Full textThis research was conducted on the basis of "implication professional mode" as suggested by Christine Mias. The thesis exposed here tends to assert that the manner with which the three elements Sense/meaning ; Reference Points, Feeling of Control are requested within the professional sphere induces an "own way of being" which influences the actor's professional representations which thereby can be numerous in the same area. The survey was conducted in the field of integration through economic activity (I. A. E. : Insertion par l'Activité Economique). People working in this activity are in a paradoxical position between : economic balance – social take in charge of people on the verge of exclusion. Through this choice of area, we intended to verify that the actors' attitude and approach of their mission were impacted by these two opposite ideological references. The results confirm that context, implication mode and professionnal representations work in a systemic relation

Full textWhat factors come into play and are critical in a new teacher’s drop out? If teacher attrition is not a new phenomenon, it is now more than ever a major issue that should provoke reflection for the sake of the profession and the educational community. The purpose of this qualitative study is to define and understand the multidimensionality of the teacher attrition phenomenon. To answer this question, a vast review of the literature was conducted about the professional induction of teachers. Several aspects related to career entry were then explored: the factors of difficulty related to this period, an overview of some induction programs present in Quebec and elsewhere, the main support activities and measures for new teachers and the roles that school principals could play in supporting novice teachers. This review of the literature has made it possible to identify the factors underlying the phenomenon of dropping out and to identify among them the most important factors in the process of disengagement. In a second step, some elements from the literature review were compared to what emerged from the indepth analysis of the researcher's experience as a teacher. Similarities and differences were thus made between theory and practice. Finally, the discussion was focused on twelve statements, which are especially addressed to the principals, and which aim to support more effectively their teachers in professional integration.

Full textProfessional training has become a part of university curricula since the early seventies. Discovering competition within the education market, open university departments acquired the knowledge and know now which enabled them to become a real interface between universities and firms. This enabled them to transform mentalities within trainees groups and to build up specific projects. Open university departments can act as middle grounds between university curricula and employment. The objectives in terms of knowledge and know become part and parcel of the build up of a personality. This outlook falls within a sociological approach which may help to determine the strong and weak points of a pedagogical approach, likely to prove efficient in extra mural studies

Full textOver education has characterized integration into the job market for young adults. This research aims to study this problem through the case of one company, FNAC, and generations of its workers. Founded in 1954, this company constitutes a favourable workplace through which to study employees' career paths and how overeducated workers manage to get along in their jobs. One of the earliest large chain stores in France, the FNAC, as can be seen through an examination of its social and business history has a longstanding policy of recruiting over educated staff. The cultural identity of the firm, the strategies used to maintain this identity and the fringe benefits offered to workers all help employees adapt to their jobs and compensate for the situation of over education. How have different generations of FNAC shop assistants, in various economic c1imates, succeeded in appropriating badly paid and unskilled jobs? The research addresses this question through an analysis of work practices, career paths, and labour union participation. This investigation concerns an emerging social c1ass: this category involves people who are not considered to be members of the working c1ass because they hold university degrees, and are not associated with the middle class because of their low economic status

Full textAt each period of his life, the man learns and evolves. The formation continues is the share of this training which takes place during the active life. We seek to know at which point the two great theories o fthe market of the formation - theory of the signal and theory of the human capital - are complementary,. And allow to explain the mechanisms of this market. In our first part we see that there is an infinity of solutions of balance to the determination of the optimal level of investment in formation, according to characteristics' of the companies and the workers. And according to their environment. In thc second part, the analysis of the differences in outpul which can exist between "général" training and "spécifie" training show us that the two investments are complementary. The imperfection of the market makes it possible the company to invest in two cases. Our third part relates to the impact of the continuous training on continuing education The initial formation bas a strong impact, by giving access quickly to a formative environment. The more the formation intervenes in a repeated way, the more it bas a notable positive effect. The function of development consumer loyalty and selection ofthe workers is done over ail the duration of the course. With final, we see that the formation increases simultaneously the level of human capital and ils visibity, allowing the company "to classify" his workers, aod to pair them as well as possible. The companies invest in formation lo attract and preserve the employees most suited, while counting on the profits that the acquisition of human capital nol observed by the market allows

Full textWhat leads white collar workers infused with the values of contemporary capitalism to join associations committed to accompanying in their job search unemployed workers who have been disqualified by all other institutions? Are these volunteers seeking “greater meaning”? Are they taking up a social role, or are they giving in to an injunction to work? Are they defending an ethical perspective, and if so, which one? To what extent do they play a role in the web of actors who, since the 1980s, have contributed to redefining the norms and statuses of the welfare state? This dissertation is about a commitment that seems to embody something like a new ethic of capitalism in contemporary France. It analyses three main aspects of this phenomenon: the growth and the evolution of this volunteerism since the beginning of the 1980s, when public authorities actively supported the development of non-profit organizations, the construction of the social role of these volunteers through their activity and interactions, and how the volunteers are mobilized. It draws on four types of material: archives, statistical data drawn from the repertories of the associations, a study based on observations and interviews, and a survey. This dissertation shows the close ties between these volunteer organizations and the state, and the pivotal (and paradoxical) role that they have been led to play in the spread of the employment counseling, which over the last 15 years has become one of the main tools of the so-called “activation” policies. It analyses the work that these volunteers do for the state, and the way they redefine the statuses and the trajectory of the beneficiaries of this aid within the gaps of the social state’s action. Finally, it shows that the commitment of the volunteers, those who stay, in any case, is less a way compensating for a dissatisfaction with the new methods of management than the continuation of a professional career characterized by stability and recognition. In other words, it is those who succeed in the world of contemporary capitalism who commit long term to volunteering in these associations, thanks to a moral career whose starting point is generally dispositions to commitment, and which generally leads them to pluralize their ethics of work

Full textIn Quebec, the retention rate 5 years after entering practice is 25% lower for foreign trained nurses than it is for nurses that completed their studies locally (OIIQ, 2017a). The integration of foreign trained nurses into the health system helps to maintain a sufficient workforce and facilitate accessibility to health care for people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds (Pearson et al., 2007; RNAO, 2007). Based on the Transition Theory of Meleis (2010), our qualitative study inspired by a phenomenology approach aimed at understanding the experience of professional transition as lived by foreign trained nurses in Quebec City. The data, collected for 6 participants was via semi-structured interview, has been analysed with theme identification (Pierre Paillé & Mucchielli, 2012). Three major themes around the experience of internationally educated nurses were found: living different transitions at the same time, experimenting a different practice and realising the contrast between one’s expectations and the reality. Then, conditions influencing transition emerged from the data: using inner resources and strengths to adapt, the influence of the work environment and being different. Finally, two last themes emerged for the analysis concerning the evaluation of the integration made by the nurse herself and an feeling of accomplishment. In accordance with our results and the literature, we conclude this study suggesting different

The underlying approach is based on the concept of activity and mediation through the process of self-confrontation. The objective is to help demonstrate and understand how these vocational professionals, despite being caught between sometimes conflicting values, between the labour market and the medico-social support they provide, perceive their position as they strive to enable disabled persons to find employment

Full textThe question of the dead ends of the professional project at the persons in trouble of insertion calls to the professionals. The project is widely studied by the social psychology, the sciences of the education, the sociology but few by the clinical psychology. So, the theoretical hypothesis proposed by this research defines the project from the relation (sense, values and against values, waits and refusals, unconscious elements (idealisation, sublimation, psychological function of the project, etc. ) between a subject and its object and it is, as such, that she leans on psychoanalytical concepts for, at first, to question these in the perspective of a clinical approach of the project s'question. For this approach, we propose an interpretation of the project on the model of the interpretation of the dream by considering that there would be a latent project and a overt project. This theoretical and abstract work allowed us to propose a model of clinical reading of the professional project (Lecture Récit Discours, Epreuve d' Anticipation). We also make the hypothesis, always in a psychodynamic perspective, of a dysfunctional Mode of the relation to the professional project the presence of which could explain partially the not realization of the project at persons in difficulties of insertion. This dysfunctional Mode, for which we propose a symptomatology, would be linked to the presence of a psychic suffering (self-esteem (SEI), depression (IDA-13), feeling of shame or of fault (graphes dimensionnels) which the professional project would have function to decrease. Characteristics of the personality such as the metamotivational télic and paratélic states (TDS), the locus of control (NELC-IE), the coping (ETC) would also play a role in the risk of entrance to the dysfunctional Mode

Full textThe relationship between education and the business world has often been questioned and challenged on either part and that since the Middle Ages as the workplace evolves more rapidly taking into consideration the economic, social and cultural parameters of the time than school education can. However, students are at the heart of this interaction as they engage in academic learning with the aim to enter the job market later. To better understand this problem, this research focused on the interaction between academic learning and the needs of the food industry, particularly the catering branch involving students from a vocational school currently engaged in developing their culinary skills. Three areas of research have been established: the relationship between the skills required by the MEN and the needs of the catering business, the learning process in workshops during the first stages of training and the acquisition of skills by students and thirdly the interaction between counseling and entering professional life. These three areas of investigation were conducted with a sample of students, teachers and restaurateurs in the Rhône-Alpes region through a questionnaire, field observations and interviews. The objective was to compare the opinions questioning the learning process for better employability

Full textThis dissertation questions the category of « immigrant » whose meaning cannot be reduced to an incontestable juridical definition. The category is interpreted, redefined, used in different ways and contexts by actors who are responsible for the implementation of public policies and /or contribute to regulate the labour market. This study analyses the constuction and social usage of categories related to immigration phenomena at multiple levels of analysis (European, national, regional and local) through a comparison of two countries (France and Italy), two regions (Provence Alpes Côte-d’Azur and Liguria) and two sectors (construction and care services). I explicate how and why some discrepancies appear between the ‘official’ and ‘informal’ categories by studying the case of employment gatekeepers during the selection process and by reconstructing the life courses of a sample of immigrant workers

Full textIn research and government institutions, socio-professional integration is well known as one of the main integration catalysts for immigrants. Likewise, Quebec government chooses most of its immigrants depending on their socio-professional integration potential on Quebec’s job market. This potential is measured, among others, according to the level of education. Yet, numerous immigrants enter Quebec with very few years of study. While many scholars investigate highly qualified immigrant’s integration processes, little is known about low qualified immigrant’s integration processes. This qualitative study specifically aims to explore the professional integration experience of low qualified immigrants by using the transition theory’s concepts. The data was collected during interviews with seven low qualified immigrants engaged in a socio-professional integration program. It allowed a better understanding of the motivations driving these people to enter the labour market with support from a socio-professional integration program, to identify personal and environmental attributes favorizing this process and to explore adaptations enabling its orderly conduct

Full textThis research concerns the socio-professional reintegration of people with severe mental disorders. It aims to provide an understanding of their reintegration path in the market of regular employment, that from the viewpoint of the stakeholders and through a consideration of the social contexts in which they operate. Our study is guided by three objectives: (1) to identify elements at the individual and environmental levels likely to facilitate reintegration of people with mental disorder; (2) to identify obstacles at the individual and environmental levels likely to impede their reintegration in employment; (3) to understand the impact of vocational rehabilitation in the individual and social spheres and the users' perceptions about professional reintegration. Our conceptual framework is based on the notion/paradigm of recovery, the latter being understood as a multidimensional and nonlinear process. Our methodological approach is qualitative and rely on data collection made at EquiTravail, a community organization based in Quebec City whose mission is to promote the integration, reintegration and retention in the labor market for individuals with severe mental disorders. We carried out individual semi-structured interviews with four users and one focus group with four practitioners. The material was subjected to thematic content analysis. Our results illustrate that individual components as well as elements from the environment and those pertaining to the person-environment interaction are crucial in the socio-professional reintegration process. The success of the professional integration process is not only based on individual responsibility, but also on the interaction between individual components and environmental aspects revolving around the individual. The implications of these findings for research and practice are also discussed.

Full textObjective of the study : To study for the first time in France the psychosocial evolution of individuals with schizophrenia supported by a psychosocial rehabilitation center.Method : Psychosocial assessment was realized on 71 participants supported by the Service d’Aide à l’Insertion Professionnelle des Personnes Handicapées (SAIPPH) at the admission, 3 months later, and 10 months later. 25 participants with schizophrenia completed the entire protocol. Results : Results show improvement for vocational activity (d = 0,64 ; p = 0,01), this later still progressing after procedure (d = 1,08 ; p = 0,00075). They also indicate reduction of internalized problems (d = -0,24 ; p = 0,01) and improvement of quality of life (d = 0,41 ; p = 0,03). Multiple regression analysis determines positive predictors of professional outcome like the agreement on goal of support and implication in society. Discussion : SAIPPH seems achieve his mission on vocational outcome but they are mainly in non competitive and supported employment. Predictors of vocational outcome indicate the importance to involve individuals in activity and organization into the SAIPPH

Full textThe legislator has put in place a specific administrative procedure to recognize the work capacity of persons with disabilities : the RQTH. The 2005 legislature has radically revised the RQTH procedure, which provides a central place for people with disabilities. While one can only welcome the establishment of such a procedure, it is still largely perfectible, particularly as regards the vagueness of its award criteria or the reconciliation between respect for the adversarial and medical secrecy. The legislator has, moreover, reinforced the justiciability of these decisions by multiplying the modes of challenge. However, the absence of specialized jurisdiction in the matter of disability does not allow to draw harmonious jurisprudence and makes this dispute sometimes illegible, Legal uncertainty. RQTH decisions are accompanied by the vocational guidance of disabled workers into the labor market or the sheltered environment. This decision will have a major impact on their social rights. If the former have the status of employee, the latter will be assimilated to users of a social or medico-social service. While the progress made in the employment of people with disabilities is indisputable, it is possible to question the relevance and effectiveness of the measures implemented. Unemployment figures show their persistent difficulties in terms of employability

Full textThis analysis of strategies used by a company in the employment of disabled persons is the product of fours years of observation, undertaken as part of a company-university doctoral partnership [“CIFRE” contract]. Our study is based on interactional data and documents produced by company’s activities (communication mediums, e-mails, meetings notes, etc...). Our work falls within the boundaries of interactional linguistics, with a specific focus on how companies define disability. We were able to analyze a series of descriptive practices of disability in the context of meetings (for the preparation of internal communication, to inform and raise awareness among personnel) and though documents produced to implement an employment policy for persons with disabilities. These practices reveal ways of describing disability that greatly differ from ordinary practices, which often treat disability as a stigma. Indeed, company practices seek to present disability as a resource, in order to convincingly convey the benefits of employing disabled persons (management and financial gains, etc.). The descriptions produced are constitutive of a knowledge about disability, unique to the company’s context, and which make visible to the analyst both the processes of categorization of disabled persons as well as presumptive knowledge concerning this category. The analysis of practices observed allowed us to design a document to inform and raise awareness about the implementation of an employment policy concerning people with disabilities

"La transmission des compétences professionnelles des aides-soignantes et des préposés aux bénéficiaires dans les organisations gériatriques en France et au Québec : comparaison internationale sur le rôle central de l’intégration à l’organisation comme processus d’habilitation des nouvelles recrues par le groupe de pairs." Thesis, Besançon, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011BESA1018.
Full textNurse’s aides (called aides-soignantes) in France, and nurse’s aides (called préposés aux bénéficiaires), in Quebec (Canada) (AS/PB), are placed at the bottom of the organizational hierarchy of geriatric organizations (EHPAD in France and CHSLD in Quebec). The AS/PB still hold a central role in these organizations because they must perform acts of support and health among older dependant people. We tried to understand how professional skills are transmit for members of these occupations. Both solutions are frequently given: for AS/PB, skills have a natural character, they would not be passed, but naturally possessed. Managers of organizations, in turn, suggest the importance of learning the free skills. We chose to follow another path of research. We have studied the integration of new recruits in the geriatric organizations. 47 biographical interviews were conducted with AS/PB, and 30 hours of observation. Our results have shown that to become AS/PB is largely determined by peer judgment during the integration of new recruits into the organization. It thus appears that selection takes place for those who can secure a place in the organization and a geriatric use of AS/PB. This selection makes sense when we consider the difficult working conditions faced by these professional actors. The training does not allow recruits to experience the difficulties caused mainly by lack of staff absences and rehearsals. These difficulties lead most players to a disenchantment resulting from the gap between the idealized image of the trade (the relationship) and the organizational reality. The peer group during the orientation phase, the judge previously considered suitable for new recruits "can-do" tasks despite the difficult working conditions. The skills required are no longer limited to domestic skills. Other tacit skills are passed on to recruits deemed competent by the peer group. They aim to use collective strategies to circumvent the problems at work. The integration also has a central role because it is the basis of identity construction of the new recruit. By peer judgment (the identity for others), the representation of self (identity for itself) tends to change. Actors are asked to present themselves as individuals who had always been the taste to become AS/PB. However, the study of their professional career allows us to consider that they are mostly affected by biographical breaks. We are witnessing here is a real phenomenon of « habilitation », that is to say construction professional. Indeed, by habilitation, the actors tend to forget the social process that led them to take this job and to submit their professional career as a homogeneous continuity. The integration process has strong similarities between France and Quebec. The peer group has an important integrative function in both contexts. It also features an integral, although higher in France than in Quebec. Faced with the critical judgments of caregivers, the peer group in Quebec do not necessarily defending its members. Individual responsibility is more often highlighted. In contrast, in France, the solidarity of the group of peer is essential. But it does not allow aides to enjoy the rewarding comments of caregivers, which could increase their collective recognition

Full textWork is a key-factor of recovery for people with severe mental illness. Various programs exist to support them to gain and maintain competitive employment. In France, the rate of employment remains low for this population and only scarce researches are developed in this field, although some French practices, such as the Ç ESAT de transition È (transitional workshops) of the MESSIDOR association, appear to be performing well. Theses transitional workshops support people with psychiatric disability to gain a competitive employment on the regular labor market while working in a sheltered activity. The goal of this research was to describe the Ç ESAT de transition È program, comparing it to international evidence-based practices, such as supported-employment programs, and to define how this program can facilitate a recovery process for people with a severe mental illness. The first part of this research is intended to describe the program with a mixed method (qualitative then quantitative) in order to compare it with international evidence-based practices and to describe the roles, tasks and competencies of the two professionals supervising people with a severe mental illness, counselors and supervisors, and to define how they contribute to a recovery process for them. A second part of the research is dedicated to clients of this program, with a longitudinal study (n=160) of clinical and psychosocial variables, at the beginning of the program, and in order to document predictive factors of their job tenure in the program, of their positive evolution to work integration on the regular labor market and of their recovery. These Ç ESAT de transition È are an hybrid form of a sheltered workshop, social enterprise and supported-employment program for people with a severe mental illness. In a workplace close to the context of regular labor market, thanks to a subtle relational posture, the two professionals supervising the workers help them to develop a new positive identity, self-esteem as a worker and hope in the future, which are key-factors of a recovery process. Clients have a positive perception of their situation in this program, on clinical and psychosocial variables, and this perception is stable on the 9 months follow-up of the study. They confirm that self-esteem as a worker, counselors and supervisors are key-factors to ensure their job tenure in the program, their positive evolution to work integration on the regular labor market and their recovery. Practical implications and recommendations from this research are the type of support that should be developed in France for people a with severe mental illness to help their work integration, as well as the type of training and supervision that should be offered to the professionals supporting them

Journal of Career Assessment./Abstract. The aim of this doctoral dissertation is to analyse the role of four individual variables (personality traits, career decision-making self-efficacy, perceived social support and emotional intelligence) in explaining different decisional aspects (career decision-making difficulties, decisional styles, indecisiveness). In this doctoral work, it was using the results of the following articles that were published or were in press on journals. The article of Di Fabio and Palazzeschi (2009a) highlighted in Italian young workers engaged in paid professional training a relationship between career decision-making difficulties (Lack of readiness, Lack of information, Inconsistent information) and personality traits (inverse relationship with Extraversion and positive with Neuroticism) et inverse with emotional intelligence. The study also showed how emotional intelligence was able to explain a percentage of incremental variance in each of the three dimensions of CDDQ in relation to personality traits. The article of Di Fabio and Blustein (2010) demonstrated in Italian high school students the existence of relationships between emotional intelligence and decisional styles according to Mann et al. (1997) model showing how, among emotional intelligence dimensions, was the Intrapersonal which provided the largest percentage of inverse explanation of non-adaptive styles of the MDMQ (avoidance, procrastination, hypervigilance) whereas was Adaptability which brought the highest percentage of positive explanation of vigilance adaptive style of the MDMQ. The article of Di Fabio and Kenny (2012) confirmed in Italian high school students the existence of relationships between emotional intelligence and decisional styles in this case defined according to Scott and Bruce (1995) model. This study also underlined that it was especially self-reported emotional intelligence rather than ability-based emotional intelligence which explained decisional styles. The article of Di Fabio, Palazzeschi, Asulin-Peretz and Gati (in press) demonstrated that emotional intelligence explained a percentage of incremental variance in relation to both personality traits and career decision-making self-efficacy and perceived social support with regards to both career decision-making difficulties and indecisiveness. The study also revealed that career decision-making difficulties were better explained by emotional intelligence while indecisiveness was better explained by personality traits. The article of Di Fabio and Kenny (2011) showed the effectiveness of a training for the development of emotional intelligence designed specifically for Italian high school students according to ability-based model, showing how this training increased emotional intelligence both ability-based and self-reported and decreased career indecision and indecisiveness. The hypotheses were confirmed by the described articles, opening new perspectives for research and intervention.

Full textThis PhD, written while working at the Departemental council for Val-de-Marne (CIFRE structure), offers a survey and reflexion on the place given to learning French by migrant women, with complex insertion histories, within a training program of French as a professional language. This program has been initiated and supported by the Department, for which the PhD candidate was project manager. This research raises the question of the place and role of French language in the integrative vision of foreigners by the French State, but also by migrating persons themselves. In the same time, the missions accomplished at CIFRE have allowed to shed the light on a linguistic management and development that appears to be both implicit and territorialized. This research, rooted in the fields of didactics of languages and sociolinguistic, has been developed from a comprehensive and an interpretative epistemological orientation, informed by the hermeneutical points of view, questioning all together the notions of history, experience and projection (of the witnesses, as well as the researcher)

Full textThis research contributes to the discussion regarding the induction process of new Québec elementary and high school principals and vice-principals during the year following their appointment. To understand better this stage in one’s career, we analyzed four of its main components: the nature of newly assigned professional responsibilities, working conditions and context, the degree of support provided by direct supervisors and the school board, and new vice-principals and principals’ motivational characteristics. Simultaneously, this research evaluated individuals’ feeling of empowerment, in order to measure their motivation to carry on their new positions. The main goal was to determine whether the degree of principals and vice-principals’ perceived empowerment could provide information about how they are experiencing their professional induction. Ten incoming Québec elementary and high school principals and vice-principals were met through a process of semi-structured interviews. Seeing the notion of “professional induction” as a process, rather than a discrete moment in one’s career, each participant was interviewed on three occasions over the course of the school year: a few weeks after the participant took office, halfway through the school year, and at the end of the school year. During each interview, participants answered questions relating to the four components of the professional induction process that were previously mentioned. They were then asked to fill in a written questionnaire designed to measure their own perceived level of empowerment. The questionnaire used was an adaptation by Boudreault (1990) of a tool initially developed by Tymon (1988). This research seems to confirm the usefulness of the feeling of empowerment as an indicator of how professional induction is unfolding. More precisely, the findings suggest that there exist correlations between the degree of perceived empowerment and certain aspects of the four components of the professional induction process under study. Further studies with larger samples will nevertheless be necessary in order to validate these findings. Firstly, vice-principals with the highest levels of perceived empowerment were those with less variety in files to manage and who were mainly responsible for files that required skills they had already developed during previously-held interim positions or during their participation in committees as teachers. These vice-principals also had fewer responsibilities relating to human resources management, and particularly few responsibilities regarding support staff. Secondly, results regarding the quality of support available to the participants showed a marked tendency. Indeed, participants (both principals and vice-principals) with the highest levels of perceived empowerment were those who reported having received satisfactory support from their direct supervisor. Thirdly, participants with the highest levels of perceived empowerment were those who felt more able to satisfy their professional responsibilities and who questioned less whether they ought to remain in their current positions. The findings also suggest links between individuals’ perceived empowerment and other aspects of their professional induction process that, while less clear from the present research, deserve further investigation. These other aspects include the school’s organizational climate, the level of discretion given to new vice-principals and principals, and whether vice-principals plan to apply for positions as principals. Finally, the research has highlighted new principals’ belief that they are experiencing a unique induction process in their career and the differences between the tasks of elementary and high school vice-principals.

Full textThis theisis explores the social and economic integration of people with mental health problems in regard to paid work. Work has become an important vehicle for social integration. Indeed, it is argued that having an occupation could be a tool to recovery and wellness in that it can reduce symptoms and prevent hospitalisation. Work also allows for increased social interactions and active participation in society. There are however, other vehicles for social integration that have the possibility of providing the same advantages as work. Volunteer activities improve the quality of life, promote social interaction and provide opportunities to contribute to community life. Moreover, social withdrawal can be viewed as a way to attain a sense of distance from social pressures and thus provide a beneficial break. It is argued that persons with mental health problems who have a positive perception of their marginal situation have a lower tendency for hospitalisation. Based on a qualitative approach, this research has attempted to identify the reasons why people with a mental disorder engage in a process of socio-professional integration, social participation and social withdrawal. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 people, and through these interviews, a portrait of their social and professional process has been presented. The interviews explored the impact of mental health problems on their reality and their identity, what the labour market represents, and the reasons that justify the decision to commit or to abandon a process of socio-professional integration. This research has demonstrated that there are five factors that can influence people’s decisions: the relationship to the social environment, identity, the relationship to state institutions, legitimizing discourses and future perspectives. The results show that we can isolate the notions of vulnerability, autonomy, well-being or stability in a specific phase. Vulnerability, autonomy, well-being and stability are states that can be lived in a situation of social withdrawal, social participation and professional integration. Depending on the circumstances and the emotional state of the person, they may be considered adaptive or inadequate modes of adaptation.
