Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to increase the understanding of how senior management executives experience insider ownership. An additional aim is to investigate if there is a difference of the experiences of senior management executives with a Swedish cultural background in comparison to the experiences of senior management executives with other cultural backgrounds, with regards to insider ownership. By distribution of a questionnaire, partly through telephone interviews and in part via email, empirical primary data is gathered. The empirical findings indicate that insider ownership has a broad area of use and that senior management executives experience insider ownership as a source of motivation. Further, the study indicates that insider ownership is experienced as a motivational source regardless of cultural background since the study sees tendencies of that personal characteristics outweigh the cultural permeation. The findings of this study imply tendencies that show many different positive effects of insider ownership. For example, insider ownership could be a motivational source, a governance tool for creating trust among employees and other interlinked stakeholders. This could in turn mean that insider ownership contributes to a more cooperative working environment. Also, insider ownership has been portrayed as a possible catalyst for increased motivation. Thus, insider ownership could be a source for increased individual performance, and thus, company performance. Additionally, one of the major findings of this study is the tendencies that could prove to be of interest for future research, for example; that the feeling of fear might be superior to the feeling of greed

Abstract:

Since the Devonian Period, 360 million years ago, trees have been foundational for the survival of aerobic life. Today, most humans relate to trees through the idea, material and commodity of wood. This understanding is primarily informed by its use as a building material: the formal attributes of its grain pattern read to assess structural integrity and aesthetic applications. I think of these marks as autonomous and unique natural drawings, documenting time in a scale different from our lifespan. Wood’s composition of cellulose and lignin create patterns that record temporal fluctuations in precipitation and the unique soil compounds of each tree’s growth site as a codex. As an MFA candidate, I used woodworking techniques to explore the relationship between temporality and materiality. Along the way, I became interested in the reductive carving techniques of woodturning as a metaphor for this investigation: cutting through layers of time. Small segments of wood were laminated together in mathematical patterns and turned to reveal parabolic grids on the interior and exterior surface of each object. This study led me to consider the limitations that traditional art display conventions impose on the viewer’s perception of an artwork, and to the realization of the Thoughtitarium; an eight-foot diameter fiberglass hemisphere that hovered above the gallery floor in architectural scale.

Abstract:
The artist discusses her Master of Fine Arts exhibition, Inside, Outside, In-Between, held at the Carroll Reece Museum on the campus of East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee, from February 26 through March 13, 2008. The works included in this exhibition are a collection of paintings that employ the use of traditional and non-traditional materials to explore the connections between place and memory. These pieces are investigations into materiality and process, combining local beeswax, sticks, garden soil, charcoal, and ashes together with oil, shellac, oil pastel, pencil, and other traditional artist's materials. Ideas discussed include materiality, process, composition, cropping, collective and selective memory, landmarks, archaeology, gardening, borders and boundaries, parietal Paleolithic art and the art of the Abstract Expressionists, ritual, alchemy, time, liminality, and the influences of Michelle Stuart, Mary Frank, and Cai Guo-Qiang.

Abstract:
The human voice is significant to culture and communication and its agency differs across the heterogeneous discourses within which it is listened to and produced. This thesis assesses what the voice does in Fine Art practice where it is under-theorised but often used by artists. The research questions are: how does a voice register as a material and an object (physical material presence), rather than equating only to the subject who produces it? And how can an artist produce a direct address with their voice? The thesis examines the nature of direct vocal address in Fine Art practice with the installation Trialogue (2013) and with the discussion of case studies that privilege the voice. Trialogue uses three screens to emphasise the action of voices and vocal genres. Four single screen video works are played over three screens during which the audience hears a jazz singer, children and my voice. We are familiar with our voices presenting our selves, but in Fine Art practice the voice is reproduced, and behaves as a material and object. Artworks and theories divide around the reduction and parameters of voice as production of a human subject and as an object in the material world. Therefore the voice is described with a combination of phenomenological, psychoanalytical and cultural theories. The thesis critically examines theories of Dolar (2006), Ihde (2007), Sperber and Wilson (1995), and Bakhtin (1986) in relation to the phenomenon of the voice in Fine Art practice. The thesis describes how the genre, physical space, consequences of reproduction, and action of listening are emphasised by critical Fine Art practice. Bakhtin describes all utterance as having a genre, and phenomenological theories relate voice to perceptual hierarchy and its relationship with the visual realm. The voice is described as a partial object in psychoanalytical theory. The idea of palimpsest is used as a partial space to situate the object voice. The chapters theorise the voice in Fine Art practice as: object and reproduction; the relationship voices have with images in moving image art practice; and the voice and self.

Growing up in a bicultural household, navigating the F train as well as mountain creeks, studying culture and then participating in its production, these are some of the idiosyncrasies that I bring to my work. My investigations are rooted in combining a rediscovery of the sensuousness of the natural world and an investigation of the poetics of everyday life. Choosing materials and situations within the realm of the everyday, I'm interested in a transformation that suggests the infinite potential and worth in all things. The resulting objects have identities as complex as my own. They are ridiculous and serious, normal and magical, and confident in their awkwardness. Abstract:
I feel something on the INSIDE of my body, a feeling of nagging worry. It is an emotion equally important as every other emotions we humans have. But the feeling of worry is very complex as it may come in different shapes and sizes, and how much it affects us differs from person to person. For some people thoughts of worry escalates and becomes overwhelming which causes an emotion of anxiety which in turn could lead to a panik attack. In my exam project and my artistic presentation I focus on that emotion of anxiety when you panic and you loose control. The reason for this emotion could be many but I am interested in how expectations and demands both from ourselves, others and society leads to us trying to keep it all together, stay in control and/or wanting to show an OUTSIDE that everything is fine.  Through social media, internet and commercials we are all exposed to information which tells us how to achieve ”the perfect life” and images of people having an eventful life. All of this creates expectations. In society today worry and anxiety are emotions that are connected to something negative and is often seen as a weakness. In our attempt to hide the emotion of worry and anxiety we communicate to the people on the outside that everything is fine, by for example using jewelry, make-up and clothes to show a beautiful facade almost like putting on a shield before we go outside to meet the world. Why do we do that? And for whom? I chose the necklace as the traditional piece of jewelry to symbolize beauty, stability and to communicate to people that you have everything under control and that everything is fine. The necklace  becomes part of the facade that will stand for beauty, tradition and a measure of prosperity. This is what you show on the outside of the body but on the inside that is where you hide away your worries and anxiety which is built up due to expectations. Expectations which in time will be too many and too much for you to handle, the same as with anxiety. One part of my artistic presentation is to try and visualise how these expectations are put upon you while you are trying to control them and at the same time show off a stable and beautiful outside. But no matter how hard you try to communicate that everything is fine and trying to keep everything together, in the end, what you feel on the inside of the body will seep out to the outside. I am making a attempt to show how this eventually makes you loose control. The beautiful necklace is impossible to sustain which also makes me question my own traditional view of what a necklace is. Another part of my artistic presentation is about value and to make objects that could be used as conversation pieces to start a dialog about worry and anxiety. The materials I am using symbolises the feeling when anxiety takes control of your body and staines the individual. The aim of this exam project is to raise thoughts about a complex emotion, norms in society, and to investigate what a necklace is or could be. Jewelry is a way of communicating with other people and one way to show who you are or whom you want to be. As a contemporary art jeweller I am exploring my topic in a conceptual way.

Morris, Julia Malone. "Childhood loneliness| The creative construction of self and world inside story and beyond." Thesis, Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3601337.

Full text
Abstract:

The affective domain of loneliness is an essential creative force in children's lives. Unwanted solitude, although disparaged in our culture, is a theme that takes center stage in stories. This study explores the ways in which Loneliness as an active archetypal presence operates in positive ways in children's imaginations as revealed by children's literature, folklore, film, and myth. The isolated orphan or banished outsider lost within the wilds of narrative makes and enriches her emergent world using the tools of the body, imagination, and voice. Utilizing the modalities of visual art, dramatic play, and lyrical storytelling, inventive companions and elaborate landscapes are constructed which succeed in soothing and expanding the child's psyche.

Employing the archetypal psychology approach, this study imagines (and personifies) Loneliness as the youngest of three sisters: Solitude, Aloneness, and Loneliness. Although these three siblings share similar genetic traits and are woven together in countless tales, Sister Loneliness stands apart as a unique archetypal actor. She is far more restless and angst-ridden than her sisters. Dissatisfied with her companionless state, she holds within her a yearning—the desire/eros—to construct a new cosmology filled with inventive possibilities. This dissertation qualitatively describes these vast and varied universes.

In conjunction with an analysis of well-known (and lesser-known) children's stories, the research examines Loneliness's real-world creations in the classroom and therapeutic settings, including children's drawings, sand play constructions, stories, and poetry. Further areas of focus are the role of the adult in solitary geographies, the gendered-base response to loneliness, and the transitional object as a vital compass on the path towards individuation.

Key Words: loneliness, creativity, children's literature, child development, folklore.

Guo, Jianyong. "'Inside painting', as used for Chinese snuff bottles, suggested as a new model for contemporary glass art." Thesis, University of Sunderland, 2016. http://sure.sunderland.ac.uk/10274/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research has been an art-based practice-led project focused on Chinese 'inside painting' in glass art. It has attempted to create a 'new model' for Chinese traditional inside painting through the creation of contemporary glass artworks. This is timely because Chinese academic glass teaching is emerging in universities, and cast glass techniques dominate the curriculum. The research offers an example of how traditional methods might be revitalized by one artist to extend the options for Chinese University glass teaching. Potential recipients are glass artists and students as well as curators and collectors. This research mainly used studio-based art practices, inspired by traditional inside painting of Chinese snuff bottles, traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy, influenced by Taoism, together with Western glass painting, printing and calligraphy in order to reduce some of the existing limitations of traditional methods. The methods of glass making for this research covered blowing, casting, flame work, fusing, slumping, incorporating 'outside' painting combined with 'inside' painting, and printing combined with inside painting. Traditional inside painting techniques have developed over more than 200 years into a popular form of Chinese folk art, often based on glass snuff bottles with painted decoration on the inside. The craftsmen who make these pieces usually pay more attention to inside painting skills and overlook their own artistic expression. The designs used tend to be repetitive and copies of existing designs from other media such as ink painting or photographs. In this research, a body of inside painted glass works was produced to show how the glass form and painted content were combined. This work also helped to establish possible ways to reduce the limitations of traditional inside painting of Chinese snuff bottles. Contextual aspects were supported by study visits to key collections and conferences, and interviews with other makers and collectors. It is hoped that this research will promote the development of traditional inside painting and lead to inside glass painting developing as a strand of the contemporary Chinese glass arts.

Nting, Rexon Tayong. "Sarbanes-Oxley Act, insider trading and earnings management." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2009. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1308/.

Full text
Abstract:
The empirical motivation of this dissertation is the increasing importance of financial market’s regulation pursuant of the Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX). There is currently incomplete knowledge on the relationship between insider trading and earnings management on the one hand and earnings management and firm performance on the other in light of the recent regulatory intervention (SOX). Moreover, the relevance of political regulation of financial markets has not yet been thoroughly investigated. The research aims of the dissertation are: 1) To evaluate the effectiveness of financial market regulation (SOX) on Insider trading and Earnings management 2) To empirically examine how the different techniques used to manage earnings influence firm performance in light of the recent regulatory intervention (SOX). Both tests suggest ways in which investors can examine and unravel a comprehensive set of earnings management signals and their impact on either insider trading or future firm performance. The thesis is divided into two main empirical chapters: The first main empirical chapter (chapter 4) discusses insider trading and earnings management in light of the recent regulatory intervention mandated by the SOX. The second main empirical chapter (Chapter 5) discuss changes in earnings management and firm performance relationship in light of the recent regulatory intervention as prescribed by SOX. In an attempt to obtain a comprehensive understanding of several conceptual issues, the different techniques used to manage earnings are employed including, discretionary accruals techniques, real earnings management and the probability of financial statements distortion as measured by the Beneish M-Score. Overall, the focus is on managers of S&P 500 companies, holders of private information about the firm’s prospects, preparers and senders of financial reports and investors and analysts as receivers and users of these financial statements. Findings on the relationship between insider trading and earnings management in light of the recent regulatory intervention suggest that after the Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2002, managers are less likely to time their trade and boast earnings to benefit at the expense of outside investors. Furthermore, under stricter regulations, market participants detect and react to insider trading and earnings management practices. Findings on the relationship between a comprehensive set of earnings management signals and firm performance suggest that there have been greater monitoring of financial III statements in the Post SOX era. When firms attempt to manage earnings during periods of intense market regulation, investors discount this through disappointing stock returns. Overall, the results suggest that there should be broad based approach in analysing financial statements.

Abstract:
When world and wars changes, can then the "traditional" operational art sustain? In this paper, operational principles defined from the Israeli operational art from past wars are applied to the Second Lebanon War, July 12 to Aug 14 2006. The aim is to describe and discuss the dynamics and conditions for the operational art. In theory, operational art is influenced by strategy, tactics and theory but also by a host of other subjective and objective factors. The survey highlights that the traditional Israeli operational principles were used in a various extent but only at the end of the war a "traditional" operational concept is identified. The results show that the basic conditions of operational principles must be fulfilled for the concept to be used and that there must be consistency between the strategic requirements and the limits and conditions that the subjective and objective factors sets. The survey also shows that changes in concepts require inputs from results, strategy and other factors. The strategic insight and understanding of its impact is crucial to whether military action is or becomes relevant. The value of Operational Art lies in its ability, in a tactical environment, to translate the strategic objective to an operational idea. This idea shall be based on an operational concept with principles that are uniquely suited for the current operation. The key is, under current conditions and with available resources, to dynamically balance and manage the affecting factors in current time and place to achieve the strategic objectives of the operation.

Abstract:
This thesis discusses the role of side openings in museums, in relation to users’ visiting experience. The research particularly focuses on the feature of view, analysing if the connection with the outsideenvironment provided through windows, results in an enriched museum’s experience and enhancedcultural identity. The analysis is based on the case study of the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, wherethree rooms with stronger, moderate and weaker connection with the outside environment have beenevaluated through visitors’ surveys. Results show that the public revealed considerable awarenessabout windows and their landscape and yet the view was rarely considered a distracting feature. Theavailable literature on daylight in museums hardly includes view among the acknowledged daylightbenefits, and, also due to the difficulty in controlling the daylight intake, side openings have gained abad reputation in the museum field. However, as in the analysed case study, the view was consideredby many as an enriching part of the visiting experience, this thesis calls for further research on therole of view in exhibition rooms and on how to include it properly in museums’ design.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:

I continuously ask myself how I can justify even the most arbitrary beliefs that I hold, and in relation to this, how knowledge and beliefs are communicated and obscured continuously in our day-to-day lives. I am curious about how we come to decide what's what in today's society, as we continuously navigate our way through the overabundance of images and words that surround us. For my degree work I have created instructions for others to follow, as a method to generate material that triggers inquiry around how we think within a given structure. The report outlines my artistic process and gives a background to the project, taking into account theory deriving from Western philosophy (in particular epistemology) and instructions as an art form. I end with reflections and concluding thoughts about the project.

The disappearance of people is a complex phenomenon that raises ambiguous feelings such as hope/despair, sadness, guilt, anger and helplessness. This study aimed to investigate the impact of the disappearance of a child, under unknown circumstances, from the mothers` perspectives. Eleven mothers with children disappeared mysteriously participated in the survey, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, between 2002 and 2005. The children were between 11 months and 11 years old at the time of the disappearance. Semi-structured interviews were performed and, from the technical analysis of content, the data were grouped into 4 categories, named: 1) impact of the disappearance, 2) relationship with husband / partner / boyfriend / father of the child, 3) relationships with other children, 4) facing the disappearance: facilitators and complications. It was found that, before the sudden and mysterious disappearance of their children, all participants initially had reactions of denial, shock, numbness, despair and fear. After the initial shock, reactions of anxiety and feelings of guilt, helplessness, disbelief, sadness and anger were said, as opposed to feelings of hope, faith, determination and certainty of meeting again the disappeared child. The interviewees also felt helplessness by their husbands / partners, because they hoped to express their mourning in the same way as them, considering them unsuitable and negligent for not acting equally. Regarding to the other children, note that, if on the one hand, some mothers have become overprotective, there are cases where they neglected them. It is concluded, finally, that for these mothers, factors such as the lack of certainty about how and where the child is, the lack of rituals, the indefinite extension of the situation and the judgment of other people (especially by other mothers) can contribute negatively to the process of coping. Furthermore, the formation of groups with mothers of missing children and the possibility of sharing feelings presents itself an important resource for the restructuring and reorganization of these women.

Abstract:
This dissertation is "A Collective Case Study of Veterans Inside an Arts and Crafts Room and Their Perceptions Regarding Empowerment." This research examined to what degree art making, and in what ways a community of learning contributed to veterans' self-worth and empowerment through their creative activities and interactions inside an arts and crafts room at the VA hospital in Dallas, Texas. Furthermore, an essential reason for this study is to examine veterans in the arts and crafts environment to explore whether their experiences were important, meaningful, and empowering, and especially important in this regard are the interactions among veterans. Empowerment in this context is defined as gaining self-esteem and motivation within oneself. This includes becoming more confident and positive, as well as gaining the ability to learn about one's own identity. It also described how the interactions between the participants are shaped by the social contexts within which they come together. Using post-modern feminist theory, narrative inquiry and care theory, this dissertation describes the ways that the processes and products of creative activity bring empowerment through dialogue and personal stories while using the component of caring during teaching and learning.

Adams, Morgan Ross. "Themes and theories of the Insider Trading. The 2004 Security Services Act." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/4626.

Full text
Abstract:
According to Blackman et al, 'insider trading' initially referred 'to the sale and purchase of a company's shares, debentures or other securities by persons connected or associated with the company (the 'insiders'), who are in possession of confidential, 'price-sensitive' information gained as a result of that association and not available to (other) shareholders or to the general public.' The practice of insider trading was first made illegal in South Africa with the introduction of s 233 of the Companies Act 61 of 1973. By the criminalising of insider trading, the conduct of an insider trader has been classified as a wrong against society. At present, the relevant provisions of the Securities Services Act of 2004 regulate such practices. The Act has repealed the Insider Trading Act 135 of 1998, which had previously governed criminal and civil liability in terms of the offence. The insider trading provisions of the Act form part of corporate governance regulations, which are aimed at improving the efficiency of financial markets. This dissertation focuses on the significant transformation that South Africa's insider trading laws have gone through since this practice was first outlawed in 1973. It aims to tease out and discuss some of the core themes of the Act, and in doing so, note the various consistencies that exist between these themes and those of South Africa's previous insider trading laws. A similarly important aim will be to determine whether the Act represents a different emphasis in regard to what has previously constituted the 'wrong' of insider trading. In addition, the relevant flaws and inadequacies of the Act that appear to have resulted from the legislature's attempt to 'toughen' up on the previous provisions as well as certain evidential problems will be discussed. It will be shown that, despite the fact that there has been a general trend to broaden the offences as well as certain key definitions, notably that of an 'insider', so that the link between the Act and the previous enactments is not as obvious as it use to be, it is submitted that this link has not completely broken down.

Abstract:
Disney is known for their family animation movies with a non-western or indigenous cultural background. Nevertheless, Disney is basically very influential for the perception of cultures by a global audience. Many studies have proven that Disney’s depiction of a certain represented culture has not always been that clean. Of course two side notes are that Disney does make movies from an American dominant perspective and second, there is no such thing as a ‘real’ or ‘correct’ culture.   Now, with the movie Moana freshly released in 2016, Disney took a step in the indigenous Polynesian culture. This research uses a thorough Critical Discourse Analysis to analyse how Disney portrays Polynesia and the Polynesian culture inside four selected samples of the movie Moana. This analysis is combined with the theories and concepts of Americanisation, Disneyfication and cultural appropriation to find out mixtures of the portrayed Polynesian culture with American and Disney values.   Interesting findings were that Disney indeed portrays a hotchpotch of many cultures that can be found in Polynesia. Disney took care of highlighting the culture in the general storyline, in the characters and in the small details. Disney uses details of Polynesian mythology and the history around the ancient voyagers and wayfinding techniques for the storyline. What Disney emphasises is the importance of family, their history and their culture. Disney always portrays the culture with a certain emission of power and pride.   However, the American dominancy is still noticeable. For example, the depiction of the coconut and the plumeria flower are signs of Americanised Polynesia. The American and Disney values are all visible during the whole movie and can be found in quotes, gestures and behaviour of characters as Moana, the ocean and demigod Maui. Especially Maui is being portrayed as the ‘American dominant hero’ even though Maui is considered to be a honoured and popular Polynesian demigod.

Abstract:
IoT has become tremendously popular. It provides information access, processing and connectivity for a huge number of devices or sensors. IoT systems, however, often do not process the information locally, rather send the information to remote locations in the Cloud. As a result, it adds huge amount of data traffic to the network and additional delay to data processing. The later feature might have significant impact on applications that require fast response times, such as sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) applications including Augmented reality, face recognition, and object detection. Consequently, edge computing paradigm that enables computation of data near the source has gained a significant importance in achieving a fast response time in the recent years. IoT devices can be employed to provide computational resources at the edge of the network near the sensors and actuators. The aim of this thesis work is to design and implement a kind of edge computing concept that brings AI models to a small embedded IoT device by the use of virtualization concepts. The use of virtualization technology enables the easy packing and shipping of applications to different hardware platforms. Additionally, this enable the mobility of AI models between edge devices and the Cloud. We will implement an AI model inside a Docker container, which will be deployed on a FireflyRK3399 single-board computer (SBC). Furthermore, we will conduct CPU and memory performance evaluations of Docker on Firefly-RK3399. The methodology adopted to reach to our goal is experimental research. First, different literatures have been studied to demonstrate by implementation the feasibility of our concept. Then we setup an experiment that covers measurement of performance metrics by applying synthetic load in multiple scenarios. Results are validated by repeating the experiment and statistical analysis. Results of this study shows that, an AI model can successfully be deployed and executed inside a Docker container on Arm-Cortex-based single-board computer. A Docker image of OpenFace face recognition model is built for ARM architecture of the Firefly SBC. On the other hand, the performance evaluation reveals that the performance overhead of Docker in terms of CPU and Memory is negligible. The research work comprises the mechanisms how AI application can be containerized in ARM architecture. We conclude that the methods can be applied to containerize software application in ARM based IoT devices. Furthermore, the insignificant overhead brought by Docker facilitates for deployment of applications inside a container with less performance overhead. The functionality of IoT device i.e. Firefly-RK3399 is exploited in this thesis. It is shown that the device is capable and powerful and gives an insight for further studies.

Abstract:

In this age of ubiquitous advertisement, people are getting more and more burdened withadvertising clutter. Digital Signage (DS) has evolved to be a new medium that can cut throughthis clutter and reach a large number of consumers. Though Digital Signage was introduced asan in-store advertising medium, soon it started to replace traditional static billboards with thebenefit of technological advancement.

While advertising effectiveness is a much discussed subject, effectiveness of an advertisingmedia is still a less explored area. Our research explored the effectiveness of Digital Signageas an advertising media in terms of its placement inside of a store and outside of a store. Atthe beginning we developed a model to measure the effectiveness of Digital Signage on thebasis of an existing model, termed as Advertising Response Model (ARM). Based onprofound study and analysis of previous literature on advertising and media effectiveness, consumer psychology, outdoor advertising and intermediate measurement variables weconstructed the modified version of ARM that deemed to be the best fit with our purpose. Wefurther developed four hypotheses on the basis of the four major variables of our model.

The result of our study indicated that placement of Digital Signage inside and outside of thestore environment impacts the variables of Attention, Recall and Media Liking of theaudience differently. However, no significant difference in consumers’ Buying Interest issupported. Placing Digital Signage inside of the store as well outside of the store both hasdifferent degrees of impact on consumers in terms of Attention, Recall and Media Liking. Thecorrelations among the variables were also explored and thus we presented some strategicinsights about the placement of Digital Signage and practical implications for managers in thescope of our study.

Our research area has received comparatively less academic attention than other advertisingmedia. However, considering the growing importance of Digital Signage as a groundbreakingadvertising medium and scope of future research work, we believe Digital Signage will be asubject of interest for the academics, the advertisers as well as for the companies.

Whetter, Lindsay. "Faith inside : an ethnographic exploration of Kainos Community, HMP The Verne." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/22974.

Full text
Abstract:
In April 1997 Kainos Community in HMP The Verne, Dorset, England became the first faith-based prison unit to be established in the Western world. The foundations and ethos of Kainos are based on Christian concepts of ‘loving your neighbour’ and forgiveness. The community operates as a hybrid therapeutic community (TC) and cognitive behavioural programme (CBP). It is open to and inclusive of prisoners of all faiths and none. The aim of this study is to explore the Kainos community ethnographically, guided by the principles of grounded theory and thematic analysis, in order to investigate whether or not Kainos ameliorates some of the de-humanising aspects of prison, and if so, how it rehumanises the prison space. Theoretically, this study highlights the dehumanisation of imprisonment, and illuminates the role that a holistic, Christian-based approach can play in terms of making the prison environment ‘more human’. My findings reveal that on Kainos there are physical, liminal and spiritual spatial mechanisms, in which a family of sub-themes interact to enable flourishing to occur. Kainos has created a physical space in which spaces of architecture and design; sensory experience; movement; and home interact to enable flourishing, whereby prisoners feel ‘more homely’, ‘free’, safe, and calm. Kainos has created a liminal space in which spaces of atmosphere; identity; home; and creativity interact to enable flourishing, empowering prisoners in their self-expression; as a cathartic tool; and as a means of regaining or creating a new identity. Kainos has created a spiritual space in which spaces of Christian activism, love, and forgiveness enable self-worth, healing, transformation, and meaningful change. The implication is that Kainos has created spaces of flourishing, safety and peace within an otherwise dehumanising carceral space, and this plays an important role in the process of transformational change imperative in the desistance process. If society must have prisons, this study concludes that Kainos provides a model for how they should be.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates a new variant of the relationship between society and the states: Government-Owned (or Organized) Non-Governmental Organizations (GONGOs). Past research has typically understood civil society as a means to explain the orientation of groups of citizens towards collective outcomes. For decades, NGOs have been a key component of this relationship between political actors but the systematic study of GONGOs has been widely neglected by research. I used an original dataset collected from an NGO directory developed by the China Development Brief (CDB) that provides information on the functional areas of NGOs, their sources of funding and various organizational facts. These data were used to code a series of concepts that will serve as the basis for an initial systematic study into GONGOs and their relationship with the Chinese government. My theoretical expectations are that the primary predictors of an NGO’s autonomy relate to their functional areas of operation, their age and other geographical factors. I find preliminary support for the effect of an NGO’s age on its autonomy from the state, as well as initial support for the dynamic nature of the relationship between NGOs and the state. I close with a discussion of these findings as well as their implications for future research.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to uncover and understand the reality of living with chronic, intractable nonmalignant back pain, as it is understood by sufferers themselves. A narrative autoethnographic research design was chosen, enabling me to interact with participants during the interview process, as well as have the opportunity to further explore my own experiences, as a long time sufferer of chronic, intractable nonmalignant back pain. Thematic analysis of participant interviews, and a deep, introspective scrutiny of my own journey, resulted in four stories being written. These stories illustrate the startlingly similar experiences we share. Although each story is written around one central character, they are in fact composite characters, representing the participants’ experiences as well as my own. The stories are: ‘The merry-go-round: Searching for a cure’, describing the endless visits to various specialists, in search of the elusive ‘cure’. ‘Mourning the loss’, illustrating the grief-like process we must go through when it becomes apparent that a cure is not possible and pain will be with us for the rest of our lives. ‘Walk a mile in my shoes’, giving a snapshot of issues facing us in our daily lives, and ‘Here we go again’, a description of a ‘typical’ pain management hospital stay. A fifth story, ‘We’re not in Kansas anymore’, was added following a bizarre emergency admission I was forced to endure during the course of my research. It is therefore a story where I am the central character. These stories illustrate the impact chronic back pain has on a sufferer’s life, ranging from loss of mobility to an altered body image. They also illustrate the struggle to maintain normality, including masking the pain and facing labelling and stigma. These stories identify and demonstrate the often hidden aspects of chronic intractable back pain, and have the power to inform practicing nurses, students, teachers and the community of the ‘lived experience’.

Abstract:
Violence has been declared a public health problem by the World Health Organisation (1996). Violence prevention strategies are actively used in efforts to rehabilitate offenders during their incarceration, and are intended to prepare them for reintegration into society and to prevent recidivism. Given the lack of research undertaken on violence prevention strategies in the gang-ridden context of Cape Town, South Africa, this dissertation looks at a prison intervention programme, Help I am Free, that uses performance arts as a case study to investigate the potential impacts of such intervention strategies. The paper does so by outlining the experiences of five male gang members before, during, and after their time in prison. Using a cross-sectional qualitative research design, the dissertation explores participants’ life histories and seeks to shed light on the ways in (and degrees to) which such programmes may influence the men’s attitudes towards themselves and others, and the likelihood of their successful reintegration into society. The theoretical frameworks used draw on applied theatre theories, social-cognitive theories, and theories of masculinities. The paper argues that programmes such as Help I am Free may impact participants’ perceptions of self and others strongly, and may also lead to an increased sense of self-worth and motivation to change lifestyle. However, it also indicates the limitations of the programme to achieve sustained success, given the structural barriers which afflict South Africa. The paper outlines a number of challenges that the men face while on parole, and concludes that while prison intervention programmes, and art programmes specifically, may trigger a sense of healing and encourage more positive notions of self, there are more comprehensive strategies in post-release urgently needed in order to prevent recidivism and to achieve authentic social re-integration.

Full text
Abstract:
Living in the United States creates unique challenges in biliteracy and bilingualism for the Arab family. While extant literature provides insight into the literacy interactions and experiences of families from many other cultures now living in the U.S. , there is next to nothing regarding the Arab family literacy experience. Thus, knowledge about the literacy activities Arab families engage in as they gain access to and knowledge of a new culture and language is important. The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the literacy practices of the Arab families raising bilingual and biliterate children in the U.S. This study , using methodology based on ethnographic approaches, investigated the literacy events, behaviors and interactions which occurred within one Arab family over a 16-week period. A second group of participants were 5 other Arab families living in the U.S. Data sources included video and audio recordings, field notes, observations, journals, informal interviews, and artifacts of children's literacy. The researcher and the participants engaged as co-participants in the research. Findings showed that driving factors behind home literacy practices were religious beliefs and the imminence of return to the home country. Arab mothers were found to yield a heavy influence on the pursuit of literacy, as well as the consistency of literacy learning events in the home. Findings should contribute to helping parents of children with different cultural backgrounds and languages provide the most effective types of support in the home instruction to develop fluency in both the new and the primary language. Information gathered would also help teachers bring together these children with their peers and the subject matter to create a positive synergy wherein all learners can be successful.

Morris, Marc Everette. "Did The Private Securities Reform Act Work As Congress Intended?" OpenSIUC, 2009. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/19.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1995 Congress passed the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act to address several perceived abuses in securities fraud class actions. In the aftermath of Enron, WorldCom, and other high profile securities litigation, critics suggest that the law made it easier for firms to escape securities fraud liability and thus created a climate conducive to fraud. Proponents maintain that the PSLRA has deterred the filing of nonmeritorious cases. This article explores whether the PSLRA achieved Congress's twin goals of "curb[ing] frivolous, lawyer-driven litigation, while preserving investors' ability to recover meritorious claims." The empirical evidence suggests that, in many respects, the PSLRA did achieve several of Congress' goals. There has been a reduction in the number of securities class actions filed. The PSLRA has improved overall case quality, particularly in the circuit with most stringent interpretation of the heightened pleading standard. In general, Congress seems to have achieved its goal of reducing the race to the court by increasing the filing delay in securities class actions. However, a stricter interpretation of the pleading standard does not affect this. The PSLRA does little to reduce the incidence of litigation for high technology issuers, but the evidence suggests that the litigation risk has substantially decreased for these issuers. Overall, the monitoring of attorney's effort increased, but institutional investors are no better at monitoring than other lead plaintiffs. The findings also suggest that lead plaintiffs forcing plaintiff's attorneys to compete for designation as lead counsel has resulted in lower attorney's fees. The observed effect is greater when the lead plaintiff is an institutional investor.

Abstract:
This study approaches the artistic field of media art, taking into account the type of connection that provides the body with the technological tools used. Closely connected with this fact should be noted that this body is going into the artist's creative process and the type of action that they have with the art materials. The fact that this research include a personal and subjective side, led to seek the kind of body that wanted to study, and their effects during manipulation of art materials. This research about the body was based on a study of the subject matter expert author, the philosopher José Gil. Associated with this research is the practical part - Flow, which falls in the form of an audiovisual installation in a closed circuit video and projection. The work Flow, gained consistency as I crossed the literature and theoretical research carried out, and treated some of the artists that had something in common, with similarities in the way we view the participation of the viewer's body, or by tests during creative process. In a more limited way, I conducted an analysis of the work Osmose of Charlotte Davies, as well as her artistic practice, which eventually resulted in a fundamental point of the central axis of the dissertation, at a point of being integrated in the title of the dissertation. The study about the artist's creative process is based on the perspective of Gilles Deleuze, especially the relationships between artist, viewer and work, as well as the perceptions that cut across these three entities.

Abstract:
Packaging and package design is commonly thought of as a tool to attract the consumer to material goods. Packages, however, have other attributes. In Japan, packaging design is very charming because of the delicate selection of materials, images, and interaction. Different kinds of material provide different emotions and appeal to our sense of touch, which can be interpreted in many ways. Packaging lets us directly interact with an object and this experience becomes memorable and intimate. The combination of image and interaction creates another dimension of story telling. My creative project, Conceptual Packaging, is an experiment in using materials and forms to package immaterial concepts and messages such as memories.
