Abstract This book tells the amazing story of significant improvement and recovery of 538 people once severely and chronically disabled with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. They were “hopeless cases” in state hospitals in Vermont and Maine. As part of two studies three decades-long funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the Vermonters received a pioneering rehabilitation program and the Mainers did not.
