Abstract We study the onset of vector instabilities in the post-inflationary epoch of the Universe as a mechanism for primordial magnetic fields amplification. We assume the presence of a charged spectator scalar field arbitrarily coupled to gravity during Inflation in its vacuum de Sitter state. Gravitational particle creation takes place at the transition from Inflation to the subsequent Reheating stage and thus the vacuum field state becomes an excited many particles one. Consequently this state can be described as a real fluid, and we build out the hydrodynamic framework using second order theories for relativistic fluids with a relaxation time prescription for the collision integral. Given the high-temperature regime and the vanishing scalar curvature of the Universe during Reheating (radiation-dominated-type era), the fluid can be regarded as a conformal one. The large quantum fluctuations induced by the rapid transition from inflationary to effectively radiation dominated expansion become statistical fluctuations whereby both a charge excess and anisotropic pressures are produced in any finite domain. The precise magnitude of the effect for each scale is determined by the size of the averaging domain and the coupling to curvature. We look at domains which are larger than the horizon at the beginning of Reheating, but much smaller than our own horizon, and show that in a finite fraction of them the anisotropy and charge excess provide suitable conditions for a Weibel instability. If moreover the duration of reheating is shorter than the relaxation time of the fluid, then this instability can compensate or even overcome the conformal dilution of a primordial magnetic field. We show that the non-trivial topology of the magnetic field encoded in its magnetic helicity is also amplified if present.

Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations show that an anisotropic electron velocity distribution is demonstrated by ultraintense laser pulses in underdense plasmas. Recently, it is reported that the anisotropy has been experimentally demonstrated in laser-produced plasmas. It is also pointed out that gigagauss magnetic fields are generated by ultraintense laser pulses. We have already published that the Weibel-type electromagnetic instabilities can be theoretically excited by electrons in a velocity distribution with anisotropic temperature. If these electromagnetic waves are excited, the target may have a possibility not only to give rise to a new type of energy loss mechanism but also to influence the implosion characteristics. In this work, we present PIC simulation of the interaction of ultraintense laser pulses with plasmas. Intense self-generated magnetic fields is produced by the mechanism of Weibel instability in underdense plasmas.

Abstract. In thin (Δ< few λi) collisionless current sheets in a space plasma like the magnetospheric tail or magnetopause current layer, magnetic fields can grow from thermal fluctuation level by the action of the non-magnetic Weibel instability (Weibel, 1959). The instability is driven by the counter-streaming electron inflow from the "ion diffusion" (ion inertial Hall) region into the inner current (electron inertial) region after thermalisation by the two-stream instability. Under magnetospheric tail conditions it takes ~50 e-folding times (~100 s) for the Weibel field to reach observable amplitudes |bW|~1 nT. In counter-streaming inflows these fields are of guide field type.

AbstractA comparative study of the electromagnetic instabilities in anisotropic unmagnetized plasmas is undertaken. The instabilities considered are the filamentation and Weibel instability, and their cumulative effect. Dispersion relations are derived and the growth rates are plotted systematically for the representative cases of non-relativistic counterstreaming plasmas with isotropic or anisotropic velocity distributions functions of Maxwellian type. The pure filamentation mode is attenuated by including an isotropic Maxwellian distribution function. Moreover, it is observed that counterstreaming plasmas can be fully stabilized by including bi-Maxellian distributions with a negative thermal anisotropy. This effect is relevant for fusion plasma experiments. Otherwise, for plasma streams with a positive anisotropy the filamentation and Weibel instabilities cumulate leading to a growth rate by orders of magnitude larger than that of a simple filamentation mode. This is noticeable for the quasistatic magnetic field generated in astrophysical sources, and which is expected to saturate at higher values and explain the non-thermal emission observed.

AbstractThe source of the cosmological magnetic field is still unknown because the widely invoked dynamo processes are only able to regenerate and amplify some initial magnetic field seeds. In the hot and highly ionized intergalactic matter such magnetic field seeds can easily be produced by the (electro-)magnetic instabilities of Weibel type. Here we discuss suplementary mechanisms that can make these Weibel created fields to evolve at large scales presently observed in galaxies and clusters and can also enhance these magnetic field seeds after the dissipation.

Les instabilités de type Weibel naissent si la distribution des vitesses du plasma présente une anisotropie. Elles entraînent la génération d’un champ magnétique dû à la formation de filaments de courant ainsi qu’une activité électrostatique importante. Ces phénomènes de base apparaissent dans de nombreuses situations, naturelles (vent solaire, jets relativistes) ou expérimentales (interaction laser-plasma) : les plasmas dans lesquels ils naissent peuvent être relativistes ou non, magnétisés ou non, collisionnels ou non, ce qui pose la question du choix du modèle à utiliser pour les décrire. La théorie cinétique est le cadre le plus complexe dans lequel nous travaillerons. De par sa complexité, il est intéressant de développer des modèles réduits. Un premier travail mené au cours de cette thèse est l’utilisation d’un modèle fluide incluant la dynamique du tenseur de pression pour modéliser la phase linéaire des instabilités de type Weibel. On discute le rôle essentiel joué par les composantes hors diagonale du tenseur dans la génération du champ magnétique, puis la capacité du modèle à reproduire quantitativement ou qualitativement les résultats cinétiques en introduisant la notion de limite hydrodynamique. La seconde partie de la thèse est ciblée sur le développement du code semi-lagrangien relativiste VLEM utilisant une méthode de décomposition de domaine : on présente les principales méthodes mathématiques utilisées dans le code, puis on aborde la problématique de la conservation de la charge à laquelle on apporte une réponse reposant sur une adaptation de la méthode d’Esirkepov. A long-lasting magnetic field is generated due to the formation of current filaments, and it is accompanied by an important electrostatic activity. These ``basic’’ phenomena have been greatly investigated because of their involvement in many physical problems, natural (solar wind, relativistic jets) or experimental (laser-plasma interaction) : they occurs in plasmas which can be collisional or not, magnetised or not, relativistic or not. One needs to choose a suitable model for their description. The kinetic theory is the most complete and somewhat complex theoretical framework which we will consider. Due to its complexity, it may be interesting to develop reduced models. The first work realised during this thesis is the utilisation of a non-relativistic fluid description, including the dynamics of the pressure tensor, in order to model the linear Weibel-type instabilities. We put in evidence the effect of the non-diagonal components of the tensor on the magnetic field generation. We discuss the ability of the model to reproduce quantitatively or qualitatively the kinetic results by introducing the hydrodynamics limit. The second part of this thesis work is dedicated to the development of the relativistic semi-lagrangian code VLEM, using a domain decomposition scheme : we present the main mathematical tools used in the code, then we deal with the problem of the charge conservation and propose a solution for VLEM, based on an adaptation of the Esirkepov method. Finally, we validate the code through simulations of Weibel-type

L'origine de champs magnétiques observés dans les plasmas de laboratoire et d'astrophysique est l'un des problèmes récurrents en physique des plasmas. À cet égard, les instabilités de type Weibel sont considérées d'une grande importance. Ces instabilités ont pour origine une anisotropie de température (instabilité de Weibel) et des moments des électrons (instabilité de filamentation de courant). L'objectif principal de cette thèse est l'étude théorique et numérique de ces instabilités dans un plasma non collisionnel en régime relativiste. Le premier aspect de ce travail est l'étude du régime non-linéaire de ces instabilités et du rôle des effets cinétiques et relativistes sur la structure des champs électromagnétiques auto-cohérents. Dans ce cadre, un problème essentiel pour les applications et la théorie, concerne l'identification et l'analyse des structures cohérentes développées spontanément dans le régime non-linéaire sur des échelles cinétiques. Un deuxième aspect du travail est le développement de techniques analytiques et numériques pour l'étude des plasmas non collisionnels. Le modèle mathématique de référence, à la base des études des plasmas chauds, est le modèle Vlasov-Maxwell, où l'équation de Vlasov (théorie des champs moyens) est couplée aux équations de Maxwell de façon auto-cohérente. Un modèle unidimensionnel, le modèle multi-faisceaux, a également été introduit durant cette thèse. Basé sur une technique de réduction en dimension, il est à la fois un modèle analytique "simple" présentant l'avantage de pouvoir résoudre une équation de Vlasov 1D pour chaque faisceau de particules, et un modèle numérique moins coûteux qu'un modèle complet<br>The origin of magnetic fields observed in laboratory and astrophysical plasmas is one ofthe most challenging problems in plasma physics. In this respect, the Weibel type instabilities are considered of key importance. These instabilities are caused by a temperature anisotropy (Weibel instability) and electron momentum (current filamentation instability). The main objective of this thesis is the theoretical and numerical study of these instabilities in a collisionless plasma in the relativistic regime. The first aspect of this work is to study the nonlinear regime of these instabilities and the role of kinetic and relativistic effects on the structure of self-consistent electromagnetic fields. In this context, a key problem for the theory and applications, is the identification and analysis of coherent structures developed spontaneously in the nonlinear regime of kinetic scales. A second aspect of the work is the development of analytical and numerical techniques for the study of collisionless plasmas. A mathematical model of reference is the Vlasov-Maxwell model, where the Vlasov equation (mean field theory) is coupled to the Maxwell equations in a self-consistent way. A one-dimensional model, the multi-stream model, is also introduced. Based on a dimensional reduction technique, it is both an analytical model "simple" having the advantage of being able to solve a 1D Vlasov equation for each particle beam, and a numerical model less expensive than a complete model

Les plasmas sont des systèmes gazeux d'ions et d'électrons qui interagissent avec les champs électromagnétiques et affichent des propriétés collectives. Parmi ceux-ci, il y a la notion de "connexion" de lignes magnétiques. Ceci exprime le fait que, dans des régimes dans lesquels les particules chargées s'enroulent suffisamment vite le long des lignes d'induction magnétique, ces dernières sont liées au mouvement du plasma massif et acquièrent une identité topologique qui leur interdit de se rompre, se croiser et se reconnecter. Cette identité topologique peut cependant être localement violée grâce à un certain nombre d'effets cinétiques, comme les collisions entre les particules, lorsque les courants dans le plasma sont suffisamment intenses : on parle de “reconnexion magnétique”. La reconnexion magnétique est un ingrédient important de l'auto-organisation du plasma et a une importance pour les plasmas spatiaux et de laboratoire, car elle est à la base de phénomènes naturels comme les éruptions solaires et les aurores polaires, ou de processus disruptifs dans les expériences de fusion thermonucléaire. Un problème de longue date dans l'étude des plasmas de laboratoire et astrophysiques est de comprendre les mécanismes d'accélération des électrons et des ions, lorsqu’un champ magnétique se reconnecte et libère de l'énergie. Dans ce travail, nous avons étudié les effets cinétiques sur les instabilités de reconnexion se développant spontanément dans les nappes de courant statique (modes de déchirement) et en combinaison avec une classe d'instabilités cinétiques (instabilités de Weibel) qui sont pertinentes à la fois pour les jets de plasma astrophysiques et pour les expériences d'interaction laser-plasma. Nous avons effectué cette étude en utilisant des modèles fluides réduits et cinétiques, et nous avons étudié la concurrence entre les modes de type déchirement et les instabilités de type Weibel au moyen de simulations cinétiques complètes avec codes semi-lagrangiennes Vlasov-Maxwell et de type “Particle-In-Cell“<br>Plasmas are gaseous systems of ions and electrons which interact via electromagnetic fields and display collective properties. Among these, is the notion of the magnetic line "connection". This expresses the fact that, in regimes in which charged particles spiral sufficiently fast along lines of magnetic induction, the latter is linked to the bulk plasma motion and acquire a topological identity which forbids them to break, intersect and reconnect. This topological identity, however, can be locally violated thanks to a number of kinetic effects, such as particle collisions, when the currents in the plasma are sufficiently intense: one speaks of "magnetic reconnection". Magnetic reconnection is an important ingredient of the plasma self-organization and has significance for both space and laboratory plasmas since it is at the basis of natural phenomena like solar flares and polar lights, or of disruptive processes in thermonuclear fusion experiments. A long-standing problem in the study of laboratory and astrophysical plasmas is to understand the mechanisms of acceleration of electrons and ions, as a magnetic field reconnect and release energy. In this work, we studied kinetic effects on reconnection instabilities developing spontaneously in static current sheets (tearing modes) and in combination with a class of kinetic instabilities (Weibel instabilities) that are relevant both to astrophysical plasma jets and to laser-plasma interaction experiments. We performed this study using reduced-fluid and kinetic models and we investigated the competition between tearing-type modes and Weibel-type instabilities by means of both semi-lagrangian full kinetic Vlasov-Maxwell simulations and particles in cell simulations

Nous avons modélisé numériquement la stabilité d'un système de deux couches d'un même fluide pur supercritique soumis à une différence de température initiale à l'interface. La grande compressibilité et la faible diffusivité thermique des fluides critiques entraînent une instabilité gravitationnelle de type Rayleigh-Taylor de la couche de diffusion. Cette instabilité est similaire à celle que l'on retrouve dans le cas de deux fluides miscibles à condition de remplacer le coefficient de diffusion moléculaire par celui de la diffusion thermique. Nos résultats numériques semblent être consistants, d'un point de vue de la relation de dispersion dans le cas linéaire, avec ceux de Duff et al. [Duf62] considérés dans le cas de deux fluides miscibles. Nous avons aussi montré que, lorsque l'épaisseur de la couche inférieure devient plus petite que l'épaisseur de la couche de diffusion thermique basée sur le taux de croissance maximal alors le système devenait stable. Un diagramme de stabilité a été établi en fonction de trois paramètres: l'épaisseur de la couche inférieure, la différence de densité entre les deux couches et la distance au point critique. Lorsque l'on s'approche du point critique, la stratification devient de plus importante (à cause de la forte compressibilité) et tend à stabiliser la configuration. Par ailleurs, le filtrage acoustique initialement utilisé afin de réduire les coûts de calcul, ne s'est pas avéré nécessaire puisque la méthode des volumes finis est naturellement filtrante (formulation intégrale ou variationnelle des équations).

Les chocs non-collisionnels jouent un rôle majeur dans de nombreux événements astrophysiques à haute densité d'énergie (sursauts gamma, restes de supernovæ, vents de pulsar...), et seraient responsables de la génération de particules supra-thermiques et de radiations. Les simulations ont démontré qu'en l’absence de champs magnétiques externes, des instabilités électromagnétiques peuvent prendre place lors de la collision de plasmas à haute vitesse. Les instabilités du type Weibel sont en effet capables de faire croître, dans ces milieux, une turbulence électromagnétique potentiellement en mesure de défléchir et d'accélérer des particules par des processus du type Fermi. En plus d'une compréhension théorique toujours croissante, la génération expérimentale de tels chocs est maintenant étudiée à l'aide de lasers de puissance. Les fluctuations thermiques électromagnétiques constituent les germes des instabilités se développant dans un plasma. Nous nous sommes attelés à leur description dans le cas d’un plasma relativiste régi par une fonction de distribution de type Maxwell-Jüttner. Des formules exactes de la densité spectrale ont pu être obtenues pour différentes orientations du vecteur propre. Ces résultats ont pu être confrontés aux prédictions d’un code de simulation particle-in-cell (PIC). Un très bon accord a été démontré.Ces résultats ont été exploités lors d'une collaboration internationale dont le but était d'estimer le temps de saturation de l'instabilité cinétique de Weibel, générant des fluctuations magnétiques. Les estimations obtenues ont pu être validées par des simulations PIC sur trois ordres de grandeur d'énergie de dérive.Nous avons ensuite mené une étude théorique et numérique des collisions de plasma d'électrons-ions en régime non-collisionnel ayant lieu lors d'événements astrophysiques tels que les restes de supernovæ. Par-delà un intérêt académique pour la compréhension des processus de transfert/transport d’énergie au sein des plasmas, la récente génération de tels plasmas en laboratoire ouvre des perspectives inédites en astrophysique des hautes énergies. La zone de recouvrement de ces faisceaux de particules est sujette à des instabilités cinétiques du type Weibel, générant des champs magnétiques intenses.Nous avons modélisé l'évolution non-linéaire d'un système soumis à l'instabilité de Weibel, et obtenu des formules analytiques de l'évolution des paramètres plasmas (températures et vitesse de dérive) et des champs magnétiques. Le modèle prédit ainsi l’évolution du système jusqu’à un stade proche de l’isotropisation complète des populations de particules et donc jusqu'à la formation d’un choc non-collisionnel. Ce modèle, en accord avec des simulations du type « particle-in-cell », pu aussi être comparé à des résultats expérimentaux récents. L'étude de la propagation des chocs non-collisionnels, m'a permis de généraliser le précédent modèle au cas de la turbulence magnétique ayant lieu en amont du front de choc.Nous nous sommes consacrés enfin aux chocs non-collisionnels créés dans un plasma dense (opaque) irradié par un laser intense. L’interaction laser-plasma qui en résulte donne lieu à un important courant d'électrons relativistes qui sont à l’origine d’instabilités cinétiques (de filamentation notamment) susceptibles d'évoluer en choc non-collisionnel. Une observation originale, contrastant avec les premières publications sur le sujet est que pour les paramètres considérés (un laser d’éclairement ~1021 Wcm-2, interagissant avec une cible solide), le choc résulte de la turbulence magnétique produite par l’instabilité électronique, plutôt que par l’instabilité ionique (dont la croissance est plus tardive). En d’autres termes, compte tenu de l’énergie très élevée des électrons accélérés par le laser, la turbulence qu'ils génèrent s’avère assez forte pour rapidement défléchir les ions<br>Collisionless shocks play a major role in powerful astrophysical objects (e.g., gamma-ray bursts, supernova remnants, pulsar winds, etc.), where they are thought to be responsible for non-thermal particle acceleration and radiation. Numerical simulations have shown that, in the absence of an external magnetic field, these self-organizing structures originate from electromagnetic instabilities triggered by high-velocity colliding flows. These Weibel-like instabilities are indeed capable of producing the magnetic turbulence required for both efficient scattering and Fermi-type acceleration. Along with rapid advances in their theoretical understanding, intense effort is now underway to generate collisionless shocks in the laboratory using energetic lasers. In a first part we study the (w,k)-resolved electromagnetic thermal spectrum sustained by a drifting relativistic plasma. In particular, we obtain analytical formulae for the fluctuation spectra, the latter serving as seeds for growing magnetic modes in counterstreaming plasmas. Distinguishing between subluminal and supraluminal thermal fluctuations, we derived analytical formulae of their respective spectral contributions. Comparisons with particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations are made, showing close agreement in the subluminal regime along with some discrepancy in the supraluminal regime. Our formulae are then used to estimate the saturation time of the Weibel instability of relativistic pair plasmas. Our predictions are shown to match 2-D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations over a three-decade range in flow energyWe then develop a predictive kinetic model of the nonlinear phase of the Weibel instability induced by two counter-streaming, symmetric and non-relativistic ion beams. This self consistent, fully analytical model allows us to follow the evolution of the beams' properties up to a stage close to complete isotropization and thus to shock formation. Its predictions are supported by 2D and 3D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of the ion Weibel instability in uniform geometries, as well as shock-relevant non-uniform configurations. Moreover, they are found in correct agreement with a recent laser-driven plasma collision experiment. Along with this comparison, we pinpoint the important role of electron screening on the ion-Weibel dynamics, which may affect the results of simulations with artificially high electron mass. We subsequently address the shock propagation resulting from the magnetic Weibel turbulence generated in the upstream region. Generalizing the previous symmetric-beam model to the upstream region of the shock, the role of the magnetic turbulence in the shock-front has been analytically and self-consistently characterized. Comparison with simulations validates the model. The interaction of high-energy, ultra-high intensity lasers with dense plasmas is known to produce copious amounts of suprathermal particles. Their acceleration and subsequent transport trigger a variety of Weibel-like electromagnetic instabilities, acting as additional sources of slowing down and scattering. Their understanding is important for the many applications based upon the energy deposition and/or field generation of laser-driven particles. We investigate the ability of relativistic-intensity laser pulses to induce Weibel instability-mediated shocks in overdense plasma targets, as first proposed by Fiuza in 2012. By means of both linear theory and 2D PIC simulations, we demonstrated that in contrast to the standard astrophysical scenario previously addressed, the early-time magnetic fluctuations (Weibel instability) generated by the suprathermal electrons (and not ions) are strong enough to isotropize the target ions and, therefore, induce a collisionless electromagnetic shock

Dans cette thèse de doctorat nous présentons une étude théorique de deux types d'instabilitésferroélectriques: celles apparaissant dans des géométries confinés et celles induites par le magnétismedans dans composés massifs de structure perovskite. Dans une première partie nous abordons leproblème des instabilités ferroélectriques apparaissant dans des nanotubes et des nanocoquillesoù nous développons un modèle théorique phénoménologique approprié à ces structures. Nousétudions comment l'émergence de la polarisation est affectée par (i) l'épaisseur des nanostructures,(ii) par la réponse diélectrique des matériaux environant la couche ferroélectrique et (iii) les conditionsaux interfaces. Nous observons un effet de taille finie topologique qui peut promouvoirune compétition inhabituelle entre deux types de distribution de la polarization, irrotationel eten vortex, dans la limite des très petites épaisseurs. Dans une deuxième partie nous utilisons descalculs ab-initio à base de la théorie de la fonctionnelle de la densité pour étudier les instabilitésferroélectriques des perovskites manganites à base de terres rares (RMnO3). A partir de ces calculsnous prédisons qu'il est possible d'induire une transition de phase sous pression dans EuMnO3 lefaisant transiter d'un ordre antiferromagnétique de type A isolant vers un ordre ferromagnétiquemétallique sous pression. Ce type de transition n'avait jamais été reporté précédemment dans lesmatériaux RMnO3. Nous étendons ensuite cette analyse à l'étude des effets de strain épitaxial dansles films minces de TbMnO3 et EuMnO3. Nos résultats montrent que le diagramme de phase souscontrainte d'épitaxie est bien plus riche que celui sous pression hydrostatique. Nous trouvons queles types antiferromagnétiques E-AFM et E*-AFM sont stabilisés dans le cas de TbMnO3, où letype E*-AFM est une phase métallique polaire. Dans le cas de EuMnO3, nous trouvons une phaseantiferromagnétique de type E qui n'a pas été observée sous pression hydrostatique<br>In this thesis, we present a theoretical study of two types of ferroic instabilities: the ferroelectric instability in novel confined geometries and magnetic instabilities controlled by the distortion of the underlying crystal lattice. On the one hand, we consider in detail the ferroelectric instability, specifically, in the nanotubes and the spherical nanoshells and develop a phenomenological theory for describing such an instability. We determine how the emergence of polarization is affected bythe thickness of the nanoparticle, the dielectric properties of the surrounding media and the interfacial boundary conditions. We finnd an intriguing topological finite-size effect that can promote an unexpected competition between two different types of distribution of polarization - irrotational and vortex-like - in the ultra-thin limit. One the other hand, we employ a different formalism to investigate the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the rare-earth manganites. Specifically,we conduct a theoretical investigation from first-principles calculations. First, we predict a pressure-induced A-AFM insulator to FM metal transition on EuMnO3 under hydrostatic pressure, that is unprecedented in the multiferroic rare-earth manganites RMnO3. This investigation is extended to the study to the epitaxial strain effects on both EuMnO3 and TbMnO3 thin films. We show that epitaxial strain generates a much richer phase diagram compared to hydrostatic pressure. We predict novel magnetically-induced insulator { metal and polar { non-polar transitions. More specifically, we find that both the multiferroic E-AFM order and the polar metallic E*-AFM state are stabilized in TbMnO3 by means of epitaxial strain. In the contrast, we find a novel epitaxial-strain-induced multiferroic E-AFM state in EuMnO3 that cannot be obtained by means of just hydrostatic pressure

Etude de la transition paraélectrique-ferroélectrique des composés KH₂PO₄ au moyen d'un interféromètre à balayage qui permet l'observation du spectre vibrationnel complet. Les fréquences et amortissements des modes transverses et longitudinaux optiques sont obtenus en simulant les spectres expérimentaux au moyen de la forme factorisée de la fonction diélectrique. Par comparaison des résultats, on identifie les modes de vibration. On montre que la transition de phase est liée à la déstabilisation de l'un des modes internes du tétraèdre. La transition est displacive, mais induite par un phénomène de désordre des protons.

Les propulseurs plasmiques de type Hall possèdent des caractéristiques fonctionnelles qui répondent particulièrement bien aux besoins en propulsion des nouvelles générations de satellites. Le fonctionnement de ces propulseurs est basé sur la création et l'accélération d'un plasma de xénon dans une décharge en champs croisés E x B. Dans le cadre d'un groupement de recherche constitué du CNRS, du CNES, de la SNECMA et de l'ONERA, un effort particulier est porté pour améliorer la compréhension des mécanismes physiques qui gère le fonctionnement de ces propulseurs. L'étude expérimentale de la réponse du moteur à des extinctions de courant obtenues avec un interrupteur ultra-rapide a pris une place particulière dans cette thèse. Cette approche a permis d'apporter un nouvel éclairage sur les processus collisionnels de création du plasma et a rendu possible une caractérisation fine du comportement dynamique de la décharge. Le transport des électrons dans la décharge à travers le champ magnétique reste encore un problème ouvert. Des mesures à l'aide d'antennes large-bande ont permis d'observer la corrélation entre le développement d'instabilités haute fréquence (6 MHz) et une augmentation macroscopique du courant. Ces mesures mettent en évidence l'existence d'un transport turbulent des électrons dans la décharge.

Les satellites artificiels baignent dans un environnement radiatif hostile qui conditionne en partie leur fiabilité et leur durée de vie en opération : les ceintures de Van Allen. Afin de les protéger, il est nécessaire de caractériser la dynamique des électrons énergétiques piégés dans les ceintures radiatives. Elle est déterminée essentiellement par les interactions entre les électrons énergétiques et les ondes électromagnétiques existantes. <br /><br />Le travail de cette thèse a consisté à concevoir un schéma numérique original pour la résolution du système d'équations modélisant ces interactions : les équations de Vlasov-Maxwell relativistes. Notre choix s'est orienté vers des méthodes d'intégration directe. Nous proposons trois nouvelles méthodes spectrales pour discrétiser en impulsion les équations : une méthode de Galerkin et deux méthodes de type collocation. Ces approches sont basées sur des fonctions de Hermite qui ont la particularité de dépendre d'un facteur d'échelle permettant d'obtenir une bonne résolution en vitesse. <br /><br />Nous présentons dans ce manuscript les calculs conduisant à la discrétisation et à la résolution du problème de Vlasov-Poisson monodimensionnel ainsi que les résultats numériques obtenus. Puis nous étudions les extensions possibles des méthodes au problème complet relativiste. Afin de réduire les temps de calcul, une parallélisation et une optimisation des algorithmes ont été mises en \oe uvre. Enfin, les calculs de validation du code 1Dx-3Dv, à partir d'instabilités de types Weibel et whistlers, à une ou deux espèces d'électrons, sont détaillés.

Cette thèse s’intéresse à la dynamique des fronts d’ablation accélérés se développant dans les expériences de Fusion par Confinement Inertiel. La FCI est un procédé destiné à obtenir l’implosion d’une capsule de deutérium ou de tritium en la comprimant par irradiation de sa couche extérieure, l’ablateur. Le front d’ablation parcourant cette coquille superficielle est déformé par des perturbations hydrodynamiques pouvant compromettre l’allumage d’une réaction de fusion. Ces travaux proposent donc une étude numérique de l’apparition d’instabilités de Rayleigh-Taylor dans le processus d’ablation, étudié en deux dimensions d’espace. La résolution numérique s’appuie sur une modélisation asymptotique du phénomène dans la limite d’un grand rapport de température entre le plasma chaud vaporisé par le laser et l’ablateur encore froid. Cette modélisation est effectuée en deux étapes. Tout d’abord, la partie thermo-diffusive est approchée par un système de type Hele-Shaw. Nous considérons ensuite la partie hydrodynamique comme une perturbation du système précédent. Asymptotiquement, il s’agit de résoudre l’advection d’une nappe de vorticité localisée sur le front. La discrétisation du système limite passe par une formulation eulérienne couplée avec un suivi de front par des marqueurs. La partie thermique est résolue par la méthode de la Frontière Elargie récemment développée et la partie hydrodynamique par une méthode de Volumes Finis<br>This thesis deals with the dynamics of accelerated ablative front spreading in Inertial Confinement Fusion experiments. ICF is designed for the implosion of a mdeuterium or tritium spherical target. The outer shell, the ablator, is irradiated providing a high level pressure inside the target. During this first stage, the ablation front propagating inward is perturbed by hydrodynamics instabilities, which can prevent the fusion reaction in the decelerated stage. We propose here a study on Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities during ablation process, in the two dimensional case. In order to obtain a numerical solution, we perform an asymptotic analysis in the limit of a high temperature ratio, between the remaining cold ablator and the hot ablated plasma. This study is divided in two steps. First, the thermo-diffusive part of the set of equations is approximated by a Hele-Shaw model, which is then perturbed by the hydrodynamics part. Using a vortex method, we have to solve the advection of a vortical sheet moving with the ablation front. We compute the numerical solution on an eulerian mesh coupled with a front tracking method. The thermal part is calculated by implementing the Fat Boundary Method, recently developped. The hydrodynamic part is obtained from a Finit Volume scheme

The effect of casting defects on the tensile properties of high-pressure die-cast AlSi9Cu3(Fe) alloys is reported. A series of U-shaped structural components has been die-cast using a combination of injection parameters and pouring temperatures in order to produce different types and amount of casting defects throughout the casting. The results reveal how the die-castings contain defects, primarily pores and oxides, and their presence and distribution are highly sensitive to the process conditions. The tensile properties are affected by the amount and distribution of defects and can be determined by the defect area fraction. The influence of casting defects on the tensile properties are investigated through a theoretical verification based both on constitutive and stochastic models. The analytical approach, based on the Ghosh constitutive model of tension instability, correctly indicates the trends of the experimental results, while the Weibull statistics evidences how the scale parameter and the Weibull modulus are strongly affected by the casting conditions.

Liver cells were derived from cadaveric organ donors. Pieces of human liver 5 to 50 grams were minced, washed, and incubated in collagenase at 37 degrees C. After washing, the cell suspension was plated into culture vessels that had been briefly pre-treated with an extract derived from human liver. A mixed population of liver cells, including endothelial cells, hepatocytes, and Kupffer cells, attached within hours. At the end of 2 to 3 weeks there developed clusters of densely packed cells of two types. The most numerous cells were initially fusiform but grew as a monolayer even when densely packed. As density increased they assumed a polygonal form; cells with this morphological appearance stained immunocytochemically for von Willebrand factor antigen. They were relatively small and resembled cells derived from human umbilical vein except that the cytoplasm was more filmy in appearance. The second prominent cell type was significantly larger and likewise replicated to form clusters. These large cells sometimes contained multiple nuclei, exhibited a relatively low nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio, and immunocytochemically stained for human fibrinogen. A more distinct nuclear membrane and prominent nucleoli were characteristics of hepatocytes that were useful light microscopically in distinguishing these cells from sinusoidal endothelial cells. Ultrastructurally, endothelial cells were characterized by small size, holes in and among the cells that probably were the in vitro analogue of fenestrae, and numerous Weibel-Palade bodies in the cytoplasm, which otherwise was relatively bland. Hepatocytes, by contrast, had an active appearing cytoplasm containing more organelles. Canaliculi and typical tight junctions formed between adjacent hepatocytes. Levels of vWF and fibrinogen increased in a time dependent manner in media overlying this mixed population of cells. Human factor VIII has not yet been detected in the media overlying these mixed cells derived from human liver, and factor VIII antigen has not yet been demonstrable immunocytochemically in either cell type.
