Despite its unchallenged position as America's preeminent city, the scholarly literature devoted to New York City's history is relatively sparse. The one book that prominently stands out with general readers and historians is Robert Caro's biography of Robert Moses, The Power Broker. Vincent Cannato's recently published The Ungovernable City: John Lindsay and His Struggle to Save New York deserves to be placed alongside The Power Broker as one of the few great books written about New York City. It is also a work that provides brilliant insight into American society during the 1960s. In this se

Abstract Anna Frajlich was exiled from her homeland in 1969 and arrived in the United States a year later. This article traces through her poetry and prose the arc of Frajlich's residence in New York, from wary foreigner, residing in windswept Brooklyn, up to her present status as retired Columbia University faculty member who has made her home on Manhattan's Upper East Side. In other words, from her earliest poem about Brooklyn in 1973 to poems in which she describes events from her apartment on the Upper East Side, published in early 2021. Urban biographies are growing in numbers upon the shelves. A clutch of mainly English ones were reviewed recently in these pages by David Reeder with a sense of cautious enthusiasm and warnings about the dangers of fragmentation in these often topic-oriented multi-authored volumes. Recent examples include Donald Miller's 1996 study of Chicago, an example of unashamedly scholarly boosterism. The massive Burrows and Wallace study of New York followed in 1999 and presented a detailed episodic account of the city. In 1,383 pages they have still only got to 1898. Charles Frederick Ulrich (1858-1908) is best-known today for his paintings of figures at work, exhibited in New York between 1882 and 1884. By portraying both males and females at their work tables, Ulrich was showing middle-class individuals occupied with tasks informed by both knowledge and culture. This thesis describes these works as a way of exploring the artist's New York career, especially in regards to such current issues as immigration, labor, and social awareness. Charles F. Abstract:
In the field of liturgical theology, there is a common understanding that the prescriptive theological claims of theologians do not often match the descriptive, lived reality of worshippers. Put differently, there is a gap between the “primary” theological activity of worship and the formal “secondary” theology of the academic liturgical theologian. Within this interstice lie the liturgical-theological articulations of “ordinary,” non-specialist worshippers. This project argues that liturgical theology has not focused upon the human subject to a sufficient standard and proposes the method of l

That is, his sheer originality – attested to by students as well as contemporaries – has been largely overlooked or misunderstood. The fact that he critiqued neoclassicism has been lost.
