Lööf, Jenny. "An Inquisitive Gaze: Exploring the Male Gaze and the Portrayal of Gender in Dragon Age: Inquisition." Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Engelska institutionen, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-117976.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper provides an account of how a normative male gaze is produced and upheld even in a video game famed for its inclusive nature, Dragon Age: Inquisition. The analysis originates in content studies concerning the portrayal of gender in video games in relation to in-game physical gender portrayal. It is followed by a contextualization of specific video sequences and certain game mechanics in relation to Laura Mulvey’s feminist film theory about the Male Gaze. Mulvey’s film theory approach, while useful as an intellectual tool, is not developed to be applied to video games and thus it is also necessary to consider any implications related to the interactivity of the game. As characters are subjected to a gendered male gaze in relation to both their physical appearance and attributes they are made to uphold the normative status quo. The Gaze is evident in how characters are portrayed, how the main character becomes a default male character regardless of actual gender and in the construction of women as something other. But most importantly, in the actual game mechanics through which all characters become objects for the player to use either in combat or to own in the guise of offering romance to the narrative.

Abstract:

Ciappara, Frans. "Society and the Inquisition in Malta 1743-1798." Thesis, Durham University, 1998. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/4672/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis falls into two main sections. It endeavours to analyse the major aspects of Maltese society in the second half of the eighteenth century as they emerge from a close scrutiny of the Archives of the Inquisition in Malta. The approach is mainly that of the ethnologist, a social history written 'from below'. The ultimate purpose was to try to arrive at as clear and accurate a picture of the Maltese mentalite as the archives permitted. Unfortunately, the Archives of the Inquisition in Malta have hardly ever been seriously studied by the social historian. Their richness and diversity not only cast enormous insight into the mental habits and frame of mind of a wide cross-section of Maltese society; they even shed sufficient light on a wide range of the social life of the Maltese. The subject is also approached from the point of view of the legal historian. The Inquisition was a Tribunal of Faith set up to stop the onslaught of Protestantism, as well as to reform the superstitious accretions to popular religion practised by the remaining part of the Catholic Church. The thesis examines the events leading to the charge and possibly arrest of the accused. Most of the reports were self-accusations and those arrested were taken into custody only after much deliberation. If the Inquisitors did make use of torture the accused was assisted by the defence counsel and produced his own witnesses. No instance of death sentences are encountered with in the second half of the eighteenth century and those found guilty were kindly dealt with, the Inquisitors being only after their conversion.

Skinner, Suzanne E. "Crypto-Jewish Identity in the Inquisition of Mexico City." DigitalCommons@USU, 2019. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/7534.

Abstract:
This thesis studies identity among a group of Roman Catholic converts and accused heretics in Mexico City, called Crypto-Jews. The areas of identity that were examined in depth were, religious identity, gender identity, and racial identity. The records that exist for Crypto-Jews in Mexico City are limited but can be found among the records of the Holy Office of the Inquisition. In order to study the documents of the Office of the Inquisition in Mexico City, I had to travel to the University of California, Berkeley’s Bancroft Library. I was supported in this endeavor by the History Department at Utah State University during the Spring semester of 2017. While there, I found primary sources written by the Holy Office of the Inquisition that contained the Inquisition trial records of many accused Crypto-Jews. This thesis uses five Inquisition documents from the trials of Manuel de Lucena, Isabel de Carvajal, Leonor de Carvajal, Margarita Moreira, and Antonia Núñez. Other primary sources include a translated copy of Luis de Carvajal’s memoir. Through the study of these Inquisition documents, I have concluded that Crypto-Jewish identity was an amalgam of many cultural influences including Spanish, colonial, Roman Catholic, Jewish, and early medieval. The combination of these cultural influences was processed by Crypto-Jews to form a unique identity. This identity was specific to the people whose records I was able to study and is a unique contribution to the historical study of Crypto-Jews.

Abstract:
The spanish inquisition disposed of many law courts. One of these has attracted our attention, with specific particularities, and perhaps unrivalled ones : "the logrono tribunal". But it seems to us that it is a too much restrictive term, so we have renamed it the "basco castillan tribunal". The study brings owerall the "relaciones de causas" whitch we receiwed from 1538 - 1700, for more than 5 300 "proces". This search is based on various offences which were pursued by the inquisition, essentialy from the different communities judget by this court. Abstract:

Abstract:
History of the repression of sexual behavior by the aragonese inquisition between 1560 and 1700 in the three secretariats of barcelona, valencia and saragossa. This study and all the statistics used to illustrate it are based on inquisitorial and manuscript sources : first, the files containing the relaciones de causas, and second, the extensive reports of certain trials which were kept for valencia. The four sexual deviations that form the object of this study are: solicitation by clerics, bigamy, sodomy, and bestiality. We studied the basis for repression before the beginning of the sixteenth century and the reasons why sodomy was entrusted to the inquisition. After the distribution of repression among four legally distinct offenses (seduction by priests, double marriage, homosexual practices, sodomy of women, zoophilia), we consider the sociological aspects of these human groups to fix the real aims of the holy office. In a second part, we study the activity of the tribunal in the proceedings and in the sentences and penalties inflicted upon such sexual offenses. The repercussion of this repression on the attitude of men, witnesses, and the whole society. In a third part, we analize in a positive way the contents of the relaciones de causas in order to establish a map of the distribution of marginal sexuality in town and in the country, and to insist on the importance of language. Finally we try to characterize the manifestations of exploitation of young men and the phenomenon of substitution in zoophilia. The last aspect concerned the link beween violence and the sexual behaviors

Abstract:
From its establishment by royal decree in 1610 until its abolition in 1821, the Inquisition tribunal of Cartagena de Indias sought to stamp out heresy and maintain Catholic orthodoxy among the inhabitants of the territory of New Granada. This thesis examines the activities of the tribunal during the first half of the seventeenth century, specifically as they relate to its persecution of the crypto-Jews under its jurisdiction. While the surviving evidence demonstrates a significant crypto-Jewish presence in Cartagena in the 1600s, and even though the authority of this tribunal extended far beyond its immediate surroundings, very few crypto-Jews were ever prosecuted by this court during this time. This thesis explores the social, economic and political dynamics explaining a change in policy that led to a rise in the number of Inquisition trials against the crypto-Jewish population in the first half of the seventeenth century. This thesis argues that Spanish imperial politics coupled with socio-economic factors inherent in the colonial system, explains why inquisitorial persecution increased in this period.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Currently, many researches deal with the Tribunal of the Holy Inquisition of the Iberian Peninsula and Brazil. This dissertation proposal approaches the action of the Tribunal of the Holy Inquisition against new-Christians, accused of practicing Judaism in Portugal, through Inquisition processes of a converted family, painfully reached by the Inquisition in the second half of the XVIIth century. After the forced conversion of the Jews in Portugal in 1497, and the Inquisition implantation in 1536, the new-Christians (descending from the converted Jews) started to suffer the cruelest persecution by the Roman Catholic Church. Thousands of families were denounced, imprisoned, persecuted and condemned to some kind of penalty. In this master dissertation we have studied the Inquisition processes of the Gaspar da Costa de Mesquita family. According to the analyzed documents, this family integrated a relevant financial and intellectual Portuguese group, with many members dealing with commerce, finances, and the intellectual life in Lisbon. The Head of this family was a new-Christian, bank owner, married for the second time, with seven children. In 1682, he was confined to the Lisbon Inquisition prison, having all his belongings confiscated by the Holy Church. His daughter Michaela was imprisoned in 1683 when she was a 16th years old girl. The sons José da Costa and Theotonio da Costa escaped prison and evaded to Sao Paulo Village. At the time, the first family members were taken to prison and accused of Judaism in Portugal. Some years later, after being denounced in Lisbon, they were sentenced to prison and in October 9th, 1684, both sons were imprisoned and extradited to Lisbon, where they were indicted and left in auto-de-fé. The new-Christian or marrano issue is essentially an Iberian problem, which the Holy Tribunal of the Inquisition in Spain and Portugal, gave special attention to this ethnic group in society, transforming it in its main victim. Trying to escape from this situation, many new Christians moved to Brazil hoping to be free and start a new life. The colony was an option to escape from the Holy Roman Church persecution, instituted in the Portuguese territory. The migratory trends, which started with the colonization, have continued even when legal restrictions were imputed by the king. São Paulo, the refuge village chosen by José da Costa and Theotonio da Costa was a difficult place to access, away from the main development centers at the colony and life was extremely painful. The conflicts between the Jesuits and the colonizers were common place, especially on the XVIth and XVIIth centuries, as consequence of the predominant system on the plateau, the bandeirismo. The brothers José da Costa and Theotonio da Costa worked in Sao Paulo as peasants, possibly with small pieces of land, as confirmed by the formal statements in their processes. Even as a region hard to reach, they were caught by the Inquisition hands of the Church. The Inquisition net of informers were based of agents, both in the metropolis and in the colony, together with the denounces atmosphere at the Iberian society, making feasible to reach people indicted by the Holy Church Inquisition outside the kingdom.

Abstract:

Fulton, Joseph Michael. "Counter-Reformation politics and the Inquisition in the works of Fray Luis de Leon." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/283926.

Full text
Abstract:
Fray Luis de Leon was incarcerated for nearly five years by the Spanish Inquisition, on the basis of charges brought against him by antagonistic colleagues who disagreed with his scholarly approach. Through a systematic consideration of his writings in light of the sociohistorical climate that gave rise to disputes between him and his detractors, it is evident that a number of themes run through Fray Luis' prose production which can be related directly to his experience as an inmate in the Inquisition's cells. These topoi, found throughout the Salmantine friar's prose, are present also in his poetry. Therefore, by analyzing those prose passages that have a direct bearing on his trial before the Inquisition and by relating those passages to his poetry, we shall gain access to unique avenues of interpretation. The results will offer new insights into Fray Luis' poetry that are not readily apparent through other methods of analysis. This study will afford us an opportunity to see Fray Luis and his works in great detail from a perspective that has not yet been explored.

Plakotos, Georgios. "The Venetian Inquisition and aspects of 'otherness' : Judaizers, Muslim and Christian converts (16th-17th century)." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2004. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7223/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Thesis explores the Venetian Inquisition's handling of cases involving crypto-Jewish, crypto-Muslim practices and some cases where people had lapsed into Islamic ways, especially when in remoter parts of the Venetian empire or within the Ottoman empire and who sought reconciliation with the Catholic Church. Despite their differences, the offences involved the practice of dissimulation and connected with Venice's position as a transit city, since for most offenders, Venice was one among their various destinations in their peregrinations in the Mediterranean. The Thesis draws on the printed transcripts of cases involving Judaism, but also unpublished archival material in both the State archive, and the Patriarchal archive. The discussion, with close textual analysis focuses on the lengthy testimonies given before the Inquisition by a variety of people, who appeared as accusers and witnesses, and examines what they perceived as alleged crypto-Jewish and crypto-Muslim practices in the atmosphere of growing concern about religious deviance in late Renaissance Venice. It analyses the tribunal's approach to the accusations and offences, and changing patterns of practice, paying close attention to the Inquisitors' questioning strategies. As most offenders had undergone conversion, this Thesis analyses how they fashioned their identity in front of the Inquisitors who, on the basis of Church and State regulations, insisted on unambiguous religious identities. The Thesis delineates the convergences and divergences in the handling of these offences, and challenges some perceptions of power relations between accusers and accused. While following these investigations, much is revealed about communities in cosmopolitan Venice, their locations and inter-actions, and how Christian and non-Christians perceived, and mis-perceived, each other. Insights are also provided into movements of individuals - as for commercial or mercenary military purposes - in and between remoter parts of the Venetian empire and the Ottoman empire.

Abstract:
Despite the existence of many restrictive emigration laws, the influx of New Christians of Jewish origin to America was noticeable from the begining of the Conquest and acceleratted after the unification of the Iberian kingdoms in 1580. As in Spain and Portugal, and notwithstanding the surveillance of the Inquisition, a large number of these conversos continued to adhere to crypto-Jewish practices, a phenomenon known as Marranism. This thesis attempts to describe the ways in which American Marranos structured their societies and organised the familial, religious and commercial networks they maintained with Spain, Africa and the Jewish communities of Europe. Part one, centred on the acitivies of the Inquisition in America and the Iberian peninsula, follows the exodus of groups of Portufuese Marranos first to Seville and then to the New World, and examines the expansion of their commercial networks up to the offensive launched by the Inquisition between 1635 and 1649. The final chapter is devoted to the devlopment of religious practices. Part two focuses on the participation of these New Christians in the slave trade and the dominant role of the port of Cartagena de Indias as a reception and distribution centre for the American slave market

Hill, Derek Arthur. "Change in the fourteenth-century inquisition seen through Bernard Gui's and Nicholas Eymerich's inquisitors' manuals." Thesis, Birkbeck (University of London), 2016. http://bbktheses.da.ulcc.ac.uk/183/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how the inquisitio hereticæ pravitatis (the ‘inquisition’) changed in the 14th century. It does so through a comparison of Gui’s Practica inquisitionis heretice pravitatis, and Eymerich’s Directorium inquisitorum, which are the fullest accounts of inquisitorial practice in the fourteenth century. It therefore concentrates on the Languedoc and Aragon, although wider evidence is used where possible. It points out several areas of change between these two points in the evolution of the inquisition: a) Gui’s Practica was a conservative response to a changing heresy threat, which adapted the existing methods of the successful Languedoc inquisition to meet new threats like the Beguins, Pseudo-Apostles and magicians. Eymerich, who came some 50 years later, was a systematizer and an innovator. He defined the inquisition in such a way that any heterodox thinking could be found to be heresy by an inquisitor. He also innovated in seeing the inquisition’s jurisdiction as extending over Jews (not just Jews converted to Christianity and their helpers), blasphemers and magicians. In this he was following secular trends where magicians were increasingly perceived as a problem and blasphemy was considered a serious offence; and in Aragon there had long been efforts amongst Dominicans to get more jurisdiction over Jews. b) Gui worked closely with the secular power and was cautious in his approach to the business of inquisition. Eymerich was more distant from the secular power and envisaged a more autonomous inquisition. c) Although Gui used torture on occasions, Eymerich made torture the default mechanism for resolving nearly all suspected cases of heresy. d) Gui’s inquisition was still a temporary expedient for defined heresies. Eymerich saw the inquisition as a permanent and institutional part of the Church, which would protect it against all doctrinal assault. In this he saw diabolic influences as playing an important role.
