Exposure of fourth instar Aedes aegypti larvae to graded concentrations of the entomopathogenic cercariae of the digenean Plagiorchis elegans, induced fundamental changes in the partitioning of time among a number of major behavioural activities. In the absence of the parasite, swimming, breathing and feeding remained stable over time. Grooming was rarely observed. In the presence of cercariae, larvae increased grooming 26-fold. Populations (n = 25) of fourth instar Aedes aegypti were introduced into observation arenas that contained one of 5 types of substrates, and were sub-divided into 5 equal 1 cm horizontal zones. The larvae were videotaped to determine effects of food quality, food quantity, and nutrient deprivation on vertical distribution of larvae over time. As water depth increased, fourth instar larvae of the mosquito Aedes aegypti required progressively more time to reach the pupal stage, more individuals died or were disabled and the resulting adults were significantly smaller. Water depth affected females more severely than males and the developmental time of larvae was affected more than adult mass. I use Persistant Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PS InSAR) to measure interseismic strain accumulation across the Kunlun Fault, observe and model the postseismic signal associated with the Mw 7.8 2001 Kokoxili earthquake, and map strain in Western Turkey. PS InSAR selects pixels whose echo is dominated by a single scatterer in a series of interferograms (Hooper et al., 2004). To date most tectonic signals measured with InSAR have used Differential InSAR (DifSAR) rather than PS InSAR. I compare PS InSAR and DifSAR across the Kunlun Fault to obtain equivalent slip rates of 9.

This dissertation assesses the influence of residual interferometric noise on SBAS InSAR, utilises redundancy numbers to design a SBAS network and analyses the noise in the SBAS-derived deformation time-series. The simulation results indicated that a contradictory trend may be derived if a network with fewer interferograms is applied to low-magnitude deformation and a network with redundancy number between ~0.8 and ~0.9 is “optimal”. A white plus flicker model best describes the noise model of deformation time-series.
