Abstract:
Interactive artistic installations represent avant-garde forms of Contemporary Art. They are artistic works able to change their behavior in response to the behavior of the viewers, turning them into (more or less) active participants. This paper discusses an interactive installation the authors developed during the beginning of 2012 for the St. Elmo Castle in Naples, Italy. In this installation the audience determines the evolution of the life cycle of specific plants, in terms of an opening/closing process. The paper proposes some reflections on this case study, especially about the engagement dimension promoted by the work.

Abstract:
In the installation process of large-scale external cladding, the labor intensity is high, and it is dangerous and hard to guarantee good construction quality. In view of these issues, this study designs a construction robot for external cladding installation, as a better solution. First, the advantages and disadvantages of the current building external cladding hanging process are discussed. The components, suitable for automatic installation, are selected to develop an automatic installation process for the building external cladding. According to the process steps and installation action flow, the installation robot is first adjusted. After the design of a step-by-step workflow of positioning and installation, a robot with a six-degree-of-freedom string-mixing mechanism is designed. Finally, a prototype of the proposed external cladding installation robot is developed, and the system is experimentally verified under simulation conditions and real operation. The test results show that the external cladding installation robot system has a strong theoretical basis. The series-parallel hybrid six-degree-of-freedom structure is reasonable, design wise. It helps to complete the automatic installation of the building external cladding and improve the automation level of large-scale plate installations.

Abstract:
During ecological researches and monitoring of the natural aquatic environment it is very often necessary to carry out filtration of water large volumes for extraction on filters the weighed components, and for subsequent analysis of mineral and organic suspension’s structure. The installations applied now for vacuum filtration have a number of essential restrictions. The most important deficiency of existing installations for vacuum filtration is the use of a leak-tight receiver with rigid design. At intensive filtration such receiver has to have a large volume that limits filtration installation’s possibilities for transportation and afield operation. Need of a vacuum pump’s protection against a filtrate intrusion demands constant monitoring for receiver filling at the large filtration volume. During receiver filling the filtration process needs to be interrupted for filtrate removal from the receiver, but sometimes such interruption significantly complicates the filtration process. In this paper is described the developed new mobile installation for continuous vacuum filtration based on a closed cycle water-jet pump for vacuum generation. The proposed installation for vacuum filtration of natural water’s weighed components allows carry out filtration of water large volumes in the continuous mode. The installation hasn’t a leak-tight vacuum receiver so that it has small dimensions.

Abstract:
Studies have been carried out to evaluate the efficiency of using easy-assembled cow houses in modern milk production technologies for the use of high-productive milking plants of the type ‘Parallel’ and ‘Carousel’ with 32 machines each. It has been established that new types of premises not only provide comfortable conditions for the maintenance of highly productive cows, but also reduce the labor costs for their maintenance and, most importantly, allow the use of modern high-productive milking installations of the type ‘Parallel’ and ‘Carousel’. It has been established that the technology of preparation of cows for milking and milking technology provides more complete display of the milk ejection reflex at the installation of the ‘Parallel’ type. The average intensity of cows’ milk flows at this plant is 30% higher compared to those of the installation of ‘Carousel’ type, which is confirmed by the intensity of milk flow production at the first minute of milking, which is at the level of 2.97 against 1.85 kg min.-1 per installation of ‘Carousel’ type. Milk obtained using a milking installation of the ‘Parallel’ type has higher values of the mass fraction of fat and protein that is associated with the genetic potential of animals. According to physical, chemical and technological properties, milk obtained from milking installations such as ‘Parallel’ and ‘Carousel’ is within the limits of the standards in force. Milk obtained from the use of milking equipment such as ‘Carousel’ has higher electrical conductivity at the level of 4.6 mS cm-3, which is confirmed by a higher level of mastitis disease of cows. Due to bacterial contamination, reductase test and milk clot characteristic, milk obtained using a milk installation of ‘Parallel’ type also has higher quality indicators than the installation of ‘Carousel’ type. But according to the complex of indicators, milk obtained from various technologies of milking refers to the desired cheese-making class.

Full text
Abstract:
Blind fasteners are of special interest for aircraft construction since they allow working on joints where only one side is accessible, as is the case in many common aerospace box-type structures, such as stabilizers and flaps. This paper aims to deliver an online monitoring method for the detection of incorrect installed blind fasteners. In this type of fastener, the back side of the assembly is not accessible, so monitoring the process installation is suitable as a system to assess the formed head at the back side with no access. The solution proposed consists of an on-line monitoring system that is based on sensor signals acquired during the installation. The signals are conveniently analyzed in order to provide an evaluation outcome on how the fastener was installed. This new method will help production to decrease/eliminate time and cost-intensive inspections and fasteners over installation in structures. The decrease of the number of installed fasteners will also contribute to weight savings and will reduce the use of resources.

Walker, Richard Thomas. "Installation optimisation for marine energy converters to inform the designation process." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/14730.

Full text
Abstract:
Whilst a number of methods exist for the analysis of site availability and weather downtime via metocean exceedance, there is little available for the detailed analysis of holistic marine energy installation projects. Given the magnitude of expenditure relating to the installation phase of marine energy extraction it is essential that significant cost reduction is achieved in this area. This thesis presents methods for the analysis of marine operations, considering not just the at site work but the project as a whole. The methods developed consider multiple facets of installation in a geo-spatially diverse environment and utilize multiple resources, for example vessels. Consideration of not only the efficiency of work at site, but also the accessibility of the site due to vessel station keeping, mooring and transit limits is included. By considering the project in its entirety work may be scheduled in a realistic manner; including simultaneous operations and at site transit to any of multiple working locations. These methods, packaged as a whole, represent a valuable new tool for utilisation in this area. Novel application of the methods developed is demonstrated and highlights the value, importance and power of this type of analysis. Two marine energy installations are considered as case studies; the Wave Hub in south west England, and a tidal installation at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney. These applications demonstrate the knowledge which may be gained and, explicitly in the latter case, the significant cost reductions which may be achieved through the essential optimisation of the installation operations using this newly developed analysis tool.

As the retail industry grows more popular, ABCD, a world-class electronic commerce (e-commerce) business, is increasingly building new Fulfillment Centers (FCs) to support this rapid demand growth. It is integral for ABCD to validate the installation quality and functionality of Material Handling Equipment (MHE) in these newly built FCs so operations can avoid errors. To achieve this objective, ABCD introduced the Installation and Operational Qualification (IOQ) process in late 2014. While the IOQ process reduces early operational failures, it does not completely eliminate them. Inadequate IOQ and tighter installation timelines are leading to degraded installation quality, resulting in operational issues and costs for ABCD. As the FC network continues to grow, there is a need to improve installation quality to reduce early operational issues and enhance the FC start-up experience.
This project is a part of the ABCD Operation Engineering teams' effort to improve the existing IOQ process and the FC start-up experience. This initiative consists of three main phases. The first phase - the research phase - is dedicated to understanding the current processes and problem statement. It also includes a study of available data sources to discover failure patterns across different FCs. The second phase involves developing analytical frameworks and machine-learning models to uncover the most problematic equipment in the FC. The third phase focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of the current IOQ process based on Phase 1 and 2 findings, and identifying opportunities to better the process. The thesis summarizes the outcomes from all of these phases. The project focuses on improving IOQ coverage, efficiently reprioritizing the testing schedule, introducing threshold metric for installation quality, and exploring predictive and preventative maintenance opportunities.
This thesis also includes recommendations for refining the data-gathering process to improve future model outcomes. The ultimate goal is to improve FC installation quality and enhance the IOQ process to eliminate start-up issues. The approach taken and the recommendations proposed seek to approximate the ideal state as closely as possible. Incremental adoption of these recommendations will help deliver better-installed FCs, reduce early operational issues, improve start-up experiences, and strengthen ABCD's infrastructure.

Abstract:
AbstractSmart tightening development is part of the Industry 4.0 transformation with the introduction of smart tools, and preload in bolted assemblies is of major interest in today’s aircraft manufacturing process. So far, it has been difficult to estimate the importance of each parameter for tightening process quality, mainly because of the large number of combinations and configurations that exist. The present work aims at evaluating the effects and the interactions between different parameters that have to be taken in consideration in future torquing strategy. Many experimental tests have been conducted on an Automatica test bench using a Taguchi strategy and an analysis of the first main results is now presented, highlighting the complexity of the phenomena studied. All these points will help us to better understand tightening, so as to improve performance during installation, maintenance and repair.

Abstract:
Over the six months in which Vajiko Chachkhiani’s Living Dog Among Dead Lions was exhibited at the Georgian Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017, heavy rain was pouring inside the installation. This artificially generated process provokes thoughts on the nature of the here and now as well as of the afterlife and of the future appearance of the hut’s water-sensitive insides. Eventually, the spaces and furniture exposed to rain and water stagnation will begin to rot and disintegrate, and mould and moss might grow over them. Its viewers feel caught between what they see and what they hope to see; between their perceptions and expectations, in an exceptional time zone where ‘natural’ weathering is being performed as a subject of meditative observation.

Rusk, Todd, Ryan Siegel, Linda Larsen, Tim Lindsey, and Brian Deal. Technical and Financial Feasibility Study for Installation of Solar Panels at IDOT-owned Facilities. Illinois Center for Transportation, August 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36501/0197-9191/21-024.

Abstract:
The Smart Energy Design Assistance Center assessed the administrative, technical, and economic aspects of feasibility related to the procurement and installation of photovoltaic solar systems on IDOT-owned buildings and lands. To address administrative feasibility, we explored three main ways in which IDOT could procure solar projects: power purchase agreement (PPA), direct purchase, and land lease development. Of the three methods, PPA and direct purchase are most applicable for IDOT. While solar development is not free of obstacles for IDOT, it is administratively feasible, and regulatory hurdles can be adequately met given suitable planning and implementation. To evaluate IDOT assets for solar feasibility, more than 1,000 IDOT sites were screened and narrowed using spatial analytic tools. A stakeholder feedback process was used to select five case study sites that allowed for a range of solar development types, from large utility-scale projects to small rooftop systems. To evaluate financial feasibility, discussions with developers and datapoints from the literature were used to create financial models. A large solar project request by IDOT can be expected to generate considerable attention from developers and potentially attractive PPA pricing that would generate immediate cash flow savings for IDOT. Procurement partnerships with other state agencies will create opportunities for even larger projects with better pricing. However, in the near term, it may be difficult for IDOT to identify small rooftop or other small on-site solar projects that are financially feasible. This project identified two especially promising solar sites so that IDOT can evaluate other solar site development opportunities in the future. This project also developed a web-based decision-support tool so IDOT can identify potential sites and develop preliminary indications of feasibility. We recommend that IDOT begin the process of developing at least one of their large sites to support solar electric power generation.
