Mouzakitis, Alexandros. "Innovative solutions for automotive embedded software development : innovation report." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2016. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/93362/.

Full text
Abstract:
Embedded software is shaping and influencing our world and it is unimaginable to realise day to day life without it. Since the introduction of the first Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in the 1970s, the automotive industry has seen a substantial increase of embedded software in vehicles. The use of embedded software in the automotive industry has led to a significant increase in the number and complexity of different vehicle systems, features and functions. This level of complexity drives premium vehicles with no fewer than 70 ECUs interconnected by more than five on-board network systems such as Controller Area Network (CAN), Local Interconnect Network (LIN), Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST), FlexRay and Ethernet. In a typical automotive development process, the main challenge for the engineers is to uncover as many failure modes and/or software defects as possible during the early stages of the vehicle programme. During the early phases of the development, failure modes and/or software defects are difficult to uncover but easy and inexpensive to fix. During the latter phases of the development, failure modes and/or software defects are easy to uncover since the final product has been built. At this stage, failure modes and/or software defects are hard and expensive to fix as changes required in the embedded software. The aim of this research was to develop and deploy innovative solutions in order to shift failure modes and/or software defects detection early in automotive product development. The initial research work was conducted through an analysis of failure modes and/or software defects found during a typical Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) vehicle programme development. This preliminary work also then focused on supplier base capability for automotive embedded software development. The research findings from the internal and external analysis, together with the literature review on best practice have driven the development of four solutions. A process called Model-based Product Engineering (MBPE) was created and deployed within JLR. The MBPE process brings together model-based development and other development processes in a standardised form. A new generic Design Verification Interface (DVI) for test exchange and traceability across all MBPE process levels was developed. The generic DVI eliminates or reduces redundant efforts of re-writing test cases and test scripts for automated testing. A semi-formal Standardised Design Verification Method (SDVM) was developed for defining test cases for all vehicle systems in a common template. The SDVM presents test cases as machine readable data and allows auto-generation of test scripts suitable for automated testing. An end-to-end solution called Platform Independent Test System was developed in order to integrate the MBPE, DVI and SDVM solutions. The proposed PITS supports all levels of system abstraction from the test case definition phase to the execution of automated scripts in both offline and real-time test environments. Evaluation results have demonstrated a significant shift in the detection of failure modes and/or software defects towards the early phases of the product development. An early detection of more than 50% of failure modes and/or software defects was achieved. This is a substantial change from the previous state where embedded software validation was conducted only after supplier software release. Furthermore, results have shown a 40% reduction in engineering effort for test scripts creation and a five to tenfold reduction in engineering time for automated testing.

Abstract:
Photovoltaic processing is one of the processes that have significance in semiconductor process line. It is complicated due to the no. of elements involved that directly or indirectly affect the processing and final yield. So mathematically or empirically we can’t say assertively about the results specially related with diffusion, antireflective coating and impurity poisoning. Here I have experimented and collected data on the mono-crystal silicon wafers with varying properties and outputs. Then by using neural network with available experimental data output required can be estimated which is further tested by the test data for authenticity. One can say that it’s a kind of process simulation with varying input of raw wafers to get desired yield of photovoltaic mono-crystal cells.

Balbuena, Valenzuela Juan Pablo. "Development of innovative silicon radiation detectors." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/96361.

Full text
Abstract:
Silicon radiation detectors fabricated at the IMB-CNM (CSIC) Clean Room facilities using the most innovative techniques in detector technology are presented in this thesis. TCAD simulation comprises an important part in this work as becomes an essential tool to achieve exhaustive performance information of modelled detectors prior their fabrication and subsequent electrical characterization. Radiation tolerance is also investigated in this work using TCAD simulations through the potential and electric field distributions, leakage current and capacitance characteristics and the response of the detectors to the pass of different particles for charge collection efficiencies. Silicon detectors investigated in this thesis were developed for specific projects but also for applications in experiments which can benefit from their improved characteristics, as described in Chapter 1. Double-sided double type columns 3D (3D-DDTC) detectors have been developed under the NEWATLASPIXEL project in the framework of the CERN RD50 collaboration for the ATLAS Inner Detector upgrades and the introduction of a new pixel layer called Insertable B-Layer. The radiation tolerance of slim-edge (“edgeless”) detectors, whose current terminating structure reduces the insensitive area of detectors to 50 μm, for close-to-beam experiments like the TOTEM experiment at HL-LHC, have been simulated under the EU TOSTER project. Ultra-thin 3D detectors, which combine 3D detector technology and thin membrane fabrication process, are also studied in this work. They provide an alternative to the present Neutral Particle Analyzers at the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) in the ions detection for plasma diagnosis, and they are also being used in neutron detection experiments after being covered with any layer containing 10B whose high capture cross-section of thermal neutrons allows their detection through the emitted alpha. Finally, active-edge detectors have been studied for applications in X-ray beam positioning, X-ray sensors for beamstops and detectors with pad, microstrip and Medipix2 designs for research purposes.

Costa, Camilla Olga. "Leveraging knowledge for innovative brand development." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/17444.

Full text
Abstract:
Assignment (MComm)--University of Stellenbosch, 2006.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: It has become evident that the knowledge-driven, innovation economy supercedes the industrial era at the beginning of the 21st century. Within this environment characterized by innovation and the emphasis on brand owning companies, successful organizations will be those that transform information into valuecreating knowledge and dynamically leverage the knowledge to innovate and capture additional customer value. In contrast to an emphasis on traditional tangible assets to explain organizational success, recent strategic management literature focuses on intangible resources, viz. intellectual capital. Knowledgeempowered customers are driving many innovations in this environment, and consequently, value innovation shifts relatively from the supply chain to the demand chain in business value systems, with focus on brand equity development. The encompassing challenge that companies face in this new environment is how to identify and leverage all sources of value. These important assets include, among other factors, brands and the knowledge residing within the consumers’ mind. Due to the significant shift towards knowledge-networking and outsourcing of many organizational activities, it is increasingly incumbent to incorporate and integrate knowledge residing outside the borders of an organization. However, the potential value of brand building efforts will not be realized unless proper knowledge management practices, systems, approaches and tools are put into place within the organization to capitalize on the concept of knowledge-enhanced brand equity. Accordingly, firms require a framework or model to illustrate the leveraging of knowledge for innovative brand development and management. This study provides an in-depth overview and synthesis of knowledge and brand management literature concerned with the symbiotic relationship between the utilization of knowledge and innovative brand development. A preliminary conceptual model to demonstrate the relationship between brand equity and knowledge-based is proposed.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die industriële era van die 20ste eeu is deur ‘n kennisgedrewe, innoverende ekonomie verbreed vanaf die begin van die 21ste eeu.

Abstract:
Thesis: S.M. in Real Estate Development, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Program in Real Estate Development in conjunction with the Center for Real Estate, 2018.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 59-61).<br>The real estate industry is very conservative and risk averse, yet innovation is critical to its long term viability. While innovation does occur in real estate development, it is often discouraged and not the standard approach. This thesis focuses on understanding the motivations and obstacles facing real estate developers who decide to pursue innovative products, processes and systems. The study explores the challenges of developing co-living, a recent innovative real estate product in order to understand why this product is taking off across the country, and how it has been implemented in Boston and New York City. Insight into the innovation processes are derived from site visits and multiple interviews with professionals from different sectors of real estate: developers, consultants and regulatory authorities. The thesis concludes by describing five principles of innovative real estate development, relating to: Market Demand, Vision, Adoption, External Forces and X-Factors. While these principles are derived from experience in creating co-living projects, they are illustrative and important for the innovation process in all types of real estate products.<br>by David S.
