Full textThere are different opinions about how to link business environment and organization. Some say the outside world is not something the organization should care about, while others on the contrary, argue that the outside world is an important influencing factor for every organization. The purpose of this licentiate thesis is to investigate the interaction between the organization, external signals from the outside world and innovation, and to illustrate these relationships in a comprehensive model. The model follows the external signal’s path through the organization, from identifying which signals that at all are observed in the organization, over how the organization creates meaning around these signals, to how it handles interpretation, strategy and decisions concerning the external signals. The model also includes a link to innovation and innovation capacity. Little to the side in the model, there is ”The Unexpected," which, referring to John Dewey, is a reminder about the risk in trying to capture the outside world in a model. The organization's construction- how it is organized - is described in the model with the terms history, structure and culture. How it handles external signals are expressed in three dimensions: how the organization recognizes external signal, how it creates meaning around this signal, and what conclusions the organization draws in terms of learning. The four components of innovation in the model are category, origin, orientation and character. The model also includes an attempt to formulate how the management of external signals can be expressed in the capacity for innovation. Used here are the two theories Blue Ocean Strategy and First Mover Advantage as a measure of innovativeness. The capacity for innovation either targets the well-known in the form of red oceans or the unknown in terms of blue oceans. The innovative capacity can also lead the organization either to be a First Mover or a Second Mover. The model is illustrated by four examples - Google, Apple, Microsoft and Virgin. All of them are successful companies and well known for their innovative capacity. The result is that it has been possible to apply the model to the studied companies and then catch some connections between the organization and its capacity for innovation, with particular focus on external signals. Another conclusion is that innovation hardly can be regarded in isolation, detached from the outside world, but must be seen in its outside world context.

Full textOver the last couple of years an increased interest of learning in organizations and competence development has been noticed. Many researchers and decitionmakers are of the opinion that this is an important part of productivity, competitiveness and innovation. (Kock, Gill & Ellström, 2008) Innovations are usually the fruit of several individuals creative ability, their cooperation, experiences and their additional knowledge (Leonard & Swap, 1999). 96.3% of the companies in Sweden are small business.(www.scb.se) Small business and entrepreneurs are seen as especially importance of employment and the growth of the economy in spite of many initiatives there is a lack of solutions in the society that are well adjusted to the specific needs and prerequisites (http://www.regeringen.se). This essay is a qualitative study consisting of semi structured interviews with the purpose of exanimating a project of competence development with the aim of supporting small business development through enabling interaction and competence development. Hansson (2005) describes competence development as an objective for providing. Dalin (1997) and Hansson (2005) describe interaction as an aspect of competence. On order for small business to be able to thrive external relations with other businesses with the ability to support the company in its development should be developed. In order for small businesses to be more successful and profitable external resources are needed. (Street & Ann-Frances, 2007) During the interviews it was revealed that the respondents experiences of interaction during the course of the project and the experience of the possibilities for future interaction was parted. Some of the respondents expresses that the interaction to some extent has strengthened existing bonds of interaction by enlarged insight in the other companies business. According to half of the respondents the specific activities of competence development witch the respondent was in need of is experienced as the most important contribution to the business.

Full textTo be competitive, firms must constantly introduce new and better products and services. Thus itis crucial for firms to create an organization in which both incremental and radical innovationsoccur. In an organizational context, innovation capability refers to the capability to integrate thekey resources and capabilities of the organization in a way that stimulates innovation in products, services and processes. Consequently, firms must support the underlying processes and practicesthat aim at improving the innovation capability. To provide the necessary support for innovationactivities, firms must also consider the conditions of each specific team, as the support neededdepends on the situation in the respective teams. This study was performed as a Master thesis project at The Royal Institute of Technology. It isbased on an empirical study performed at a large Swedish firm during 2012. The purpose of thestudy was to investigate and map how teams within the firm perceive their innovation capability. The sample consisted of around 200 respondents in 13 different teams. The teams were from twodifferent product units, and were located in five different countries. To collect data about theteams included in the survey, a web-based survey tool was developed. In the survey, respondentsgot to choose three capabilities they perceived as strengths of the team, and three they perceivedas gaps critical to address. Complementary interviews were also held with members of thestudied teams to further discuss the survey results. By using this approach, the perceivedstrengths and critical gaps of each team was identified. The results show that at an overall level there are great similarities between the different teams,as some capabilities were perceived as top three strengths in a majority of the teams. Looking atthe critical gaps the responses were more evenly distributed, although some capabilities stillscored significantly higher than others. No major differences were found between differentproduct units or countries. One important finding was that within each team, there were greatdifferences in how the team members perceived their team’s strengths and critical gaps. Thisimplicates that the teams need to become more consistent on these issues, as an effective changework depends on a mutual understanding of the needs of the team.

Full textResearch questions: How are participants' creativity affected when agile methods are used in practice? How do agile methods affect the ability to innovate? Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate how a small IT company works to increase creativity by working according to the agile approach, in order to be able to affect the capacity for innovation. Method: This study is based on a case study. The company is a small IT consulting company that works with system development. The company has 15 employees and works according to the agile approach and they have two Scrum teams. This work is based on the qualitative method with influences of a deductive approach, since the study is mainly based on semi-structured interviews and observations. Conclusions: The conclusions are that the agile methods affect creativity by increasing the participants' motivation. The agile way of working affects the creativity of the employees, as it is free to pick the tasks that you want in each sprint, it contributes to increase both motivation and curiosity. Another conclusion is that the agile methods affects the participants' creativity as it gives the employees more freedom to plan their work and gives them the opportunity to solve their task in their own way, for example by testing new technologies. The agile methods affect the participants' creativity in such a way that it can reduce the stress from outside the workgroup itself. This is because it is the product owner who has the main contact with the end customer. The agile way of working affects the ability to innovate because it is constantly entering new tasks that the working group has to solve, and the tasks are very different to each other, it contributes to increased dynamism and challenge. An interesting conclusion was that the product owners created an unconscious challenge linked to the employees' tasks, as the employees felt that the requirement specifications that they received were difficult to understand. The final conclusion is that the agile methods created freedom for the employees to be able to prioritize themselves among their tasks and choose how to solve the tasks.

Full textNowadays, it is well known that it is highly important to involve the customers in the product development in order to better understand the needs of the market, increase the relations to customers and maximize the value creation of the products. This will result in a higher innovation capacity for the organization. This case study intends to answer the research questions, how to allocate the customer information flow in a systematic approach at a medium size high technology company in order to increase the innovation capacity. The research methodology consists of three different parts including pre study, social network analysis, and internal and external benchmarking. The pre study consists of 21 interviews internally in the organization and the social network analysis is based on a survey, which 49 individuals have answered. The benchmarking involves six employees from another department and two interviews with external companies within the same business. The results indicate that the amount of customer interactions with external parties must be decreased in order to systematically receive and maintain customer information. In order to increase the information flow within the organization a specific department, that have daily contacts with almost all departments, should act as a transmitting function as they would connect marketing with research and development. Furthermore, the customer information should be included in the daily working process as it is easier for the employees to embrace and jointly utilize this information.

Full textAim: Developing an strong brand is a way for companies to stand out of the crowd, which today is necessary to conquer on the competitive market. The brand value is one of the most important assets in annual reports, but there are difficult to estimate an reliable value. It depends on the fact that the brand value is affected by few different factors, including innovativ-eness. Due to the thesis background the purpose enunciate: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate it there is a correlation between companies brand value and innovation capacity. Method: We have done a secondary data analysis, with help from the database Retriever. The combination of faint information and lack of quality in Retrievers capacity it contributed that we had to use semi-structured interviews as an complement to full follow the purpose. The paper per- form at Stockholm Nasdaq OMX and included de 250 largest companies that at least had one registered brand value. Companies with inapplicable data for the purpose of the study was elimi- nated. As a final the data was analysed by dint of linear regression, Pearsons correlation analysis, and interviews thru ”well-grounded theory”. Result & Conclusion: The result of the study indicated that there are positive relation between brand value and R&D. The complemented interviews contributed that the authors observed diff- erences between practitioners and researchers on the perception of between essential accounting information and the opportunities to provide principles to circumvent the recommendations. The conclusion of the study is that companies brand value are positively affected by the innovativeness. Suggestions for future research: Due to the lack of resources and qualitative database it wasn’t possible to satisfy the purpose of the study. Consequently our suggestion for future research will contain the recommendation to do the study on another stock exchange. Contribute of the thesis: Mainly this study contributes to illuminate the fact of accounting information: companies doesn't inform sufficient information to increase knowledge for there own business innovativeness and immaterial assets. Which can be seen as a problem. Second contribute comprises that there is, hence small or implicit, relation between brand value and their companies innovativeness at the researched companies. Consequently the results gets difficult to draw general conclusion from.

Full textThe last decade the Swedish defense sector has seen drastic cuts in research and development. Compared with ten years ago, only about one third of these funds remains. At the same time, rapid military technology development and security policy changes directly affect demands on the national defense's operational capability. In parallel with this, there is strong development and change in the surrounding society, rapid technological development and emergence of a knowledge and information society. Competitiveness in this environment requires continuous development, and refinement of the strategies and methods of innovation. This paper aims to critically examine and generate insight into the defense area's model and identify possible contributions to a future model for developing innovative military capabilities. These findings are derived from qualitative deep interviews and visions on how the innovation system should be organized. Findings are presented as a collection of theories and key concepts, as well as recommendations on elements relevant to increased efficacy in a future model. These are organized in five main areas: procurement strategy, knowledge and network, strength areas, new working methods and key competencies. In conclusion, the results of this study indicate an unrealized potential for increased innovation efficiency in the Swedish defense sector.

Full textPurpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent of goodwill that can be explained by the capacity for innovation in Swedish listed companies. Introduction: Goodwill is an intangible asset and occurs in connection with acquisitions. In recent years, the record received a great importance and it gives also an expression of the future economic benefits. Goodwill is difficult to define because the item may contain, for example, customer relationships, trademarks, good reputation, etc. In the current situation, innovation is an important factor for companies and has great significance for economic growth and innovation capacity of firms should have an impact on the goodwill value of the entry. Method: A quantitative study has been made in this paper. Through the database Retriever data was collected from the largest listed companies. An elimination was made for those companies that had not provided data that was required for the study. Through the statistical program Minitab was two regression models were conducted and analyzed. Conclusion: Our conclusion is that the two dimensions of innovation studied, patents and research and development, Large Cap both have a positive explainationary power on goodwill for Large Cap. For Mid Cap there no significant effect appears. For Small Cap patent has a weak impact on goodwill, while research and development showed no impact.

Full textBakgrund
Background
Gazelles are high growth Small Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) that constantly are creating new job-opportunities and contributing positively to the Swedish economy. In order to achieve competitive advantage and growth for SMEs, several authors argue that a focus on differentiation is most suitable, which is a strategic approach mainly underpinned by innovative ability. However, when competitive advantage leads to rapid growth certain growing pains occur. Thus, when SMEs are growing rapidly, what happens to their innovative ability and further how does this affect their long-term growth?
Purpose
The purpose of this thesis is to explore how rapid growth in SMEs affects their ability to attain long-term growth.
Method
In order to fulfil the purpose, a comparison analysis has been conducted based on a holistic multi-case study. The cases included five manufacturing SMEs in Jönköping County, of which all have been appointed the Gazelle-award issued by the Swedish financial newspaper Dagens Industri. This award is given to companies that have doubled its turnover in three years, while simultaneously having positive growth and a stable economical situation.
Conclusion
After analysing the empirical results with appropriate theories, some main conclusions could be reached. The study could demonstrate that the growing pains, often emerging in SMEs experiencing rapid growth, influence the organization to adapt itself to the increasing complexity and resource constraints in a way that has a negative affect on the their innovative ability. There was further some support that this in turn had a negative affect on SMEs ability to grow in a long-term per-spective.

Full textBased on a changing environment, more organizations have realized that they cant act independently of the environment. The changes are often described in terms of more intense competition, shorter life cycles for products and services and constant technology development. Internet and digital transformation has also created a transition to the digital economy which transforms assumptions for most business models. Intensified competition, technological development and increased mobility of knowledge, has resulted in that more organizations need to analyze the way they organize and manage innovation efforts to increase the capacity for innovation. In view of the changing rules of the game, it should be questioned whether internal innovation processes are the most successful strategy to generate conditions for increased innovation capabilities. In line with this, a clear trend in recent years points out that more organizations explore and demand knowledge from a wider range of sources than before. This is illustrated by how more organizations utilize knowledge flows from networks beyond the boundaries of their own organization. Innovation processes that capture knowledge flows based on a networking perspective gives new potential benefits for the innovation capabilities. One of the possible benefits is described as the combination of internal and external knowledge. However, the shift from internal to more open innovation processes, means that the innovation management must change. With open innovation processes, new challenges has been discovered, largely based on the supportive idea of involving more individuals. A central challenge is to control open innovation processes without formal authority over all individuals. Thus, the purpose of this study has been to identify and analyze what characterizes open innovation processes and governance aspects in order to increase the innovation capabilities. Based on a literature study, a management concept was established to analyze, explain and develop concepts in open innovation processes. The management concept can be described as an umbrella under which the author brings together practical aspects that can be utilized in different ways to manage an open innovation process with the aim of increasing innovation capabilities. The empirical part comprises a case study containing nine interviews of the innovation management within Lindholmen Science Park. It is an international environment for research and innovation. The result demonstrates the importance of flexible governance, focusing on constant compliance with the external context. In addition, the management of seemingly incompatible paradoxes is poached, where the importance of dealing with different opposites is found important. In addition, the result underline the importance of leaders who releases the inherent power of innovation by curiosity for learning and a sustained focus on establishing relationships to build trust.

Full textAbstract Title: Honeybee leadership in e-commerce businesses in Sweden - a study of sustainable leadership Level: Student thesis, final assignment for bachelor’s degree in business administration Author: Cecilia Rosen and Amarvir Singh Supervisor: Kristina Mickelsson and Agneta Sundström Date: 2019 - January Aim: The aim of the study is to gain further knowledge of how business leaders in e-commerce businesses in Sweden handle sustainability through honeybee leadership, aimed at innovation, environmental and social responsibility, and through investment in employees. Method: This study uses a qualitative method based on the hermeneutic approach. A comparative design is applied to compare the two selected e-commerce companies where 10 semi-structured interviews have been conducted with five managers and five employees. Respondents have received their own anonymity code in order not to be traceable back to them. Empirics: The interviews have been coded into 4 different themes with 3 categories developed from each theme to present the result of the study in a simpler way. These themes have received a separate headline to follow more easily, what has been found in the study. Conclusion: The study shows that business leaders in the e-commerce industry work consistently with innovation and personnel investments, but not as distinctive when it comes to environmental and social responsibility. There is a need to develop the common environmental goals of the organizations and to convey these in a better way within their organizations. One of the companies also showed the need to develop their ability to train their staff as they lack a strong educational culture. Contribution of the thesis: The study has contributed to an increased understanding of how individual principles in honeybee leadership can be studied within organizations. Our study has also contributed to an insight on how e-commerce managers invest in their staff by recruiting and working with staff who can take responsibility. Suggestions for future research: To strengthen our study, we recommend it to be replicated and compared with other e-commerce companies based on the same three principles. A more comprehensive study of e-commerce companies that include the majority, or all principles than those we have chosen, would also be useful to get an overall picture of how the principles affect each other and how e-commerce companies work with honeybee leadership. Key words: Honeybee Leadership, Sustainable Leadership, E-commerce, Innovation,Investment in Personnel, Environment and Social Responsibility.

Full textIn the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic project teams have been forced to workonline, in what could be described as "digital rooms". This has drastically decreased the possibilites for informal meetings. This study aims to answer how a transition from physical meetings to digital ones affects the informal knowledge sharing and what effect that might have on productivity. Further the study also aims to explore the effect on proffessional relationsship, as experienced by members of project teams. Following an inductive approach, ten semi structured interviews with project leaders, active in Sweden, was conducted. Thematic analysis was performed and four themes observed: /Change in focus/, /business as usual/, /meetings, meetings, meetings/, /spontanity can not be planned/, and /relations and culture/. Study found that the lack of physical meetings results in lesser opportunities for relationship building and informal sharing of information. Something that on a longer timescale could hamper the ability to find synergic effects and cooperations, which in turn could result in lessened creative abilities. Results also show that meetings aimed towards creativity and innovation is more challenging if held digitally instead of physically. Meeting overview, missunderstandings and informal communication all becomes more challenging, which limits the interchange in between the project teams. Respondents will likely continue to work, partly, on distance also after the restrictions have been lifted, due to positive effects on the work-leisure balance. For organisations these changes carries new possibilities but also new challenges: geographical and logistic hinders have been removed, but to uphold company culture and productivity over time have become more onerous.
