Smith, Alyson Karen. "A blurred paradise : insider and outsider perspectives on Paternoster." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/12876.

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references.<br>Paternoster is perpetually represented as being a tourist destination primarily through the use of imagery; yet this is often without interrogation of the primary narrative which when examined cracks in the visual façade surface. The overall objective of this research was to review the community conflicts through the use of an insider and outsider approach. This was achieved through using an insider qualitative, consensual, documentary style approach. Fieldwork, participant observation and interviews were used as inroads to the community and to enable the use of photography to explore existing narratives, why they exist and the possibility for alternative narratives. As an owner of property within this community (an insider), one is still categorised as an outsider, as someone not born in the community. This dual role allowed a different interrogation while providing its own challenges of not influencing the research. Further, this contested community with emotional undercurrents embedded in its complex matrix of relationships is further explored through research and interrogation of the perfect picture postcard view. This interrogation uncovers missed opportunities, mistrust, impacts of capitalism, categorisation of people along preconceived lines and a community in strife as it attempts to shift itself from its 19th century comfort zone to the 21st century filled with new economic and social realities. Simultaneously, the research explores the role that insider research presents, as well as the role of the potential biases of the photographer in her ability to create an objective view as possible. This is balanced with being on the outside, on the peripheries of this community and being part of a group that are seen as intruders. This provided a unique opportunity to research the community from a number of angles.

In this study, I investigate the concept of insider/outsider teacher identity, focusing on its relationship to teacher education. Having extensive experience as a student and teacher in rural Appalachia, I emphasize the regional perspective. To introduce the study, I present the research questions that guide the study, I explain my decision to present the study in two manuscripts, and I position my relationship within the research. In the first manuscript, "Teaching Inside Out: Exploring Insider and Outsider Status Among Teachers," I explain how I developed interest in this topic and I review academic literature about insider/outsider teacher identity. In the second manuscript, "Teaching Inside Out: A Qualitative Study of Teachers' Experiences as Insiders and Outsiders in Appalachia," I use qualitative research methods (Mayan, 2016) to delve into the experiences of teachers who have come to communities in Appalachia from outside the region, and I interrogate the implications of their experiences. This study can serve as a guide to teachers preparing for or continuing in the profession, to explore the development of their own insider/outsider identities in the communities where they work or will be working.<br>Doctor of Philosophy<br>In this study, which I present in two manuscripts, I explore insider/outsider teacher identity in Appalachia. Abstract:
<p>There are an increasing number of pupils leaving school with incomplete grades. Research indicates that the causes to this phenomenon may be individual- as well as school related and complicated to illuminate. The purpose of the study is to examine the processes of exclusion that have resulted in pupils´ incomplete degrees. Two research problems have been formulated. The first one is about the identification of exclusion and branding factors for pupils with incomplete degrees. The second one focuses on how the pupils processes of branding- and exclusion are shaped. Six in dept interviews with three pupils with incomplete degrees have been conducted from a life history perspective. Each pupil has been interviewed twice, at different occasions. Results show that the factors vary and are individual, and can be identified within the family as well as the school. In school, there may be a tendency to refer the problem to the pupil rather than to the entire context.</p><p>This brands pupils that already are in a difficult situation, but results also show that school can have including tendencies as well. The three pupils in the study have in common that they contribute to the branding- and exclusion process by excluding themselves. To conclude, there are several factors that are intertwined and that together contribute to the result of incomplete degrees. Two of the pupils´ stories were related to Goldman’s (1980) identified stages of branding, which resulted in an understanding of these pupils process of exclusion. The third pupils´ story however, differed from the other two, and as a consequence, differed from Goldman’s theory, which is discussed.</p><br><p>Allt fler svenska elever går ut grundskolan med ofullständiga betyg.

Abstract:
This study was carried out with the intention of examining the defensive mechanism employed against the latest cyber espionage methods including both insider and outsider attacks. The main focus of this study was on web servers as the targets of the cyber attacks. Information in connection to the study was obtained from researchers’ online articles. A survey was also conducted at MidSweden University in order to obtain information about the latest cyber attacks on web servers and about the existing defensive mechanism against such attacks. The existing defensive mechanism was surveyed and a simple design was created to assist in the investigation of the efficiency of the system. Some simple implementations of the existing defensive mechanism were made in order to provide some practical results that were used for the study. The existing defensive mechanism was surveyed and improved upon where possible. The improved defensive mechanism was designed and implemented and its results were compared with the results from the existing defensive mechanism. Due to the fact that the majority of the attackers use defensive mechanisms’ vulnerability in order to find their way into devices such as web servers, it was felt that, even with the most sophisticated improved defensive mechanism in place, it would not be entirely correct to claim that it is possible to fully protect web servers against such attacks.

Groen, Cassandra J. "Advancing from Outsider to Insider: A Grounded Theory of Professional Identity Negotiation." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77392.

Full text
Abstract:
As evidenced by a large body of research within the engineering education community, those individuals who do not maintain a sense of belonging, identify with engineering groups, or perceive themselves as engineers are more likely to leave the profession. However, little is known about the ways in which engineering students construct or develop their personal and professional identities as influenced by the disciplinary values, behaviors, and practices learned during the undergraduate education experience. In order to deepen the understanding of professional identity formation within the engineering disciplines, a grounded theory study was conducted to explore the experiences of 31 sophomore, junior, and senior level undergraduate students enrolled in a civil engineering program. Upon conducting an iterative process of data collection and analysis, a theory of professional identity negotiation emerged from interviews depicting participants' experiences. This theory titled Negotiating Equilibrium: Advancing from Outsider to Insider or the AOI Model, captures the identities negotiated by students as they iteratively define, adjust, and readjust definitions of self and profession to maintain a balance between their personal self and the learned disciplinary identity of the civil engineering profession. As participants gained this balance, they began to see themselves as professionals and advance from an outsider (i.e., one not belonging to the civil engineering profession) to an insider (i.e., one belonging to the civil engineering profession). The AOI Model provides a framework for researchers to further explore professional identity formation, promotes the development of identity-influencing coursework and instructor teaching approaches, and inspires future research trajectories in engineering and civil engineering education.<br>Ph. Al-Morjan, Abdulrazaq Abdulaziz. "An investigation into a digital forensic model to distinguish between 'insider' and 'outsider'." Thesis, De Montfort University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/4402.

Full text
Abstract:
IT systems are attacked using computers and networks to facilitate their crimes and hide their identities, creating new challenges for corporate security investigations. There are two main types of attacker: insiders and outsiders. Insiders are trusted users who have gained authorised access to an organisation's IT resources in order to execute their job responsibilities. However, they deliberately abuse their authorised (i.e. insider) access in order to contravene an organisation’s policies or to commit computer crimes. Outsiders gain insider access to an organisation's IT objects through their ability to bypass security mechanisms without prior knowledge of the insider’s job responsibilities, an advanced method of attacking an organisation’s resources in such a way as to prevent the abnormal behaviour typical of an outsider attack from being detected, and to hide the attacker’s identity. For a number of reasons, corporate security investigators face a major challenge in distinguishing between the two types of attack. Not only is there no definitive model of digital analysis for making such a distinction, but there has to date been no intensive research into methods of doing so. Identification of these differences is attempted by flawed investigative approaches to three aspects: location from which an attack is launched, attack from within the organisation's area of control, and authorised access. The results of such unsound investigations could render organisations subject to legal action and negative publicity. To address the issue of the distinction between insider and outsider attacks, this research improves upon the first academic forensic analysis model, Digital Forensic Research Workshop (DFRWS) [63]. The outcome of this improvement is the creation of a Digital Analysis Model for Distinction between Insider and Outsider Attacks (DAMDIOA), a model that results in an improvement in the analysis investigation process, as well as the process of decision. This improvement is effected by two types of proposed decision: fixed and tailored. The first is based on a predetermined logical condition, the second on the proportion of suspicious activity. The advantage of the latter is that an organisation can adjust its threshold of tolerance for such activity based on its level of concern for the type of attack involved. This research supports the possibility of distinguishing between insider and outsider attacks by running a network simulation which carried out a number of email attack experiments to test DAMDIOA. It found that, when DAMDIOA used predetermined decisions based on legitimate activities, it was able to differentiate the type of attack in seven of the eight experiments conducted. It was the tailored decisions with threshold levels Th=0.2 and 0.3 that conferred the ability to make such distinctions. When the researcher compared legitimate activities, including users’ job responsibilities, with the current methods of distinguishing between insider and outsider attacks, the criterion of authorised access failed three times to make that distinctions. This method of distinction is useless when there is a blank or shared password. He also discovered that both the location from which an attack was launched and attacks from areas within an organisation’s control failed five times to differentiate between such attacks. There are no substantive differences between these methods. The single instance in which the proposed method failed to make these distinctions was because the number of legitimate activities equalled the number of suspicious ones. DAMDIOA has been used by two organisations for dealing with the misuse of their computers, in both cases located in open areas and weakly protected by easily guessed passwords. IT policy was breached and two accounts moved from the restricted to the unlimited Internet policy group. This model was able to identify the insiders concerned by reviewing recorded activities and linking them with the insiders’ job responsibilities. This model also highlights users’ job responsibilities as a valuable source of forensic evidence that may be used to distinguish between insider and outsider attacks. DAMDIOA may help corporate security investigators identify suspects accurately and avoid incurring financial loss for their organisations. This research also recommends many improvements to the process by which user activities are collected before the attack takes place, thereby enabling distinctions to be better drawn. It also proposes the creation of a physical and logical log management system, a centralised database for all employee activities that will reduce organisations’ financial expenditures. Suggestions are also proposed for future research to classify legitimate and suspicious activities, evaluate them, identify the important ones and standardise the process of identifying and collecting users’ job responsibilities. This work will remove some of the limitations of the proposed model.

Abstract:

Sekhoto, Mapaseka. "From outsider to insider : how direct selling multinational enterprises leverage social capital to internationalise." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/80513.

Full text
Abstract:
Direct selling multinational enterprises (DSMNEs) have successfully managed to leverage insider networks to overcome the liability of outsidership when entering base of pyramid (BoP) markets (Dolan & Johnston-Louis, 2011). The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of how DSMNEs leverage social capital to move from outsider to insider networks when internationalising within BoP markets in South Africa, specifically examining the influence of network structure relationships: network closure and structural holes to market entrance. The study adopts a social capital perspective to firm internationalisation. To address the purpose of the study, the exploration draws from the direct selling industry and international business literature. A descriptive phenomenological design was developed and data was gathered through conducting 10 in-depth semi-structured interviews. The results clarified the role of social structures in enabling independent direct sellers to create network relationships that facilitate the internationalisation process of DSMNEs. Furthermore, a deeper understanding was gained on how DSMNEs leverage social capital to enter BoP markets largely by converting the large number of people involved in the informal economy into suitable human capital. The transferability of the results could be supported by research within the context of other business sectors or developing sub-Saharan countries. The study has implications for international business globalisation strategies as it identifies BoP network specific knowledge to target network insidership. The study embraces an early attempt to encompass the interface of DSMNE internationalisation and Ubuntu/Botho social network structures. The study offers important theoretical understandings into the international business, direct selling firms and social capital literatures.<br>Mini Dissertation (MPhil)--University of Pretoria, 2020.<br>Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS)<br>MPhil<br>Unrestricted

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the relationship between the Brazilian Women's Policy Agency (WPA), the Secretaria Especial de Politicas para as Mulheres- SPM (the Special Secretariat for Public Policies for Women), and the feminist movements in two policy debates in 2003- 2006. This study analyses the level of policy impact the feminist movements had through the SPM in two contrasting case studies, abortion and Violence against Women (VA W). These cases were selected because they were both considered high priority for the feminist movements, and they both received government attention prior to, and during 2003-2006. However, they differed substantially in the level of contentiousness, which indicated different probabilities for movements' success. Loosely informed by the Research Network on Gender and the State (RNGS) framework, this study explores the interaction between feminist movements and, the SPM through focussing on the policy environment, the characteristics of the feminist movements, and the activities and characteristics of the SPM. My findings are based upon primary and secondary source material, including elite interviews, participant observations and the analysis of academic and activist material. In the abortion debate, feminists gained access to, and impacted upon the policy debates about decriminalization, though the partnership between the SPM and the movements did not result in a change of policy. In the case of VAW however, the SPM facilitated the creation of Brazil's first law regulating V A W. I conclude that although the SPM was less able to enable feminist impact in the abortion debate than in V A W, I nevertheless argue that the SPM secured a high level of feminist impact on policy debates in both cases.

McKeown, Max. "The constitution of strategic change by insider and outsider CEOs : language games and discursive bets." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2010. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/34603/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is about how insider and outsider CEOs use language to accomplish strategic change. It argues that language matters to strategy. It also argues that research and theory have neglected language. It finds support from the literature and empirical evidence. Data came from CEO communication in two large US corporations over twenty-five years. The study explores CEO use of language, including the textual production, dissemination, and consumption of discourse, to investigate mechanisms for legitimating authority discourse, transforming organizational and individual identities and renegotiating the prevailing strategic narratives. It makes several original contributions to the field of strategic management research, particularly in the areas of change and leadership. It contributes to the emerging micro focus on strategy as actions and as process – the study of 'strategy as practice'. First, it reveals strategy narratives, how they change over time and in different contexts. It shows discourse is effective at tracking patterns and mechanisms of strategic change. It throws detailed empirical light on discourse as a vehicle for change. It does this in a novel way contributing new inductively derived categories and concepts. Second, it offers a new way of conceptualizing the role of CEO in the constitution of strategy as maker of discursive bets in the form of various language games. These games play out internally and externally. They shape organizational outcomes – creating, sustaining or slowing change. Third, it sets out a discursive-recursive model to explain how CEO discourse leads to strategic action or inaction. It describes different characteristics of this model with empirical examples. Fourth, most importantly it examined the role of insider and outsider CEOs in strategic change. It contributed specific new understanding of how success is accomplished. It shows how and why certain language games work. It contributes new concepts, relationships, and theory.

Abstract:
By using structured and formalized onboarding processes based on scientific research, organizations can help the new employees understand their duties and their role in the organization and help them develop into productive and committed co-workers. The purpose of this study is to investigate how workplace introduction within a company is experienced by newly employed employees by answering the research questions; is there any systematic workplace introduction within the organization and how is this workplace introduction designed? How is the introduction period of new employees experienced? How can workplace introduction be understood based on theories on onboarding and organizational socialization? The method is qualitative and the empirical data has been collected through semistructured interviews with a total of six informants, that all work in the IT industry. The theoretical framework used for analyzing collected empirical data is Bauer's (2010) models of organizational and individual aspects of onboarding and Lindelöws (2016) theory regarding the content of workplace introduction. The result indicates that the studied organization is working informally and unstructured with workplace introduction and that the new employees experience the need for change and formalization of workplace introduction. A proposal for a change in the organizations workplace production is presented, based on the experiences of the informants and the theoretical framework, where measures includes, for example, mentorship programs and clearer information to new employees regarding the culture and core values of the business.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to contribute knowledge about how newly hired employees experience participation, learning and identification with their workplace when the socialization process takes place at a distance. The purpose is specified in the following questions: how do employees who are introduced at a distance experience their relationships with colleagues? What experiences do employees have of communicating with colleagues when the work takes place at a distance? And how do employees experience their opportunities for informal learning under distance-based conditions? The underlying empiric is material from seven semi-structured interviews. The informants have been employed for one to eleven months and are introduced at a distance due to covid-19 restrictions. The material was analyzed based on a combination of thematic and phenomenographic analysis methods in relation to the study's theoretical framework, which is Lave and Wenger's theory of communities of practice. The results were discussed in relation to previous research and our study shows that informal communication is difficult to create in a digital context, it appears that communication is perceived as formal and purpose-oriented. Furthermore, the study shows that introduction at a distance makes it difficult to create relationships with colleagues and the feeling of community. The results further show that introduction as well as work at a distance can produce a feeling of being invisible. A distance introduction further results in difficulties when it comes to asking questions. A conclusion drawn from the study is that informal communication in a digital context is important to enable new employees' conditions for participation, learning and identification.

Abstract:
Scholars often address the process of enlargement as one-sided argument. This work provides a general theory of organizational expansion by including strategies and actions of both, applicant states and members of international organizations. It is argued that dependent on the domestic characteristics of states an organization strategically implement a set of conditions to avoid the application and admission of states, which are either not able to conform with the rules or not willing to pay the costs of membership. This process incorporates two stages. I test this theory by utilizing a Heckman-Probit-Selection Model, which accounts for this two-stage procedure. The results confirm that conditions are important to avoid costs in the process of expansion.

Abstract:
How come that people with disabilities still do not have the same opportunity to receive a job offer as the rest of the population? Who represents these disabled people’s interests in labormarket-related discussions? This thesis aims to evaluate the representation of the disabled within the labor market by comparing interest groups to trade union organizations based on thedebate between the Power resource approach (PRA) and the New politics (NP) perspective. There is limited research on this area related to disabled people; therefore, this thesis adapts the two theories in a new way when trying to apply the perspectives on disabled people. To empirically investigate the representation between interest groups and trade union organizations, qualitative and quantitative data are collected and analyzed using a framework for representation based on Hanna Pitkin’s definition of substantive representation. The results show that the trade union organizations do participate to a large extent, though not to the same extent as interest groups. Thereby the thesis gives some empirical support for Pierson’s New politics perspective, but this area is still in need of future research.

Abstract:
Mass Media and Communication<br>Ph.D.<br>In a time of expanding globalization and worldwide interconnectedness through the Internet, the need for a better understanding of diverse cultures has taken on a new urgency. One way people learn about cultures other than their own is through the news media. Yet journalists have long been criticized for their inability to represent the complexities of cultures. The concept of cultural competence has been used to enhance cultural understanding in a variety of professions, including health care, social work, psychology, business and public relations. This dissertation applied the concept of cultural competence to journalists, using as theoretical frameworks the social construction of reality and concepts related to social cognition. The study explored factors that contribute to or hinder the cultural competence of journalists, including multimedia journalistic practices that influence the cultural competence of reporters and their news coverage. To answer the research questions posed in this dissertation, an extensive case study was conducted in a multimedia journalism laboratory at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, in which student reporters produce news pieces about urban neighborhoods. The research involved 223 surveys, 28 observations of students reporting in the field, and 71 in-depth interviews with student reporters, news sources, neighborhood representatives, and lab professors. A textual analysis also was conducted of selected multimedia news packages produced by the student reporters. Five key factors were found to influence the cultural competence of journalists: awareness of self; awareness of the complexity of "insider" or "outsider" status; use of journalistic ethics, norms and routines; knowledge of the other, and skills and attributes that influence knowledge of the other. New multimedia journalistic practices were found to provide the potential to move journalists and their news texts toward more cultural competence. This study provides new meaning for what it means to be a journalist as one who dwells in the borderlands, occupying liminal spaces and promoting understanding over current norms of objectivity. This new meaning could be supported by journalism education programs that encourage future reporters to strive for a culturally competent approach to reporting and news production that promotes understanding for themselves and their audiences.<br>Temple University--Theses

Abstract:
Background: Achieving an abnormal return on your investment is something investors are trying to achieve. A lot of attempts have been made to try and find an investment strategy that always generates abnormal returns, although none has been proven to be absolute. Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) proponents argue that when it comes to public available information, one could not get an abnormal advantage of this information. Behavioural Finance (BF) proponents however argue that there may still be possible for this due to human psychology. For markets to have the best possibilities for being efficient, it must be a large and competitive market where information transfers rapidly. When analysing aspects necessary for earning abnormal return for outsiders, there are indications that these aspects does exist and it might be profitable to mimic the insiders operating in the Swedish large-cap bank sector. The large-cap bank sector contains of Svenska Handelsbanken (SHB), Nordea, Swedbank and Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (SEB). Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to explore whether there exist an opportunity in the Swedish bank sector for outsiders to earn abnormal return based on insiders’ transactions. In the process an indirect test will be made to see if the semi-strong form of efficiency holds for the Swedish bank sector. Method: Observing the movements on the market when the information about insider trading becomes public. The results are tested for both statistical significance and economical significance. Conclusion: The purpose of this study was to try and determine whether or not outsiders could mimic the insider’s transactions in order to earn abnormal return in the Swedish bank sector. However, based on this study this seems not to be possible in the overall sector. The signs that indicated that this would be possible for the Swedish large-cap banks turned out to be false. The result that showed statistical difference from zero was negative and it was therefore concluded that the insider did not predict the future very well. This leads to the conclusion that there are stronger factors than the sign of insiders’ transactions determine the future stock price. Since the insiders could not predict the future stock prices, any attempt from outsiders to try to exploit their information would not be beneficial. This resulted in the BF assumptions of under- and overreaction in the price did not occur in this study and instead the results turned out to be in line with the EMH description of semi-strong markets.<br>Bakgrund: Att uppnå överavkastning på sin investering är något investerare ständigt försöker uppnå.

The purpose of this study was to determine if individuals who supported denying citizenship to children of foreign parentage and making English the sole language spoken in the United States held the opinion that a sentence length over 15 years was appropriate for non-U.S. individuals. Other purposes were to determine if individuals with high religiosity or who carried a lethal weapon also held the opinion that a sentence length over 15 years was appropriate for non-U.S. individuals. Pearson's Chi-Square was used to determine if a significant relationship existed between the independent variables and the dependent variable. The data indicated that a significant relationship existed between the length of the sentence imposed on non-U.S. individuals by those individuals who supported denying citizenship to children of foreign parentage, who want to make English the sole spoken language, individuals with high religiosity, and individuals who carried a lethal weapon.

Abstract:
Accidental and targeted data breaches threaten sustainable business practices and personal privacy, exposing all types of businesses to increased data loss and financial impacts. This single case study was conducted in a medium-sized enterprise located in Brevard County, Florida, to explore the successful data protection strategies employed by the information system and information technology business leaders. Actor-network theory was the conceptual framework for the study with a graphical syntax to model data protection strategies. Data were collected from semistructured interviews of 3 business leaders, archival documents, and field notes. Data were analyzed using thematic, analytic, and software analysis, and methodological triangulation. Three themes materialized from the data analyses: people--inferring security personnel, network engineers, system engineers, and qualified personnel to know how to monitor data; processes--inferring the activities required to protect data from data loss; and technology--inferring scientific knowledge used by people to protect data from data loss. The findings are indicative of successful application of data protection strategies and may be modeled to assess vulnerabilities from technical and nontechnical threats impacting risk and loss of sensitive data. The implications of this study for positive social change include the potential to alter attitudes toward data protection, creating a better environment for people to live and work; reduce recovery costs resulting from Internet crimes, improving social well-being; and enhance methods for the protection of sensitive, proprietary, and personally identifiable information, which advances the privacy rights for society.

<p>This thesis aims to describe how Swedish firms have established themselves on the Japanese market with help from their business network. This research has been conducted in the light of the economic recession and the complicated Japanese business networks. We have chosen to use a qualitative approach and by doing so we received the three respondents’ views of doing business on the Japanese market. We have focused this thesis on the importance of networks and relationships and have chosen to use new theories regarding business networks and business relationships for the base of our research and to link them with our empirical findings. The interviews conducted have been focused on three respondents who all have broad experience of the Japanese market. These three interviews have been compared to each other in our analysis and through this we have drawn our conclusions. We also give recommendations for Swedish firms who aim to establish themselves on this market.</p>

Abstract:
Background: It is a well-known phenomenon that nurses and other oncology staff have a tendency to ascribe patients with cancer more problems and suffering than the patients themselves report. Aim: The overall aim of the present thesis was therefore to gain increased knowledge and understanding of dis/agreement between patients with cancer and nurses regarding their perception of patients’ situation and of the importance of patient-nurse dis/agreement in clinical practice. Methods: A prospective comparative design was used. Data were collected from a sample of 90 consecutively recruited patient-nurse pairs. Each pair consisted of a patient with cancer, newly admitted to a ward, and a nurse responsible for that patient’s care. Data were collected from the pairs with corresponding self-administrated questionnaires on two occasions: directly after the admission interview and on the patient’s third day on the ward. Results: At the group level, a distinct pattern was shown in which nurses ascribed the patients more emotional distress, less coping resources and a lower quality of life than the patients themselves reported. In short, the results revealed the following clinical importance of patient-nurse dis/agreement. With respect to how nurses act in relation to their perceptions of patients’ emotional distress, patient-nurse dis/agreement did not seem to be important; with few exceptions, nurses’ implemented care did not differ when it was directed at more as compared to less distressed patients. Further, nurses’ general tendency to overestimate cancer patients’ problems and suffering had no influence on patients’ satisfaction with received care and nurses’ satisfaction with provided care. However, patients cared for by nurses who underestimated their level of depression were less satisfied with those nurses’ care. In addition, the more frequently the nurse had implemented care characterized by a trusting relationship, the higher patients’ and nurses’ satisfaction with received/provided care. Conclusions: Initial patient-nurse dis/agreement concerning patients’ situation appears to be of little significance to nurses’ caring behaviour and to patients’ and nurses’ subsequent evaluation of received and provided care.

Abstract:
In this exploratory thesis project, I consider what emerging approaches we can take as social scientists to showcase and critically engage self-representations of diasporic individuals, who often lack visibility and legibility within the dominant cultural archive. Filmmaking as a social research practice can provide rich audiovisual data, physical and social access to materials for nonacademics, and opportunities to document and share subjects' comments and settings without the limitations of transcription. This is especially salient in the emerging media landscape of Web 2.0, where digital communications technology applications (such as Facebook, Skype, and Snapchat) are accessible by a global audience, and can act as tools for cultural identity production by diasporic individuals. This project documents the experiences of several first- and second-generation Bangladeshi American immigrants in relation to digital communications technology advances within the past decade, for the purposes of collecting and sharing stories of diasporic individuals, offering a venue for self-expression through empathetic interviewing and collaborative oral history methods, and contributing to the American cultural archive in the context of emerging media and academic landscapes. Abstract:

Jebril, Mona A. S. "Academic life under occupation : the impact on educationalists at Gaza's universities." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2018. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/271892.

Full text
Abstract:
This sociological study explores the past and current higher education (HE) experience of educationalists at Gaza’s universities and how this experience may be evolving in the shifting socio-political context in the Arab World. The thesis is motivated by three questions: 1. What are the perspectives of academic staff in the Faculties of Education at Gaza’s universities on their own past HE experiences? 2. What are the perspectives of students and their lecturers (academic staff) in the Faculties of Education at Gaza’s universities on students’ current HE experiences? 3. How do educationalists in the Faculties of Education at Gaza’s universities perceive the shifting socio-political context in the Arab World, and what current or future impact do they think it will have on the education context at Gaza’s universities? To examine these questions, I conducted an inductive qualitative study. Using 36 in-depth, semi- structured interviews which lasted between (90-300 min), I collected data from educationalists (15 academic staff; 21 students) at two of Gaza’s universities. Due to difficulties of access to the Gaza Strip, the participants were interviewed via Skype from Cambridge. Informed by the literature review, and triangulated with other research activities, such as reviewing participants’ CVs, browsing universities websites, and keeping a reflective journal, a thematic analysis was conducted on the interview data. Theoretically, although this study has benefited from conceptual insights, such as those found in Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed and in Pierre Bourdieu’s work on symbolic violence, it is a micro-level study, which is mainly data driven. The findings of this research show that in the past, educationalists were relatively more passive in terms of shaping their HE experiences, despite efforts to become resilient. In the present, students and their lecturers continue to face challenges that impact negatively on their participation and everyday life at Gaza’s universities. However, how the HE experience will evolve out of this context in the future is uncertain. The Arab Spring revolutions have had an influence on Gaza HE institutions’ campuses as they have triggered more awareness of students’ grievances and discontent. Because of some political and educational barriers, however, students’ voices are a cacophony; they remain split between “compliance” and resistance (Bourdieu, 1984, p. 471; Swartz, 2013, p. 39). Previously, Sara Roy (1995) rightly indicated a structure of “de-development” in the Gaza Strip (p.110). The findings from this research show that the impact of occupation and of the changes in the Arab World on the educational context in Gaza are more complex than previously thought. There is a simultaneous process of construction and destruction that is both external and internal to educationalists and which undermines academic work at Gaza’s universities. Based on this, the study concludes by explaining six implications of this complex structure for academic practice at Gaza’s universities, offering nine policy recommendations for HE reform, and highlighting six areas for future research.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中正大學<br>社會福利學系暨研究所<br>102<br>Over the past decades, the structure of labor markets in the Western countries have changed profoundly. Almost all countries have the situation of labor segmentation. When the outsider’s population proportion growth, it may lead to the welfare losses, and a lack of social and political integration. Poverty, inequality, and social exclusion are back on the political agenda, shaping a dual labor market. This study aimed to view the labor market divide in different regimes and explore the effect on the institutional factors to the labor market divide. In Häusermann and Schwander’ s study use the new conceptualization and measurement by the class scheme based on occupational profile while people in similar professions tend to have similar employment biographies, but not use the current labor status as a conceptual basis of outsiderness. Then we can explore the different risk groups in the dual labor market in different regimes. Therefore, this study will use three welfare regime types from Esping-Andersen, then add Southern and East Asia model. We will compare to these five welfare regimes and discuss what the extent to which labor market segmentation leads to economic, social and political insider-outsider divides under the different regimes. Finally, we could open the dialogue between Liberal, Continental, Nordic, Southern and East Asia. After comparative analyze, the results show that there is the highest proportion of outsider in Liberal regime, and most of them are low-skilled persons, secondly only to the southern countries. It also has significant differences in the training opportunity and in union participation. In Nordic countries, labor market segmentation is less between insider and outsider representation but more strongly biased toward women; Continental European countries showing a highly gendered labor market, income gap and training opportunities vary greatly; The labor market in Southern regime is less dualized than other regimes in some variable(such as gender, gross income). However, the lower levels of inequality simply reflect the poor job conditions even for insiders. East Asia countries also have highly segmentation in gender. And it has wide gross income gap and generation segmentation. But there is no obvious dualization in political integration. Finally, we will discuss about the inequality in various institutions in East Asia countries, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

Abstract:
yes<br>Purpose – The management of reputation and status is central to creative professional service firms (CPSFs) rendering the internationalisation process a particular challenge. We build on arguments that internationalisation requires moving from outsidership to insidership within client networks and focus on how CPSFs build signals about quality to start this process. Design/methodology/approach – The exploration draws from the international business, professional services and organizational status bodies of literature. A multiple case study design is developed comprising ten Irish architecture firms. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted. Findings - The findings clarify how relationships start in the internationalisation process through signal building. This allows firms to join client networks moving from outsidership to insidership. Our findings systemise three different approaches for CPSFs: from outsidership to insidership within a local market network, within a global industry network and within a global project network. Research Limitations/Implications – Research within other sectoral and geographical contexts could support transferability of the findings. Practical implications – The study has implications for CPSF’s international business strategies as it identifies multiple paths to gaining network insidership and the tactics employed to achieve this.

Abstract:
According to the interpersonal process model, interactions characterized by self-disclosure and empathic responding foster emotional intimacy between the two participating individuals (Reis & Shaver, 1988). This study provided “insider” and “outsider” perspectives of this model, examining the relation between perceived and observed behaviors in couple interactions and their relative contributions to the development of intimate feelings. The sample consisted of 102 community couples who completed measures of intimacy after engaging in videotaped discussions about relationship injuries that occurred both within and outside of the relationship. Both self-report and observational measures were used to assess disclosure and empathic responding during these discussions. There was significant agreement between self- and observer-report of men’s behavior, between self- and observer-report of women’s male partner’s behavior, and between partners’ report of disclosure and empathic responding. There was mixed support for global distress and attachment style as predictors of differences between self- and observer-report. Whereas an earlier study using observational measures found gender differences in the effect of self-disclosure and empathic responding on intimacy (Mitchell et al., 2008), in this study self-report measures from the same sample indicated that perception of both an individual’s own and his or her partner’s disclosure and empathic responding predicted intimacy for both men and women. Observational measures provided incremental validity relative to self-report measures in predicting intimacy. These findings suggest that targeting certain personal and relational characteristics may be helpful in treating intimacy deficits and also indicate that self-report and observational measures provide unique information about the influence of behaviors on the development of intimate feelings in couple relationships.

By exploiting realism's failure to ever fully represent, reflexive and performative techniques enable a queer discourse. These techniques create 1) a parodic premise that calls attention to the disjunction between documentary's legitimizing conventions and queer as a viable subject, 2) a subjectification of the insider-outsider that troubles distinctions between the audience and the subject and the filmmaker and the subject, and 3) enables the embodied knowledge of queer subjectivity to emerge.<br>text

Abstract:
M.A. University of the Witwatersrand, Faculty of Humanities (The African Centre for Migration & Society), 2012<br>This research is located in the broader body of literature and activity that have sought to comprehend the xenophobic violence of 2008 in South Africa and the persistence of this phenomenon, especially in poor locales of the main urban areas. The primary objective is to explore the perceptions that South Africans have of the rights of those people designated as outsiders and/or foreigners who live in areas that have experienced xenophobic violence targeting foreigners as well as people of South African minority ethnic groups. This study attempts to unpack the discourse of insider versus outsider rights within South African communities in relation to South Africa’s recent history - the xenophobic violence of 2008. Notably, it examines the challenge brought about by the crushing of space and time as an effect of globalization and how this has contributed to the process of multi-culturalism and multi-ethnicity that local communities are largely unprepared to cope with. This study contributes to the understanding of “otherness” as a key issue to design and implement better policies and practices that are necessary to promote the social and spatial inclusion of international migrants in Africa and the world. The empirics of this study give credence to the view that migrants’ rights operate at the rhetorical level, largely due to the lack of political will to translate them into actual benefits. The study specifically looks at two communities affected by xenophobic violence - Tembisa and Alexandra. Focusing on South Africans, the study draws on information gathered through in-depth semi-structured interviews and group discussions carried out from July through October 2011. The findings are examined through thematic content analysis.

Vojče, Barbora. "Labour market reforms in Spain and its impact on labour market flexibility." Master's thesis, 2015. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-191141.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis deals with the labour market reforms in Spain that were adopted in order to increase the labour market flexibility and decrease the extraordinarily high unemployment persisting in Spain over decades. The thesis focuses especially on the latest labour market reform adopted in February 2012, which is considered the most impactful one, especially regarding dismissals and their cost. After introducing the main characteristics of the Spanish labour market including, among others the historical circumstances that have led to the current situation, an analysis of several labour market indicators is performed, aiming to find out whether the objectives of the 2012 reform were fulfilled or not. Furthermore, the thesis investigates the performance of the German Hartz reforms adopted in 2003-2005 and attempts to quantify the cost of potential application of their measures on the current Spanish labour market situation. This provides a valuable insight useful for the proposal of recommendations to improve the Spanish labour market.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣師範大學<br>社會教育學系<br>100<br>The study aims to investigate local culture image elements and the formation of the image elements in Gongguan of Taipei city that base on the context of local discourse and city image concept which lively discussed by all sectors in current society. Two types of communities which located in Gongguan are selected for comparison, and named “the insider: old Gongguan residents at Jianjun public housing.” and “the outsider: NTU Consciousness campus organization in National Taiwan University” respectively. The techniques of participant observation, in-depth interview, archival research and cognitive map analysis are used to collect data. The main findings of the study are as follows: 1. Two communities constructing the culture image elements of Gongguan are as follows: (1) Description of the NTU Consciousness, the culture paths were constructed by Royal Palm Boulevard, Zhoushan Road, Fanglan Road, Wanxin Railway and Liugong Canal. The culture edges were constructed by Fu Szu-nien memorial garden. The culture districts were constructed by the Gongguan churches, the Japanese-style dormitories and the culture heritages of NTU campus. The culture nodes were constructed by the bicycle issues and the campus public space issues. Finally, the culture landmark was constructed by National Taiwan University campus. (2) Description of the Old Gongguan, the culture paths were constructed by Zhoushan Road, Wanxin Railway, Liugong Canal and Tingzhou Road. The culture edges were constructed by Xindian River riverside and Roosevelt Road. The culture districts were constructed by the Gongguan churches, the Gongguan temples, the Japanese-style dormitories, the Gongguan military dependents, and Taipei Water Park. The culture nodes were constructed by the bicycle issues and the campus public space issues. Finally, the culture landmark was constructed by National Taiwan University campus. 2. The type of the formation of the culture image elements in Gongguan are as follows: (1) Visually oriented: divided into “continuity of landscape” and “appearance of unique style” (2) Living structures: divided into “connection of the daily life”, “competition of the different functions, and “interruption of the observers and the space” (3) Daily practice: divided into “identification of local history and culture”, “old Gongguan memories of the ordinary people”, “reinterpretation of space meaning”, “the platform that has been given the meaning of dialogue” and “reflection of group differences in lifestyle” In light of above findings, researcher reflects on Lynch's city image argument. Then researcher transforms the argument into the concept of "local identity" and proposes certain suggestions for the succeeding researchers as reference.

Eshareturi, Cyril, L. Serrant-Green, V. E. Galbraith, and M. Glynn. "Silence of a scream: application of the Silences Framework to provision of nurse-led interventions for ex-offenders." 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/15423.

Full text
Abstract:
No<br>The Silences Framework and its underpinning concept of ‘Screaming Silences’ was originally presented with the invitation for further peer review and utilisation in other contexts in order to test its usefulness and enable critique by a wider audience. This paper reports the use of the framework in a study researching nurse-led interventions for released ex-offenders. Screaming Silences were situated in how an issue, as experienced by ex-offenders, screams out to them in relation to their health and its impact on their reality while remaining silent in the consciousness of society and the application of practice. In addressing these Screaming Silences, we associated the Silences Framework within marginal discourses as they are less prioritised by policy and frequently positioned as far removed from what society considers as normal. Screaming Silences were situated in the subjective experiences of ex-offenders known as the ‘listener’ and the social and personal context in which these experiences occurred. We affirmed that the framework is ideally suited for researching issues which are under-researched, silent from policy discourse and excluded from practice, as it is oriented towards exploring individual experiences by valuing individual interpretations of events.

Rousseau, Jane. "Empowered or Tokenized?: The Experiences of Aboriginal Human Service Workers and Organizational Responses in a Historically Oppressive Child Welfare System." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/5273.

Full text
Abstract:
Government human service organizations regularly attempt to recruit ethnically and culturally diverse professionals to improve services to diverse communities. The assumption here is that organizational culture and structure support this organizational practice. This study considers the unique challenge for Aboriginal professionals who work in a government child welfare system responsible for the oppression of Aboriginal children, families, and communities. As a non-Aboriginal organizational insider and researcher, I use a combined Indigenous/ethnographic approach to explore these issues with Aboriginal professionals within the British Columbia Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD). This study involves a dual focus that examines the history, identity, values, motivations, and practice approaches of Aboriginal professionals as well as how organizational structural and environment variables support or impede their representation of community needs and interests. Analysis of these two areas results in significant findings for the organization, the social work profession, and various practice and organizational diversity literatures. Aboriginal participant descriptions of values, beliefs, and practices contribute to literature exploring contemporary Indigenous practice approaches that integrate traditional knowledge with professional practice. Consistent with some representative bureaucracy studies, participant descriptions of personal history, experience, practice, and motivation to work in MCFD indicate values, beliefs, and motivations strongly shared with their representative group: to reduce the number of Aboriginal children in government care and reconnect them to community. Aboriginal participant role tensions and dual accountabilities, resulting from their unique community/Ministry insider/outsider position, provide context to studies that explore tensions and contradictions that exist for diverse professionals working in their communities through mainstream organizations. Findings also contribute to studies in representative bureaucracy and other organizational diversity approaches concerned with the ability of diverse professionals to actively represent community interests. Organizational variables, such as low Aboriginal practice support, racism, cultural incompetence, hierarchical structure and decision making, risk-averse practice norms, poorly implemented rhetorical change initiatives, and institutional physical environments, among others, impede the ability of Aboriginal participants to actively represent community interests. Mitigating factors were found where some Aboriginal participants describe significant organizational support at the worksite level through dedicated culturally competent Aboriginal management and practice teams.<br>Graduate<br>0452<br>0617<br>0631<br>janerousseau@shaw.ca

Hart, Cornelia Susanna. "A micro level model for assessing community development towards improved wellbeing." Thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/24982.

Full text
Abstract:
Developments since the 20th century indicate that the wellbeing of communities makes for healthy national welfare in strong countries. Community wellbeing is thus a priority for policy makers and service providers. Conceptualization of a meaningful, holistic multidimensional measurement of community wellbeing at micro (community) level has been lacking. Such a concept and its measurement are essential when addressing social exclusion and development issues in the enhancement of community wellbeing is to produce worthwhile results. There is growing recognition that earlier understanding of community wellbeing failed to address development needs and processes at community level. Outsider stakeholder driven top-down one-dimensional community wellbeing (‘silo’) measurements did not address human development needs at community level. Meaningful measurement requires integrated frameworks addressing multidimensional issues conceptualizing wellbeing measurement at community level. Such measurement needs to be combined with the integrated inclusion of social capital influence through ‘insider-outsider’ partnerships. The research study purpose was to develop a community driven holistic, integrative wellbeing assessment model. This model could assist ‘insiders’ (community members) and ‘outsiders’ (policy makers, service providers and community development practitioners) in developing and implementing community driven initiatives towards improved wellbeing. The two main research questions were: 1) which macro level wellbeing assessment factors to consider in an aligned micro level wellbeing assessment? and 2) what is the associative relationship between wellbeing and social capital? Two descriptive sample surveys were conducted utilizing a structured questionnaire. Primary data findings contributed to finalization of a community level wellbeing assessment model. This model would enable estimation of the potential (push and pull) factors that influence the targeted success of suggested community development processes. The assessment model is community driven and owned, with spider and quadrant diagram graph tools indicating first the status of community wellbeing and social capital, then the associative relationships of wellbeing and social capital in ‘insider-outsider’ initiatives for wellbeing enhancement.<br>Development Studies<br>D.
