Abstract:
RESEARCH INTO OCCASIONAL DAILIES IN POLAND AFTER 2008In recent years scholars have become increasingly drawn to publications documenting the life of society. Manifestations of this growing interest include an international conference devoted to such publications and organised in October 2004 by the Institute of Library and Information Science, University of Wrocław. The participants discussed the subject of occasional dailies, unique documents somewhere between non-periodical and serial publications. Numerous papers devoted to such publications were written by Małgorzata Korczyńska-Derkacz, who in 2008 presented the state of research into occasional dailies and carried out their multifaceted assessment as source materials, using the data from the Central Catalogue of Polish Periodicals. The present paper complements and continues the research carried out earlier. The topics most frequently tackled by scholars include those devoted to specific titles, historical periods occasional dailies in the inter-war period, places of publication Lviv, Kraków, publishing institution or milieu firefighters, students, scouts, ethnic groups Jewish dailies. Few scholars have tackled dailies from the point of view of their untypical editorial and formal features periodical or non-periodical publication and the related problems with their formal and substantive description. The fact that occasional dailies have been incorporated into the collections of digital libraries and the growing number of bibliographic compilations, including Volume 16 of the Polish Bibliography 1901–1939 devoted entirely to such publications, stimulate the interest of historians of the press, linguists, sociologists, ethnographers, culture scholars, historians of social movements, politics and economy, historians studying the customs and traditions of various ethnic and professional groups, localities and education. They appreciate such publications as a unique source of historical and factual information lists of people, tables and plates, photographs, statutes etc..

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine the sensitivity and specificity of detecting age-related macular degeneration (AMD) using portable optical coherence tomography (OCT) operated by nonexpert photographers on undilated patients. Methods: In this case-control study, 92 individuals were recruited from the glaucoma and retina clinics at the Wilmer Eye Institute (Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD). Using the portable iVue (Optovue, Inc, Fremont, CA) spectral-domain OCT (SD-OCT), 2 nonexpert photographers acquired retina map scans on undilated eyes of all participants. In total, 33 AMD eyes and 105 control eyes were evaluated and graded by ophthalmologists masked to the diagnoses. Results: Detection of AMD on the portable OCT by ophthalmologists exhibited sensitivities of 0.91 and 0.94 and specificities of 0.88 and 0.89, for graders 1 and 2, respectively. A strong intergrader agreement was observed (κ = 0.87). Conclusions: Nonexpert photographers can use a portable OCT on undilated eyes to acquire images for the detection of AMD. These findings present the potential utility of implementing a portable OCT in community screenings for earlier detection and treatment of disease.

On Monday 8 November, Sir John Gurdon was bustled into a meeting room at the Wellcome Trust to face a wall of TV cameras, journalists and photographers in a special press conference. Professor Gurdon, a former governor of the Trust after whom the Wellcome Trust–Cancer Research UK Gurdon Institute was named, had just been awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology for the discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed to become immature cells that are capable of developing into all tissues of the body. That same evening, the Wellcome Trust was able to announce a second prize-winner on its premises. Not for a Nobel Prize this time, but rather the inaugural winner of the Wellcome Trust Screenwriting Prize.

Abstract:
Memorialisation is experienced by victims of traumatic events as a form of justice. Victims? and society right to memory is mentioned in the Basque Law 4/2008 on recognition and protection of terrorism victims and the Spanish Law 29/2011 on recognition and integral protection of terrorism victims. Drawing from critical victimology and memory studies, this contribution aims at addressing current criticism by some victims? organizations with regard to memory public policies in this field. It particularly addresses ways of restoration through memory linked to the meaning of spaces of victimisation by examining the work of different photographers on making aspects of those victimisations visible for the contested purpose of remembering. First the conceptual framework on space, victimisation and memory is presented. Then it is related to the results of qualitative research by the Basque Institute of Criminology. At the end the micro, meso and macro aspects of local intervention proposals on restorative memory, including ethical remarks are commented.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine national sport organizations’ (NSOs’) social networks on Twitter to explore followership between users, thereby illuminating powerful and central actors in a digital environment. Using a stratified, convenience sample, followership between the ego (i.e., NSO) and its alters (i.e., stakeholders) were noted in square, one-mode sociomatrices for the Fencing Canada (381 × 381) and Luge Canada (1026 × 1026) networks on Twitter. Using social network analysis to analyze the data for network density, average ties, Bonacich beta centrality, and core–periphery structure, the results indicate fans, elite athletes, photographers, competing sport organizations, and local clubs are some of the key stakeholders with large amounts of power. Though salient users, such as sponsors and international sport federations, are also present in the network core, NSOs seem better able to increase visibility of their content by targeting smaller scale users. The findings imply managers may wish to reflect upon how these advantaged users can be incorporated into their social communication strategies and how scholarship should continue examining followership as well as content in online settings.

Abstract:
Rarely does a research library travel. In 1933, the year the Nazis came to power, the Warburg family in Hamburg negotiated with British sponsors to enable the Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek Warburg (Warburg Library for Cultural Study) to find safe haven in London. An initial three-year agreement was followed by a seven-year arrangement and, at the end of 1944, with Europe still at war, the Warburg Institute was incorporated into the University of London. The story of the first eleven years in London – highly productive years in which the staff sought to pursue their original mission while assimilating into British academe – reveals the working of complex politics and shows the degree to which, early on, the fate of the Warburg Institute was linked to that of the newly founded Courtauld Institute of Art.

Abstract:
Keeping aside discussions about theories of depiction of photography and the epistemic value of photography from the viewer’s perspective, I reconsider this techne from the photographers’ entire act of photographing. It presents the quest of the possibility to regain the world by the art of photography, especially in a situation where human consciousness of the living environment is overwhelmed by the photographic effects. The nature of the current technological environment—while disguising the manifestation of pure humanity, in the sense that it is the externalization of technology due to human nature—is completely destructive. Today, trying to save or regenerate philosophy should be nothing more than seeking a way for human beings to refuse being incorporated as an automaton in an endless track of automated reproduction processes. As one of those who wish to find a way to reconstruct the relationship between humans and nature or to reveal that human existence can only be established in such correlation, I seek a way of breathing human freedom, momentarily disputing this automated living and social environment. In other words, to regain or to play the art of photography, to unsettle what usually works as concrete support for the cognitive transformation making us unconsciously think of the technological environment as something inevitable and natural. It would be presenting a temporary retreat and a more positive way forward.

Abstract:
Individuals seek complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for a variety of health conditions, and yoga is a popular CAM modality. Over the past few decades, yoga has become incorporated into hundreds of healthcare facilities, most commonly in large university medical centers. While research has shown yoga to be effective in reducing symptoms and improving outcomes in chronic health conditions, most patients seek yoga therapy on their own, as few primary care practitioners have incorporated yoga therapy into their practices. The purpose of this article is to describe the efforts of the Casey Health Institute to incorporate yoga therapy into their primary care integrative medicine center. At Casey Health, a full-time Clinical Yoga Specialist works alongside the physicians, nurses, and CAM providers in delivering care to a wide variety of patients. The majority of referrals to yoga therapy have been for pain-related musculoskeletal conditions, as well as hypertension, headaches, anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances. Most patients attend weekly 60-minute individual sessions, and the Clinical Yoga Specialist stays in touch with the patient between appointments via telephone and email. T h e Clinical Yoga Specialist has become an integral part of Casey Health, participating in collaborative medical appointments in which two CAM practitioners provide simultaneous treatments to a patient. She also participates in the clinic's ongoing weight loss program. The Clinical Yoga Specialist spends one morning each week “floating” in the clinic, when she is on-call to the practitioners to assist in treatment and/or to introduce a yoga therapy experience to the patients. These brief interventions introduce the patients to the therapeutic benefits of yoga, while simultaneously demonstrating yoga's effectiveness to the healthcare providers. Casey Health has developed a unique teacher training program whose faculty includes senior Iyengar yoga teachers as well as physicians and CAM practitioners. Casey Health is incorporating clinical outcomes into their electronic medical record that can be used internally to assess comparable effectiveness and cost effectiveness of the different treatment modalities such as yoga therapy, providing evidence that eventually may lead to yoga therapy becoming an accepted treatment that is eligible for insurance reimbursement.

Abstract The Departments of Higher Education that have incorporated postgraduate courses in their curriculum must acquire provision and adaptability mechanisms so that the courses can correspond to the current and future needs of their students. Important factors, such as many disadvantages that the extremely competitive postgraduate courses abroad face, compared to the postgraduate courses in Greece, lead the potential students to choose the Greek ones. This research paper aims to find the right methodology for the postgraduate courses to attract more students. Specifically the research will be conducted through questionnaires, using Likert method and SPSS system for the processing of data. Our goal is to collect primary data from active postgraduate students of the Technological Educational Institute of Thessaly. The results of the research will serve as useful tools for the administrative members of both Higher Education Universities and Technological Education Institutes, as well for the teachers, since they can showcase the Greek postgraduate courses in comparison to the ones abroad.

In adapting to these shifts, SENSE, a university-based institute in the United States, has seen notable changes in power relations, forms of legitimation, and social structures. This article recognizes and investigates these changes through an interpretative investigation of four common media objects incorporated into research practice at the institute: collaboration wikis, telephones, computer simulations, and government reports. In doing so, this article adopts an approach from media studies through which hard-to-see changes in social and cultural life can be investigated by observing media objects in research practice. Ultimately, this article tells the story of a research organization and an entire discipline working to adapt to a rapidly changing scientific landscape.

Abstract:
Abstract. Since many tourists share the photos they take on social media channels, large collections of tourist attraction photos are easily accessible online. Recent research has dealt with identifying popular places from these photos, as well as computing city tourism routes based on these photo collections. Although current approaches show great potential, many tourism attractions suffer from being overrun by tourists, not least because many tourists are aware of only a few tourism hot spots that are trending. In the worst case, automatic city route recommendations based on social media photos will intensify this issue and disappoint tourists who seek individual experiences. In the best case, however, if individual preferences are appropriately incorporated into the route planning algorithm, more personalized route recommendations will be achieved. In this paper, we suggest distinguishing two different types of photo contributors, namely: first-time visitors who are usually tourists who "follow the crowd" (e.g., to visit the top tourist attractions), and repeated visitors who are usually locals who "don’t follow the crowd" (e.g., to visit photogenic yet less well-known places). This categorization allows the user to decide how to trade the one objective off against the other. We present a novel method based on a classification of photographers into locals and tourists, and show how to incorporate this information into an algorithmic routing framework based on the Orienteering Problem approach. In detailed experiments we analyze how choosing the parameter that models the trade-off between both objectives influences the optimal route found by the algorithm, designed to serve the user’s travel objective and preferences in terms of visited attraction types.

This paper focuses on aligning engineering design with accreditation requirements in engineering education. To be an accredited curriculum, education programs must incorporate graduate attributes required by program accrediting professional bodies. Graduate attributes are the required benchmarks for students to attain their specific qualities and abilities within a higher education institute. Most higher education institutions identify a list of expected graduate attributes or outcomes that are incorporated in their educational programs to be accredited by an accrediting professional body such as Engineers Australia (EA), Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) in the United States, and the European Accreditation of Engineering Programs (EUR-ACE) in Europe. This paper evaluates the program educational objectives, student outcomes, assessment methods and evaluation of different undergraduate engineering programs. It assesses how engineering design is practiced and incorporated as an important element of the graduate attributes through project oriented design based learning curriculum aligned with professional accreditation requirements.

Abstract:
Worldwide, the lack of resolution of the current pharmaceutical arsenal to heal some diseases, including chronic kidney disease, opens space for further research in the field of health. Technological horizons monitoring actions are highlighted in the tracking of relevant technologies to solve certain health issues that are still considered incurable. In this perspective, it is proposed in this study to monitor technological horizons on chronic kidney disease to investigate whether any of the technologies found is incorporated into SUS, with effective use and social impact. For this purpose, a survey was conducted on the International Platform for Clinical Trials Records (ICTRP) of WHO, National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) and patent database linked to the ORBIT intelligence system. Abstract:
The widespread use of building integrated photovoltaics appears likely as a result of the continuing decline in photovoltaic manufacturing costs, the relative ease in which photovoltaics can be incorporated within the building envelope, and the fact that buildings account for over 40% of the U.S. energy consumption. However, designers, architects, installers, and consumers need more information and analysis tools in order to judge the merits of building-integrated solar photovoltaic products. In an effort to add to the knowledge base, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has undertaken a multiple-year project to collect high quality experimental performance data. The data will be used to validate computer models for building integrated photovoltaics and, where necessary, to develop algorithms that may be incorporated within these models. This paper describes the facilities that have been constructed to assist in this effort. The facilities include a mobile tracking photovoltaic test facility, a building integrated photovoltaic test bed, an outdoor aging rack, and a meteorological station.

Abstract:
This year, the staff of the Federal Scientific Vegetable Center (FSVC) celebrates their 100th anniversary. Prof. S. I. Zhegalov was the recognized founder of the institution, which was reorganized from Gribovo Vegetable Experimental Station. Its team started with 14 employees, and the experimental crop area was slightly less than 4 hectares. In a short period of time (1920 to 1927), 74 cultivars of the most popular vegetable crops and a number of flower crop varieties were developed and improved. The second period of the Station’s development (1937 to 1966) was associated with the name of Acad. E. I. Ushakova. During this period, a pleiad of talented scientific plant breeders emerged and thrived: A. V. Alpatyev, S. P. Agapova, E. M. Popova, A. D. Plinka, Yu. A. Kobyakova, and others. In 1971, Gribovo Experimental Station was transformed into the All-Union Scientific Research Institute for Breeding and Seed Production of Vegetable Crops (VNIISSOK). The Institute was headed by Acad. P. F. Sokol. Under his leadership, capacity building and logistic support of the Institute were promoted: new facilities were built, and the experimental production network was expanded. Despite the difficulties associated with the reorganization and the financial and political situation in the country in 1992–2017, the staff achieved significant results during the years of the directorship by Acad. V. F. Pivovarov. New cultivars were developed to meet the demand; they occupied more than 50% of the crop area under vegetables across the country. Each year, the Institute produced 200–300 tons of elite and cultivar seeds. In 2017, the Institute was merged into the Federal Scientific Vege table Center as the keystone element. The Center also incorporated the All-Russian Research Institute of Vegetable Production and seven experiment stations throughout the Russian Federation. The Institute has been successfully cooperating with the N.I. Vavilov Institute of Plant Genetic Resources (VIR) for many years, exchanging germplasm materials and experience, and jointly developing vegetable cultivars.

Abstract:
Making organizations aware of their carbon footprint (CF) and proposing measures to reduce it are important segments of climate change mitigation. As a part of this process, an enhanced Bilan Carbone model with incorporated country-specific greenhouse gas (GHG) emission factors was applied for CF calculations of three organizations (Agency, Faculty, and Institute). The model, fully in line with international CF calculation standards, can be applied to calculate the CF of any organization on the global level. The paper provides a comparative assessment of CFs of considered organizations and preconditions for a reliable comparison. The calculated CFs values for 2017 were 513.4 t CO2 e for the Agency, 4254.7 t CO2 e for the Faculty, and 477.0 t CO2 e for the Institute. Comparing specific CF, the Faculty had the highest value per employee (9.4 t CO2 e/employee) and the lowest value per heated area (131 kg CO2 e/m2), followed by the Institute (5.4 t CO2 e/employee and 222 kg CO2 e/m2) and the Agency (4.5 t CO2 e/employee and 294 kg CO2 e/m2). Using the enhanced Bilan Carbone model, adapted to national conditions, could lead to the harmonization of the organizations’ CF calculation and enable the identification of significant emission sources. This will facilitate the definition of GHG reduction targets and the identification of mitigation measures for achieving the targets, as presented in the example of the Institute.

Abstract In the contemporary family law, parents are obliged to arrange the joined implementation of the parenting rights either by their own will or through the help of their lawyers and/or mediators. This institute of mutual agreement is known as joined custody or joined implementation of the parenting right after the divorce of the marriage. This institute makes it possible for parents who live separately to arrange their custody rights in the most convenient way for the child. With a joined custody agreement, the parents accept the obligation to implement all the rights and duties that constitute the parenting right even in case of their separation. Through not dividing their rights from their obligations and with the aim of being closer to the needs of the child, the institute of joined custody helps avoid the feelings of hostility and disagreement in regard to the judicial decision which gives permanent custody to one of the parents. This institute is incorporated in the family law of many countries (Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, UK, France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Hungary, Czech Republic, USA and Australia). This article aims to emphasize the need to introduce in the family law of RM an explicit provision for joined and responsible custody after the divorce in order to achieve the best interest of the child. There is a joined initiative of parents who live separately from their children who request the amendment of the Family Law of RM in this direction.

ABSTRACTSince its establishment, Institute of Medicine (IOM) has been pursuing Community Oriented MedicalEducation (COME) in training medical graduates in the country. The community orientation of the MBBSprogram of IOM is achieved through community based learning divided into different experiences like fieldbased community diagnosis, concurrent field with families with sick members, district hospital managementthrough posting in the district hospitals. The aim of this article is to review the organization of the COMEat IOM, identify the strengths and weaknesses of this approach and suggest measures for improvement. Areview of the educational activities related to community based learning experiences was done, and focusgroup discussions were carried out among the current and the past students. Besides these two activities, literature was searched and concerned authorities were informally interviewed to find out if there has beenany consensus regarding the effectiveness and desirability of this approach. The review revealed that theprogram at IOM has partially incorporated the concepts of COME in its teaching learning activities. Studentsand graduates of the program tend to like the program and value its contribution in their education.International bodies and educational experts in the country view this approach with great favour. There arecertain areas, particularly in orientation of the students, supervision and logistic support that needimprovement. In conclusion, COME though not formally evaluated so far, seems to have made a stronginfluence on the education of physicians in Nepal. It needs continuous support and strengthening in order toproduce doctors with social relevance in future as well.Key Words: Medical Education, Community Oriented, Evaluation, Nepal.

Silicon carbide is currently used as a structural material for heat exchanger tubes and related applications because of its excellent thermal properties and oxidation resistance. Silicon carbide suffers corrosion degradation, however, in the aggressive furnace environments of industrial processes for aluminum remelting, advanced glass melting, and waste incineration. Adherent ceramic oxide coatings developed at Solar Turbines Incorporated, with the support of the Gas Research Institute, have been shown to afford corrosion protection to silicon carbide in a simulated aluminum remelt furnace environment as well as in laboratory-type corrosion testing. The coatings are also protective to silicon carbide-based ceramic matrix composites.

Situating Beckett's writing in relation to anthropological accounts of Ireland, this article examines how his postcolonial parody of ethnographic discourse serves to critique the notion of cultural authenticity. Since the late nineteenth-century anthropological representations, from A.C. Haddon's studies for The Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland to Conrad Arensberg's ethnographies of western Ireland, had incorporated native culture into a fundamentally primitivist perspective. In , however, Beckett revises this perspective to offer overtly constructed images of authentic Irishness, which refuse the hegemonic modes of cultural identification and epistemological mastery implicit in more conventional anthropological representations of Ireland.

AbstractExperimental depth distributions of the concentration of implanted xenon ions depending on their charge state and irradiation energy are presented. Xenon ions in charge states q = 1–20 and energies in the range from 50 to 400 keV are incorporated into single-crystal silicon. Irradiation is performed in the direction not coinciding with the crystallographic axes of the crystal to avoid the channeling effect. The ion fluence varies in the range of 5 × (10^14–10^15) ion/cm^2. The irradiation by singly charged ions and investigation of the samples by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy is performed using an HVEE acceleration complex at Moscow State University. Multiply charged ions are implanted using a FAMA acceleration complex at the Vinća Institute of Nuclear Sciences. The depth distribution profiles of the incorporated ions are found using Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy. Experimental results are correlated with computer calculations. It is shown that the average projective path of multiply charged ions in most cases is shorter when compared with the average projected path of singly charged ions and the results of computer modeling.

Abstract:
Background: Clearly the benefits of a treatment must not be outweighed by the adverse effects. If researchers fail to incorporate adverse effects adequately in models, this could limit the validity of the results obtained. In the worst case, interventions that are cost-effective may be shown not to be. The aim of this research was to review current practice when incorporating adverse effects in economic models. Methods: A survey of HTA reports commissioned by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment programme, published between 2004 and 2007 was conducted. All reports which investigated the clinical and cost-effectiveness of a health technology using a systematic review and an economic model framework were included. Results: A total of eighty reports met the inclusion criteria. Of the models including adverse effects (43/80), 67 percent used a clinical adverse effects parameter, 79 percent a cost of adverse effects parameter, 86 percent used one of these, and 60 percent used both. Of the thirty-seven models that did not include adverse effects, eighteen justified this omission, most commonly lack of data; nineteen appeared to make no explicit consideration of adverse effects in the model. Conclusions: In many cases, poor reporting made it difficult to ascertain if there had been any consideration of adverse effects. We suggest that the findings of this survey support a call for much clearer and explicit reporting of adverse effects, or their exclusion, in decision models and for explicit recognition in future guidelines that “all relevant outcomes” should include some consideration of adverse events.

Abstract:
A phospholipid drug delivery nanosystem with particle size up to 30 nm elaborated at the Institute of Biomedical Chemistry has been used earlier for incorporation of doxorubicin (Doxolip). This system demonstrated higher antitumor effect in vivo as compared with free doxorubicin. In this study the effect of this nanosystem containing doxorubicin on HepG2 cell proteome has been investigated. Cells were incubated in a medium containing phospholipid nanoparticles (0.5 mg/ml doxorubicin, 10 mg/mL phosphatidylcholine). After incubation for 48 h their survival represented 10% as compared with untreated cells. Cell proteins were analyzed by quantitative two-dimensional gel electrophoresis followed by identification of differentially expressed proteins with MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. The phospholipid transport nanosystem itself insignificantly influenced the cell proteome thus confirming previous data on its safety. Doxorubicin, as both free substance and Doxolip (i.e. included into phospholipid nanoparticles) induced changes in expression of 28 proteins. Among these proteins only four of them demonstrated different in response to the effect of the free drug substance and Doxolip. Doxolip exhibited a more pronounced effect on expression of certain proteins; the latter indirectly implies increased penetration of the drug substance (included into nanoparticles) into the tumor cells. Increased antitumor activity of doxorubicin included into phospholipid nanoparticles may be associated with more active increase of specific protein expression.

Abstract:
In this work, air freshening spongey 3D nanofibrous membrane of nylon-6 (N6) is fabricated via electrospinning process. Viscous N6 solution dissolved in formic acid/acetic acid solvent system was allowed for electrospinning to obtain 2D membrane. As-fabricated 2D membrane is converted into 3D one by using gas foaming technique. Lemon grass essential oil as a fragrance was incorporated through 2D and 3D porous membrane by evaporating essential oil at 60°C for 5 hours. The morphology of different membranes was examined from FE-SEM images which showed that 3D membrane is far porous than 2D one. The control fragrance release from the 3D spongy membrane was evaluated from the weight loss of oil-loaded membrane for 60 days which showed that the 3D membrane had more oil uptake and the controlled release of oil over the studied time. FT-IR spectra of oil-incorporated 3D membrane at different interval of times indicated the presence of fragrance even after the 60 days. The result showed that as-fabricated sponge 3D membrane may be a potential candidate for the future air freshening materials.Journal of the Institute of Engineering, 2018, 14(1): 14-21

Abstract:
Purpose Substantial evidence suggests that tobacco use has adverse effects on cancer treatment outcomes; however, routine assessment of tobacco use has not been fully incorporated into standard clinical oncology practice. The purpose of this study was to evaluate tobacco use assessment in patients enrolled onto actively accruing cancer clinical trials. Methods Protocols and forms for 155 actively accruing trials in the National Cancer Institute's (NCI's) Clinical Trials Cooperative Group Program were evaluated for tobacco use assessment at enrollment and follow-up by using a structured coding instrument. Results Of the 155 clinical trials reviewed, 45 (29%) assessed any form of tobacco use at enrollment, but only 34 (21.9%) assessed current cigarette use. Only seven trials (4.5%) assessed any form of tobacco use during follow-up. Secondhand smoke exposure was captured in 2.6% of trials at enrollment and 0.6% during follow-up. None of the trials assessed nicotine dependence or interest in quitting at any point during enrollment or treatment. Tobacco status assessment was higher in lung/head and neck trials as well as phase III trials, but there was no difference according to year of starting accrual or cooperative group. Conclusion Most actively accruing cooperative group clinical trials do not assess tobacco use, and there is no observable trend in improvement over the past 8 years. Failure to incorporate standardized tobacco assessments into NCI-funded Cooperative Group Clinical Trials will limit the ability to provide evidence-based cessation support and will limit the ability to accurately understand the precise effect of tobacco use on cancer treatment outcomes.

Abstract:
A key objective of the Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) program is to reduce the potential for produce to become contaminated with microbial pathogens, such as through irrigation water. Without microbial standards, however, it is impractical to decide whether there is a need to disinfect, a need to institute watershed protection programs, or a need to institute post-harvest disinfection regimes. To develop such standards, quantitative microbial risk assessments can be performed using pathogen monitoring data for produce. This paper presents an approach which can be used towards the application of a risk assessment framework to developing microbial standards for fresh produce. Risks of infection are estimated using typical monitoring data of Salmonella detected on carrots and assuming various scenarios of the likelihood of an individual consuming a contaminated serving of carrots in a given year. Estimated annual risks of infection range from 2.20 × 10−5 to 2.16 × 10−3, assuming 1% and 100% of an individual's carrot servings are contaminated, respectively. In addition, critical factors are identified which need to be incorporated in such a risk assessment approach as well as their impact on risk estimates to provide growers with benchmarks which may be targeted to reduce health risks.

Abstract:
The aim of the present study was to estimate the wall effect of the self-made spherical graphite-walled cavity chamber with the Monte Carlo method for establishing the air-kerma primary standard of high-dose-rate (HDR)192Ir brachytherapy sources at the Institute of Nuclear Energy Research (INER, Taiwan). The Monte Carlo method established in this paper was also employed to respectively simulate wall correction factors of the192Ir air-kerma standard chambers used at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST, USA) and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL, UK) for comparisons and verification. The chamber wall correction calculation results will be incorporated into INER's HDR192Ir primary standard in the future. For the brachytherapy treatment in the esophagus or in the bronchi, the position of the isotope may have displacement in the cavity. Thus the delivered dose would differ from the prescribed dose in the treatment plan. We also tried assessing dose distribution due to the position displacement of HDR192Ir brachytherapy source in a phantom with a central cavity by the Monte Carlo method. The calculated results could offer a clinical reference for the brachytherapy within the human organs with cavity.
