Abstract:
Prior studies suggest that with elastically supplied inputs free entry may lead to an inefficiently high number of firms in equilibrium. Under input scarcity, however, the welfare loss from free entry is reduced. Further, free entry may increase use of high-quality inputs, as oligopolistic firms underuse these inputs when entry is constrained. We assess these predictions by examining how the 1996 repeal of certificate-of-need (CON ) legislation in Pennsylvania affected the market for cardiac surgery in the state. We show that entry led to a redistribution of surgeries to higher quality surgeon

The focus of this study was to analyze the allocative efficiency of the capsicum cropping system under tunnels. The data is collected from those farmers that were cultivating the capsicum crops under the tunnels in Pakistan. Cultivation of the crops under tunnels has a rising trend in Pakistan. To achieve the best possible output with a minimum cost of newly opted farm technology can be beneficial if farmers have proper skill and know-how regarding the application of balanced use of inputs. The sample size was around 150 capsicum farms. The Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) was used to examin

It is well known in the Data Envelopment Analysis literature that proper variable selection is necessary for the reliable measurement of efficiency. Omitting production relevant variables and/or including irrelevant variables will lead to biased measurement. It is also known that the sample size needs to be large relative to the number of inputs and outputs to prevent classification of efficiency by default. In some empirical settings the number of potential relevant variables is large. Careful selection of an appropriate set of variables is necessary for reliable efficiency measurement. This

Abstract Modern food production is the subject of much scrutiny, especially with regard to potential environmental impact and sustainability. To accurately assess impact, both costs and benefits should be evaluated, and inputs and outputs should be standardized. Emphasis is commonly placed on efficiency when comparing production of various animal proteins. Efficiency of a process can be described as a ratio. This ratio is simply: 1) input to output or 2) output to input. The relationship of input to output such as feed input to gain (i.e., body weight, carcass weight, or retail cut weight) out

Every type of agricultural production is a burden for the natural environment. The paper’s objective is to assess the energy use efficiency, GHG emissions, and provide an economic analysis of buckwheat production for Central Europe (Poland). The analysis and comparison involved two production systems: low-input and high-input ones. The experiment involved three varieties of buckwheat, Panda, Volma, and Mancan. The yields for analysis were obtained from the field experiment which was set up in 3k-p fractional design was applied in two replications in which at the same time five factors were tes

This article estimates technical and environmental efficiencies using the stochastic frontier analysis with panel data of twenty-two main apple production provinces in China during 1992–2014. Results show that the environmental efficiency for pesticide input alone has lower mean value of 0.337 than environmental efficiency for the two environmentally detrimental inputs, pesticide and chemical fertilizer, which is 0.782. Furthermore, all efficiency scores have decreasing trends over time. Loess Plateau is more environmentally efficient than the Bohai bay region. Results of output elasticities s

Assessment results of renewable energy supply in agriculture and forestry are often questionable because 1. the methodology does not describe the nature dependent conditions of agricultural production, 2. there is no standard system boundary, 3. thermodynamic laws are violated and/or ignored, 4. direct and embodied energy is mixed, 5. the mainstream life cycle analysis (LCA) takes downstream and upstream inputs arbitrarily into consideration, depending on the research objectives and the research-funding agency. Thus, the calculation results neglect a wide range of specific energy input figures

The paper is aimed to analyse the efficacy of government expenditure on secondary education in Purulia district of West- Bengal, India. Efficacy relates the input or the output to the final objectives of the analysis to be achieved, i.e. the outcome. Education facility is mainly a mixed good which is partly excludable and partly rivalry. India has been suffering from poverty and illiteracy problem for decades. Illiteracy and low level of education is a factor for widespread poverty in India. Among the education system, secondary education plays a crucial role to enhance the human development l
