Mouzakitis, Alexandros. "Innovative solutions for automotive embedded software development : innovation report." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2016. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/93362/.

Full text
Abstract:
Embedded software is shaping and influencing our world and it is unimaginable to realise day to day life without it. Since the introduction of the first Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in the 1970s, the automotive industry has seen a substantial increase of embedded software in vehicles. The use of embedded software in the automotive industry has led to a significant increase in the number and complexity of different vehicle systems, features and functions. This level of complexity drives premium vehicles with no fewer than 70 ECUs interconnected by more than five on-board network systems such as Controller Area Network (CAN), Local Interconnect Network (LIN), Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST), FlexRay and Ethernet. In a typical automotive development process, the main challenge for the engineers is to uncover as many failure modes and/or software defects as possible during the early stages of the vehicle programme. During the early phases of the development, failure modes and/or software defects are difficult to uncover but easy and inexpensive to fix. During the latter phases of the development, failure modes and/or software defects are easy to uncover since the final product has been built. At this stage, failure modes and/or software defects are hard and expensive to fix as changes required in the embedded software. The aim of this research was to develop and deploy innovative solutions in order to shift failure modes and/or software defects detection early in automotive product development. The initial research work was conducted through an analysis of failure modes and/or software defects found during a typical Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) vehicle programme development. This preliminary work also then focused on supplier base capability for automotive embedded software development. The research findings from the internal and external analysis, together with the literature review on best practice have driven the development of four solutions. A process called Model-based Product Engineering (MBPE) was created and deployed within JLR. The MBPE process brings together model-based development and other development processes in a standardised form. A new generic Design Verification Interface (DVI) for test exchange and traceability across all MBPE process levels was developed. The generic DVI eliminates or reduces redundant efforts of re-writing test cases and test scripts for automated testing. A semi-formal Standardised Design Verification Method (SDVM) was developed for defining test cases for all vehicle systems in a common template. The SDVM presents test cases as machine readable data and allows auto-generation of test scripts suitable for automated testing. An end-to-end solution called Platform Independent Test System was developed in order to integrate the MBPE, DVI and SDVM solutions. The proposed PITS supports all levels of system abstraction from the test case definition phase to the execution of automated scripts in both offline and real-time test environments. Evaluation results have demonstrated a significant shift in the detection of failure modes and/or software defects towards the early phases of the product development. An early detection of more than 50% of failure modes and/or software defects was achieved. This is a substantial change from the previous state where embedded software validation was conducted only after supplier software release. Furthermore, results have shown a 40% reduction in engineering effort for test scripts creation and a five to tenfold reduction in engineering time for automated testing.

Abstract:
Photovoltaic processing is one of the processes that have significance in semiconductor process line. It is complicated due to the no. of elements involved that directly or indirectly affect the processing and final yield. So mathematically or empirically we can’t say assertively about the results specially related with diffusion, antireflective coating and impurity poisoning. Here I have experimented and collected data on the mono-crystal silicon wafers with varying properties and outputs. Then by using neural network with available experimental data output required can be estimated which is further tested by the test data for authenticity. One can say that it’s a kind of process simulation with varying input of raw wafers to get desired yield of photovoltaic mono-crystal cells.

Balbuena, Valenzuela Juan Pablo. "Development of innovative silicon radiation detectors." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/96361.

Full text
Abstract:
Silicon radiation detectors fabricated at the IMB-CNM (CSIC) Clean Room facilities using the most innovative techniques in detector technology are presented in this thesis. TCAD simulation comprises an important part in this work as becomes an essential tool to achieve exhaustive performance information of modelled detectors prior their fabrication and subsequent electrical characterization. Radiation tolerance is also investigated in this work using TCAD simulations through the potential and electric field distributions, leakage current and capacitance characteristics and the response of the detectors to the pass of different particles for charge collection efficiencies. Silicon detectors investigated in this thesis were developed for specific projects but also for applications in experiments which can benefit from their improved characteristics, as described in Chapter 1. Double-sided double type columns 3D (3D-DDTC) detectors have been developed under the NEWATLASPIXEL project in the framework of the CERN RD50 collaboration for the ATLAS Inner Detector upgrades and the introduction of a new pixel layer called Insertable B-Layer. The radiation tolerance of slim-edge (“edgeless”) detectors, whose current terminating structure reduces the insensitive area of detectors to 50 μm, for close-to-beam experiments like the TOTEM experiment at HL-LHC, have been simulated under the EU TOSTER project. Ultra-thin 3D detectors, which combine 3D detector technology and thin membrane fabrication process, are also studied in this work. They provide an alternative to the present Neutral Particle Analyzers at the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) in the ions detection for plasma diagnosis, and they are also being used in neutron detection experiments after being covered with any layer containing 10B whose high capture cross-section of thermal neutrons allows their detection through the emitted alpha. Finally, active-edge detectors have been studied for applications in X-ray beam positioning, X-ray sensors for beamstops and detectors with pad, microstrip and Medipix2 designs for research purposes.

Costa, Camilla Olga. "Leveraging knowledge for innovative brand development." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/17444.

Full text
Abstract:
Assignment (MComm)--University of Stellenbosch, 2006.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: It has become evident that the knowledge-driven, innovation economy supercedes the industrial era at the beginning of the 21st century. Within this environment characterized by innovation and the emphasis on brand owning companies, successful organizations will be those that transform information into valuecreating knowledge and dynamically leverage the knowledge to innovate and capture additional customer value. In contrast to an emphasis on traditional tangible assets to explain organizational success, recent strategic management literature focuses on intangible resources, viz. intellectual capital. Knowledgeempowered customers are driving many innovations in this environment, and consequently, value innovation shifts relatively from the supply chain to the demand chain in business value systems, with focus on brand equity development. The encompassing challenge that companies face in this new environment is how to identify and leverage all sources of value. These important assets include, among other factors, brands and the knowledge residing within the consumers’ mind. Due to the significant shift towards knowledge-networking and outsourcing of many organizational activities, it is increasingly incumbent to incorporate and integrate knowledge residing outside the borders of an organization. However, the potential value of brand building efforts will not be realized unless proper knowledge management practices, systems, approaches and tools are put into place within the organization to capitalize on the concept of knowledge-enhanced brand equity. Accordingly, firms require a framework or model to illustrate the leveraging of knowledge for innovative brand development and management. This study provides an in-depth overview and synthesis of knowledge and brand management literature concerned with the symbiotic relationship between the utilization of knowledge and innovative brand development. A preliminary conceptual model to demonstrate the relationship between brand equity and knowledge-based is proposed.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die industriële era van die 20ste eeu is deur ‘n kennisgedrewe, innoverende ekonomie verbreed vanaf die begin van die 21ste eeu.

While innovation does occur in real estate development, it is often discouraged and not the standard approach. This thesis focuses on understanding the motivations and obstacles facing real estate developers who decide to pursue innovative products, processes and systems. The study explores the challenges of developing co-living, a recent innovative real estate product in order to understand why this product is taking off across the country, and how it has been implemented in Boston and New York City. Insight into the innovation processes are derived from site visits and multiple interviews with professionals from different sectors of real estate: developers, consultants and regulatory authorities. The thesis concludes by describing five principles of innovative real estate development, relating to: Market Demand, Vision, Adoption, External Forces and X-Factors. While these principles are derived from experience in creating co-living projects, they are illustrative and important for the innovation process in all types of real estate products.<br>by David S. Laube, Reto. "Development of an Innovative Quickdraw for Climbers." Thesis, KTH, Maskinkonstruktion (Inst.), 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-170807.

Full text
Abstract:
This master thesis is a product development project conducted with Mammut Sports Group AGin Seon, Switzerland. The goal of this thesis was to reconsider the concept of quickdraws, which are used for lead climbing, and to come up with a new system. Mammut Sports Group AG founded in 1862 is today a leading supplier for alpine climbing and outdoor equipment, its products are well-known for their high quality, functionality and being innovative. Quickdraws follow mainly the same system since decades, two karabiners connected through a sling, one karabiner to clip to the protection on the wall, the other to clip in the rope. The two karabiners barely differ except sometimes the gate. A new concept should take safety, weight, price and usability into account. Extensive investigation of how quickdraws are used was conducted to spark ideas for the new concepts. Literature, standards and climbing organization reports of accidents and usage advices were studied. Market and patent research was conducted to investigate what has been already released and tried out on sell. Further, the approach of Netnography, Shadowing and Storyboard was applied to get user insights. The developed ring-karabiner side presents a safer gate against unintended gate-opening compare to traditional karabiners, and with this it should increase safety. Through the new shape a fixation to the sling is possible and even necessary, compare to traditional quickdraws where the sling requires being free movable around the karabiner protection side. This can make it possible to fulfill some climber’s additional need to reach protections from slightly further distance and increase safety. Production price and weight are estimated to keep equal with traditional karabiners. Some users recognize the new product with positive enthusiasm indicating that there is a potential market. To summarize, with help of different ideation and concept development methods, a totally new quickdraw ring karabiner-concept of clipping into the protection on the wall was developed. In loops the concept was validated and developed further to meet the requirements. Moreover, using method for concept-testing it was important to investigate how the potential user would consider the new model.<br>Detta examensarbete är ett produktutvecklingsprojekt som genomförts i samarbete med Mammut Sports Group AG i Seon, Schweiz.

Abstract:
Children around the world are routinely being treated with medicines that have not been designed and developed for this specific patient population, putting them at risk of inaccurate dosing and side effects. In the view of these considerations, the PhD research project was addressed to the use of specific formulation strategies for the development of innovative paediatric dosage forms. The research has been structured in three case studies, concerning different oral formulations: mucoadhesive buccal films, dispersible granules and complex suspensions. The first part of the research investigated the use of polymeric films for systemic absorption of ondansetron hydrochloride through the buccal mucosa. Several mixtures of hydrophilic polymers were evaluated to optimize the hydration ability of such films, the residence time at the site of application and the drug permeation profile. The second approach was focused on the development of fast dispersible granules for oral administration of praziquantel. Granules represent a flexible dosage form for preschool-aged children that can be given as dispersion in beverages or administered with food, improving the palatability of the formulations and the adherence to therapy. The last part of the work was carried out at the University of Birmingham and faced one of the central challenge associated with paediatric treatment: the taste masking of molecules characterized by bitter taste. To achieve this purpose, polyelectrolyte complexes, composed of whey protein and pectin, and able to encapsulate active substances were developed. Caffeine was selected as model drug for its particularly bitter taste. Finally, the results presented in this thesis demonstrated that specific formulation strategies can be used to overcome the predominant issues related to paediatric administration of medicines, in order to guarantee the complete adherence of children to the therapy and thus the success of the treatment.

Preterm infants are sensitive to incorrect levels of oxygen in the blood. Thus, the oxygen levels need to be monitored continuously. The most commonly used method today has several limitations and therefore constant blood tests has to be taken. Neosense Technologies AB has developed an electrochemical sensor that measures blood oxygen tension continuously and in real time. This thesis aims to develop a prototype algorithm to derive cardiac output based on dynamic changes in inhaled fraction of oxygen and the corresponding change in arterial oxygen tension using the electrochemical sensor. Two measurements were done using the sensor to measure the step response of partial pressure of oxygen to obtain data to develop the algorithm. Using the obtained data, two algorithms were developed and from the validation analysis one of the algorithms were chosen due to significant better results.<br>För tidigt födda barn är känsliga för felaktiga syrgasnivåer i blodet. Ahmad, Khalis Abdul Rahman. "Time underestimation in innovative educational projects in Iraq." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1990. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10018421/.

Abstract:
Time is a highly significant element in the complex process of educational change. It bears on all the components of innovative projects. It influences decisions to embark on a particular change model or a strategy. And ultimately time affects adoption decisions. But in spite of such significance, world-wide experience of introducing innovative programmes shows frequent occurrence of time underestimation. This study attempts to explain the reasons behind the phenomenon of time underestimation in educational change. In the context of the Iraqi educational system, it appears that there are a number of reasons behind time underestimation in planning and implementing innovations. These can be grouped under two categories: economic and non-economic. The former explains the underestimation of time as a deliberate effort made by people in order to reduce the apparent cost of a lengthy process. The latter interprets the phenomenon by organizational, structural, or psychological factors. These include incomplete and weak situational analysis prior to introducing innovative projects, lack of coordination pertaining to prevalent work modes, predominance of a top-down change model the outcome of which is the absence of a feeling of ownership, lack of skilled and well-trained personnel, lack of clear-cut objectives and distinct features of projects, lack of dependable criteria for estimating the cost of projects, fear of accountability on the part of both the planners and the implementing bodies, lack of systematic and well-timed evaluation, and lack of interest or poor motivation. Currently, economic considerations of time in the education sector are gaining ascendency. The opportunity cost of time makes a strong case for an efficient utilization pattern of behaviour pertaining to time. And it appears imperative to base time estimation primarily on the cost that this entails.

Abstract:
Une solution logicielle temps réel implémentée sur une carte GPU a été proposée et testée afin de réduire encore le temps de calcul et permettre l'emploi de la méthode en clinique<br>Ultrasound is widely used for blood flow imaging because of the considerable advantages for the clinician, in terms of performance, costs, portability, and ease of use, and for the patient, in terms of safety and rapid checkup. The undesired limitations of conventional methods (1-D estimations and low frame-rate) are widely overtaken by new vector approaches that offer detailed descriptions of the flow for a more accurate diagnosis of cardiovascular system diseases. This PhD project concerns the development of novel methods for blood flow imaging. After studying the state-of-the-art in the field, a few approaches have been examined in depth up to their experimental validation, both in technical and clinical environments, on a powerful ultrasound research platform (ULA-OP). Real-time novel vector methods implemented on ULA-OP were compared to standard Doppler methods in a clinical study. The results attest the benefits of the vector methods in terms of accuracy and repeatability. Plane-wave transmissions were exploited to improve the transverse oscillation imaging method. Double oscillating fields were produced in large regions and exploited for the vectorial description of blood flow at high frame rates. Blood flow maps were obtained by plane waves coupled to a novel velocity estimation algorithm operating in the frequency domain. The new method was demonstrated capable of high accuracy and reduced computational load by simulations and experiments (also in vivo). The investigation of blood flow inside the common carotid artery has revealed the hemodynamic details with unprecedented quality. A software solution implemented on a graphic processing unit (GPU) board was suggested and tested to reduce the computational time and support the clinical employment of the method

Abstract:
Modified-release oral drug delivery dosage forms are widely used in the pharmaceutical field to overcome all the potential issues imposed by the physiological variabilities of the gastrointestinal tract as well as to maintain drug concentrations within the therapeutic window. In the market, they are available only as solid dosage forms such as capsules or tablets. The development of a liquid oral dosage form with modified-release properties has been keenly awaited. This form could increase the compliance of patients with a swallowing impairment (i.e. paediatric, older or critically ill patients) and, consequently, the efficacy of the therapeutic treatment. In this study, a new technology has been developed that consists of multi-layered particles suspended extemporaneously in a syrup. Omeprazole and budesonide have been employed as model drugs. The coating procedure was optimized to obtain a yield of minimum 90% w/w and a median diameter below 500 µm. Once the final suspension is prepared extemporaneously, it presents sufficient stability to guarantee the administration of multiple doses filled into a syrup bottle and kept for a limited storage time at room temperature (e.g. up to 10 doses to be administered within 10 days).<br>Doctorat en Sciences biomédicales et pharmaceutiques (Pharmacie)<br>info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Gregori, Manuel <1981&gt. "Development of innovative catalysts for the hydrodechlorination to fluoroethers." Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2014. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/6323/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this work the hydrodechlorination of CF3OCFClCF2Cl to produce unsaturated CF3OCF=CF2 was studied over a series of supported metal catalysts. Currently this molecule is produced from the precursor CF3OCFClCF2Cl by dechlorination with zinc powder. An important cost on the economic and environmental balance is represents by the large amount of ZnCl2 produced and to be disposed of. A new approach, based on gas-phase hydrodechlorination over supported catalysts can lead to a new sustainable process. During the feasibility step of this project, substantially two kind of materials were studied: metals supported over activated carbon and Pd/Cu species supported over MCM-41 mesoporous silica. Observed catalytic performances were strongly dependent on the metal and support used. All carbon-supported Ru, Pd, and bimetallic catalysts are fairly active and yielded the target product CF3OCF=CF2, the higher selectivity being obtained with ruthenium- and palladium-based materials. Nevertheless, Ru-based catalysts showed poor stability and this deactivation may be attributed to the deposition of chlorinated organic species blocking the active sites. On the other hand, palladium-containing catalysts showed high stability. Ru/Pd and Pd/Cu bimetallic catalysts exhibited long-term selectivity and stability, highlighting the possibility for these materials to be employed in the CF3OCF=CF2 production process. During the second part of this thesis, a series of bimetallic meso-structured Pd/Cu MCM-41 catalysts were studies to overcome possible mass transfer limitations. The materials were obtained by different synthesis methods. The incorporation of Pd and Cu during MCM-41 synthesis, did not destroy the typical hexagonal array and ordered pore system of MCM-41. However, the calcination for the removal of the template provoked significant segregation of oxides. The impregnation leads to pore-occlusion and formation of Cu particles and large bimetallic PdCu species. Larger metal particles leads to lower CF3OCFClCF2Cl conversion, while the monometallic particles can decrease the selectivity to CF3OCF=CF2, fostering the dehalogenation to CF3OCH=CF2.

Abstract:
Innovation has been powering industrial development for 200 years. Today, in times of social and environmental pressures, it is even more needed to support the transition towards a more sustainable society. Multinational corporations are potential systemic change agents by their global presence and impact magnitude on economics. However, a combination of short-termism and technological inertia rather favours incremental innovation. Meanwhile, some smaller companies have quickly integrated the value of doing ‘better’ rather than doing ‘less bad’, making innovation go hand-in-hand with sustainable development. Therefore, acquisitions represent an opportunity to spread a solution to addressing sustainability challenges faster, but the corporate decision-makers need concise, constructive guidelines for selecting and integrating these external opportunities. This thesis describes how a Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD) helps to identify the gaps in the current practices and supports the creation of guidelines for corporations acquiring innovative companies in order to move towards sustainability.<br><p>Benoît Guyot +33614449525 Katarina Wikström +46766324440 Seyedeh Nafiseh Mousavi Rad +989374873439</p>

The thesis is divided into five chapters followed by a section of general conclusions. Chapter 1 begins with a general introduction to the concepts of biosensors and point-of-care biosensing. Then, it focuses on one of the most successful point-of-care tests: the lateral flow test (LFA). Key aspects of the assay, such as components and reagents, manufacturing and operating procedures are covered in depth. The chapter continues with a review of the current challenges LFA has faced and the most relevant improvements reported in recent years. Chapter 2 briefly describes the objectives that motivated this work. Chapter 3 introduces a new detection platform (PEB) that combines the key features of a lateral flow assay, the most widely used point-of-care test, with the capabilities of electrophoresis sample treatment. In particular, the ability of PEB to separate different types of particles and detect human IgG antibodies in untreated blood samples is demonstrated. Finally, to make the platform applicable at the point of care, PEB is combined with a smartphone that controls the electrophoresis and reads the generated optical signal. Chapter 4 explains a simple, low-cost strategy to improve the analytical performance of LFAs. By using soluble wax barriers, nanoparticles temporarily accumulate at the top of the detection line (TL). This extended internal incubation step promotes immunocomplex formation, generating improved sensitivity and signal compared to conventional LFA detection for human IgG (H-IgG). Chapter 5 presents a point-of-care detection platform consisting of a microtube and two pieces of fiberglass. The detection principle is based on Förster resonance energy transfer using gold nanoclusters as a signal indicator and antibody-conjugated gold nanoparticles as a quencher. The platform has been validated for the detection of Escherichia coli O157: H7 in river and tap water, demonstrating high sensitivity.

Abstract:
<p> This dissertation takes on the debate of whether environmental economic regulations hamper or incentivize firm performance, aside from their objectives of pollutant reductions. Research has shown mixed results regarding this matter. This dissertation proposes that the reason for these mixed results is the omission of the capacity of individual firms to assimilate and respond to these regulations, regarded here as signals from the economic and institutional environment. These signals from the environment come in the form of technological change as environmental economic regulations impose limits to the products, processes or services, which are pollutant intensive, or provide pollutant reduction technologies. Therefore the capacity that firms must possess in order to respond to these signals from the environment must be technology related. It is proposed here that the innovative capability can allow for firms to respond, in a performance increasing way, to these signals from the environment, as it entails the capacity of developing or adopting new technologies. </p><p> The theoretical approach that this dissertation follows is to frame the economic environmental regulations under a classical regulatory framework, with the diverse mechanisms such as taxes, caps-and-quotas, and subsidies which are regarded as economic environmental regulations, and as signals external to the firm, which act upon it. The innovative capability will be addressed under the resource-based view and dynamic capabilities approach, as this research is under a strategic management perspective. Here the innovative capability is regarded as part of a firm's dynamic capabilities, and it is the means through which firms can assimilate and respond to changes in the environment. Performance relates to the outcomes of the interaction between environmental economic regulations and the innovative capability, and it is expected that the previously mentioned interaction has an effect over the firm, whether it can be beneficial or not, regarding market access or expansion, or earnings/revenues. In the present research project performance is taken as the efficiency rate, and the earnings/revenues of a project of the Clean Development Mechanism or CDM under the Kyoto Protocol (UNFCCC 2013). The institutional environment will be addressed from North's (1990) new institutional economics perspective of institutional theory, which highlights the capability for firms being moderated or mediated by the external environment and vice versa.</p><p> To operationalize environmental economic regulations this dissertation will reach out to the aforementioned Kyoto protocol, an international agreement for emissions reduction. These emissions reductions are achieved through various mechanisms that allow for different entities to reduce their said emissions, separated by what the Protocol has called commitment countries of the Annex I; and non-Annex I countries with no quantitative commitments. The clean development mechanism (CDM) is one of these mechanisms and it is targeted at firms located in countries of the Kyoto protocol that have no reduction commitments, all of which are emerging economies. The CDM provides firms with pollutant reduction technologies that allow them to transform their pollutants into less harmful emissions, while yielding carbon credits with which they can further trade. These technologies differ in their degree of innovativeness, and each project chooses which technology it will be implementing. The innovative capability dimension will be operationalized as the capacity of firms to select and implement projects with high innovativeness levels. Performance will be operationalized as the particular efficiency rate of each CDM project included in the sample. This is a ratio between the expected and the real number of carbon credits yielded by each CDM project. It also might be reflected in economic variables such as the revenues generated by the project which is the difference between the investment of the project and the revenues obtained from the sale of the carbon credits. The CDM allows for analyzing a single environmental economic regulation across different countries, regarded here as different institutional environments. The effect of these different institutional environments on CDM projects will be assessed by analyzing the effect of their different characteristics, such as country's abatement potential, institutional capacity, investment climate, and geographical or regional characteristics. Obaidi, Hadel Ibraheem Ahmad. "Development of innovative pothole repair materials using induction heating technology." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2018. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/55281/.

Full text
Abstract:
Millions are spent by authorities to maintain and repair the world's potholes. In addition to the direct costs, they can also lead to damaged vehicles and an accelerated deterioration of the road system. The potholes create traffic risks that lead to the daily loss of hundreds of work hours for drivers and passengers. Many road crews are not familiar with the proper materials and methods for pothole repair. Correct selection of pothole patching materials and proper application of repair procedures can greatly increase the longevity of pothole repairs, lead to fewer driver frustrations, and lower road maintenance budgets. The present study aims to develop innovative materials to repair of potholes by using induction heating technology. Three innovative patching materials to repair potholes are proposed, assessed and compared with conventional pothole patching materials. The first material is a combination of a prefabricated asphalt tile and a bonding layer that can be placed into a sanitised pothole and bonded by applying electromagnetic induction heating. The second material involves using prefabricated asphalt pellets to directly fill a pothole and then heated by induction. The third material comprises (1) prefabrication of binder pellets containing bitumen and steel wool that has been coated with a shell to avoid them sticking to each other; (2) the development of a mobile induction heating mixer that can mix the binder pellets with cold aggregate on-site before directly filling a pothole and compacting the mixture. In this research, their tensile and shear strength properties were assessed and demonstrated by repairing simulated potholes on testing slabs and subjected them to wheel tracking tests. The innovative patching materials showed excellent durability higher than a road repaired with cold mix asphalt. Furthermore, the innovative patching materials have been evaluated from economic and environmental standpoints and compared results with conventional hot mix and cold mix. These proposed patching materials have been applied by different raw materials and procedures, and have importance of properties that performed by laboratory tests. Based on the results of loaded wheel test, the service life of each patching materials has been calculated. An inventory was prepared to help quantify the energy requirements, material inputs, and emissions produced during production of raw materials, prefabrication of each product and their final installation. The requisite data was obtained from various sources in the literature. Two maintenance hypothesis were considered. The results showed that three innovative patching materials may be more sustainable and could reduce cost, energy usage and CO2 emissions over time in agreement with hypothesis 1. However, they may cause to increase the economic and environmental impacts over time in agreement with hypothesis 2.

Abstract:
Thesis: S.M. in Real Estate Development, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Program in Real Estate Development in conjunction with the Center for Real Estate, 2016.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 60-61).<br>The current practice of building is a slow-moving, fragmented, and conflicted industry that operates on a variety of scales, emotions, professions and realities. The current practice of making buildings has the potential for innovation to align interests among otherwise adverse parties. Buildings are complex and dynamic physical realities, operating as economic, social, and emotional constructs in the urban environment. Buildings also constitute the single unifying element upon which all stakeholders in the process place their expectations. Financial, spatial, emotional, and civic success hangs in the balance of a zero-sum process. The background of the development process is presented, focusing on the current practices of real estate development and architecture and highlighting the critical relationship between each entity. Following the description of the underlying relationships and processes, three case studies of actual practices are presented as innovative and unique alternatives to the current process of building. Each case study outlines a potential integration and convergence of real estate development and architectural design, providing a new viewpoint from which to analyze current practice. Five principles of excellent development emerge from the case studies as decisive benchmarks to analyze the building process. Following initial background information and explicit understanding of current processes and potential innovative alternatives, this thesis proposes a new practice model of integrated real estate development and architectural design, the Convergent Model, which seeks to simplify the building process and align economic, social, and cultural goals within a truly interdisciplinary team of professionals. The process is a potential solution to the compounded and interconnected issues of current practice and is more likely to meet the five principles of excellent development. Finally, the Convergent Model is put into practice through a hypothetical demonstration project. The demonstration project consists of a comparison between a Baseline and a Proposal, two developments on the same site. The Baseline utilizes traditional practices and the Proposal employs the Convergent Model. The development processes are compared side by side and evaluated as an illustrative depiction of the potential for a new development process that is more capable of creating excellent buildings.<br>by Jason Fisher.<br>S.M. in Real Estate Development

The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.<br>Current Integrated Development Environments running on Personal Digital Assistants lack features that address the challenges in human-computer interaction with the PDA. The slow input techniques and small screen display of PDAs contribute to the overall difficulty of software development on the PDA. These problems discourage developers from using the PDA as a programming platform. An innovative IDE for the Pocket PC PDA is designed to facilitate fast prototyping and ease of development. The graphical user interface of the IDE overcomes the slow input techniques and small screen display of the PDA. To take advantage of the capabilities of PDA, a novel design which integrates PDA personal information management capabilities with the IDE is explored. The programming language for the IDE is Ruby, a powerful general-purpose object-oriented scripting language. The PocketRuby IDE is a powerful and efficient programming development environment on the PDA.<br>by Jack C. Kwok.<br>M.Eng.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2011.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 145-149).<br>The field of microfluidics has powerful applications in low-cost healthcare diagnostics, DNA analysis, and fuel cells, among others. As the field moves towards commercialization, the ability to robustly manufacture these devices at low cost is becoming more important. One of the many challenges in microfluidic manufacturing is the reliable sealing of the microfluidic chips once the channels have been generated. This work was an investigation of innovative ways to robustly heat the substrate-cover plate interface of a microfluidic device for the purpose of bonding and sealing the microfluidic channels. An extensive literature review revealed the benefits of interfacial heating, and both simulations and experimental investigations were used to evaluate a few different methods. Ultimately, a unique method was established that uses light to provide both the bonding energy and the illumination for an in-process vision system for real-time viewing and control of the bonding process. The process results in the generation of a homogenous and optically clear bond, and preliminary tests show that when properly controlled, a bond with minimal microchannel deformation can be created.<br>by Michelle E. Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Mechanical Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2010<br>Many companies are currently focusing on how to stay innovative, how to innovate and how to create an innovation climate in their companies. Why is innovation vital to companies? New Product Development (NPD) can be a key factor in this regard. Companies believe that NPD is their life blood; it can be the better way to survive firmly and be more competitive. In addition, the strategy of how to manage NPD process effectively and efficiently is becoming a powerful way of achieving a competitive edge. As Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play a significant role in South African economic development, it is critical for companies especially (SMEs) to seek an ideal way to manage innovation productively. However, to be innovative is not easy for any organization and it should be managed effectively. The effective management of innovation and NPD in SMEs is investigated in this study. Innovation and NPD has already become the key drivers of sustainability and competitiveness for many companies especially SMEs. Innovation and NPD as the main subjects that are carefully studied, discussed and understood in larger corporations and multinational enterprises. It would appear that the same cannot always be said when it comes to SMEs.

Abstract:
Along with the general requirement of continuously increasing efficiency of hydrostatic drivetrains, variable displacement machines are of major concern in research and development. To this effect, the whole machine performance is mainly dependent of the displacement variation system (DVS) performance. A lot of work to this topic focusses on the controller and actuator level. The aim of this paper is to offer a more fundamental view on DVS by giving a focus to the basic hydro-mechanical principles.

Goodchild, Gavin Todd Herbert. "Development of an Innovative Solar Absorber." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1974/7468.

Full text
Abstract:
Solar thermal systems have great potential to replace or reduce the dependence of conventional fossil fuel based heating technologies required for space and water heating. Specifically solar domestic hot water systems can contribute 50-75% of the annual thermal load. To date residential users have been slow to purchase and install systems, primarily due to the large monetary investment required to purchase and install a system. Recent innovations in materials design and manufacturing techniques, offer opportunities for the development of absorber plate designs that have the potential to reduce cost, increase efficiency and reduce payback periods. Consequently, this design study was conducted in conjunction with industrial partners to develop an improved absorber based on roll bond manufacturing that can be produced at reduced cost with comparable or greater thermal efficiency.<br>Thesis (Master, Mechanical and Materials Engineering) -- Queen's University, 2012-09-13 12:36:58.588

Lin, Yung-tse, and 林永澤. "Development of Innovative Underwater Cleaning Robot." Thesis, 2010. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/87841542825557909991.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣科技大學<br>機械工程系<br>98<br>Nowadays underwater cleaning of glass walls of the underwater exhibition or large fish tanks is mainly done by manual work. The existing underwater cleaning robots, with symmetrical structures, need several motors and complicated control systems to make them moving in a straight line. In this research, an innovative triangular-frame concept was adopted to design the underwater cleaning robot in order to clean flat wall and to meet low cost and low energy consumption purposes. The triangular robot had three curved shell and cleaning cylinders at the corners. Each shell had a DC motor attached to it, and one motor was placed in the center for Z-axis movement. With this structure, when two corners contact the flat glass wall, only one motor was needed to move the robot along the wall and push the robot toward the wall at the same time. The friction between the wall and the cleaning cylinders at two corners could improve the cleaning effect in the wiped area. When the robot reached the tank corner, the sensor made with strain gauge would activate the other motor to turn the robot for the next wall cleaning. After finishing each wall, the Z-axis motor can adjust the robot to different height for further cleaning. Simple and economical Darlington IC and relay were utilized to control motors. The system was designed to be controlled automatically or manually. The overall size of the robot is 270x250x120mm. Prototype components were manufactured by OBJET EDEN 330 Rapid Prototype system and rapid tooling approach. The underwater tests showed that the robot could successfully clean the walls one by one and move to the next vertical position for next-layer cleaning.
