Traditional Indian screens utilize beautiful intricate patterns derived from nature to attain
spatial definition. Even though we utilize them as static objects with rigid boundaries, the
beauty of a screen provokes wonder as to what's on the other side. This sparked a question
of What if the screen itself was modular? This question became the basis of my thesis
exploration. The work is divided into two distinct studies. The first being the exploration of
making rigid materials flexible via pattern developed from basic geometry. The second being
the application of the first process on a 1:1 scale resulting in an interactive instillation. The final
installation demonstrates modularity of pattern in creating a rigid material flexible by defining

The purpose of this master thesis has been to explore how Skanska Installation can be organized and managed from a Feedback of experience perspective, and define how an IT solution for knowledge management can be designed by identifying the company's current needs in communications, structural capital and information management. The study follows a deductive approach with a qualitative starting point. Using the literature studies the theoretical references were built, which is of great importance when using a deductive approach. Furthermore the report is based on a case study on two different projects: Herrgården and Nattsländan. With the collected empirical data from the case study the analysis was carried out with the theoretical framework as a basis. This finally led to the conclusions of the study. The purpose of a communications plan is to show how the communication between employees must be managed to best move the project forward. Emphasis is placed on the formal and informal communication of the company. I encourage to use the IT platform where shared documents are collected and notices of meetings are sent out. The advantage of this is that all information is gathered in one place, the disadvantage is that it is sometimes difficult to get the project participants to use the platform under time constraints. Finally when the project is completed it is important not to lose the knowledge that has been gained while working. It is therefore necessary to consider the transfer of knowledge to facilitate the work in future projects.<br>Syftet är att ta fram ett underlag på hur Skanska Installation kan organiseras och ledas ur ett Erfarenhetsåterförings- perspektiv samt definiera hur en IT-lösning för kunskapshantering bör utformas genom att identifiera företagets nuvarande behov inom kommunikation, strukturkapital och informationshantering. Studien följer ett deduktivt arbetssätt med en kvalitativ utgångspunkt. Genom litteraturstudier byggdes den teoretiska referensramen upp, som är av stor vikt vid ett deduktivt arbetssätt. Vidare bygger rapporten på en fallstudie av två olika projekt: Herrgården och Nattsländan. Den insamlade empirin från fallstudien analyserades med den teoretiska referensramen som utgångspunkt, vilket ledde fram till studiens slutsatser. En kommunikationsplan visar hur kommunikationen mellan medarbetarna bör skötas för att på bästa sätt föra projektet framåt. Stor vikt läggs vid den formella respektive informella kommunikationen på företaget. Jag uppmuntrar användning av en IT-plattform där gemensamma dokument samlas samt kallelser till möten skickas ut. Fördelen med denna är att all information är samlad på ett och samma ställe, nackdelen är att det ibland är svårt att få projektdeltagare att använda plattformen under tidsbrist. Slutligen när projektet är avslutat gäller det att inte tappa den kunskap man samlat på sig under arbetets gång. Därför är det nödvändigt att tänka på kunskapsåterföring för att kunna underlätta arbetet i framtida projekt.

Implementations and installations of Enterprise Resource Planning systems (ERP-systems)are often time consuming and complex processes. Technicians who workwith installations of ERP-systems require tools and utilities in order to perform theirwork in a time efficient and qualitative manner.This study is performed at the company Industrial and Financial Systems (IFS) inLinköping and has focused on the technical documentation that describes theinstallation process, "IFS Installation Guide". This guide is one of the most importanttools available to facilitate the installation process of the ERP-system, IFSApplications.The purpose of this thesis is to analyze and suggest improvements to the usability andworkflow aspects of IFS Installation Guide. This study is based on seven semistructuredinterviews and one observation with IFS employees working on variousconsultancy services within IFS ‘key regions’. The result from the interviews highlightsa number of problems, which have been analyzed and investigated together withrelevant literature.The findings of this study demonstrate that it is of utmost importance to have a cleartarget audience, easy channels for feedback and that information must be easy tofind in order to develop and maintain high quality in technical documentation.

Airframe noise is currently of a comparable level to engine noise for an aircraft on approach with high-lift devices and landing gears deployed. The landing gears are a large contributor to the overall airframe noise in this situation. Main landing gears are typically installed beneath a lifting wing. The wing surfaces act as scattering surfaces for the noise generated by these landing gears, and the non-uniform flow around the wing affects both the propagation and strength of the noise. This thesis focuses on investigating the propagation and scattering of installed landing gear noise sources. Boundary element methods are capable of computing acoustic scattering by large and complex geometries, such as a complete aircraft geometry. However, due to their use of Green’s functions, flow effects can only be approximated. As a result, the refraction of acoustic waves due to a non-uniform flow is not accounted for. A uniform flow formulation based on a Lorentz-type transform is typically employed with boundary element methods. The effect of neglecting refraction on the propagation and scattering of landing gear noise sources is determined in this thesis. Investigations are conducted using computational aeroacoustic methods that solve the linearised Euler equations, which account for the refraction of acoustic waves due to non-uniform flow. Using computational aeroacoustic methods, the effect of non-uniform flow due to circulation on the acoustic scattering is quantified as the difference in acoustic scattering over uniform and non-uniform base flows. These investigations are conducted using both single frequency and broadband monopole sources, and both single-element and multi-element airfoils. Increasing the angle of attack, increasing the Mach number, and deploying flaps all increase the circulation around the airfoil. The effect of varying these parameters is investigated systematically. It is shown that for a source in the approximate position of a landing gear with flow conditions similar to that of an airliner on approach, the largest difference observed is at single frequencies for an airfoil configuration with a deployed flap. Otherwise, the differences are small, and in some cases so small that they can be considered negligible. It is shown that moving the source to a position above the airfoil and using a higher Mach number gives a larger difference, although this is not representative of a landing gear source. A new method is proposed to generate a broadband input signal for use with a computational aeroacoustic solver that gives a specified power spectral density at a given radial distance from a monopole source. A signal that is equal in power across a specified range of frequencies is generated using this method. The effect on the frequency content of the scattered noise from a broadband source installed beneath a lifting wing is investigated using this generated signal. It is shown for a single-element airfoil that the major contributor to the obtained power spectral density is the distance of the source from the airfoil. Varying the angle of attack and Mach number has only a small additional effect on the power spectral density. It is then shown that flap and slat deployment has a larger effect on the computed power spectral density due to the additional reflective surfaces. Existing boundary element method formulations that estimate uniform and nonuniform flow effects are evaluated for their suitability for landing gear noise scattering predictions. It is shown that the uniform flow formulation is more suitable due to a simplifying assumption made in the derivation of the non-uniform flow formulation. An existing realistic landing gear noise model is coupled with a three-dimensional acoustic boundary element method solver. The landing gear noise model applies scaling laws to directional databases for isolated landing gear components in order to estimate the total far-field noise. The implemented coupling methodology is used to compute the sound pressure level on a ground plane beneath a realistic scattering aircraft geometry. The geometrical effect of flap deployment is investigated using sources of constant strength for each configuration. It is shown that the effect of flap deployment is to increase the sound pressure level directly below and in the region immediately surrounding the aircraft. The effect of source strength reduction due to circulation around a lifting wing is then included in the predictions. This results in a large decrease in the predicted sound pressure level on the ground plane with flap deployment.

Rete Mirabile is my new installation piece combining scientific principles with live computer generated music. The title is a Latin term meaning "Wonderful Net," which I use to refer to the highly convoluted network of biological data that drives my installation. The sonification of data, computer modeling of biological processes, kinetic sculptures, and user interactivity are central parts of the installation. The paper is organized as follows: First, brief history of the forerunners that inspired my work is given. This includes a short discussion on how John Cage and David Tudor influenced current artists works, and how those works have influenced my own work. Then I review current installation works that share similarities with my own. Finally, a detailed discussion and analysis of the construction and function concludes the paper.

Ombord på Sjöfartshögskolans fartyg Calmare Nyckel, fanns en anläggning för rening av oljehaltigt vatten. Eftersom anläggningen började bli gammal och det var svårt att få tag i reservdelar, samt att nya innovativa lösningar uppkommit under senare år, önskade skolan byta ut den gamla anläggningen mot en ny från Marinfloc AB. Författarna till denna rapport fick i uppdrag av skolan att ta fram installationsunderlag i form av ritningar, materialförteckningar samt instruktioner på hur arbetet bör genomföras. Även en analys skulle genomföras, där den gamla och den nya anläggningen jämfördes med avseende på renhet hos det separerade länsvattnet. Syftet med projektet var att ersätta befintlig länsvattenseparator mot en ny modernare anläggning, få den besiktigad och godkänd av berörda myndigheter. Syftet med denna rapport är att redogöra för projektets genomförande, enligt projektdirektivet. Resultatet av projektet var att Calmare Nyckel blev utrustad med en fullt fungerande, modern anläggning för rening av länsvatten. Den nya anläggningen renade länsvattnet mycket effektivt och bidrar därmed till mindre med föroreningar i världens hav.<br>On board the Maritime Academy vessel Calmare Nyckel, they had equipment for treatment of oily water. Since the equipment was beginning to get old, and that it was difficult to find spare parts, as well as new innovative solutions had arisen in recent years, the academy wanted to replace the old equipment with new from Marinfloc AB. The authors of this report were assigned by the academy to provide the installation basis in form of drawings, material list and instructions on how the work should be carried out. Also an analysis would be carried out, where the old and the new equipment were to be compared with regard to the purity of the separated bilge water. The purpose of the project was to replace the existing oily water separator with a new modern one, get it inspected and approved by authorities. The purpose of this report is to give account for the project implementation in accordance to the projects directive. The result of the project was that Calmare Nyckel had been equipped with a full functioning, modern equipment for purification of bilge water. My research explores contemporary painting's assertion of itself in a post-media present characterised by a diminished focus on the properties of any singular medium, and a movement toward a freedom to expand the passages and exchanges between them. Circumstances, a conjunction of technological change and a shift in attitudes, require a general recontexturalisation of painting that accommodates its evolving relationship to the photograph, the screen and the lens. This paper engages with historical matters. As the expanded exhibition project Baroque 'n Roll mimes or lip-syncs a historical period, the research drags the paradigm established in most conventional retellings of the Classical Greek Myths, specifically that of Robert Graves by referring to chapters as "books". Everything old is new again. The past is nothing but a previous present and the expanded painting installation project Baroque n' Roll attempts to re-connect the viewer with the classical traditions that still significantly inform the nutrient-bed of contemporary culture. The framework of the research draws a parallel between the banality of the suburban Australian sprawl with the excesses of the hyper-commercialised retail enterprises and uber-monolithic shopping enclaves like the Westfield conglomerate and the sumptuous, over-the-top decadence of the 17th Century Baroque. In the exhibition Baroque 'n Roll; Mise en scene pastiches tropes in contemporary painting, architecture, performance and technology, by creating an installation space within the gallery which drags the Frick Collection's Fragonard Room found in New York. The purpose of the room is to frame a series of oil paintings located in a style imitative of painting from the baroque period. In this sense Baroque 'n Roll "covers" a past aesthetic used to allegorise the continued relevance of painting in the face of evolving technology while drawing a connection between the wealth and decadence of the 17th Century French Court and the imitation wealth and decadence of the "Hungary Jack parklands of suburban Australia".

In the past, these test means were specific for each test aircraft. This thesis aims to introduce a design proposal providing a special light-colour-space experience for preschool aged children. At this age, the basic aspects of visual perception are well-developed. However, unlike adults, children do not possess the experience and memories that enable complete visual perception. My goal was to create a space where children can play and, in the meantime, meet various stimuli that they are not used to, broadening their visual sensitivity by utilizing the rhythm of light and colour combinations. Based on earlier studies, I investigate three main areas: children’s perspective, their relationship with colours, and the learning process itself that takes place in their brain while embracing knew knowledge. Conclusions drawn from the literature review are complemented by studies of forms, shadows, and materials. The design of the installation itself is presented through conceptual sketches and models. As the main motive of the installation I chose a circular labyrinth where, during wandering, new experiences, colours, forms, atmospheres, and emotions reveal themselves as one progresses towards the centre. Darkness too plays an important role in the design. The changes in light level follow the steps of this external and internal journey, until in the last layer of the labyrinth children can experience almost complete darkness in a relatively safe environment.

The Unsettled Object is an installational art project that considers the instability of objects in regards to their assembly, classification, and presentation, underpinned by the context of the museum and supported by Michel Foucault’s notion of the classificatory grids he discusses in The Order of Things: an archaeology of the Human Sciences. (Foucault,1970) The artefacts are being fabricated as a response to the corporeal body-on-display; its surfaces, spaces and volumes. An underlying notion of temporality and mutability is indicated in the processes of making, the objects, material responsiveness and the devices employed in the presentation of the work.

<p>Rapporten undersöker om det är möjligt att använda Clonezilla för distribuerad installation av Windows Vista som alternativ till Symantec Ghost. Ett ytterligare krav är att installationen ska vara automatiserad och inte kräva något extra arbete efter installationens slut. Dessutom ska datorerna vara redo att användas i en Windows-domän efter en färdig installation.</p><p>Programmet Clonezilla är av typen open source och är fritt att använda medan Symantec Ghost är en kommersiell produkt som kräver flertalet licenser beroende på antalet datorer. Clonezilla körs i Linux och saknar grafiskt gränssnitt, Symantec däremot har ett eget gränssnitt för att överskådligt hantera datorer och distribuera operativsystem i välkänd Windows-miljö. Båda lösningarna testas under flera praktiska experiment i labbmiljö. De två programmen jämförs och utvärderas gällande prestanda och användarvänlighet. Resultaten visar på att skillnaden gällande prestanda är marginell. Gällande användarvänlighet är skillnaden för de båda programmen större då Symantec erbjuder ett grafiskt gränssnitt tillsammans med hjälpavsnitt för produkten. Båda lösningarna fungerar för ändamålet och har olika fördelar respektive nackdelar.</p>

The background for this study is a request from Technip related to the need of installing of long length umbilicals utilizing large capacity vessels designed for installation of steel pipelines. The installation vessel, Apache, operated by Technip, has for this reason been studied. Two computer programs developed by Marintek, SIMLA and RIFLEX, have been used for this study. A literature study has taken place on the background theories of the programs. They are both based on the finite element method, and they analyze given problems very similarly. Nevertheless, one main difference was found, and that difference is in how they solve the dynamic time domain analyses. RIFLEX uses a Newmark β-method, while SIMLA uses HHT α-method. A lay scenario and 20 sea states have been defined and modeled in both RIFLEX and SIMLA. The chosen lay scenario is at 360 meters water depth. The seabed is completely flat, thus no free spans will affect the result. All sea states are regular waves with wave propagation run directly against the course of the vessel. The umbilical is a thin and light weight umbilical with a diameter of only 9 cm. Both static and dynamic analyses have been run for all sea states. Results from all sea states have been thoroughly studied and described. It was found that for this lay scenario, RIFLEX run the analyses more than twice as fast as SIMLA. The static results are close to being identical for both programs, showing that the modeling must be correct considering the overall arrangement and orientations for the lay scenario, and considering the umbilical data like size, weights and the different stiffness properties. The dynamic results show that for all results for sea states without compression, the two programs are quite similar. It is shown that RIFLEX also at this stage shows larger values than SIMLA, but the curvature of the plots are very similar. There is a big change of the RIFLEX results for the sea states where there are induced compressions at the touch down point. The compression seems to trigger a variable which makes irrational results for all contact elements of the umbilical and the sea bed. Many peaks can be observed, which is illogical. SIMLA handles the compression very well, and do still return stable and smooth graphs as a result. As well as the smooth and reliable graphs, the end results from SIMLA are for all sea states smaller than for RIFLEX. This would in a real life project allow installations in heavier sea with use of SIMLA. A run in SIMLA was experienced as a much slower than RIFLEX. All in all, it has been observed large differences in the dynamic results, especially for the load conditions inducing compression. There is one known modeling error, there might be more, and there is one main difference in the way the programs do dynamic analyses. It is reasonable to believe that the HHT α-method used in SIMLA are the reason for the smoother and more reliable graphs.

The work aims to unpack the nature in which we hear and interact with sound, space, and gesture. It is a project that recontextualizes the typical practice of performance and installation modes of music and art. The event uses 12 loudspeakers spaced around a gallery to create a densely layered sonic atmosphere that gently fluctuates and slowly evolves. Throughout the event, the audience is encouraged to freely navigate the gallery and experience the subtle changes in sound as they manifest in the space.

Suction caissons are a foundation system for offshore structures which offer a number of advantages over traditional piled foundations. In particular, due to the method of installation used, they are well suited for deep-water applications. The suction caisson consists of an open ended cylindrical shell, which is installed below the seabed in a sequence which consists of two loading phases. The caisson is first installed part way under self weight, with the installation being completed by lowering the pressure within the cylinder and thus allowing the ambient water pressure to force the caisson into the ground. This thesis examines a number of structural issues which result from the form of the caisson — essentially a thin walled cylinder — and the interaction of the caisson with the surrounding soil during installation. To do this, variational analysis and nonlinear finite element analysis are employed to examine the buckling and collapse behaviour of these cylinders. In particular, two issues are considered; the influence of the open end, and the interaction between the cylinder and soil on the buckling and collapse loads. First, the behaviour of open ended cylinders is considered, where the boundary condition at the open end is allowed to vary continuously from completely free to pinned, by the use of a variable lateral spring. This lateral spring restraint may be considered to represent the intermediate restraint provided by a ring stiffener which is not fully effective. The effect of various combinations of boundary conditions is accounted for by the use of a multiplier on the lower bound to the buckling load of a cylinder with classical supports. The variable spring at the open end may also be considered to be an initial, simple representation of the effect of soil restraint on the buckling load. More complex representations of the soil restraint are also considered. A nondimensional factor is proposed to account for the influence of this spring on the buckling load. One combination of boundary conditions, where the upper end of the caisson is pinned, and the lower end free (referred to as a PF boundary condition), is found to have buckling and collapse behaviour which is unusual for cylindrical shells. Buckling loads for such shells are much lower than would be found for cylinders with more typical boundary conditions, and of similar dimensions. More unusually however, PF cylinders are shown to have positive postbuckling strength. The behaviour is found to be a result of the large flexibility which results from the low restraint provided by the PF boundary conditions. This is shown by continuously decreasing the flexibility of the cylinder, by increasing the axial restraint at the pinned end. It is shown that this results in a large increase in buckling load, and a return to more usual levels of imperfection sensitivity. In particular, with an intermediate level of axial restraint, buckling loads and imperfection sensitivity are intermediate between those of PF shells with no, and with full, axial restraint. Overall however, collapse loads for PF cylinders with no additional restraint are well below those of cylinders with stiffer boundary conditions, for equal geometries. Eigenvalue buckling of cylinders fully and partially embedded in an elastic material are examined, and two analytical solutions are proposed. One of these is an extension of a method previously proposed by Seide (1962), for core filled cylinders, to pin ended cylinders which have support from both a core and a surrounding material. The second method represents the elastic support as a two parameter foundation. While more approximate than the first method, this method allows for the examination of a wider range of boundary conditions, and of partial embedment. It is found that the buckling load of the shell/soil system decreases as the embedment ratio decreases. Collapse of fully and partially embedded cylinders is also examined, using nonlinear finite element analysis. The influence of plasticity in the soil is also considered. For cylinders with small imperfections, it is found that the collapse load shows a large increase over that of the same cylinder with no soil support. However, as the size of initial geometric imperfections increases, it is found that the collapse load rapidly approaches that of the unsupported cylinder. In particular, in weak soils the gain in strength over the unsupported shell may be minimal. The exception to this is again PF cylinders. As these have relatively low collapse loads, even very weak soils are able to offer an increase in collapse load over the unsupported case. Finally, a summary of these results is provided in the form of guidance for design of such structures.

Överlagrad kommunikation är förmågan att kommunicera genom en elektrisk ledare vilken samtidigt fyller en annan funktion. För att upprätthålla kommunikationen krävs att en slags signalmodulering införs som kan slå samman information i ena änden av ledaren och urskilja samma information i den andra änden. I följande rapport kommer överlagrad kommunikation studeras för en matningsledare bestående av en DC-spänning, matningen spänningsätter en pulsgivare genom en kabel innehållande flera andra ledare. Mätningar har utförts på nuvarande system, både hur en typisk pulsgivare fungerar och hur dess installationskabel kan tänkas ha betydelse för slutresultatet. I en förstudie presenteras relevanta lösningsförslag på hur kommunikationen kan upprätthållas genom matningsledaren, förslagen med störst potential tas vidare genom att simuleringar och mätningar utförs. För att hitta de relevanta lösningarna undersöks grundläggande pulsgivarinformation tillsammans med en studie på den nuvarande marknaden. Till sist presenteras fördelar och nackdelar mellan tre olika kommunikationsexempel och tillsammans jämförs de med lösningen att dra en extra kabel vid installationen, framförallt är det prisskillnaden och platsen kretsarna tar som är av intresse. Eftersom beräkningskraftiga FPGA-kretsar var en tillgång som kunde utnyttjas skapades grunden till kommunikationen där, ingen programmering av dem beskrivs dock i rapporten. Slutgiltig lösning inkluderar kopplingen mellan en FPGA och installationskabeln. Resultatet är en robust och tillsynes säker FSK-kommunikation som har verifierats i simuleringar och fysiska uppkopplingar. Godtycklig data kan skapas i FPGA-kretsarna, skickas som halv-duplex och läsas i andra änden kabeln.

Genom detta arbete installerades en färdskrivaranläggning, Voyage Data Recorder, på sjöfartshögskolans fartyg Calmare Nyckel. Syftet med installationen var att skapa ett hjälpmedel till läraren då denne ska ge återkoppling på nautikerelevernas manöverövningar med fartyget. Arbetet utfördes i projektform under sista året på sjöingenjörsprogrammet samt bitvis under de tre efterföljande åren. Resultatet blev en anläggning som spelar in informationen från den bryggutrustning som bedömts vara central för att korrekt kunna återspegla en körning med fartyget, samt möjligheten att kunna återuppspela denna information.<br>Through this exam work, a Voyage Data Recorder was installed on the Kalmar Maritime Academy’s school ship Calmare Nyckel. The purpose of the installation was to create a tool for the teachers when they are giving feedback on the students’ manoeuvring exercises with the school ship. This work was made in project form during the last year of the marine engineer programme and partly during the following three years. The result was an installation that records the information from the bridge equipment that was judged to be central to be able to correctly mirror the manoeuvring of the ship, and the possibility to replay this information.

En effet, les six livres de La Bibliothèque ne sont pas des livres à lire car ils ne contiennent que peu ou pas de texte. Il s'agit d'interroger, au fil de l'écriture de cette thèse, la perte de l'écriture au sein de cette bibliothèque paradoxale, privée de classement, afin d'en déterminer la ou les construction(s). Ce qui nous permettra d'analyser les enjeux du tressage entre lieu d'exposition et non-lieu de l'écriture. Faire d'un non-lieu, un lieu, est l'enjeu initial de la Bibliothèque. En fin de compte, la Bibliothèque a lieu en tant que passage jamais accompli. Le lieu, c'est l'oeuvre toujours à faire, le seuil marqué -entre ce qui est fini et ce qui n'a pas encore eu lieu.

Detta arbete visualiserar värdeflöde av solceller vid tre olika typer av solcellsinstallationer följt av förslag till förbättring gällande ett växande installationsföretag i Sverige. Genom värdeflödesanalys kan vi se tydliga samband mellan snabb tillväxt och logistiska problem, där spårbarhet, lokaler och personal är viktiga faktorer som behöv bindas samman för att skapa ett så optimalt flöde som möjligt. Resultatet är delade i två grupper. En grupp består av visualisering och information kring hur värdeflödet ser ut och den andra av vilka förbättringsmöjligheter företaget har för sin framtida verksamhet. Vi kan också se att företaget har stor potential att öka sin lönsamhet genom att via affärssystem utveckla sin logistikhantering samt sammankoppla företagets olika instanser för att nå en mer effektiv installationsprocess.<br>This report visualizes the value stream of solar cells at three different types of installations, followed by proposal of improvement at a growing installation company in Sweden. Through value stream mapping, we see a clear connection between a fast growing rate and logistical problems, where traceability, facilities and staff are key factors, which needs to be connected to create as optimal flow as possible. The results are divided into two groups. The first consists of visualization and information of the current value stream and the second of what kind of improvement we suggest the company takes into consider to go even further. We can also see that the company has great potential to increase its profitability by implementing ERP to its logistical department and to connect the other departments to reach a higher level of efficiency.

The Ultimate Water System is destined to be a learning tool for engineering students to develop skills in control engineering. The system has been in design and various stages of construction for several years. However, before this thesis, the pumps had never been run and the instruments had never been mounted.
The plan for this thesis was to complete the installation of the instrumentation and electrical components of the Ultimate Water System to the point where the system could be run under automatic control. The control system and user schematics developed for this thesis would not be complex, but adequate to provide a commissioning interface for the system and prove the operation of the completed system in automatic control.
The control system hardware originally installed was no longer supported by National Instruments, so its replacement with a modern National Instruments controller was included in the thesis. This involved replacing the existing National Instruments Field-Point FP-2010 Real Time controller with a National Instruments CompactRIO 9012 controller. Retrofitting the CompactRIO controller required extensive control panel rework, including relocation of the control system on the panel, re-wiring and terminal modifications.
At the start of this thesis the Ultimate Water System had pipe-work mounted equipment such as pumps, flow meters, flow valves and flow control valves installed. However no level transmitters or level switches were fitted to the tanks. The instrument control panel had been wired for the original NI controller but not installed in the cabinet. No power wiring, instrument wiring or pneumatics had been installed between the cabinet and the system.
The plan to complete the required works under-estimated the time required for the controller and field equipment installation. This resulted in a reduction in the scope of the thesis. The revised thesis delivered a complete and operational system with calibrated instrumentation and a LabVIEW commissioning program with proven control capability.
James Kurz, a fellow student, was completing his thesis based on the CompactRIO controller and HMI for the UWS in parallel with this thesis. The content of our work was discussed with Graeme Cole to ensure this course of action did not compromise our completed works.
Future enhancements for the system are included in this thesis. Some of the suggestions are considered necessary to enable the system to continue to operate such as the inclusion of filters to protect valves and flow meters.

The last four years have been intense. The discoveries in the studio, the struggles with my readings and writings, having my work discussed and criticized, the close contact with other artists, scholars, curators and museums, combined with my travels abroad and the experience of living in a metropolis like London, enlightened my practice, enabling me to see from where my work came and find some of the questions it poses. Researching art history proved to be helpful in establishing the context where Installation Art emerged and developed. Claire Bishop’s critical writings provided me with the theory to understand the installation approach to the viewer, and Michael Fried’s criticism of ephemeral works of art and his claims for the autonomy of the art object, established the starting point of my research. My explorations into sculpture brought studio-life at the centre of my creative process and allowed me to look at installation with fresh eyes, reaffirming its importance within my practice and giving me the objectivity necessary to be critical as well. Thinking in terms of ‘making’ increased my awareness of the connections of my work and material culture and brought to the surface the role that audience and objects play in my work. The variety of media I explored and my interest in addressing art institutions and art history made it clear that I am not interested in formal experiments but in working from within the system of values, ideas and practices that form the whole of our culture, visually and theoretically, high and low. This report is organized in seven sections plus references and three appendices. The first section is a brief account of my educational and creative background followed by a shortened version of the proposal I submitted at the end of the first year. The next four sections constitute the main part of my investigation, reflecting the development of theory and practice during the doctorate. The last section is a general conclusion about the whole process. The style of writing reflects the subjective process of describing and analyzing my path throughout the art doctorate. The text is a collage of data, personal thoughts, quotes, aphorisms, diagrams, remarks, doubts and opinions; a bricolage that mirrored my creative process. I owe a lot to my doctorate colleagues and tutors, who helped to push my art further and strengthen me as an artist. A housing society in the municipality of Umeå have under a period found interest in lowering their heating costs for the property. The property consists of 4 buildings in total with 3 of them being a multi-family residential containing 36 apartments in total and one of the buildings is an office building. The housing society was interested in knowing what a geothermal heating system would cost and how long the payback time would be. With the help of the old drawings the property was drawn in Revit and used to calculate the heat loss from different layers of the climate barrier and heat loss from the ventilation system. The internal heat generation was calculated by using standard values. When the total heat losses were calculated, and the internal heat generation was known the yearly energy needs were calculated by using a duration diagram. Then the yearly energy needs were compared to the actual yearly energy consumption of district heat and the software Nibe Dim was used to simulate three different alternatives. The investment that showed best result showed that the total cost for the investment would be 1 800 000 SEK and the annual saving 75 000 SEK/year. The payback time for the investment would however be as high as 24 years.<br>En bostadsrättsförening i Umeå kommun har under längre tid varit intresserade av att sänka kostnaderna för uppvärmningen av fastigheten. Fastigheten består totalt av 4 byggnader där 3 är flerbostadshus med totalt 36 lägenheter och en kontorsbyggnad. Bostadsrättsföreningen var intresserade av att veta vad en installation av bergvärme skulle kosta och hur lång payback-tid det resulterar i. Genom att rita upp fastigheten i Revit med hjälp av ritningar kunde klimatskärmens skikt och drift av ventilation sammanställas för att beräkna energiförlusterna. Den interna värmegenereringen beräknades med hjälp av schablonvärden. Med de totala värmeförlusterna och den interna värmegenereringen kunde det årliga energibehovet beräknas med hjälp av varaktighetsdiagram. När det årliga energibehovet var känt jämfördes det med den årliga fjärrvärmeanvändningen och programmet Nibe Dim användes för att välja ut tre olika alternativ. Billigaste installationen av bergvärme visar att av de tre alternativ som presenteras skulle det innebära en investeringskostnad på 1 800 000 kr med en besparing på 75 000 kr/år. Återbetalningstiden för investeringen blir emellertid så hög som 24 år.

I Sverige finns det mycket skog att tillgå och en del av skogen används som energikälla för uppvärmning av hus. Många hus värms upp av pelletspannor och det finns många omoderna pelletspannor runt om i Sverige. Denna rapport syftar till att bygga om en pelletspanna av modell Ariterm PX21 från år 2009 med hjälp av lambdareglering.Brännaren idag har ingen teknik som kontrollerar förbränningen. Syftet med lambdaregleringen är att en lambdasond, som ska styra matarskruven till pelletsbrännaren, ska installeras och därmed styra förbränningen. Frågeställningen för arbetet är om en installation av lambdareglering förbättrar förbränningen och i sådana fall hur lång tid det tar innan investeringen lönar sig.En lambdasond installerades på rökröret och två Arduinos programmerades och installerades tillsammans med ett relä som är kopplat till matarskruvens strömförsörjning. Mätningar av avgaserna har genomförts både före och efter installationen och en förbättring på värdena NO, NOx och CO2 uppmättes vid lambdareglering. Vidare förbättrades verkningsgraden och bränsleförbrukningen. Förbränningen kan därmed antas vara mer fullständig med lambdareglering jämfört med utan. Efter inköpskostnaderna för installationen och besparingarna på pellets är installationen intjänad på en säsong.<br>There is a vast amount of forest in Sweden and parts of that is used as an energy source to heat up homes. Many homes are heated with pellet burners and some of these are old and inefficient. The purpose of this report is to rebuild a 2009 Ariterm PX21 pellet burner by installing a lambda controller.Currently, the burner has no built-in technique that controls the combustion. The purpose of the lambda controller is to control the pellet feeder to the burner with a lambda transmitter and by that control the combustion. The report aims to answer if that installation will improve the combustion and how long it will take until the investment is profitable.A lambda transmitter has been installed on the funnel and two Arduinos has been programmed and installed together with a relay connected to the feeder’s electrical supply. Exhaust measurements have been performed both before and after the installations. There was an improvement on NO, NOx, and CO2 after the installation. There was also an improvement of the efficiency and fuel consumption. Therefore, the installation of a lambda controller can be considered to improve the combustion. With the expenses made and the savings on pellet consumption, the installation will be profitable within one season.

Ayant comme point de départ les premières expérimentations de Nam June Paik avec les téléviseurs au début des années 1960, cette étude suit l’évolution historique de l’installation vidéo en parcourant cinq décennies de création. La problématique de l’espace, fil conducteur de cette recherche, nous amène d’abord à la constitution d’une typologie. Fruit de l’étude de l’évolution des formes principales de l’installation vidéo, cette classification a pour objet l’œuvre sous sa forme aboutie, c’est-à-dire installée. Néanmoins, cet état n’est que le résultat final d’un long processus. Divisée en quatre étapes, l’étude de la mise en espace de l’œuvre soulève des questions cruciales liées à l’acquisition, l’exposition et la conservation de l’installation vidéo. Une fois que l’œuvre est installée, elle s’articule autour d’un espace-temps virtuel, celui de l’image vidéographique, et d’un espace-temps réel, celui du dispositif plastique, analysés dans la troisième et dernière partie. The question of space is the basic thread of the analysis. It has led to the constitution of a typology that examines the evolution of the main forms of the video installation. This classification focuses on the artwork that is already installed. However, this state is the outcome of a complicated procedure. Divided into four steps and thoroughly examined, this process raises some crucial questions concerning the acquisition, the exposition and the conservation of the video installation. When installed, the artwork acquires two spatiotemporal dimensions, namely the virtual space and time of the video image and the real space and time of the installation, both analysed in the third chapter. <p>This project has been developed at the company Gavlegardarna. The companyowns a large part of the buildings of Gävle and two of them are the objective ofthe project. Gavlegardana is highly concerned about the environment; for thisreason, they cooperate on the subject with the energy management from theirtechnical department.</p><p>Gävle is one of the Swedish cities where the DH (district heating) network isdistributed, arriving to most of the dwellings, industries and commercialbuildings. As DH uses environmentally friendly sources of energy,Gavlegardana is introducing it in its buildings.</p><p>Electrical radiators and boilers were installed in the buildings when the price ofelectricity was more affordable than nowadays. The price of the electricity canbe considered 1,23 SEK/kWh while the DH price is 0,45 SEK/kWh.</p><p>Consequently, this is another reason why the objective of the company at thepresent time is to replace electrical space heating systems by means of districtheating.</p><p>The energy balance of the buildings is analysed in order to study their currentenergy situation. This entails the consideration of heat gains and lossesinvolved. The heat gains of the building are the heat from solar radiation whicharrives at the building trough the windows, the heat internally generated (bypersons, lighting and other devices) and the heat supplied. The heat losses are composed by the transmission trough walls and windows, the infiltrations, the heat used for hot tap water and the ventilation losses.</p><p>An important part of the work required to calculate the energy balance hasconsisted of the collection and organization of all the data (areas, types ofmaterial, electrical devices, lighting, number of employees, opening hours...).This data comes from the drawings of the buildings provided by the companyand from the information gathered during the visits to the installation. In addition, the ventilation flows were measured in-situ using the tools provided by Theorells.</p><p>Gavle Energi, the DH distributor company, has been contacted in order to fixthe cost and other details related to the district heating connection. The heatexchanger models, selected from Palmat System AB, are TP20 for Building Aand TP10 for Building B. TP20 provides 100 kW of heating and 0,4 l/s of hot tap water and TP10 provides 50 kW and 0,31 l/s respectively. The capital cost is 187500 SEK which includes the heat exchangers and the connection cost.</p><p>As the secondary circuit is not currently installed because the existing system iscomposed by electrical radiators, the installation of the piping network in thebuilding has been designed. The radiators’ power is calculated taking intoaccount the need of heat in each room which is estimated as the transmissionlosses. This need of heat calculated is higher than the energy currently supplied which means that the thermal comfort is not achieved in all the rooms of the buildings.</p><p>In spite of using more energy for space heating, the change of heat sourceentails a lower energy cost per year. The selected radiators are from Epeconand the investment cost (including the installation) is 203671 SEK. The brand of the selected pipes is Broson and the investment cost of the total piping system is 66000 SEK.</p><p>The initial investment of the new installation is 457171 SEK, considering the DHconnection, heat exchangers, radiators and pipes. If the initial investment istotally paid in cash by the company the payback will be fulfilled in 6 years. Incase of borrowing the money from the bank (considering an interest rate of 5%), two possibilities can be considered: paying back the money in annual rates over 15 years or 30 years of maturity. The paybacks are 11 and 8 years respectively.</p><p>After designing the DH piping system in the buildings, estimating the total costs of the investment and studying the project’s feasibility by suggesting different payment options, some possible energy savings are recommended.</p><p> </p><p>The first of the options refers to the transmission losses trough the windowswhose values’ are considerably high. Using a glass with a lower U-value, theselosses can decrease until 66% (with triple glass windows). Consequently, thepower required for space heating can also be reduced until 26%.</p><p>Regarding the ventilation, rotating heat exchangers are currently used, whichentails the problem of smells mixture detected by the users of the buildings. By changing them with flat-plate heat exchangers, the problem is solved and the efficiency is increased from 66% to 85%. The new heat exchanger cost is340387 SEK and it has a payback of 10 years.</p>

This thesis is centered around the design of a grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) roof installation at a specific location in Oslo, Norway. The motivating factor in this study has been the growth of the solar industry globally, while there has been little to none larger PV investments in Norway. The objective is to investigate how much renewable PV energy that can be produced from the designed system, with an electrical focus. Factors such as the suns position during each day of the year, the shadings on modules, the electrical effect of shading and bypass diodes, and other factors influence the production of a PV installation. Due to the complexity of power production in a PV system, the simulation software PVsyst was used as support. A 3D representation of the building and shading elements was constructed in the simulation program for shading calculation purposes. Meteorological data from local weather stations in Lier, Ås and Blindern was compared with meteorological data provided by interpolation and satellite images. The distance between modular rows was dimensioned after a shading criterion so that there would be no shading from other modular rows during spring equinox (March 21st). The modular tilt was adjusted (from the optimal tilt angle of 40 degrees) in order to reduce shading loss and improve the performance ratio of the system. The number of module and inverter types and manufacturers was limited to three different module types, and four different inverter series. The simulated production from the three best alternatives, based on performance ratio and production were compared with the energy consumption in the building. Simple economical evaluations of the three best alternatives have been performed using the simple payback method and life cycle costing. As a result of the limited area on the roof, the shading objects and the dimensioning criteria (maximize performance ratio and production of the system) it was found that the module tilt was 20 degrees. The modules in the system are directed towards geographical south, and there is a pitch distance of 2 meters between the module rows. The resulting three final alternatives were two polycrystalline alternatives and one monocrystalline alternative. The polycrystalline alternatives used the same REC modules and different inverters, one from Eltek and the other from SMA. The monocrystalline alternative was simulated with SunPower modules and SMA inverters. The installations have a simulated energy production of 22.4, 22.9 and 31.0 MWh/year, which would cover the average energy consumption of a household in Norway (20.4 MWh/year). However, the installation will only contribute to reduce the energy consumption in the six storey commercial building by approximately 1 % per year. Comparing the simulated productions and the consumption in 2011, it is found that the installation will not result in a surplus of energy which could have been injected into the grid. The installation will therefore not change the buildings customer status to a surplus customer (plusskunde). With the simplified economical evaluation it is found that the energy from the PV installation will cost more than the energy agreement of today and it is triple the yearly average market price of electricity the last three years. The polycrystalline alternative with SMA inverters was the least expensive alternative of the three and the polycrystalline alternative with highest production. The monocrystalline alternative gave best simulated production and performance ratio of the three alternatives, but was the most expensive alternative.

Den dokumenterade nyttan med att undervisa på ett varierat vis har gjort att Uppsala universitet vill ge sina hydrologistudenter möjlighet till mera fältarbete. Detta skall göras genom att installera grundvattenrör i vilka grundvattnets nivå samt kemiska sammansättning kommer att undersökas. Detta ställer krav på att området där rören installeras har en sådan geologi och topografi så att fältarbetet blir givande. Därför eftersöks områden med egenskaper som ger variationer mellan rören. Variationer i grundvattennivå förväntas främst uppkomma av olika lagerföljder eller en lutande markyta. Variationer i grundvattnets sammansättning förväntas främst bero på huruvida man befinner sig i ett inströmnings- eller utströmningsområde. Efter en undersökning av grundvattenrör i fyra redan existerande fältområden konstateras det att flera av dessa besitter några av de eftersökta kvaliteterna. Därför kommer ett av dessa områden att utökas med flera nya rör. Det valda området ligger i Marsta cirka 10 kilometer norr om Uppsala. Marsta har flera fördelar, exempelvis en variation när det gäller lagerföljder som skapar möjligheter att jämföra grundvattennivån mellan rören och diskutera resultaten. Vidare kommer en grundvattenrörsinstallation i nämnda område att gynna flera aktörer vilket ytterligare ökar nyttan. Efter en genomförd marknadsundersökning väljs företaget Zublin Scandinavia AB till att utföra installationerna. I framtiden kan flera av de andra undersökta områdena komma att bli aktuella för användning eller utökning. Då kan denna sammanställning användas för att ge grundläggande fakta om platserna och rören.<br>The documented benefits of teaching in a varied manner have motivated Uppsala University to provide hydrology students with the opportunity of having more fieldwork. This will be done by installing groundwater tubes in which the groundwater level and the chemical composition will be studied. This requires that the area where the tubes are installed possesses such a geology and topography so that the field work is rewarding. Areas with features that provide variations between the groundwater tubes are therefore sought. Variations in the groundwater level are expected primarily to depend on different stratigraphies or sloping land surfaces. Variations in groundwater composition are expected to mainly depend on whether the sampling sites are located in a recharge or discharge area. After having performed an investigation of ground water tubes at field sites that already exist, it is concluded that several of them possess some of the desired qualities. Therefore one of these areas will be expanded with several new tubes. The chosen area is in Marsta, about 10 kilometers north of Uppsala. Marsta has several advantages, such as a variation in stratigraphy that creates opportunities to compare the groundwater level between the pipes and discuss the results. In addition, an installation of groundwater tubes in the region mentioned above will most possibly benefit more people, which further increases its usefulness. A marketing study was performed and the company Züblin Scandinavia AB was chosen to carry out the installations. In the future, more of the other investigated areas may be considered for use or extension. This compilation will then be used to provide basic facts about the areas and the groundwater tubes.

The installation of instruments and devices required to fully automate a laboratory flotation column, and the configuration of the software required to drive the column from a PC terminal was accomplished. Beside the normal Input/Output link required, and as an application, the system was configured to perform stabilizing level control through feedback control loops. Three parallel software control loops were built, manipulating, alternatively, the underflow, feed or washwater streams to control the level.<br>The level was calculated through the readings of up to three pressure transducers Proportional, Proportional-Integral and Proportional-Integral-Derivative control were used in the feedback loops. In the process, problems related to the accuracy and range of valid level calculation, and to the use of washwater as the manipulated variable were identified. Some changes to current industrial practice are suggested in order to correct these problems.

The purpose of this project is to use the tools and methods used when developing a product to develop a large hanging installation for a business wishing to strengthen their identity. The business is that of a local gym, Crossfit Walleye. The business continuously strives to develop their members as athletes as well as their gym as a space which portrays the identity of the business.By introducing an installation, Crossfit Walleye hopes to strengthen their identity and continue in their development. The installation shall blend in with the current gym environment and also enhance the atmosphere of its environment. Therefore the problems which were undertaken through this project include discovering how the business’ image could be displayed through a large, hanging installation, what form the installation would take, and determining what components and manufacturing methods would be necessary to bring the installation to fruition.The methods used through this process included examining all aspects of the problems set out, examining the current gym environment, conducting interviews of both the business owners and the members, and observing other current products which would fulfill the problems set out in similar ways. Solutions to the problem were modeled in various ways such as both physically and digitally, and in all sizes such as scaled-down and life size. The manufacturing methods and materials were also explored for producing the separate components.The final product resulted in a large hanging installation which conforms to the requirements set out by Crossfit Walleye. It resembles three hanging banners which would be placed in the corner of the large gym space. The final piece fits in with its current surroundings through shape, color, and feeling, as well as strengthening the atmosphere of the gym. By following a technical method and utilizing processes such as those used in product design, a sculptural installation was realized which adds interest and a visual focal point to the gym environment and strengthens Crossfit Walleye’s image.
