Abstract:
Background: Several measures have been developed to examine acute psychedelic effects (e.g. mystical-type and challenging experiences), but no measure assesses acute psychologically insightful experiences that may occur during psychedelic experiences. Aim: The purpose of this study was to develop and examine the psychometric properties of the Psychological Insight Questionnaire. Method: A cross-sectional survey study among psilocybin and LSD users. Respondents ( n=1661; Mage=22.9, standard deviation=8.5; Caucasian/White=83%; non-Hispanic=91%; men=72%; United States resident=66%) completed an Internet-based survey. Results: The Psychological Insight Questionnaire consists of 23 items with two subscales: (a) Avoidance and Maladaptive Patterns Insights and (b) Goals and Adaptive Patterns Insights. Construct validity of the Psychological Insight Questionnaire was supported by strong correlations of the Psychological Insight Questionnaire (and Avoidance and Maladaptive Patterns Insights and Goals and Adaptive Patterns Insights subscales) scores with the insight subscale of the Session Impacts Scale, and weak-to-moderate correlations with the Mystical Experiences and Challenging Experiences Questionnaires. Furthermore, Psychological Insight Questionnaire (and Avoidance and Maladaptive Patterns Insights and Goals and Adaptive Patterns Insights subscales) scores were moderately-to-strongly correlated with retrospectively reported increases in psychological flexibility, and well-being/life satisfaction that were attributed to a memorable psychedelic experience. Lastly, incremental validity was established showing that the Psychological Insight Questionnaire (and Avoidance and Maladaptive Patterns Insights subscale) scores predict unique variance in changes in psychological flexibility, and Psychological Insight Questionnaire (and Avoidance and Maladaptive Patterns Insights and Goals and Adaptive Patterns Insights subscales) scores predict changes in well-being and life satisfaction, beyond measures of acute mystical-type and challenging effects. Conclusions: The Psychological Insight Questionnaire has the potential to extend the understanding of the acute and enduring effects of psychedelics. Further longitudinal research is necessary to determine the long-term predictive validity of the Psychological Insight Questionnaire and to examine the role of psychological insight in predicting therapeutic outcomes.

Abstract:
Scientific insight is a cognitive and behavioral task. Although as a concept or a measure that sounds very familiar, so far not even one tool was found to measure the cognitive behavioral scientific insight (CBSI). Due to the lack of a questionnaire in this field, the researchers aimed to design a cognitive behavioral scientific insight questionnaire (CBSIQ) and to determine its validity. Therefore, the researchers designed the CBSIQ with 105 questions on a five-point Likert scale, and then 205 university faculty members were asked to complete the tool. The faculty members were recruited using stratified sampling and within each stratum using simple random sampling methods. The data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factorial analysis (CFA). Results show that CBSIQ ended with 33 questions constituting three factors: scientific thinking and applying scientific methods, scientific moral and commitment, and speaking in scientific terms. It is concluded that the CBSIQ is valid with relatively good fit indices. The implication of the CBSIQ is that it provides the key factors to diagnose individuals’ thinking obstacles; it can act as a framework to design instructional packages in order to teach people how to think insightfully and how to solve their problems scientifically or, in other words, how to acquire a scientific insight. Therefore, CBSIQ has the capability to function as a useful tool and as a remedy specifically to diagnose and resolve educational problems.

Abstract:
Goal-focused coaching is increasingly being used to help people set and reach personal and workplace goals. However, coaches' coaching skills are rarely measured. This exploratory study reports preliminary findings on the initial development and validation of a self-report measure, the Goal-focused Coaching Skills Questionnaire (GCSQ). Some participants also completed the Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale (Schutte et al., 1998) and the Insight subscale of the Self-reflection and Insight Scale ([SRIS-IN], Grant, Franklin, & Langford, 2002). Convergent, face validity and test-retest reliability were found to be good, and scores on the GCSQ distinguished between professional and nonprofessional coaches. Scores on the GCSQ were also related to measures of emotional intelligence and personal insight. Behavioral observations following a coaching session indicated a significant correlation between coachees' ratings of the coaches' skills and the self-reported skill ratings of the coaches themselves. Limitations of the study are discussed and future research suggestions presented.

Abstract:
This study aims to determine the difference in affect of dimensions of sibling relationship (warmth, relative power, conflict and rivalry) on psychological well-being in senior high school students at West Jakarta. Suggestions used in this research are quantitative with correlational type. The samples were 356 high school students at West Jakarta (132 males and 224 females), age 15-17, has sibling. Determination of the sample multistage random sampling technique. Data collected by forms of an questionnaire which adapted, that is Sibling Relationship Questionnaire (SRQ) organized by Furman and Buhrmester (1990) amount 48 items, and Scale of Psychological Well-Being (SPWB) by Ryff (1989) amount 84 items. Validity test uses expert judgement and instrument testing with the Pearson’s Product Moment. Realibility test using the Cronbach Alpha with SPSS v.25 obtained the reliability coefficient SRQ is 0,916 and SPWB is 0.669. Data analyzed using Pearson’s Product Moment and the hypothesis was tested by One-Way ANOVA with SPSS v.25. The results showed that warmth dimension had a positive effect on psychological well-being of students (0,178 > 0,05), relative power dimension had a positive effect on psychological well-being of students (0,109 > 0,05), conflict dimension had a negative effect on psychological well-being of students (- 0,105 > 0,05), and rivalry dimension had a negative effect on psychological well-being of students (-0,114 > 0,05). Hypothesis test by ANOVA results that Fcount > Ftable or 4,786 > 2,39, means sibling relationship has a different effect on psychological well-being in senior high school students at West Jakarta. However, based on the results of Pearson Correlation compared to the correlational coefficient table, was found that the effect of each diomension of sibling relationship on psychological well-being of students was very low. Tukey HSD test also shows that only rivalry dimension has a different effect from the other three dimensions (warmth, relative power, conflict) on psychlogicall well-being in senior high school students at West Jakarta.

Abstract:
Affective insight was defined as a subjective event occurring during intensive self-reflection. To study affective insight, seventy-nine individuals were presented instructions designed to encourage intensive self-reflection. Subsequently, they completed an open-ended questionnaire and a seventy-two-item true-false questionnaire describing their experience during self-reflection. Q-type factor analysis of the seventy-two-item questionnaire revealed four different types of reactions during the instructions: underdistancing, overdistancing, intellectual self-control, and apprehensive insight. An eight-item Affective Insight Scale (AIS) was developed which was independent of social desirability, which differentiated these four groups of participants, and which correlated positively with a judge's ratings of affective insight as indicated in responses to the open-ended questionnaire. Using the AIS, there was support for the hypothesis that affective insight is associated with imagery involvement, as measured by the Creative Imagination Scale, the Absorption Scale, and Rorschach M responses. There was also some support for the hypothesis that affective insight is associated with a preference for novel imagery, as measured by the Barron-Welsch Art Scale. Other trait measures predicted reactions which were conceptually and empirically independent of affective insight (e.g., intellectual self-control), indicating the importance of simultaneously studying different reactions during intensive self-reflection.

Abstract:
Insight impairment is commonly reported in psychosis patients and such impairment leads to poor outcome and it also causes burden to the family and caregivers. It is as yet unclear what causes unawareness of illness therefore it is essential to find out the key element to form this fundamental correlation. Wiffen and David proposed that self-reflective processing may have similar cognitive mechanisms as theory of mind processing, but this does not imply that the processes cannot be affected independently. Lysaker et al. demonstrated that better meta-cognitive skills, such as the ability to think about one’s own thoughts were related to better insight in schizophrenia patients. An increasing number of studies suggest that patients lacking insight into their own illness, were fully capable of recognizing the illness and symptoms in other patients. This indicated that insight impairment only happened at the self-recognition level. The ability of integrating information from outside world to the self is seen as a factor in gaining insight, therefore self-reflection ability are commonly seen as key features of awareness of mental illness. Previous studies of chronic schizophrenia patients show that their ability to accept the biological model of their own psychotic symptoms, assessed with Guided Illness Model Questionnaire (GIM) questionnaire, has a positive association with their neuropsychological function and awareness of illness However, it has not been common to use GIM questionnaire in early stage psychosis patients. This study aims are (1) use Guided Illness Model Questionnaire (GIM) to assess the self-reflection ability of early stage psychosis patients (2) explore the relationship between self-reflection and insight (3) Cognitive functions, particular executive functions, will be evaluated with self-reflection ability and insight. Insight will be measured by scale to assess unawareness of mental disorder (SUMD). Results show self-reflection ability is related with insight impairment and executive function, especially processing speed and attention contributes to self-reflection ability and poor insight. Further investigation reveals that self-reflection ability acts as a mediator for poor insight. This study concludes that executive functioning is the basic-order process for gaining insight and self-reflection could act as higher-order process as mediator for provoking insight for psychosis patients.

Abstract:
Motherhood subjects women to high demands that can lead them to maternal burnout. Although psychopathology in the perinatal period has been the subject of many studies, little research has focused on the difficulties experienced by women in their specific role as mothers afterwards. The purpose of this work is thus to provide scientific knowledge concerning the psychopathology of maternal burn-out, its experience and its evaluation.Study 1 is a qualitative exploratory study conducted with 4 focus groups. The goal was to explore concepts specifically related to maternity such as notions of sacrifice or ideal mother, as well as the expectations of the entourage. The results have shown that maternal exhaustion is rooted in tasks and responsibilities that are often related to maternal roles and peer pressure. Study 2 provides profiles of burnout mothers based on parental stress, environmental stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Four profiles were highlighted in the sample: the first characterized by difficulties with the child, the second showed a predominance of anxiety symptoms and great parental distress, the third had severe distress and the fourth had low levels of all symptoms. Study 3 aimed at creating and validating a maternal burnout questionnaire (MBS) to examine the prevalence of the mothers concerned. Factor analyzes retained a three-factor structure that accounted for 51% of the variance: negative emotive-behavioral manifestations, physical and emotional exhaustion, and sense of parental achievement. According to the threshold scores, 18.3% of mothers would have some degree of burnout and 6.6% could suffer from maternal burnout

Abstract:
Thesis presented for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY In the School of Education Faculty of Humanities University of Cape Town, 2006
There have been many national and provincial studies on children’s literacy levels in recent years in South Africa. However, none has determined the teachers’ own understandings of the core indicators of an effective reading teacher. During a preliminary feasibility study, the researcher was surprised to discover how many under-qualified teachers there were who had a limited professional understanding of current primary school reading instructions, approaches and practices. To assess more accurately these experienced teachers’ perceived professional competencies in teaching reading, the current study reports the development, refinement, validation and implementation of a conveniently self-administered profile of professional competencies designated the “Core Indicators of an Effective Reading Teacher Questionnaire” (CIERTQ). The researcher (the writer) gathered and analysed theoretically coherent feedback data from more than 1000 qualified, experienced and active reading teachers to establish a set of competencies describing teachers’ professional understandings of their pedagogical reading tasks. These clarified roles - as outcomes of the thesis - can be fed back to, and integrated with, teachers attending future literacy programmes and policies in economically developing countries, as well as serving to enable present and future teachers of reading to self-identify and improve possible aspects of their daily classroom activities. The present study is grounded in the social constructivist, socio-and psycho-linguistic theories originating from the works of Piaget (1969), Vygotsky (1930), Cambourne (2004) and Goodman (2005). Their foundational principles and literacies, together with relevant educator competencies specified and described in the South African National Education Department’s Norms and Standards for Educators document (2000) and in both the Foundation Phase (Grades R – 4) (1997) and Intermediate Phase (Grades 4 – 6) (1997) were defined and then applied to the derivation of all items in the CIERTQ. The CIERTQ instrument evolved through three phases of validation. First, the preliminary improvements in the questionnaire developed through seven formative versions as it passed through successive pilot trials with different small groups of self-selected reading teachers (teachers from grades 2 – 7, principals, subject advisors, learning support teachers, final year teacher training students and lecturers) from 1999 to early 2002. Phases two and three formed the major part of this research. Participants in phase 2 were introduced to Concentrated Language Encounter (CLE), an innovative reading programme implemented and expanded annually between 2001 and 2005, in 4900 new classrooms in 308 developing schools, in South Africa’s Western Cape region. Phase two involved further development and refinement of the CIERTQ. Version 8 was administered to 533 reading teachers in early 2002. It was re-administered to 360 teachers six months later. 173 of the pre-tested teachers were present at both the pre-and repeat workshops. After qualitative and quantitative analysis of the generated data, version 8 of the CIERTQ was improved and version 9 was reformulated in readiness for another large-scale trial. Phase three was the final administration of the CIERTQ, version 9, to a new relevant selfselected study group of 144 reading teachers who were attending the 2003 National Professional Diploma in Education course in teaching Literacy in the primary schools offered in the Education Faculty of the Cape Technikon. Throughout phases two and three several cautious varimax normalised factor analyses were engaged to refine and develop the questionnaire, within the context of teaching reading in economically developing schools in South Africa. The final instrument comprised 41 items which clustered into eight factors or dimensions of pedagogy. Particularly prominent factors with factor loadings between 0.50 and 0.72 were interpreted as (1) pedagogically strategic items (which included reading for meaning and application, reading for strategy development and other items of support); (2) reading for meaning and interpretation; and (3) reading for socialising (which included reading for research and surveillance). Almost all of the Cronbach alpha reliability coefficients for the eight sectors of versions 7 to 9 of the CIERTQ varied in the range of α = 0.70 – 0.87. Finally, the responses to the items were re-analysed and presented in relation to the foundational theories of literacy and to the South African’s Department of National Education, Revised National Curriculum Statement (2002) to produce an underlying coherent pattern of interpretation. Thus, overall, a valid and reliable instrument was produced, through refined consensus, with potential for use in augmenting further literacy research. Such future-orientated research is already a recently stated major policy focus of the current Minister of Education in South Africa for the years 2006 – 2009. This study presents a unique contribution to knowledge. The CIERTQ appears to have wide validity for primary schools that operate with multilingual reading cultures and diverse reading approaches, particularly in economically developing regions of South Africa and possibly beyond. The investigation makes recommendations for modifications to policy in terms of (a) introducing minor reform to the existing learning outcomes and (b) formulating an additional five new assessment standards for the South African’s Department of Education, Revised National Curriculum Statement (2002) Home Language document. For policy writers it may be useful to study the emergent well-defined sector names of the CIERTQ which convey a broader and a more holistic understanding of reading than those expressed in the policy document. The findings of the study answer the key research question: “Is it possible to develop, refine, validate and implement a profile of professional competencies of effective reading teachers for the South African context?” The answer is clearly in the affirmative, thereby corroborating and consolidating the current literacy theories of Cambourne (2004), and Goodman (2005) and the South African Norms and Standard for Educators (2000) document in South Africa’s unique educational context at the commencement of the 21st century.

Usually, experimental studies that are conducted to generate evidences on the different scientific fields produce many qualitative data to be analyzed by researchers. For instance, this is the case of defects lists generated from the software inspection activity, which defects consist of qualitative data that should be discussed and classified. This scenario was experienced during the Readers Project, where defects lists have token long time to be analyzed, sometimes hours or days, making the decisions about defects difficult. Moreover, feedback questionnaires deserved a careful analysis, since they carried relevant information about the experimental study. Aim: Driven by the described situation this research aimed to support the qualitative analysis conduction in an information-guided way, using visualization and text mining techniques to enable it. This approach allows software inspection defects described similarly be analyzed together, due to the use of these techniques, which may allow the homogeneity of the decisions about them. The same happens in the context of feedback questionnaires. Methodology: Based on the objective, the ways that visualization and text mining could contribute to become qualitative analysis more effective and efficient were investigated and designed. Considering it, the Insight tool was developed to enable the information-guided qualitative analysis. Experimental studies were conducted to validate and evaluate the approach on different contexts. Results: Four experimental studies were conducted: (i) a feasibility study conducted with text documents which gave evidences that the use of visualization and text mining met previous expectations and was feasible to be employed; (ii) a study in the context of software inspection which, although the quantitative data did not present statistical significance, the descriptive statistics and feedback questionnaires analysis gave evidences that visualization and text mining makes the qualitative analysis effective and efficient; (iii) a study in the context of questionnaires, which results were similar to the previous study; (iv) a case study in the context of qualitative analysis of long text documents which gave evidences about the utility and ease of use of the approach. Conclusion: Under the different contexts of evaluation, the Insight, an information-guided qualitative analysis approach that is based on visualization and text mining, gave evidences about the improvements on efficiency and effectiveness. Adding to its relevance in software engineering area, this research also contributes to other scientific fields, which often claim for technological support to conduct their research.

Full text
Abstract:

Over the last decade, much of the literature on insight in schizophrenia has reflected a biomedical viewpoint whereby insight is represented as a multidimensional entity. Such an observer-privileged perspective stands at odds with positions which also validate a sufferer's meaning-centered illness beliefs. The general aims of the thesis are to investigate the merit of this latter understanding, and consider its usefulness for case management. A pilot study involving twenty two participants was undertaken to (a) examine the dimensionality of an insight questionnaire, (b) examine the structure of illness belief narratives given by participants deemed to be insightful or non-insightful, and (c) provide a qualitative commentary on illness experiences. No underlying dimensional structure of insight was found, and a series of analyses failed to find narrative event differences in the illness stories given by the insight groups. The qualitative commentary suggested that lived experiences are of particular significance to a sufferer and also ground his or her self-representation. These findings suggested, firstly, the lack of relevance of a biomedical construct for a sufferer's self-report, and secondly, the importance of a higher-order appraisal to investigate adequately a sufferer's illness accounts. In response, Experiment Two adopted a hermeneutic analysis, incorporating a structural and a poetics level of evaluation, to investigate the illness explanations of twenty four participants across three time points. The analysis focused specifically on "complexity", "emphasis, and "adjustment" evaluations at a discourse structure level, and conversely, at a poetics level, upon illness and self-representations signified in "turning-point" experiences. The results supported the predictions that (a) sufferers place greater importance upon "everyday" understandings of symptomatic experiences in comparison to their biomedical knowledge and, moreover, (b) turning-points play a pivotal role in framing everyday illness appreciations. A model integrating narrative explanations and the dual cognitive processes thought to underlie insight-awareness of change and judgement of morbidity-is proposed. It is argued that this conceptualisation provides new possibilities for case management practice.

Hanwell, Heather. "Vitamin D Status and its Contribution to Multiple Sclerosis Risk: Insights Gained through the Study of Children with Central Nervous System Demyelination." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/33883.

Full text
Abstract:
Acute demyelination in children may be a monophasic illness or the sentinel attack of multiple sclerosis (MS) – a chronic inflammatory neurodegenerative demyelinating disease. MS risk is largely determined during childhood and vitamin D may protect against MS. The primary objective of this thesis was to evaluate vitamin D status in children presenting with acute demyelinating syndromes (ADS) as a potential contributor to MS outcome. The LIAISON “25 OH Vitamin D TOTAL” assay was validated to assess the biomarker of vitamin D status – serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations. Consecutive patients (<16 y) were enrolled at presentation with ADS and prospectively evaluated at 23 Canadian centres. MS was defined by a second clinical demyelinating event or by MRI evidence of new lesions over time. Cox proportional hazards regression models assessed risk of MS outcome as a function of serum 25(OH)D tertiles, accounting for factors associated with either MS risk or vitamin D status – age, sex, season, and HLA-DRB1*15 status. Of 211 children with 25(OH)D measured in sera obtained a median of 9 days from onset (interquartile range, 5 – 17 d; maximum 36 days), 20% (n = 41) were diagnosed with MS after 3.7 mos. (3.1 – 7.3 mos.). Risk of MS was lower in children with 25(OH)D levels in the highest tertile (≥ 74 nmol/L) at ADS versus those in the lowest tertile (<50 nmol/L) (HR 0.41; 95% CI 0.18 to 0.97, adjusted model). Children with higher circulating 25(OH)D concentrations at ADS have a lower risk of MS. Further evidence for a role of vitamin D insufficiency during childhood and adolescence contributing to MS risk comes from three MS patients with suboptimally managed pseudo-vitamin D deficiency rickets. Finally, a sun exposure questionnaire was validated in the latter part of this thesis for use in future research into determinants of vitamin D status and their association with risk of MS.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the principles of survey research as well as the issues and problems associated with different stages of the research design process. In particular, it examines questionnaire design, sample design, and interviewing techniques, along with the common sources of error that affect survey research and what can be done to try and avoid or minimize them. Although surveys have several weaknesses, they are widely used in political research to investigate a wide range of political phenomena. They combine two things: obtaining information from people by asking questions and random sampling. When done well, surveys provide an accurate and reliable insight into what ordinary people think about politics and how they participate in politics. The chapter considers the elements of a survey that need to be addressed, namely: questionnaire design, measurement error, sampling design, sampling error, and interview mode.

Abstract:
A clinical trial is a research study that assigns people or groups to different interventions and compares the impact of these on health outcomes. This chapter examines the design and delivery of clinical trials in anaesthesia and perioperative medicine covering the issues outlined below. The features of a high-quality clinical trial include well-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria, a control group, randomization, and blinding. Outcome measures may be broadly divided into counting the number of people who experience an outcome and taking measurements on people. The outcome measures selected for a clinical trial reflect the purpose of the study and may include ‘true’ clinical measures such as major postoperative complications or surrogate measures such as the results of a biochemical test. Outcome measures may be combined in a composite outcome. Assessment of health-related quality of life using a tool such as the SF-36 questionnaire is an important aspect of many clinical trials in its own right and also informs the economic analyses that may be embedded in a trial. Determining the number for recruits needed for a clinical trial requires both clinical and statistical insight and judgement. The analysis of a clinical trial requires a similarly sophisticated approach that takes into account the objectives of the study and balances the need for appropriate subgroup analyses with the risk of false-positive results. The safe and effective management of a clinical trial requires rigorous organizational discipline and an understanding of the ethical and regulatory structures that govern clinical research.

Abstract:
Changes in mood and/or cognition are common complaints in the elderly population. This chapter uses case studies to illustrate insights to make clinical assessment more efficient. These include assessing for cognitive impairment when depression is present and vice versa, being mindful of assuming that patients reporting cognitive difficulties are “worried well,” avoiding overreaction to very mild symptoms, assessing the four key cortical cognitive domains (amnesia, aphasia, apraxia, agnosia), assessing for subcortical dysfunction, assessing Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs), and understanding that depression in the elderly often presents with atypical symptoms. Brief cognitive instruments which can improve assessment include the Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ), Clock Drawing Test (CDT), and the Mini Cog. Brief depression instruments include the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDSS), and Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia (CSDD).

Full text
Abstract:
The long-term success of health intervention programs for self-management is often compromised by the difficulties felt by participants to maintain adherence to prescribed behavioral changes. Mixed methods research can expand understanding and the insights of complex health research problems such as self-management in chronic conditions. The purpose of this paper is to share key contents of a symposium focusing on the application of mixed methods research in the context of person-centered education, held during the 6th World Conference on Qualitative Research. More specifically, it aims at: 1) exploring examples of implementing mixed methods research in health interventions for self-management of chronic conditions and other health risks; 2) promoting insights and knowledge on the ‘why and how of combinations’ in mixed methods studies; and 3) exploring the valuable role of qualitative strands in mixed methods in the wider context of health research. Three studies are explored as examples of application of mixed methods in self-management programs, considering the experiences of participants for changing self-care behaviors and challenges faced for maintaining such changes. Convergent and explanatory sequential designs have been used, combining questionnaires and semi-structured interviews for data collection. Data analysis included procedures such as thematic analysis and descriptive statistics (examples 1 and 3), and thematic analysis and descriptive/inferential statistics (example 2). Results show how mixed methods designs can contribute to develop self-management strategies, to be considered in planning future interventions, and to expand understanding about their impact as well. Likewise, these examples emphasize why mixed methods can bring added value both to process and results of health research. Thus, exploring the application of mixed methods into a wider context is of utmost importance since the complexity of health phenomena is growing and requires equally complex research designs to capture them.

Bardel, Camilla, Christina Hedman, Katarina Rejman, and Elisabeth Zetterholm, eds. Exploring Language Education: Global and Local Perspectives. Stockholm University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.16993/bbz.

Full text
Abstract:
The overarching aim of this book is to offer researchers and students insight into some currently discussed issues at the Swedish as well as the international research frontline of Language Education in a selection of up-to-date work. Another aim is to provide teachers, teacher educators and policy-makers with input from research within the interconnected disciplines of Applied Linguistics, Language Education and Second Language Acquisition. The volume includes five examples of topical research on language education and the authors are internationally renowned scholars. The chapters are based on a selection of talks presented at the 1st ELE Conference (‘Exploring Language Education’), which was held at Stockholm University in 2018. Employing a broad thematic scope, the volume reflects the variety of perspectives on language education brought together at the conference by authors working in diverse areas of the field and in different parts of the world. With the first ELE conference the organizers wished to call attention to the intersection of the global and the local, in terms of linguistic and cultural diversity, which may inform both research questions and language education practices. Issues related to multilingualism, Global Englishes, and experienced tensions between research and practice are examples of generally shared issues that were brought up by many speakers. The chapters of the book represent this variety of themes and illustrate how different regions and communities are contingent on local prerequisites and circumstances, leading to a number of particular challenges and assets when it comes to language education. The chapters represent different parts of the broad array of research directions that can be discerned under the large umbrella of Language Education, zooming in on the Western context, specifically Sweden, Canada and the United States. Two of the plenary speakers from the conference, Nina Spada and John Levis contribute in the volume. In Spada’s text different ways to bridge the gap between research and practice in language education are discussed, an issue highly relevant to all of those interested in collaborative research between researchers and teachers. The second chapter, written by Levis, presents current research on phonology and the importance of pronunciation in second or foreign language communication. These two are followed by three chapters reporting on empirical studies. Amanda Brown and colleagues present their work on translanguaging in the English L2 classroom, giving an extensive overview of ideological stances from the last decades on the use of mother tongues vs. target language only in the language classroom. Liss Kerstin Sylvén reports on a recent study on very young Swedish learners of English, their exposure of English before school age and outside school and the role that this exposure plays for the development of English language proficiency. Finally, Gudrun Erickson and colleagues, present a questionnaire answered by a large number of modern language teachers in Sweden. The study explores the teachers’ answers on questions about their professional satisfaction, their use of the target language in the classroom, and the curricular status of foreign languages studied after English. Despite many critical points raised by these teachers, the survey reveals that they would not change profession, were they given the chance. The book ends with an Afterword by Stellan Sundh, University of Uppsala.

Abstract:
Framework- In the context of the need for the production of knowledge in low- and middle-income countries, as well as in high-income countries with their socially vulnerable populations and the concomitant, minimal availability of funding for international research, university researchers should innovate. Goal- Discuss critical methodological issues in the process of designing and implementing international online survey research. This is done in the context of responding to the need for innovation in data collection tools to expand their responsiveness to the international field and the participants’ characteristics. Chapter organization- The chapter is organized with the presentation of online international research, first presenting insights for an alternative and innovative design, then formulating questions to remotely collect international data, renewing a dialogue setting, and exploring issues of recruitment, attrition and participation. It also reports successful experiences of the internationalization of research, intellectual partnerships and shared successes in the process of creating, exchanging and translating knowledge in the context of global health and the democratization of knowledge. The experiences are related to qualitative inspired research implemented in the continental sphere (Africa, South and North America, and Europe) with the creation of survey questionnaires for an exploration of narratives, experiences, and decisions. Final consideration- The mobilization of researchers’ social and professional networks, in addition to the constant reformulation of intellectual partnerships in research, are today the most common strategies to face the current challenges in academia. Innovation for methodological advances in audacious design for unpredictable fieldwork may require the revisiting of epistemological grounds. Emerging issues in this type of research, such as “research fatigue”, should be considered.

Abstract:
AbstractFlash floods are unexpected, localized flood events that occur when an exceptional amount of rain falls happens over a short period of time. In South Asia, it is mostly disastrous, for example, in 2017 flash floods killed approximately 1200 people from India, Nepal, and Bangladesh. However, it is also common in Dhaka megacity, Bangladesh due to its geographic location, monsoon climatic condition and surrounding rivers. Though it is impossible to avoid them, the losses and damages of hazards can be reduced effectively by using appropriate techniques. This study aims to determine the responsible factors and measure the household vulnerability to flash flood as a tool of mitigation. The study has been conducted based on primary data. Therefore, data were collected from both slum and non-slum population to cover the entire urban habitats. Data were collected with a structured questionnaire based on five factors (social, economic, institutional, structural, and environmental) of vulnerability to flash flood. The key feature of this paper is to provide an insight into real picture of vulnerability to flash flood for urban habitants. Moreover, this practical approach is useful to quantify hazard-induced vulnerabilities not only for Dhaka megacity but also for other cities of the globe.

AbstractThis chapter presents the statistical (econometric) identification of the most important success drivers of the projects in the sample. The chapter first compresses the 41 questionnaire variables (which contain duplication for robustness sake) into 5 success factors. Then, regressions identify which success factors drive the probability of project completion and which factors drive budget and schedule overruns (for the completed projects). The economic levers are huge—the regressions identify that moderately improving the success factors can double completion chances and save hundreds of millions of dollars. The role of corruption becomes apparent: not only does it depress completion chances and inflate the budgets, but it also compromises the effectiveness of the other success factors.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter aimed at identifying skills required for transitioning into green economy in the transport sector, preferred careers and institutions, challenges that could hinder transition to green economy in transport sector in addition to suggesting policy recommendations in case study carried out Limpopo Province. Case studies are required to provide insight into the nature of the current situation with respect to transition to green economy in the transport sector and providing knowledge and evidence on skills required transition to green transport. The study followed a qualitative and exploratory methodology involving administering questionnaire to purposively selected participants and stakeholder workshop aimed at discussing and debating on required knowledge and skills for transition to green economy in Limpopo Province, identifying challenges and policy recommendations. A total of twenty questionnaires were completed while 56 delegates from different departments and organisations participated in the workshop. A wide range of specific skills needs within technical, management skills and knowledge on techniques and skills on innovation and management for change categories, in the transport sector and their value chains were identified. Many of the skills required in the transport sector correspond to those required for the general green economy indicating that the transport sector will also benefit through implementation of the green economy in all sectors in the province. Most people chose environmental science as the most suitable career to follow in ensuring green economy. The respondents recognized the importance of mainstreaming the green economy at all levels of study. Challenges that could hinder transition to green economy include inadequate training and awareness programs, lack of existing skills directly related to the green economy at work places and inadequate funding for skills development in the green economy. Some of the policy recommendations include green growth capacity building for public administrators and policy makers, knowledge and skills transfer to be identified following the value chain based on the jobs required for each mode of green transport, development of methodology to mainstream green economy in all work places, mainstreaming green economy at all education levels, government to fund policy and legislation, and research and innovation related to green transport.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter focuses on the issue of shared physical custody (SPC) in the broader context of coparenting interventions. To identify if and how these interventions address the issue of SPC, we provide a systematic overview of the currently available types of coparenting interventions after marital dissolution. To be selected, the interventions had to be published in peer-reviewed journals, target separated or divorced parents, integrate work on coparenting, and include a custody focus within the intervention curriculum or as a targeted outcome. Finally, they had to be subject to empirical evaluation. As a second step, using a case study, we investigate how the issue of SPC may be addressed before divorce, during couple therapy. We describe the therapy sessions to highlight the factors that may protect or undermine the development of a cooperative coparenting relationship while separating, and eventually create a positive shared-custody scenario after divorce. We also analyse the couple’s progress regarding individual symptomatology and coparenting satisfaction based on self-reported questionnaires and on the quality of their observed coparenting interactions. From a therapeutic perspective, this chapter aims to deepen our understanding of the challenges and opportunities of coparenting during and after separation and its intertwinement with the issue of SPC.

Abstract:
Abstract A great diversity of definitions of creative tourists exist, ranging from those who refer to visitors of dance, art, or handicraft workshops, to those who include people who take up temporary artistic residences to practice their creative expression and develop their art forms. In recent decades, we have observed the emergence of a new generation of travellers. These tourists are increasingly seeking co-creation processes, leading to more relational forms of cultural tourism, and active participation in creative experiences. This study revolves around the answers of the participants in the questionnaire of CREATOUR. We found that creative tourism activities can attract travellers to a location: both domestic (76%) and international tourists (64%) indicated that the primary reason for visiting the locale was to participate in the creative tourism experience. This was an important finding for us given that the locations were small cities and rural areas and some were quite remote. These findings suggest the potential for repeat visitors and the need to continually evolve activities to re-attract their interest as well as the value of operating in a network where travellers' participation in a creative tourism activity at one location can lead to participation in other activities elsewhere. This potentially virtuous cycle can strengthen awareness and connectedness among organizers of creative tourism activities in smaller places and rural areas.

Abstract:
The earliest forms of psychiatric assessment were based on direct interviews with patients, on reported observations by those who knew the patient, and on direct observations by attendants—later nurses—in the care setting. Attempts to codify these forms of assessment had begun over 90 years ago, as illustrated by the ‘Behavior Chart’ of Kempf. The present range of structured psychiatric assessment methods grew from the 1950s in association with the introduction of neuroleptic medication and the development of psychiatric rehabilitation programmes. The two most frequently used types of systematic and structured assessment used in both clinical practice and research continue to be questionnaires and ratings. Their value lies in the systematic coverage of relevant content, and the potential for comparing scores across individuals and groups and over time. This section covers assessment methods that are appropriate for both self-report by patients and others—questionnaires—and observations and judgements made by others about the patient and their immediate circumstances—rating methods. This section will also briefly describe behavioural approaches to assessment of clinical relevance. Questionnaires offer the respondent a preset range of written questions covering the area of clinical interest, such as depression. The questions are usually completed by marking one of a set of provided response categories (forced-choice questions), but may be completed by the patient writing their own response in free text. Self-report and ‘self-monitoring’ methods are similar to the latter form of questionnaire, in that the patient completes a diary or pre-marked sheets. These are more open-ended, and any associated thoughts of the patient may be included. Self-report measures are used widely in cognitive behavioural interventions. Ratings are judgements about the quality or characteristics of a defined attribute or behaviour, completed subjectively, or on the basis of direct observation of the behaviour in question. While questionnaires are usually self-completed, ratings may be completed by one person with respect to another person. In psychiatric practice, ratings include those made by professional staff, often a nurse or care worker, or by a family member or informal carer, about a patient. Ratings and behavioural measures have a special use in the assessment of disturbed or bizarre behaviour, where the patient may have little insight or knowledge of the nature or degree of their disturbance, which may pose a major ongoing management problem, or a barrier to their placement in the community. An example of such a measure is the Aberrant Behavior Checklist. This is a 58-item behavioural rating scale completed by an informant, with the content covering five subscales: irritability, agitation, and crying; social withdrawal and lethargy; stereotyped behaviour; hyperactivity and non-compliance; and inappropriate speech.

Abstract:
This paper evaluated students’ experiences and perceptions of using an online simulated virtual environment, known as the Island, for project-based work within an online master’s level introductory statistics course. Forty-two students responded to an Island questionnaire which rated their level of agreement to three aspects of using the Island - engagement, ease of use and contributes to understanding. Students were also asked to provide qualitative comments and five students participated in semi-structured interviews. Qualitative feedback was analysed to help explain the results from the quantitative questionnaire. In conclusion, perceptions of the use of the Island for project-based assessment were very positive. Qualitative feedback provided insight into how the Island may help to develop students’ statistical thinking.

Abstract:
This paper is an attempt to explore the barriers to integrating sustainability into construction project management in developing countries. To this end, a comprehensive review of the literature is conducted, as a result of which a list of 30 barriers is culled from existing studies. The list of barriers is subsequently assessed in terms of relative importance index (RII) through a survey questionnaire administered to Iranian construction industry experts, resulting in a dataset of 176 completed questionnaires. Findings bring to light the most influential barriers to incorporating sustainability in construction projects for a developing country. These were: (1) lack of understanding of the potential selfbenefits of proactivity and high economic risks that unsustainable practices may carry, (2) inadequate assessment of risks and a silo-based approach, namely, insufficient cooperation among practitioners, research institutions and environmental organisations and (3) the lack of a systematic approach to planning and acting for the fulfilment of sustainability goals. As one of the first studies in its kind, the paper offers invaluable insight for researchers, practitioners, and policy makers, in supporting the transition of construction project management practices towards fulfilling sustainable development goals.

Abstract:
The second wave of Covid-19 pandemic in Brunei has forced all education providers to resort to online teaching and learning again, including Politeknik Brunei. This study aims to gain some insights of students’ and lecturers’ perspectives of online learning activities. The online questionnaire links were sent via email, where 989 students and 92 lecturers from across all schools under the polytechnic responded. Descriptive and inferential analysis were employed for all data collected. Overall, the findings suggest that the effectiveness of online learning at Politeknik Brunei is at a moderate level with a mean of 23.8 and a standard deviation of 4.13 (Cronbach’s α=0.71). There is no statistical significant difference in effectiveness of online learning among five different study focus groups as revealed by Tukey-Kramer post-hoc test. Meanwhile, the effectiveness of online teaching is also at a moderate level with a mean of 28.8 and a standard deviation of 3.72 (Cronbach’s α=0.68). The results also show that while the main challenge is internet instability for everyone, the main benefit is time and/or energy saved from travelling. Although online learning poses many limitations to everyone, it is probably high time to reconsider a permanent shift in the post pandemic education setting to prepare ourselves for the new norm. Abstract:
In this paper we present the preliminary results of a study covering 217 written comments submitted in the formal university SET questionnaire of two undergraduate physics lectures for engineering students. Concerning the SET-metrics, one of the lectures was rated as critical, while the other lecture had good results. The analysis is based on the praise and criticism framework elaborated by Hyland/Hyland (2001) for written feedback. Our findings, which also relate written feedback to quantitative variables and contrast the results between critical and good evaluations, provide a deeper insight for both, teachers and educational developers, on how to interpret written comments in a quality management process.

Abstract:
Women experience a range of physical and emotional changes in pregnancy, which can impact upon their car travel. A major problem is vehicle entry and egress. This paper presents the systems approach used to gain insight into getting in and out of the car during the gestation period. The systems approach involves defining the system in terms of its objectives, subsystems, environment and interactions. A model of a vehicle system is used to interpret the problems and experiences of entry and egress reported by pregnant women. The analysis is based upon a questionnaire and anthropometric measurements. Understanding the vehicle system helps to identify both how the changed attributes of pregnant women can affect the interactions of the system, and the influence of the system environment. The systems approach is used to present an analysis of vehicle entry and egress so that automotive designers can make informed design decisions.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to identify the factors influencing the adoption of cloud computing. The Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) Framework was utilized to analyze the organizational-level adoption of cloud technology using three contexts that might influence decision-makers to use such technology. A quantitative research approach was employed to analyze the hypothesis. Data was collected via a questionnaire-based survey involving 110 participants comprising mid-level managers and IT specialists from a public health organization. The inferential sta-tistical results show that among the three types of context, certain factors influenced decision makers to adopt cloud computing technology. These factors are relative advantage, compatibility of technology, management support, techno-logical readiness, and competition pressure. This research provides fruitful insight and contributes to the existing body of knowledge in the field of technology management, specifically cloud computing technology, and has research and practical implications.

Abstract:
Project-based education in combination with problem-based learning has been very successful, and has contributed to the popularity of engineering design education among students at technical universities. The close connection to industrial problems by the use of industry-connected projects has boosted this popularity still further and to get an insight of future working environments after graduation is very inspiring for the students. The curriculum of the Machine Design capstone course at KTH Department of Machine Design covers the whole process from idea generation to manufacturing and testing a final prototype. A major part of the course consists of project work where students develop a product prototype in close cooperation with an industrial partner or with a research project at the department. This means that a major part of the course uses project-based learning as a teaching strategy. In addition, a model-based design methodology is introduced which enables the students to evaluate and “experience” many different behaviors of the product using digital models in a virtual environment. In this way, students can see that many undesirable concepts and flaws can be avoided even before a prototype is manufactured. This paper evaluates the use and learning outcome of model-based design in a capstone course in the Engineering Design MSc program at KTH Department of Machine Design. The approach has been used during a period of three years and the effect on the students’ learning has been evaluated by a questionnaire after each course. I this paper we compare the results of these questionnaires and discuss implications and general conclusions about this learning approach.

Abstract:
Urban public space is an essential element of the urban environment that contributes to the quality of urban life called to create a certain dynamic, places of life, places of meeting, of use, of conviviality, and of social cohesion, providing multiple environmental and health benefits. This urban space can become even more critical in times of crisis such as the current COVID-19 pandemic, where citizens face increased health and economic stress. As part of our study, we conducted questionnaire surveys during the period in which restrictive measures were imposed in response to the pandemic in Annaba city- Algeria, which has many public urban spaces (gardens, green spaces, squares…), these surveys were intended for users on their attendance and their perception of these spaces since the onset of this pandemic COVID-19, and the challenges they see for the future. Therefore, the findings of our study demonstrated the footprint of COVID-19 on urban spaces and their frequentation, as well as preventive measures in order to gain insight into urban planning and conception.
