Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Food Technology))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.
The use of egusi melon in soup has been domesticated and egusi has predominantly been regarded as a secondary crop. The aim of this study was to evaluate the functional characteristics of egusi seed (Citrullus lanatus subsp mucosospermus) hydrocolloid and oil in instant egusi soup. An instant production of egusi soup by adding boiling water to an instant soup mix will promote the availability of this nutritious seed as a healthy meal option. Egusi oil was successfully extracted from egusi seed using supercritical carbon dioxide method. The percentage oil yield which measures the amount of oil derivable from egusi seed ranged from 46-53% w/w. There was a significant difference in the oil yield as pressure and temperature are increased at a constant CO2 flow rate of 30 g/h. The proximate composition of egusi oil was determined using standard AOAC method. The moisture contents were 1.3, 2.0 and 1.9% w/w, respectively for EO1 (60oC and 450 bar), EO2 (55oC and 600 bar) and EO3 (75oC and 600 bar). EO1 was significantly (p ≤ 0.05) lower in moisture content compared to EO2 and EO3. The fat content was 99.1% w/w (EO1), 98.3% w/w (EO2) and 98.9% w/w (EO3), with no significant difference in the three oil samples. The fatty acid composition was analyzed using gas chromatography. The fatty acid content of egusi oil was high in polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, which was identified as linoleic (62%) and oleic (15%) acids. The saturated fatty acid (undecylic, myristic, palmitic and stearic) composition of egusi oil differed significantly (p ≤ 0.05) with EO1, having the lowest compared to EO2 and EO3. The index of atherogenicity (IA %) were significantly low 0.35, 0.38 and 0.38% w/w for EO1, EO2, and EO3, respectively. The thrombogenicity index (IT %) were 0.08, 0.09 and 0.09% w/w for EO1, EO2, and EO3, respectively with no significant difference. Peroxide Value (PV) measured using auto titrate Titrino plus, ranging from 11.60 for EO1 milliequivalents peroxide/kg to 12.60 for EO2 and 11.89 milliequivalents peroxide/kg for EO3. The oxidative stability index (OSI) was measured using Methrohm Rancimat at 120°C, expressed as the induction time of oxidation was 10.2, 11.5 and 5.3 h for EO1, EO2, and EO3, respectively, with E03 significantly higher than EO1 and EO2 (p ≤ 0.05). The iodine number, determined by AOAC direct titration method was high and ranged from 95 g/100 g for EO1 to 129 g/100 g for EO3, with EO3 being significantly high (p ≤ 0.05). The nutritional and functional properties of defatted egusi flour and hydrocolloid extracted using supercritical carbon dioxide extraction was also successfully achieved. Proximate analysis of defatted egusi (DEF) flour after supercritical extraction was carried out according to standard AOAC procedures. The moisture content of DEF ranged from 5.3 to 10.1% w/w, crude protein 48.3 to 60.4% w/w, crude fibre 3.4 to 4.5% w/w) and ash 5.3 to 6.8 % w/w). The protein content of defatted egusi flour differed significantly (p ≤ 0.05) between samples. The amino acid compositions of DEF showed glutamic acid had the highest concentration of 12.9, 11.8 and 9.8 mg/100 g for DEF1, DEF2, and DEF3, respectively with a significant difference (p ≤ 0.05) across the samples. In functionality, the water absorption and solubility index at a low temperature of 50oC ranged between 52.5 to 57.6% w/w and 68.0 to 73.3% w/w respectively for DEF1 to DEF3, which significantly differed between samples. The final viscosity of defatted egusi flour ranged from 126.7 to 126.3 cP, which differed significantly (p ≤ 0.05) between samples. Egusi flour is high in protein 60% w/w and carbohydrate 25% w/w was treated with hot water to extract its hydrocolloid. Functional properties of egusi hydrocolloid for the three defatted flour shows a stable emulsifier as the breakdown viscosity remained constant at (8.00 cP). Breakdown viscosity of egusi hydrocolloid confirmed its stability.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Recent developments in embedded systems give robots access to the Internet and make them more flexible and capable of performing more complex applications. However, these robots are still limited in terms of size, CPU power, storage resources and memory. Consequently, these robots have only been manufactured for certain specific applications and cannot be re-used for other applications. This presents us with a challenge to design a software framework - Robot Colony. The Robot Colony enables robots to be suitable for a wide range of applications, not originally received from manufacturers, to achieve greater functionality, flexibility and utility. This research outlines the architecture and functionality of the Robot Colony to support the collaboration between devices in the P2P community and also analyse the JXTA platform, which was the framework originally proposed. Lastly we present a customized P2P architecture that specifically addresses the interaction betweensoftware components across the network. We further discuss the following technologies applied in theframework: * XML-based Directory Service Provider * HTTP-based publish/describe control commands * Remote Process Invoke To fully complete the project, a thorough evaluation of the framework based on either the JXTAplatform or the customized P2P channel has been conducted. This evaluation provides basic statistics data for the proposed framework design and implementation. Further more, we have presented a realtime Demo at the Smart Device lab of the Queensland University of Technology.

Abstract:
In 13th century Europe, the German bishop and scholastic philosopher Albertus Magnus was one of the most influential writers on the natural world and theology. This thesis investigates the relationship between humans and animals in his Quaestiones super de animalibus and De animalibus. In writings on medieval history the theologically enforced boundary between humans and animals is both emphasized and treated as a given. This study nuances the picture presented by previous scholars by highlighting an alternative natural philosophical discourse on humans and animals. Using discourse analysis, I argue that the differences that Albertus used to differentiate humans from animals were based on an understanding of similarities rather than opposites. To Albertus, the human was one species in the animal kingdom, thus sharing many basic functions with other animals. His understandings entailed a theory of essential differences between species but also allowed for divisions based on gradation and relativity. This study sheds new light on the complex relationship between humans and animals in medieval Europe.

Abstract:
An economic operation relies, after all, upon one single thing. Upon one of the most elementary things, that is, simply: the use of an object. Such is the root of any economic act, i.e. of any act which, at some time, purports to be useful or profitable. But one effect entailed by such an act is to cancel all the value that such an object may instantaneoulsy present (such as its spell, drollery or, yet, its oddness). In other words, the use of an object implies that the sensitive value of that object be substituted by another sort of value, namely its use value. However, as a matter of fact, the useful employment of something is in no way automatic. Indeed, such a useful employment of things is actually equivalent to a deliberate opposition to the usual course of things, which consists, on the contrary, of a useless expenditure of all things... Still, from a general point of view, such a deliberate act against this usual course of things only achieves, after all, to always increase it. Just because such an act (thus, not being automatic), yet before it may have started to operate, first has to dissipate for itself a whole bunch of available forces. All of this leads us to acknowledge that the true product of an economic operation is always only a better squandering of the riches at disposal. It is according to this point of view that my research has focused on the notion of Degrowth, by combining Georges Bataille’s theory of “general economy” with economist Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen’s works

Abstract:
We are drowning in massive data but starved for knowledge retrieval. It is well known through the dimensionality tradeoff that more data increase informative but pay a price in computational complexity, which has to be made up in some way. When the labeled sample size is too little to bring sufficient information about the target concept, supervised learning fail with this serious challenge. Unsupervised learning can be an alternative in this problem. However, as these algorithms ignore label information, important hints from labeled data are left out and this will generally downgrades the performance of unsupervised learning algorithms. Using both labeled and unlabeled data is expected to better procedure in semi-supervised learning, which is more adapted for large domain applications when labels are hardly and costly to obtain. In addition, when data are large, feature selection and instance selection are two important dual operations for removing irrelevant information. Both of tasks with semisupervised learning are different challenges for machine learning and data mining communities for data dimensionality reduction and knowledge retrieval. In this thesis, we focus on co-selection of instances and features in the context of semi-supervised learning. In this context, co-selection becomes a more challenging problem as the data contains labeled and unlabeled examples sampled from the same population. To do such semi-supervised coselection, we propose two unified frameworks, which efficiently integrate labeled and unlabeled parts into the co-selection process. The first framework is based on weighting constrained clustering and the second one is based on similarity preserving selection. Both approaches evaluate the usefulness of features and instances in order to select the most relevant ones, simultaneously. Finally, we present a variety of empirical studies over high-dimensional data sets, which are well-known in the literature. The results are promising and prove the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed approaches. In addition, the developed methods are validated on a real world application, over data provided by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT). The purpose is to propose the application models from our methodological contributions to diagnose the performance of rail dry port systems. First, we present the results of some ensemble methods applied on a first data set, which is fully labeled. Second, we show how can our co-selection approaches improve the performance of learning algorithms over partially labeled data provided by SRT

Abstract:

Life in our country is getting more and more rush in recent years. Variety kind of instant foods come with the tide of trend. In this study, we use high nutritional contented fresh eggs to produce the dried egg soup by freeze-drying technology. We investigated the effects of different methods to blend eggs and adding modified potato starch, leavening agent, and moisture on the appearance and water absorption of flaky-dispersed egg soup after rehydrated. The results reveal that our experimental products were close to the fresh egg soup. This product can be used to diverse the choice of instant food and enhance the health of consumers. These hand-blended eggs could produce more ideal flaky- dispersed egg soup in the appearance and significantly higher(p<0.05)water absorption(295.0±7.5%)compared with juicer-blended(199.7±14.8%). Addition of modified potato starch into the boiled water can improve the appearance of flaky-dispersed egg soup after rehydrated and also increase the water absorption significantly (p<0.05)from 152.7±5.1% to 297.3±8.5%. The optimal amount of modified potato starch is 0.4% under boiled water. By adding 0.5% of baking powder into hand-blended eggs can also improve the appearance and have the highest water absorption(295.0±5.3%)of flaky-dispersed egg soup. The 5% addition of modified potato starch into hand-blended eggs increased the water absorption significantly(p<0.05). Moreover, combining water into the hand-blended eggs can improve the water absorption significantly(p<0.05) from 167.3±8.7% to 329.0±3.6%, and the rehydrated appearance can be improved by adding 50% of water into han-blended egg. On the 5 months storage test, the moisture(1.75∼1.80%), water activity(0.21∼0.22), water absorption(297.3∼300.6%), color and TBA value(4.60∼4.64 ppm) were no significant change during storage. Where only the VBN value show the trend of significantly increase(0.03∼0.96 mg%, p<0.05). Our results totally prove that this product could be used to diverse the choice of instant food and enhance the health of consumers.

Owing to the unceasing development and utilization of resources of the soil in Taiwan in the past, the plains and the vicinity of the mountainous regions have been wantonly destroyed in terms of biodiversity. Such a destruction of environment has been beyond the critical point. Widespread destructions of the natural environment confront counter attacks one after another in Taiwan by typhoons, earthquakes, floods, mudflows and landslides. Whenever there is a typhoon or a torrential rain, landslides and flood devastation are inevitable to the point of tragedy. Once the occurrence of ecological disasters take place, the period for recovery redoubles, let alone rehabilitation. On a comprehensive survey of the traditional aboriginal customs and taboo specifications, there are many concepts of ecological preservation and sustainable maintenance behind all those superstitions. The Bunun tribe is the most representative of a family of aboriginal ethnics. As a writer of the Bunun tribe, Husluma.Vava, through his writings, recurs the elegance of the culture of the Bunun tribe from the aboriginal perspectives. The focus of his writings is on the traditional culture and life, the beauty of forest landscapes, and on how people get along with nature.Culture festivals, rituals, and taboos reveal the Bunun tribe’s respect and care for nature. Husluma.Vava through his writings highlights the preservation of nature and ecological wisdom implied in the culture of the Bunun tribe. This thesis studies the literature of ecology of the aboriginal ethnic groups, with his masterpiece The Soul of Mt. Jade as the scope of discussion. The author undertakes to discuss the Bunun tribe’s mythology, traditional rituals and traditional values and so on, surveying the Bunan’s perspectives of ecology and ecological wisdom in the book of The Soul of Mt. Jade. The last part of the thesis compares the discrepancies of the change of the perspectives of ecology in the past and the present. It also discusses if the perpectives of ecology of the aborigines are worthy of our taking them as a good lesson which offers advice on the preservation of ecology in Taiwan.

Van, Heerden Michael Johann. "The evolution of human consciousness and the creation of the soul." Diss., 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/16311.

Abstract:
Revelation is God's Word addressed to the human being and so speaks of God in relation to the person and the world. Revelation can therefore only be fully understood, proclaimed and lived through an encounter with the world and its conceptions. To understand the evolution of human consciousness and the creation of the soul, we look to the sources of revelation (scripture and tradition) in dialogue with secular anthropology. The latter's paradigm of development and growth is not foreign to the former's understanding of conversion and growth in grace . The image of God, which characterises the human person, is shown to be an emergent likeness, which is created and drawn to its fullness by God. This accounts for Pius XII' s insistence that the soul is created immediately by God, who is responsible for the physical dynamics that bring forth consciousness and the personal dynamics that empower the human soul to develop.
