Abstract:
Instructional Design (ID) is a procedure for developing an educational or training programme, curricula, or courses sequentially and authentically (Branch & Merrill, 2011). This procedure enables instructors to create instructions, which involves the “systematic planning of instruction” (Smith & Ragan, 2005, p. 8), ranging from instructional analysis to evaluation (Mager, 1984). Thus, ID can be referred to as a “systematic and reflective process of translating principles of learning and instruction into plans for instructional materials, activities, information resources, and evaluation” (Smith & Ragan, 2005, p. 4). As such, taken as a framework, ID provides the process to create instructions based on the necessity of a teaching and learning environment. Thus, ID can be defined as a process to develop directions and specifications using learning and instructional theory to ensure the quality of instruction.

Abstract:
IN 1996, WE WERE ASKED TO EVALUATE A new set of mathematics instructional materials for the middle school classroom. The instructional unit included a wide assortment of materials, so we decided to begin with some explicit criteria on which to base our evaluation. We turned to several sources, including the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and local school districts, seeking evaluation guidelines that were in the spirit of the NCTM's Standards documents (1989, 1991, 1995).

Abstract:
The effectiveness of any teacher at all levels of education depends on the quality of the inputs, process, and resources within a given educational system. Primary instruction is designed to provide functional literacy and skills of verbal communication, mathematical accuracy, social studies, science, and creative studies. The achievement of this objective depends on the application of the systematic principles of the design of appropriate instructional system components for primary instruction. The materials-first rational model of instructional system development has been advocated. This model is based on the intuitive and opportunity models of instructional design and development.

Abstract:
Instructional materials are paramount in effecting language instruction. However, there are contextual issues related to the use and selection of these materials. This study focused on authentic language instructional materials in public secondary schools in the Philippines. This study employed a mixed-methods research approach. This study concludes that internet-based authentic language instructional materials are inadequate in language instruction, showing limitations on the capacity of the school and the language teachers to provide adequate internet-based materials; there are concerns about using authentic language instructional materials that hinder learners' authentic response and comprehension to authentic language instructional materials, and there were measures to overcome the concerns which could develop authentic language instructional materials into the ideal learning materials. It is recommended that language teachers select resources according to the learners' unique requirements, proficiency levels, cultural contexts, and educational contexts. The participation of learners in the selection process and activity design is crucial to ensure the materials are engaging and culturally pertinent. To effectively address the challenges associated with using these resources, a collaborative approach is recommended, involving teachers, students, and other stakeholders in implementing the suggested solutions.

Abstract:
ESL classroom implements the use of instructional materials to support instruction in classroom. Instructional material is defined as anything which is deliberately used to increase the learners’ knowledge and/or experience of the language (Tomlinson, 2011). Textbook, video, newspaper can be used as materials in the English instruction. This research aims to evaluate the instructional material for Peer Assisted Learning Program (PALP) based on Mukundan’s categorization in the form of English Language Teaching Textbook Evaluation Checklist (ELT-TEC) (2013) and to find whether the material is useful or not the material for PALP. Peer Assisted Learning Program (PALP) is a peer tutoring program initiated by the English Education Department to encourage the students to speak English fluently and to perform better. The data of this descriptive quantitative research are taken from the instructional material for PALP and these are classified based on the categorization checklist of Mukundan’s English Language Teaching Textbook Evaluation Checklist (ELT-TEC). The total score will be the consideration of the materials’ usefulness. Based on the analysis, it is found that the instructional material for PALP is on the moderate usefulness. This finding can give a significant contribution the PALP itself.

Abstract:
The goal of my research would be to describe the experiences of teachers on digital innovations. Experiential pieces of evidence revealed that educational leadership goes through a broad-spectrum a dearth of logical academic inquiry on matters on teachers’ cyber aptitude. Thus, my phenomenological study revealed the experiences of the 11 elementary school teachers in the Division of Davao Occidental using the purposive sampling technique. Teachers exposed that they were using the digital innovations they considered best to improve classroom instructions: instructional videos, localized instructional materials in PowerPoint presentation, and computerized worksheets and reading materials. These were inspired by the teachers’ educational technology pursuits and their ideal picture of an instructional leader as globally competitive with the 21st Century skills. To deal with the fast advancing technologies, teachers were with the school community managing resources and delivering instructions with the integration of technology resulting in productive and all-inclusive education; where learners endured learning. This development served as a paradigm shift in teaching as it demanded teachers to cope with the constantly changing world to attain job satisfaction. In the entirety, digital innovations through creating technology-based instruction and digital innovations implementation in the school, as well as, facilitating ICT integration in teaching and learning as part of the curriculum instruction unraveled the need of the 21st Century learners.

Payne, Kenneth L. "Financing instructional materials in Indiana public school corporations." Virtual Press, 1987. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/505144.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to analyze current procedures utilized for financing textbooks and related instructional materials by Indiana public school corporations and public school corporations in selected states. Respective practices were examined in order to determine feasible methods/alternatives for Indiana school corporations to use in overcoming the contemporary financial and administrative dilemma which existed in the 1985-86 school year.A descriptive questionnaire was developed from a review of literature and with the assistance of colleagues. Data obtained by the instrument were analyzed using frequency tabulations and percentages. Based on information gained from the study and data collected in superintendents in Indiana, solutions to financing instructional materials for Indiana school corporations were determined.Data collected supported the following conclusions: 1. Public school corporations in Indiana charge fees for textbooks and related instructional materials and are experiencing difficulties in collecting textbook rental and related fees from parents or guardians of school children.2. The use of small claims court for recovering fees is not an effective method for most public school corporations in Indiana.3. Township trustees and/or county councils should pay for textbooks and instructional materials of students whose parents or guardians are declared by the courts to be indigent.4. The current formula for determining textbook rental rates is satisfactory.5. Legislation should be adopted to permit public school corporations to increase revenue in order to finance textbooks and related instructional materials.6. To be in concert with other states in the United States and more specifically within the Great Lakes Region, public school students should be supplied textbooks and related instructional materials without charge.7. The location and size of school corporations have implications to problems existing in public school corporations when administering textbook rental programs.8. Lack of additional finance has restricted public school corporations in implementing new programs to be funded by the general fund budget.9. Based on the average rankings of ten regions, public school corporations in Regions I, II, and VI encountered the greatest difficulty in financing textbooks and related instructional materials. Public school corporations have the least problems in supplying textbooks to school students.10. Based on the average rankings of six enrollment groups, public school corporations in the smallest three groups had the greatest success in financing textbooks and related instructional materials for students.11. Additional costs for school corporations are incurred when interest is paid to publishers for overdue accounts or for installment payment programs.12. School corporations with deficit balances or significantly decreasing balances in textbook rental accounts are in. need of assistance in collecting outstanding fees from constituents and/or means of generating sufficient revenue to account for required textbooks and related instructional materials for students.

Umino, Tae. "Foreign language learning with self-instructional television materials : an exploratory study." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2002. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10020387/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates second language (L2) learning with selfinstructional television (SITV) materials. It aims to explore: (1) how SITV materials can contribute to L2 learning; (2) the process of self-instruction involved in the use of SITV materials; and (3) a new methodological approach for investigating the use of SITV materials. The initial literature review considers self-instruction in general and learning involving self-instructional broadcast materials in particular, providing details also of two preliminary studies of Japanese students carried out by the author. The main study was designed to investigate, in an exploratory-interpretive fashion, the process whereby seven British adult learners studied Japanese using SITV materials over a fourteen-month period consisting of four phases. Phase 1 revealed features of SITV materials learners find salient while viewing SITV lessons. It was also found that the learners' focus shifted from surface features of the materials to content and onto their own learning process, and that this development accompanied changes in the way they studied with the materials. This led me to carry out a second literature review, on learner strategies. The research in Phase 2 focussed on learners' strategy use while viewing SITV lessons, revealing the types of strategies learners use as well as variability in strategy use according to the lesson, with implications for strategy research more generally. In Phases 3 and 4, which were motivated by the learners themselves, I had the chance to observe what they would do if left on their own. In Phase 4, learners formed a semi-autonomous learning group and together invented creative activities of their own to fulfill their needs and shared strategies to overcome their common problems. On the basis of these findings, the thesis concludes with an overall discussion of the role of SITV materials in L2 learning, the process of materialscentred self-instruction, and issues of research methodology, as well as pedagogical and methodological implications. Directions for future research are also suggested.

Abstract:
Access to books is key to learning to read and sustaining a love of reading. Yet many low- and middle-income countries struggle to provide their students with reading materials of sufficient quality and quantity. Since 2008, RTI International has provided technical assistance in early reading assessment and instruction to ministries of education in dozens of low- and middle-income countries. The central objective of many of these programs has been to improve learning outcomes—in particular, reading—for students in the early grades of primary school. Under these programs, RTI has partnered with ministry staff to produce and distribute evidence-based instructional materials at a regional or national scale, in quantities that increase the likelihood that children will have ample opportunities to practice reading skills, and at a cost that can be sustained in the long term by the education system. In this paper, we seek to capture the practices RTI has developed and refined over the last decade, particularly in response to the challenges inherent in contexts with high linguistic diversity and low operational capacity for producing and distributing instructional materials. These practices constitute our approach to developing and producing instructional materials for early grade literacy. We also touch upon effective planning for printing and distribution procurement, but we do not consider the printing and distribution processes in depth in this paper. We expect this volume will be useful for donors, policymakers, and practitioners interested in improving access to cost-effective, high-quality teaching and learning materials for the early grades.

Abstract:
This Instructional Unit is part of a set of pilot instructional and assessment materials developed by NCEP for research purposes. NCEP's NSF-funded study investigated whether undergraduate students can improve their data analysis, critical thinking, and oral communication skills in a semester. The answer is yes! The materials here are presented as they were used in the study, but they also have been updated and adapted for those interested in using them in their own classroom. For the updated versions, please click on the "Lessons in Conservation: Student Learning Issue" in the Network Picks on the home page or visit ncep.amnh.org/linc. If you are interested in learning more about this project, please contact us at ncep@amnh.org.

Abstract:
The Surveys of Enacted Curriculum (SEC) approach is used to analyse and report on the academic content embedded in education instructional components such as curriculum standards, assessments, and teachers' classroom instruction. Through a partnership between the RISE Programme and the Center for Curriculum Analysis, the approach has been used to analyse educational alignment in low- and middle-income country education systems, including in Kenya, Nepal, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda. The SEC approach has many applications including content and alignment analysis for curriculum standards, assessments, and instructional materials; curriculum reform design and implementation support; and teacher professional development and support. This document provides a comprehensive toolkit for conducting an SEC study in LMICs. Following the introduction and background, Section 2 gives an overview of the SEC approach and provides a brief description of sequential steps involved in conducting an SEC study: (i) generating data; (ii) inputting data; (iii) processing and analysing data; and (iv) interpretating results. Section 3 then gives detailed, step-by-step instructions for implementing an SEC study. Section 4 shares lessons learned from conducting SEC studies in LMICs. The document then closes with an Appendix that provides a detailed overview of the SEC tools and other resources provided with this toolkit. These appendices [.zip] are available for download.
