Whilst a number of methods exist for the analysis of site availability and weather downtime via metocean exceedance, there is little available for the detailed analysis of holistic marine energy installation projects. Given the magnitude of expenditure relating to the installation phase of marine energy extraction it is essential that significant cost reduction is achieved in this area. This thesis presents methods for the analysis of marine operations, considering not just the at site work but the project as a whole. The methods developed consider multiple facets of installation in a geo-spatially diverse environment and utilize multiple resources, for example vessels. Consideration of not only the efficiency of work at site, but also the accessibility of the site due to vessel station keeping, mooring and transit limits is included. By considering the project in its entirety work may be scheduled in a realistic manner; including simultaneous operations and at site transit to any of multiple working locations. These methods, packaged as a whole, represent a valuable new tool for utilisation in this area. Novel application of the methods developed is demonstrated and highlights the value, importance and power of this type of analysis. Two marine energy installations are considered as case studies; the Wave Hub in south west England, and a tidal installation at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney. These applications demonstrate the knowledge which may be gained and, explicitly in the latter case, the significant cost reductions which may be achieved through the essential optimisation of the installation operations using this newly developed analysis tool.

As the retail industry grows more popular, ABCD, a world-class electronic commerce (e-commerce) business, is increasingly building new Fulfillment Centers (FCs) to support this rapid demand growth. It is integral for ABCD to validate the installation quality and functionality of Material Handling Equipment (MHE) in these newly built FCs so operations can avoid errors. To achieve this objective, ABCD introduced the Installation and Operational Qualification (IOQ) process in late 2014. While the IOQ process reduces early operational failures, it does not completely eliminate them. Inadequate IOQ and tighter installation timelines are leading to degraded installation quality, resulting in operational issues and costs for ABCD. As the FC network continues to grow, there is a need to improve installation quality to reduce early operational issues and enhance the FC start-up experience.
This project is a part of the ABCD Operation Engineering teams' effort to improve the existing IOQ process and the FC start-up experience. This initiative consists of three main phases. The first phase - the research phase - is dedicated to understanding the current processes and problem statement. It also includes a study of available data sources to discover failure patterns across different FCs. The second phase involves developing analytical frameworks and machine-learning models to uncover the most problematic equipment in the FC. The third phase focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of the current IOQ process based on Phase 1 and 2 findings, and identifying opportunities to better the process. The thesis summarizes the outcomes from all of these phases. The project focuses on improving IOQ coverage, efficiently reprioritizing the testing schedule, introducing threshold metric for installation quality, and exploring predictive and preventative maintenance opportunities.
This thesis also includes recommendations for refining the data-gathering process to improve future model outcomes. The ultimate goal is to improve FC installation quality and enhance the IOQ process to eliminate start-up issues. The approach taken and the recommendations proposed seek to approximate the ideal state as closely as possible. Incremental adoption of these recommendations will help deliver better-installed FCs, reduce early operational issues, improve start-up experiences, and strengthen ABCD's infrastructure.

Progressive Web Apps (PWA) is a concept of enhanced web apps which aim to erase the difference between web and native apps. The concept of PWA introduces several benefits, including simpler distribution and development, which makes web apps a viable option for many businesses. The installation process of a PWA is different from native apps and this study aims to understand whether or not it has an impact on the users will to install the PWA. PWA:s are installed directly from the browser, rather than an app marketplace. Said installation process is suspected to be unknown to many which might influence the impact. In this study, several papers on the topic are studied. A PWA is developed from scratch which is used as a platform for a user test, hosting a brief introduction of the topic as well as guiding participants through the installation process. In conjunction with the user test a survey is conducted to collect the impressions from their experience in the user test. The result of the survey shows indications that the suspected lack of knowledge and experience was correct, and that the installation process is not to complicated.Additionally, results show that many probably will not bother to install a PWA, even if it is available. Therefore, I argue that the installation process does have an impact in its current form. Alternatives to the installation process used in this study do exist and are discussed in this paper.

The main goal of the thesis is application modelling method for selected business processes in a particular company engaged in telecommunications services. The theoretical part is focused on processes, process management and standards for the business process modelling. In the practical part are then described selected processes related to ABC satellite television services. These processes are designed by selected methodology. Under the proposed processes that take place after activation are calculated costs of operation the process (financial, human resources). These costs are calculated to the time when it is expected to 200,000 customers of ABC satellite television. Summary of costs is in evaluating the proposal.

Going against phalloculocentrism’s situation in a hom(m)o-sexual paradigm and structuration of the male gaze and moving towards a gyneacentric perspective, the thesis explores how a feminised process of reception and interaction with artworks might arise. My installation and moving-image practice-led research is driven by a central question: How might a feminised form of spatiality, based on a gyneacentric model, deform an audience’s phalloculocentric reading of an artwork? The purpose of this thesis is to find a practice-led feminist method of producing an artwork that actively represents the feminine and de-centres an audience’s (male) gaze. By dislocating the eye from the lens of a camera, I propose to alter an audience’s usual cinematic experience of an image of the feminine through my artwork. This is developed through my proposition for composing an experience of her image through inter-relational exchanges in order to shift the register of reception from gazing to “touching”. I claim this could provide a potential for an embodied feminised process of spatiality and perception. A method of cartographically mapping the feminine through diagrams, photographs, drawings and video is developed in the preparation and installation of the central artwork that structures the thesis, (f)low visibility, in a nightclub. Feminist (installation and video) practitioners’, Martha Rosler, Louise Bourgeois, Mona Hatoum and Pipilotti Rist, approaches to representing the feminine are also investigated. The preparatory designs attempt to subvert the potential for a voyeuristic reception and/or exhibitionistic composition of the installation. This forms an investigation into how the reception and interaction with a feminised image might arise through a tactile process of exploration. I propose that although (f)low visibility produced ungraspable feminised on-screen images it afforded embodied partially locatable inter-relational exchanges in its reception of her. Luce Irigaray’s and Donna Haraway’s theories of embodiment are developed and intertwined in my conclusion. I claim that interaction with and reception of monstrous cyborg images on-screen occurred through the navigation of a fantasy of intrauterine “touching” in (f)low visibility’s installation as a feminised process of spatiality.

Esta dissertação apresenta uma rede de relações – poéticas, visuais, conceituais, históricas,reflexivas e experienciais – em torno do processo e percurso artístico iniciado em 1990, mas especialmente a pesquisa desenvolvida durante o Mestrado em Artes Visuais, do PPGAV/EBA/UFBA, focada na cerâmica enquanto linguagem visual contemporânea, híbrida,que dialoga com questões associadas ao princípio de rede. Estrutura conceitual, a rede é nãolinear,que neste estudo integra várias dimensões do processo criativo, da arte, da cerâmica e da vida. Sendo assim, além das teorias específicas, das aproximações e diálogos entre artistas e obras afins, foi construída uma rede colaborativa de encontros e comunicações com as pessoas em torno da cerâmica utilitária no espaço da vida cotidiana para a celebração de momentos e a produção das instalações Imagens Amadas e Inventário, apresentadas na exposição final do Mestrado, denominada Convivendo. Também foi exposta a instalação Cerâmicas e mais Cerâmicas (after Kosuth) cujas obras trouxeram discussões sobre o conceito e a linguagem da cerâmica além do contexto tradicional – associada a outras linguagens, como a fotografia e o desenho, bem como as apropriações, o cotidiano e a vida –,refletindo sua inscrição na arte contemporânea.

This thesis investigates two different web server solutions. One is a commercial, proprietary solution known as the Windows solution that consists of Windows Server 2003, IIS and ASP. The other is a free, open source solution consisting of FreeBSD, Apache and PHP. The both solutions had the database MySQL as a common component. The hypothesis that was used in this investigation is as follows: IIS on Windows Server is not better than Apache on FreeBSD for e-commerce systems. To answer the hypothesis two empirical comparisons were conducted. One was a response time experiment testing two symmetrical web shops developed for the both solutions. For this response time test a stress test application was developed. The second comparison was a case study in the ease of installation of the two different solutions. The third empirical research method was a survey that was conducted among Swedish web hotel administrators. The survey identifies various factors that play a part when choosing one of the solutions. Open source users prefer performance, security and costs of software while Windows users prefer required knowledge, usability and compatibility. By analysing our result it is shown that the hypothesis is verified proving that an open source solution reports better performance because it has lower response times than the Windows solution. The results from the case study show that Windows is the easiest solution to install.Den här uppsatsen undersöker två olika webbservrar lösningar. En är kommersiell patentskyddad lösning känd som Windows lösningen som består av Windows Server 2003, IIS och ASP. Den andra lösningen är en gratis open source lösning som består av FreeBSD, Apache och PHP. Båda lösningarna har databasen MySQL som en jämensam komponent. Hypotesen som användes i denna forskning är; IIS på Windows Server är inte bättre än Apache på FreeBSD för e-handel system. För att kunna besvara hypotesen gjordes två empirisk jämförelsen. En var respons tid experiment som testade två symmetriska webb shops som var utvecklad av oss för bägge lösningarna. För detta experiment utvecklades en stress test program. Den andra jämförelsen var en fallstudie i lätthet av installation av dessa två lösningar. Den tredje forsknings metoden är en undersökning bland svensk webb hotell administratörer. Undersökningen identifierar olika faktorer som spelar roll när man väljer en av lösningarna. Open source användare föredrar prestanda, säkerhet och kostnad av mjukvara medan Windows användare föredrar obligatorisk kunskap, användbarhet och jämförbarhet. Genom analys av våra resultat har vi visat att vår hypotes är verifierad och detta bevisar att open source lösningen har bättre prestanda genom att den har lägre respons tid än Windows lösningen. Resultatet av fallstudien visar att Windows är lättare att installera.

à interpretação e direção. Estabelece diálogos simultâneos entre pressupostos da arte na
paisagem, que permitiram construir materialidades, um corpo plástico, numa ótica
sustentável, abordando novas manifestações de ecologia e processo antrópico, numa
poética ambiental e cénica. Impôs-se, por isso uma investigação transversal, que resultou
numa apresentação teatral fora do espaço convencional, complementada por uma
instalação imersiva, multidisciplinar, inserida numa paisagem sonora, física, visual onde
o processo de criação plástico e dramático são visíveis, assumidos como parte integrante

This report analyses and discusses the project in question, developed in two distinct
phases: an exploratory exercise and the presentation of a summary performance of
artistic residencies, which gave rise to research on the site-specific relationship, in the
process of artistic creation, performatics integrating the options and tools applicable to
interpretation and direction. It establishes simultaneous dialogues between
presuppositions of art in the landscape, which allowed building materialities, a plastic
body, in a sustainable perspective, approaching new manifestations of ecology and
anthropic process, in an environmental and scenic poetics. Therefore, a transversal
investigation was imposed, which resulted in a theatrical presentation outside the
conventional space, complemented by an immersive, multidisciplinary installation,
inserted in a sound, physical, visual landscape where the process of plastic and dramatic
creation are visible, assumed as an integral part of the work and illustrated by a
photographic exhibition.

The protection of the environment is becoming one of the most pressing
concerns of mankind in the 21St century. South African Legislation requires
an environmental impact assessment (EM) to obtain authorisation for
executing certain activities.
Constructing and operating a gas pipeline requires an authorisation from
the relevant authorities under the EIA legislation.
One of the objectives of an EIA is to ensure public involvement. South
African legislation stipulates guidelines for conducting public participation
but leaves voids for interpretation on how to most effectively apply these
guidelines.
This study investigates how an appropriate and cost and time effective
public participation process for proposed new Sasol Gas pipelines should be
conducted.
The method of investigation is to first address four sub-questions relating
to EIAs in South Africa; the meaning of public participation; public
participation as a component of EIAs; and specific problems and lessons
learned in some case studies.
These sub-questions were discussed and answered, respectively in
Chapters 2, 3, 4 and 5 of this report.
In Chapter 6 the student concluded and gave recommendations to
conduct an effective public participation process for Sasol Gas pipeline
projects. The research determined that the public participation process
recommended for these projects cannot be limited to one prescriptive
process as each project differs from the next.
Certain Sasol Gas pipeline projects need a very extensive public
participation process, whereas, a "limited" public participation process can
be applied on certain Sasol Gas pipeline projects and still be effective.
The public participation process to be followed for both types above, is
recommended in detail in Chapter 6 under the planning, participation and
exit phases. These two proposed processes are internally also flexible, as

L'objectif de ce travail est d'analyser théoriquement et expérimentalement la condensation des espèces inorganiques dans une installation de gazéification de la biomasse. Lors de la gazéification de la biomasse, des espèces inorganiques sont volatilisées et se condensent lors du refroidissement du gaz de synthèse. Ces espèces sont problématiques pour le procédé et doivent être éliminées avant la synthèse des biocarburants. Une étude thermodynamique a tout d'abord précisé la nature et la répartition des espèces inorganiques qui sont volatilisées lors de la gazéification ainsi que des espèces qui se condensent lors du refroidissement. Un modèle de condensation des aérosols issus de la gazéification de la biomasse a ensuite été construit à partir de d'une description mathématique des différents phénomènes mis en jeu (nucléation, croissance, agglomération et dépôts). Parallèlement un dispositif expérimental (ANACONDA) a été mis au point, construit et qualifié. Ce dispositif permet d'analyser la condensation d'une vapeur de KCl dans un écoulement pouvant comporter des particules de carbone se refroidissant à une vitesse de 1000 K/s. Les résultats expérimentaux obtenus ont mis en évidence une nucléation du KCl lors d'un refroidissement à 1000 K/s, la condensation de KCl sur les particules de carbone ainsi que le dépôt de KCl et des particules sur les parois. La condensation de KCl provoque une augmentation du diamètre aérodynamique des particules de carbone. La présence de particules dans l'écoulement permet de diminuer les dépôts de KCl aux parois de 25% à 40%. La comparaison de calculs simulant les expériences avec les données expérimentales a permis de quantifier les différents phénomènes et de valider le modèle. Enfin, le modèle a été utilisé afin de proposer des solutions pour limiter les dépôts de KCl aux parois des échangeurs dans une installation industrielle de gazéification de la biomasse.

Principles of design composition are commonly understood to pertain to geometrical systems for arranging parts in assembling a formal whole. Connection to socio-cultural 'meaning' and relevance arguably occurs primarily via the assumed divinity or universality of these systems. In the contemporary architectural world, where explicitly held beliefs in fundamental, geometrically defined principles or values have dissipated, guiding principles of composition appear to be obsolete. This seems particularly true in relation to work that highlights process - or change, responsiveness, interactivity and adaptability - since this implies that the composition remains in flux and unable to be grounded in the composition of form. While processually inflected architecture (referred to here as 'processual architecture'), has been an active field since at least the 1960s, it has been significantly developed since design experiments involving digital computation intensified in t he 1990s. For this field of work, both highly celebrated and criticised as superficial or unethical, any connection to 'meaning' or value that might be offered by principles of composition would appear especially lost. This thesis reviews, counterpoises and reorients these assumptions, arguing a case for the value of processual architectural that has not been previously articulated. After the last 10 to 15 years of digital experimentation, it is clear that digital technology in itself is not the primary issue, but simply part of a complex equation. The thesis articulates this 'equation' through the model of emergence, which has been used in the field with increasing prominence in recent years. Through both practice-based research and theoretical development, a processually inflected theory of composition is proposed. This offers pathways through which the potential of processual architecture might be productively developed, aiming to open this field of work into a deeper engagement with pressing contemporary socio-political issues. The thesis demonstrates how the cultivation of particular modes of attention and engagement, found to hold an implicit but nevertheless amplified significance within processual architecture, make it possible to develop an embodied awareness pertaining to an 'ethico-aesthetic know-how'. This know-how is acquired and matured through attention to the affective dimensions that arise through design activity. The thesis highlight aspects of design process and products that are routinely suppressed in architectural discourse, generating new insights into the importance of affect for design process, design products and the relations between them. The ethical dimensions of such an approach become especially poignant through the explicit connection made between design activity and the practices of everyday life. Relationships between architecture and the social become re-energised, in a radically alternative manner to the social agendas of modernism or the more literary critiques of post-modernism. Through detailed discussions of the specific, local conditions with a series of design projects I have undertaken, I argue how and why close attention to the affective dimensions of design process offers new and productive ways to approach research through design practice. This offers a response to the calls for new 'post-critical' forms of research through empowering both sides of a previously held divide: theory and practice.

This project can be seen as a collection of architectural explorations that originate from the concept of misunderstanding. The misunderstanding involves an unconscious transformation that can create something new and unexpected and is therefore an important element both in history and in an individual design process. Five examples of misunderstanding from the history of architecture are described in short texts. From each text a drawing is selected that becomes the starting point for a process where translation between alternating digital and analog representation techniques transform the original object, in multiple steps. For each transformation, a text follows, in which the story is reinterpreted and distorted. The last step in this process is a larger physical object that no longer resembles the original drawing, and which, by its ambiguity begins to live its own life. One theme that emerged during the process has been the relationship between architecture and figures or bodies.Detta projekt kan ses som en samling arkitektoniska betraktelser som tar sin utgångspunkt ur begreppet missförstånd. Missförståndet innebär en omedveten transformation som kan skapa något nytt och oväntat och är därför ett viktigt inslag både i historien och i en individuell designprocess. Fem exempel på missförstånd ur arkitekturhistorien beskrivs i korta texter. Utifrån dessa väljs ett antal ritningar som blir utgångspunkt för en process där översättningen mellan omväxlande digitala och analoga representationstekniker förvandlar det ursprungliga objektet i flera steg. För varje transformation följer en text där berättelsen omtolkas och förvrids. Det sista steget i denna process är ett fysiskt objekt i större skala vars gestalt är svår att härleda till den ursprungliga ritningen och som genom sin tvetydighet börjar leva sitt eget eget liv. Ett tema som utkristalliserat sig under processen har varit relationen mellan arkitektur och figurer eller kroppar.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) medför ett helt nytt sätt att arbeta där objektsbaserade 3D-modeller är den huvudsakliga informationskällan. Modellerna kan bära på stora mängder information i jämförelse med den traditionella pappersritningen som är begränsad till text, symboler och en 2D-visualisering av byggnaden. Att arbeta med BIM ställer helt nya krav på hur information ska struktureras för att säkerställa att den tolkas på samma sätt av alla aktörer i ett projekt och all den programvara som används för att hantera informationen. Den här rapporten behandlar installationer specifikt och klassifikationen av byggdelar som är grunden för att identifiera objekt i en modell. Vi har utrett BSAB 96 som är ett väletablerat system för klassifikation av byggdelar men i sin nuvarande utformning täcker det inte behovet för att kunna användas i BIM. Detta är en nyckelfaktor för att kunna koppla rätt information till BIM-objekten så att en obruten informationskedja kan erhållas. Vi förklarar teorin bakom klassifikationssystem, BSAB 96 i synnerhet, och hur de appliceras på BIM. De problemområden och utvecklingsbehov som finns ringas in och i en fallstudie föreslås två konkreta förslag på utvidgning av byggdelstabellen för installationer i BSAB 96; ett för praktisk tillämpning idag och ett baserat på en fullt integrerad datoriserad process.Building Information Modelling (BIM) represents a completely new way of working where object-based 3D models are the main source of information. The models can carry large amounts of information in comparison with the traditional paper drawing which is limited to text, symbols, and a 2D visualization of the building. Working with BIM creates new requirements on how information should be structured to ensure that it is interpreted in the same manner by all participants in a project and all the software that is being used to handle it. This report deals with HVAC especially and the classification of construction elements which is the basis for identifying objects in the model. We have investigated BSAB 96 which is a well-established system for classification of construction elements but in its current state it does not cover the needs for use in BIM. This is a key factor to be able to connect the right information to BIM objects. We explain the theory behind classification systems, BSAB 96 in particular, and how they are applied to BIM. The problem areas and development needs are highlighted and in a case study two concrete suggestions are proposed for expanding the classification table for HVAC construction elements in BSAB 96; one for practical used today and one based on a fully integrated computerized process.

Apres une presentation de la superplasticite et des procedes de formage associee a cette propriete, on decrit une installation pilote destinee a l'etude experimentale du formage superplastique et a la caracterisation du comportement des alliages d'aluminium. En particulier, les cycles optimaux de pression de formage ont ete determines pour la realisation de pieces types, notamment un cone dont le cycle de pression a des proprietes particulieres. On decrit ensuite quelques modeles mecaniques et rheologiques mis en uvre pour le pilotage du cycle de pression de formage. La precision et la validite de chacun d'eux, modele d'epaisseur uniforme, en anneaux ou elements finis, sont discutes. L'installation de formage dont le pilotage est base sur les modeles decrits a conduit a la determination des parametres rheologiques et a tester la formabilite de quelques alliages d'aluminium par l'essai de formage conique. Plusieurs procedures experimentales ont ete mises en uvre pour mesurer ces valeurs et les caracteristiques mecaniques et microstructurales du materiau apres formage. This bachelor thesis discusses the conveying power of the audio and visual media in an audiovisual creative process based on the concept of audiovisual dissonance and Circumplex Model of Affect (Russell, 1980) with its key components, valence and arousal. In this design process we use the research key concept of audiovisual dissonance as a design perspective.Dissonance can also be described as a contradiction, with this an audiovisual dissonance can be seen as a contradiction between the audio and visual media. Chion (1994) coined the term audiovisual counterpoint which he describes as when the picture and the sound doesn’t match. In this design process we strived to create dissonance between audio and visual representations of different emotions. To create these dissonances the design process uses the Circumplex Model of Affect (Russell, 1980) which is a way to organize emotions in a two-dimensional coordinate system in relation to each other and their experienced valence-arousal. Valence is the concept that describes if the emotion is positive or negative while arousal is the concept that describes how intense the emotion is. The proximity between each of the emotions is based on their similarities in how they are experienced. This study is based on the idea to get a better understanding of how the audio and visual media affects a person’s emotional experience and how dissonance could be created between these two forms of media. The study resulted in a creative process with a strong connection to previous research in affect and media technology related work procedures. The creation of a matrix based on previous research created a focus and an approach that was beneficial for the creative process. The study deals with questions about effect in cooperation with the audio and the visual medium. New questions have emerged where we question whether it’s the physical properties of the medium or their association in everyday life that determines the experienced affect.Detta kandidatarbete diskuterar ljud och bilds förmedlande krafter i en audiovisuell skapande process utifrån begreppet audiovisuell dissonans och Circumplex Model of Affect (Russell, 1980) samt dess nyckelbegrepp valence-arousal. Vi har valt att applicera undersökningens centrala begrepp audiovisuell dissonans som designperspektiv. Dissonans kan också beskrivas som motsägelse, en audiovisuell dissonans är då en motsägelse mellan ljud och bild. Chion (1994) myntade begreppet audiovisual counterpoint vilket han beskriver som när det audiella och det visuella mediet inte stämmer överens. Vi har i arbetet strävat efter att skapa dissonans mellan representationer av olika känslor i det audiella samt visuella mediet. Detta koordinatsystem baseras på att känslor som är placerade nära varandra har mer gemensamt än de känslor som är placerade långt ifrån varandra. Denna undersökning syftar till att kunna få en tydligare bild av hur det audiella och det visuella mediet påverkar en persons emotionella upplevelse samt hur en dissonans kan skapas mellan dessa två medier. Undersökningen resulterade i en skapande process med stark koppling till tidigare forskning kring emotionella stimuli samt medietekniska arbetssätt. Skapandet av en matris genom sammanställning av den tidigare forskningen skapade fokus och ett tillvägagångssätt som lett den skapande processen framåt. Undersökningen hanterar frågor kring emotionella stimuli i samverkan med det audiella och visuella mediet. Nya frågor har framträtt där vi frågar oss om det är de audiella samt visuella mediets fysiska uppbyggnad eller deras association till vardagen som ligger till grund för vilka känslor som framkallas.

This paper is about the subjectivity of the body, and what this means in terms of my artistic practice. Composed in two sections, the first section addresses issues of personal history as content, the use of language in relationship to visual art, and experimental language as a tool to communicate visceral knowledge. I discuss the feminist critique of cultural, artistic and academic hierarchies, and explore how these themes inform my work.
The second section examines the body of work I have developed within the MFA program. I explain the artists who have influenced my development, and give specific examples, whenever possible, of formal and conceptual influences. I use images of my own paintings, studio, and exhibitions to illustrate the progression of my practice. This dissertation investigates, in the context of South Africa (SA), the process economics of energy from biogas, and hence the financial viability establishing a biogas plant in the absence of a formal incentivisation programme. Firstly, the study set out to establish an improved understanding of the costs associated with the technology. Data on the capital- and running costs of existing biogas plants in SA were sourced by means of stakeholder interviews, and compared with published data on similar plants in countries where the biogas sector is more mature. Two biogas usage pathways were evaluated: biogas-to-electricity through a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system, and biogas-to-biomethane. Regression analysis was carried out on the observed costs, and this was used to predict future costs. A capacity-cost factor of 0.68 for biogas-to-electricity and 0.57 for biogas-tobiomethane was obtained. Statistical hypothesis testing revealed that the values are significantly smaller than 1, which indicates that economies of scale are observed in both cases. A Lang factor of 1.81 was determined, based on cost data from 20 medium- to large scale biogas plants in South Africa. Operational and Maintenance costs were determined to vary between R2.6 – R4.6 per Nm3 biogas produced where significant feedstock sorting and/or transport costs are present and R0.3 – R1.4 per Nm3 biogas produced where minimal feedstock sorting and/or transport costs are present. It was observed that energy can be recovered from biogas plants at a Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE) of 0.5 – 2 R/kWh in SA, which corresponds with the range of 1.8 – 2.8 R/kWh documented internationally, even though the LCOE in SA is generally lower that what is observed abroad, especially at plant capacities greater than 1 MW. Based on a financial analysis, a positive Net Present Value (NPV) for a medium-cost CHP plant where only electricity is utilised as income stream is possible from 0.3 MWe upward, with greater returns at higher plant capacities. For a biomethane plant, a positive NPV can be attained at plant capacities of 4 MWeq and higher. A comparison on the financial benefits of two different biogas usage pathways revealed that a biomethane plant has greater potential profitability than a CHP plant at capacities greater than 5 MWeq, whereas at smaller capacities, a CHP plant would yield better returns. The most attractive investment scenario evaluated was a 6 MWeq biomethane plant, where a Return on Investment (ROI) of 18% could be attained with a payback period of 8 years for a plant lifetime of 20 years. However, a risk analysis making use of Monte Carlo simulation revealed that such a project will only have an 91% chance of obtaining a positive NPV, which is below the set benchmark of 95%. Considering the high up-front capital investment associated with a large scale biogas project, it is anticipated that the financial risks associated with such a project would be too high to merit investment at current conditions in South Africa. This could, however, be mitigated if an additional income stream could be established in the form of an incentive, subsidy, grant, or alternatively a waste treatment gate-fee or fertiliser sales income. Lastly, if electricity and fuel prices in South Africa continue to increase at the rate observed over the past two decades, the business case for a single-income-stream biogas plant will become increasingly attractive and profitable in the near future.

Malfunzionamenti, errori umani, rilasci o eventi atmosferici possano innescare esplosioni, incendi ed emissioni nocive dalle proporzioni anche catastrofiche. La severità delle conseguenze degli eventi incidentali può essere ulteriormente amplificata dalla propagazione dello scenario primario, dall’unità di riferimento alle unità vicine, dando vita ad eventi che prendono il nome di Scenari Domino. Le vigenti normative introducono l’utilizzo di sistemi di protezione e di barriere di sicurezza, con lo scopo di ridurre l’entità dei danni causati dagli incidenti primari e la possibilità che l’evento si propaghi. Tali eventi sono influenzati dalla geografia e dalle condizioni climatiche degli ambiti territoriali nei quali sono condotte le operazioni. In particolar modo, condizioni climatiche avverse possono influenzare le performance delle barriere di sicurezza, espresse in termini di “Availability” ed “Effectiveness”. L’obiettivo principale del presente lavoro, è quindi quello di ottenere una valutazione quantitativa della riduzione delle performance dei sistemi di sicurezza per installazioni che operano in condizioni climatiche difficili, come le regioni dell’Artico. La metodologia proposta è stata testata su una reale installazione offshore posta nel Mare di Barents.

Os trabalhos, pensados inicialmente como vídeos, pelos quais foi experimentado romper com a estrutura narrativa do cinema tradicional, foram modificando-se no decorrer da pesquisa, desse modo, abrangendo o olhar sobre a instalação que continha o vídeo e a projeção. Passou-se, então, a explorar diferentes situações de apresentação espacial nas instalações propostas, muitas vezes, utilizando recursos computacionais de modelagem projetiva como suavização das áreas de projeção, delimitação da abrangência projetiva e inserção de múltiplos vídeos, bem como experimentou-se com interferências nas projeções. Para refletir sobre os trabalhos desenvolvidos, partiu-se de alguns artistas e autores que discutem o espaço de exposição e como o observador relaciona-se com ele, como Thommas Zummer, Andre Parente, Malcom Le Grice e Philippe Dubois. Mediante os conceitos de projeção, interface e membrana – abordados sob diferentes perspectivas do conhecimento – considerou-se o espaço de instalação em uma relação multidirecional entre o observador e o espaço de exposição.The research, "Interface: projection as semipermeable membrane", approaches a process of artistic creation that originated in the beginning of 2011. The works, initially thought as videos, by which it was tried to break with the narrative structure of traditional cinema, were modified in the course of the research, thus covering the view on the installation that contained the video and the projection. Then proceeded to explore different spatial presentation situations in the proposed installations, often using computational resources of projective modeling such as smoothing projection areas, delimiting the projective range and inserting multiple videos, as well as experimenting with interferences projections. In order to reflect on the work developed, it was used some artists and authors who discuss the exhibition space and how the observer relates to him, such as Thommas Zummer, Andre Parente, Malcolm Le Grice and Philippe Dubois. This project explores the areas of human perception and story narrative in moving images. Engaged by the research question, “Can spectators become co-authors in the process of a story narrative?”, the research focuses on exploring the co-existence and contradiction between the values of spectators and an author in a process of a narrative by developing a new potential narrative approach with multiple perspectives. I hypothesise that spectators could participate with the story narrative process as co-authors. My key method is to engage with spectators’ participation within a narration (story) by displaying story fragments across multiple screens simultaneously. The potential of having a story spread across multiple screens might bring further interest to authors to re-think the notion of a spectator and tell a story with multiple perspectives in a narrative process with spectators. In order to develop this project, I will use different approaches, such as Grounded Theory (Strauss & Corbin, 1998), Data Visualisation (Tufte, 1983), Action Research (Kemmis & McTaggart, 1988) and Heuristics (Moustakas, 1990), which I will explain in further details in each chapter of my exegesis.

Previous issue date: 2015-10-01This dissertation examines the nonlinear narrative of the novel Eles eram muitos cavalos written by Luiz Ruffato. The main question concern to the analogy between the novel's verb-space structure and the art-installation. The focus is on specifics aspects of the novel, such as the distinctive creative process that, in turn, coadunate to performance and plasticity that are related to installation art. Ruffato's novel, which, as a heterogeneous work, does not follow the regular poetics' prerogatives. Instead, it is a new creative literary composition in which the author, the work, and the reader are imbricated, emerging out of this intransitive experience that requires from the reader a dispersive unfolding of the novel's structure. To understand a composition whose parts are disconnected, you must see this composition as an limite-experience, as limit in which interiority, subjectivization, desire and eroticism are involved as just the concept of "outside", which means an unstopped way to resignification their intensive and multiples means. Therefore, the theme is divided into three chapters through which we approach the novel's creation from its familiarity with the hypertext and the necessary "outside" experience. In other terms, the topic is addressed by the Ruffato's novel relationship with an art installation, especially by the concept of spatial performance that can or can not present the possibility of verisimilitude. Ultimately, we state on the novel spatial narrativity as intranscriptible realism unless by meaning is imposed by the aesthetic art experience provided by Eles eram muitos cavalos. From authors such as Heidegger, Bataille, and Blanchot, this paper tried to elucidate the dispositif poetics that are articulated and are articulators of a work that evoke the human totality only intelligible in the paradigm of contemporaneity
Esta dissertação tem o objetivo geral de elucidar a construção não linear do romance Eles eram muitos cavalos, de Luiz Ruffato. A questão principal diz respeito à analogia entre sua estrutura verbo-espacial e a arte instalação. Preocupa-nos o processo de criação da referida obra em sua singularidade que, em muitos aspectos, coaduna-se às performances da plasticidade características de uma instalação. Ao apresentar uma composição heterogênea, este romance foge das prerrogativas poéticas usuais e se insere em uma nova ordem de composição literária em que autor obra leitor se imbricam de modo a criar uma experiência intransitiva que requer do leitor um desdobramento tão dispersivo quanto sua própria estrutura. Diante de uma composição cujas partes são desconexas entre si, seu entendimento requer uma experiência limite em que tanto interioridade, subjetivação, desejo e erótico se fazem presentes, quanto uma postura de fora é requerida em um esforço contínuo de ressignificações múltiplas e intensas. O tema está distribuído em três partes-capítulos em que abordamos sua construção a partir de sua familiaridade com o hipertexto e a necessária experiência do fora mediante sua fragmentação; seu parentesco com a arte-instalação, com destaque para a performance espacial que apresenta e possibilidade ou não de verossimilhança; e, por último, sua diegese enquanto realismo intraduzível senão pela presentidade obrigatória da experiência estética. O processo decisório nas instituições de saúde acontece cotidianamente e suas repercussões podem causar impactos positivos ou negativos para aqueles que as vivenciam. As ações de decisão habitualmente estão centralizadas no corpo de gestores da instituição e, portanto, compete a eles a responsabilidade de criar estratégias para que escolhas realizadas tenham o propósito de levar a instituição a atingir seus melhores resultados. Nesse sentido, esta pesquisa tem como objetivo apreender as repercussões profissionais e pessoais para os trabalhadores de uma instituição pública de saúde, decorrentes do processo decisório da gestão. Trata-se de um estudo qualitativo realizado em um Hospital Público de referência em ensino do estado de São Paulo, após aprovação do Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa sob n. CAAE: 47979115.0.0000.5411. Participaram deste estudo 25 trabalhadores do quadro efetivo institucional, pertencentes a diferentes categorias da equipe administrativa e equipe de saúde. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas, previamente agendadas, realizadas em locais escolhidos pelos participantes e gravadas em aparelho digital. O tratamento dos dados foi realizado segundo a Análise de Conteúdo e os resultados emergentes apontam para três categorias de análise que emergiram dos discursos dos sujeitos da pesquisa: “O conhecimento dos trabalhadores sobre o organograma institucional está focado na proximidade com os cargos”; “O sistema decisório da gestão influencia na vida profissional do trabalhador de saúde” e “O sistema decisório da gestão exerce influência na vida pessoal do trabalhador”. Os discursos foram analisados com base na literatura e documentos oficiais sobre o tema envolvendo Processo Decisório. Assim, esse estudo implementa ações de mudança no processo tradicional “centralizado” das instituições de saúde, no sentido de propor a ruptura de ações dominantes e decisões autônomas da gestão. Neste sentido, como produto dessa pesquisa foi elaborado um vídeo que constitui um canal de comunicação no processo admissional, visando acolhimento, inclusão nos processos hierárquicos e à integração entre os gestores e seus liderados no sentido de possibilitar novos olhares e viabilização de parcerias para um melhor convívio no ambiente profissional.

Data were achieved by semi-structured interviews, previously scheduled, at a place of choice of the interviewer. All interviews were recorded. The analyses of the data were based on the principles of the analysis of context. Results pointed out three categories of analysis “ The knowledge of the employees about the institucional organogram is focused on the approach of the positions”; “The system of decision making in management influences the professional life of the health worker” and “ The system of decision making in management influences the personal life of the health worker”. The analyses of the interviews were based on literature and documents about the thematic of Process of decision making. Thus, this study implements action for changing the traditional centralizing process in health institutes and proposes the break of dominant actions and autonomous actions of management. As part of the results, a video was produced, as an instrument of communication during the admission process which focuses on hosting, inclusion in the hierarchical processes and on the integration between employees and managers. These action will bring new insights and possibilities of partnerships for a better professional environment.

This essay aims to discuss and problematize the process of development of art works of a collective. To achieve this, questions that involve the net creation, the Umwelt concept and aesthetics experience are tackled. To reach the process itself, models and different creation stages are proposed to develop a methodology from the study of phases. It pursuits to use a whole basis to analyse the process, since that creation cannot be understood as being linear and also there are oscillations during the works elaboration, in a continuous net of influences as much objective as subjective exchanges. The documents of the process of the art group SCIArts are used, as declarations of the members in dialog with specialists of various areas. As bibliographic reference, the reflection is based upon the studies of Salles, Shustermann, Dewey, Uexküll, Lévy, Laurentiz and artists such as Oiticica and Duchamp, since the research has a multidisciplinary domain. It perceives the process and appraises how the group struggle with questions that appear during the art-making and that modifies the work in progress. This essay is within the field of aesthetic technology, especially at installation-based art domain, works developed by the mentioned collective. A presente dissertação discute e problematiza o processo de desenvolvimento e de obras de arte de um coletivo. Para isso, são abordadas questões que envolvem a criação em rede, discussão sobre coletivos inteligentes, conceito de Umwelt e experiência estética. Para abarcar a questão do processo, são propostos modelos de autoria bem como fases da criação, a fim de desenvolver uma metodologia a partir do estudo por etapas. Procura-se utilizar uma base holística para avaliação do processo criativo, pois a criação não pode ser entendida como linear e há oscilações durante a gestação de obras numa contínua rede de influências e trocas tanto objetivas quanto subjetivas. São utilizados documentos de processo do grupo SCIArts, bem como depoimentos dos integrantes em diálogo com teóricos de áreas diversas. Como referencial teórico, a reflexão se fundamenta nos estudos de Salles, Shustermann, textos de Dewey, Uexküll, Lévy, Laurentiz e artistas como Oiticica e Duchamp por ser uma pesquisa de caráter multidisciplinar. Observa-se o processo e avalia-se a maneira como o grupo lida com questões que surgem durante o fazer artístico e modificam a obra em desenvolvimento. A presente dissertação insere-se no campo das estéticas tecnológicas, mais especificamente em instalações interativas, obras mais desenvolvidas pelo coletivo em questão. Procura-se avaliar as relações existentes entre tecnologias e processos criativos, bem como abranger parte da complexidade do fazer artístico colaborativo e multidisciplinar na arte contemporânea

Ett ljudfenomen som uppstår i samband med luftkomprimeringen i den nya D7 motorn har uppmärksammats som ett problem av kunderna. Ljudfenomenet som resonerar i hytten bidrar till en obehaglig arbetsmiljö. Uppdraget har i sin tur varit att utveckla en luftkompressormonterad ljuddämpare mot en kravspecifikation som eliminerar detta fenomen. Med hjälp av diverse verktyg och en spiral produktutvecklingsprocess utfördes ett flertal iterationer av dem koncept som kan tänkas lösa problemet. Dessa iterationer konstruerades i mjukvaran CATIA V5 för att sedan beställas in som fysiska prototyper i materialet Pa12. För att bekräfta prototypernas funktionalitet utfördes simuleringar samt fysiska tester. Det resulterande arbetet blev ett konceptförslag till Scania CV AB som uppfyller kravspecifikationerna. Lösningens ljuddämpningsförmågan reducerade ljudfenomenet med 73% i genomsnitt. Med hjälp av observationer och analyser under de fysiska testgenomförandet uppmärksammades komplikationer som bör åtgärdas. Det mest kritiska med det nuvarande konceptet är dem vibrationer som uppstår. För att åtgärda detta problem kommer det krävas ytterligare infästningspunkter på motsvarande sida till de nuvarande. All mätdata i denna rapport är modifierat. Detta för att skydda känslig information.A noise phenomenon that arises in connection with air compression in the new D7 engine has been noted as a problem by the customers. The sound phenomenon resonates in the cabin contributes to an unpleasant work environment. The mission, in turn, has been to develop an air compressor-mounted silencer against a requirement specification to eliminate this phenomenon. Using various tools and a spiral product development process, a number of iterations were made of those concepts that could solve the problem. These iterations were engineered in the CATIA V5 software, then ordered as physical prototypes in the material Pa12. To confirm the prototypes' functionality, simulations and physical tests were performed. The resulting work became a concept proposal for Scania CV AB that meets the requirements specifications. The solution managed to reduce the sound phenomenon by 73% on average. With the help of observations and analyzes during the physical test implementation, complications were noted that should be addressed. The most critical on the current concept is the vibration that occurs. To fix this problem additional attachment points will be required on the corresponding side to the current ones. All data in this report have been modified. This is to protect sensitive information.
