinion leaders nor are they necessarily innovators (as described by Rogers, (1962)) they tend to adopt earlier in the diffusion process. Innovator hubs have a greater impact on speed of adoption whilst Follower hubs have greater impact on the size of the market or total number of adoptions. Interestingly and crucially this early adoption behaviour of hubs can be a useful predictor of future product success. Among BOP network nodes, relationships and trust are important in determining the amount or degree of influence one can exert on a fellow network member. Homogeneity increases trust which in turn impacts the role of a hub as a force of influence. The centrality of hubs to networks is also a factor behind their role as information to the rest of the network passes through them, to a degree giving them control over the dissemination of information. Abstract:
Head-up display (HUD) has a proven track record in the aviation and automobile sectors, allowing pilots and drivers to access information without diverting attention from the outside world. Similar benefits may be realized by the installation of HUD in locomotive cabs. The objective of this thesis work is to develop the user interface for HUD based on the ERTMS system. The HUD will be an added safety feature to the trains to prevent drivers from refocusing between the instrument panel and the outside view thus leading to reduced driver fatigue and better observation of the tracks ahead. Scenario Based Design method has been used to implement the project work with discussions regarding its advantages and limitations. The use of scenarios has allowed the design team to understand the scenarios that the drivers face in depth and has aided during the workshops to understand the drivers’ routine better. Additionally, recommendations for the hardware, installation and future work have been provided to support further implementation of the project.

Abstract:
This thesis explores building processes in the south of Sweden with the aim to accomplish low energy housing in accordance with the German standard for passive houses. In this thesis, the passive house is regarded as an innovative en-ergy concept which has been introduced to Sweden and to a conservative sector. The purpose of the study is to provide an understanding of processes in the im-plementation of an innovation for energy-saving dwellings. The process is recon-structed with data from interviews, minutes, articles, reports, etc, and presented as stories of different sequences including how the housing projects were organised, how the energy concept was established among the participants, how decisions were made and what messages were presented about the energy concept in mass media. The energy concept is followed in a process of transformation where it was subject to five fundamental acitivites: decomposition, moulding, composition, transportation and storage. The concepts originate from a time-geography per-spective, founded and developed by the Swedish geographer Torsten Hägerstrand. The energy concept was decomposed at a specific local context and transported to another, where it was moulded and composed into a new energy concept. The new energy concept was stored in a new setting. By following the trajectories of peo-ple and technologies, conclusions about the energy concept can be drawn. The building proprietors chose less conventional ways of managing the building proc-ess in order to have more control. The projects were started by people who them-selves had their own experience of passive houses. Solar collectors were loosely coupled to the energy concept and needed technology carriers.

Yang, Yi. "Contribution à l'évaluation économique des marées vertes." Thesis, Brest, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016BRES0122/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Due to seasonal blooms of green macro-algae belonging to the ulvaceae family, green tides are part of the larger class of harmful algal blooms (HAB), which has developed worldwide at a high rate during the last three decades, favoured by the eutrophisation of coastal waters due to human activities. The massive accumulation of seaweeds on the shore resulting from green tides generates a variety of damages to market and non-market activities, and is a potential threat to human health. In the same time, green algae are a natural resource that may be turned into a variety of valuable products through industrial processing. R&D programs devoted to this subject have been launched in countries subject to green tides, such as China and France. The subject of this dissertation is the economic assessment of green tides, in a cost-benefit perspective. To this end, it studies the costs of green tides for private agents and public bodies, as well as the benefits due to the processing of algae. The dissertation relies on two case studies, one in China (Yellow Sea), and the other in France (Brittany). Chapter 1 and chapter 2 are dedicated to the case of the green tides that have developed each spring in the Yellow Sea and reached the southern shore of the Shandong province during the last decade. Chapter 1 investigates the bio-economic mechanisms of these episodes, their economic consequences, public management policies, and stakeholders’ perceptions. Chapter 2 tries to quantify the social cost of green tides, including management costs (minus benefits generated by green algae processing) and residual costs to market and non-market activities. Chapter 3 relies on the Brittany case, and focuses on the economic consequences of green algae industrial processing. Making use of a regionalized input-output table, it estimates, at various geographical scales, the economic impact of a program concerning the industrial processing of algae that are collected during the green tides on the Brittany shoreline

Abstract:
The role of airports has revealed itself as crucial in the tourism system although often goes unnoticed as it is deemed ancillary to the air transportation. This assessment presumes a change in the paradigm and a rupture with a set of obsolete positions in an attempt to find contemporary approaches with an advantage point for the tourism destination management. The planning of strategies bearing in mind the specificities of each market is therefore of the essence for an innovative conceptualization of priority tourism products. This dissertation thus intent to promote a difference and transformational study by relating the two distinct matters – airports and meeting industry – which enhance each other when jointly analysed under a dynamic outlook. The new challenges placed to airport management models, resultant from the current competitive era demand the creation of differentiated strategies. On another side of the question, the meeting industry is a key segment for Portuguese tourism broadly and for the Lisbon region in particular, and must be elevated to a new level of excellence. Beyond the adoption of an innovative approach it is of prime importance for the destinations to adopt a systemic regional development model grounded on principles of quality aided by development of infrastructures and services critical for an improvement of the offer. The methodology adopted to respond to this assessment has gone through an empirical analysis of data which in turn has made possible to characterize the extension and relevance of the particulars on this duality. The exploratory expert interviews and the application of queries by questionnaire have enabled for the creation of a solid base of information, contributing to the answers to the challenges proposed.

Scott, Lee-Anne. "Incubation Hub: a 'new' school for artisans where architectural innovation meets education in South Africa." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/15623.

Full text
Abstract:
This document is submitted in partial fulfilment for the degree: Master of Architecture [Professional] at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, in the year 2013.
In South Africa there are approximately three million people between the ages of 18 and 24 who are unemployed or not part of an education or training institute. There are residing issues concerning education in post-apartheid South Africa, such as poor quality education in areas where the socio-economic climates still prove challenging and an increasing absence of educational institutions and training facilities. As a result, South Africa is suffering from a lack of skilled labour across all sectors of trade. In the Green Paper for Post-School Education and Training, published in 2012, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) addresses the current issues around education in South Africa and indicates that part of the resolution is to form a “nexus between the formal education system and the workplace.” Both private and public sectors need to adopt new infrastructure to ensure a higher success rate for empowering South Africans through the provision of skills-based education. This thesis is about creating a ‘new’ school idea - The Incubation Hub - for artisans, where architectural technological innovation meets education in South Africa, opens up vocational opportunities and subsequently allows for economic growth. The ‘new’ school will not only create a stronger and a more advanced workforce for South Africa but aims to bridge the gap between the corporate sector and the education and political sectors. The Incubation Hub tackles the proposed matter by recognising the opportunity for an architectural intervention, whereby a literal and physical symbiotic relationship is formed between two buildings – each with a separate function and role in society and the economy - that unites their individual responsibilities to create a new identity. In doing so, the Incubation Hub aims to improve the social and economic status of South Africa on a local and global level.

Abstract:
The nineteenth and early twentieth century were characterised by the establishment, diversification, and specialization of fields of thought. Many disciplines came into being, developing independently of one another and in some cases dividing into clearly compartmentalized sub-disciplines. Although this division has been the basis of education for centuries, there is a growing realisation that for education to be effective, it must help the learners to seek answers to some of the fundamental real-life problems around them. This cannot be achieved through the current hierarchical and discipline-oriented approach, as life and its current problems are not divided up into disciplines. The argument for multiple disciplinarity is not that the disciplines represent a false theory of knowledge but rather that they are not a complete statement if we take them on their own. It is in the interconnections, the integration, that they attain their most effective use. Therefore, this project aims to provide a suitable architectural space in which a multiple disciplinary approach to education can be promoted. The project itself utilised a multiple disciplinary approach in the design process which was influenced by the history and existing structures of the site, neo-futurist designs and principles, the chemical and physical properties of gas, and particle architecture. The proposed building provides all of the required program elements while promoting collaboration and multiple disciplinary learning.

Abstract:
The area of entrepreneurship and innovation has been increasingly debated during the last years. Major cities across the world have been focused on creating ecosystems capable of supporting its startups, aiming to bring innovation and socio-economic improvements to their citizens. The city of Porto is not an exception, and over the last few years has been assuming its position, focused on foster entrepreneurship and innovation. The process is slow and complex, and as suggested by the literature, the creation of an ecosystem is only possible when a set of different factors and elements align together and form interconnections that allow mutual development. The problem is that there are no two equal ecosystems, each one has its own characteristics and limitations that constitute a unique case study that can lead to the ecosystem’s growth, or to its destruction. Therefore, the objective of this investigation was to study the unique case of Porto’s startup ecosystem, resorting to different types of documentary analysis and conducting interviews with experts and professionals inserted in the context of Porto’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, to explore the impact of startups activity in the city, and to understand the connections, relations, and major limitations of the different elements of study. Through the analysis of Porto’s policies, support, human capital, finance and culture, it was possible to understand the efforts being made towards the success of its entrepreneurial activity, as well as the major limitations that are holding entrepreneurs and getting in the way of startups growth. Because the only way to overcome limitations is to become aware of them, although the praiseworthy increasing number of cooperation initiatives and talented people in technological and scientific areas, Porto is an early-stage ecosystem with room for improvements in different areas of knowledge, as talent management, financial supports, entrepreneurial incentives, and startup’s programs, all addressed during this investigation and with great relevance to the ecosystem sustainable growth.

Shinga, Nonkululeko Yolette Zenobia. "Taking ideas from mind to market : challenges and critical success factors for effective incubation of ICT start-up firms within the innovation hub." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/7354.

Full text
Abstract:
The study examines the challenges and critical success factors for effective incubation of ICT start-up firms. Information and communication technology (ICT) start-up firms are internationally acknowledged for their contribution to economic growth, improving the quality of life and job creation. The selected case site is the Innovation Hub which hosts a hi-tech incubator called Maxum. The Innovation Hub is an internationally accredited science park located in Tshwane, Pretoria which was launched by the Gauteng Provincial Government in year 2002. The Innovation Hub’s challenge is that its incubation programme is similar to those employed in the developed world. The off-the-shelve programme has not been customised for use within the South African socio-economic context. However, the Innovation Hub is a relatively high performing incubator which has met the prescribed precursors for success. The critical success factors include the hands-on professional services provided to entrepreneurs, value networks and government support. In order to improve the success rate of the incubation of ICT start-up firms, there is a need to adopt a long-term approach towards innovation support and to establish an incentive funding mechanism that fosters job creation by entrepreneurs. The objectives of the study were achieved. The researcher has extended Kumar & Kumar framework and added three critical success factors. The findings of the study cannot be generalised but can be replicated. These findings are of value to the incubator managers and also to the policy-makers when developing and enacting policies that promote incubation of ICT start-up firms.

Abstract:
To overcome the obstacles to innovation, large companies have increasingly created corporate innovation hubs, accelerators or incubators. This study uses the example of the Deutsche Lufthansa Group to illustrate their main considerations, opportunities and challenges. It provides first the set-up, design and evaluation of Lufthansa’s innovation hub model and then derives six key implications other companies should acknowledge when creating a respective hub. One of them is of particular importance: Since ideas that were initially developed and fostered by an innovation hub often lose ground thereafter, each innovation hub should establish a clear “follow up” plan as an inevitable strategic element.

The original “three treasures” boosted by Changhua City are meat balls, rice with stewed pork as well as the “Rat Noodles”(special soup noodles with shrimp balls, mushroom balls and chicken balls created by Mr. Mu-rong Chen and his father, both of whom were born in the lunar year of the Rat), which are renowned throughout Taiwan. With the change of internal and external environment, to encourage the diversified development of agriculture and display the rich agricultural characteristics of Changhua City, the Changhua Farmers’ Association selected in 2010 three of the most unique local farm products and named them as “the new three treasures of Changhua”, including the coffee produced on Pakua Mountain (Eight Diagrams Mountain), the pure longan honey and the health-preserving drinks. This study uses case studies mainly to explore how the Changhua Farmers’ Association created the new specialty agriculture products and successfully promoted such products, bringing new business opportunities for Changhua. The study also tries to understand the positive influence of the new “three treasures” on the city and the local farmers. The basis for this study are the creativity theory 4P and the cultural creative park theory 5P put forward by scholar Ms. Ming-Hui Chen (2010), which are concluded and modified to the five aspects of Policy, Person, Process, Place and Product. In-depth interview and secondary data were used to collect and analyze the date to explore the innovative development mode of the specialty agriculture products used by the Changhua Farmers’ Association.

With the Economic growth and the improvements in living standards, the function of a bicycle gradually transformed from a traditional method of transportation to leisure sport. The Bicycle industry has significantly changed toward design for sport.Consumers are now seeking a product that gives them the comfort and satisfaction. However, the cyclist experiences the poor conditions of off-load are worse than the on-load changes. The Rotation-translation matching is essential for entire bicycle system to produce a good bicycle. A good design of the wheel hub will boost the efficiency of translation and reduce the unevenness of the bicycle. Pedal position and noises are relevant to hub design. Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is a methodology used to transform user demands into quality design, which was originally developed by Dr. Yoji Akao. Its contents are quality, function and deployment.Quality – satisfactory performance of a product that is suitable for its intended purpose. Function – in products, it also means the “Requirements” usually specifies the most important attributes of the requested system. Deployment – a process-mapping tool used to articulate the steps of a given process including concept, design, manufacture and service. TRIZ presents a systematic approach for finding inventive solutions. Inventive principles and the matrix of contradictions and Substance-field analysis are the two tools for solving inventive problems. However, TRIZ might be solving inventive problems but the customer needs might not be given due consideration. In conclusion, this research integrates TRIZ and QFD methodologies considering customer requirements as well as invention principles for hub design in bicycles.

Any types of organizations are like organisms, which need to be infused with new elements continuously. Otherwise, the organization may either lead to annihilation or fail to achieve its goal of existence. Therefore, constant innovation turns to be necessary in any kinds of organizations. Innovation is the chief factor which stimulates the organization to grow and develop. Yet, what factor motivates the organization to innovate? The accumulation of intellectual capital, the important factor, should be paid much attention. Intellectual capital means the sums of intangible assets that the whole organization possesses. Intellectual capital not only becomes effective in enhancing the value of the organization but also keeps it competitive. As for academic organizations, under attack of declining birthrate, if they can accumulate and integrate their intellectual capital, and then innovate the organizations to draw more students to attend, the management of schools will stay in a stable condition. This study, regarding intellectual capital as independent variables and organization innovation as dependent variables, discusses the relationship between intellectual capital and organizational innovation. The questionnaire survey, taking stratified samples, aims at the junior high school teachers in Changhua County. 520 copies of questionnaires, which are answered for collecting information, including 457 copies of valid questionnaires, reach 87.8% valid response rate. Next, analyze the received information with descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient and hierarchical regression analysis. Master's thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/100265.

Full text
Abstract:
This research aims to identify the challenges of regulation and supervision of fintechs in the European Union in the financial markets, a reality stimulated by technological innovation that is revolutionizing financial innovation. The discovery of new ways to regulate new financial products and services puts at risk two essential goals for their survival: the first is the possibility of financial innovation eliminating financial intermediation, jeopardizing one of the main sources of profitability for banks; and the second is the risk that the State, as a regulatory body, will have reduced access to the records of financial transactions. The approach was developed within the scope of regulatory law, framing the financial crisis of 2008, and the technological revolution and financial innovation that affects the financial system. The new realities such as fintechs, bitcoins and blockchains, are changing the paradigms of regulation and supervision, whose answer can be given through Disruptive Regulation, a concept that brings together regtechs and supetechs as a new way of looking at the technological revolution and the financial innovation. The focus on regulating disruptive technologies that stimulate innovation in the financial markets brings with them new regulatory alternatives such as Regulatory Sandboxes, Innovation Hubs, accelerators and incubators for startups dedicated to the experimentation process (application, preparation, testing and evaluation). These new realities also pose complex challenges for regulators, such as the high risk of hacking, the risk of information asymmetry and the difficulty of accountability in case of errors in machines, software and humans. This set of regulatory alternatives supported by suptechs and regtechs is called Disruptive Regulation.

Abstract As the creator and leader of French Impressionist music, Debussy’s music had a great influence in 20th century. Debussy, who would not like to be bound to obey the rules, was hardly persuaded to the traditional music theory and forms. He was convinced that “there is no theory. You have only to listen. Pleasure is law.” Out of his works, the cello sonata was finished in 1915, his last year. Due to the outbreak of World WarⅡin 1914 and his suffering from cancer, Debussy had to confront with both internal and external stress. His philosophy of life, even the philosophy of music changed. However, even in such an all time low of life, he had a beau ideal in these works. He said “I have begun again to write a little music, mostly so as not to forget it completely, very little for my own satisfaction…. It seems to me there is an opportunity of reverting, not to a too narrow and contemporary French tradition, but to the real true one which one can place immediately after Rameau – just when it was beginning to be lost!” His expectancy and effort uplifted the character and value of the work. On the design of the sonata, Debussy used “sonata form” and tried to emphasize the excellent French heritage, such as Rameau and Couprin’s music of the 17th century. However, he also took his compositional materials from other sources. For example, we can feel the Italian theater “Pierrot fachê avec la lune” in this sonata dramatically. In compositional technique, we find not only magnificent effects and colors, but also the logical construction and its profound expression. Compared with the music theory of Arnold Schoenberg, we can feel more animation and fantasy in Debussy’s music. On the other hand, different from the heavy texture of German tradition, we can feel more elegant and simple impression in his work. Experiencing the change of life and age, alternation of generations, Debussy recorded the story of world by music.
