Low-voltage power line carrier (PLC) communication has received wide attention. However, testing standards are not well defined for PLC communication yet, and there are no professional, systematic and comprehensive detection indicators to measure and evaluate the quality of PLC communication. This paper proposed a low-voltage power line carrier communication evaluation system based on Virtual Instrument (VI). Simulation results revealed that the proposed system could precisely reflect the quality of the PLC communication.

AbstractIn the modern day’s Oral and Maxillofacial surgical practice, complex surgical and aesthetical procedures are being carried out associated with an increased risk of infectious complications. Therefore, to ensure better outcomes of the surgical procedures, it is absolutely necessary that appropriate measures must be taken to decrease the incidence of associated infections. The practices to be carried out for infection control include proper scrubbing procedures for both patient and the operator, specific protocols to be followed by the operating personnel at the time of procedures, proper handling of the instruments and maintaining an aseptic environment throughout the procedure. The main aim of this chapter is to provide information on the preoperative, operative and post-operative protocols that should be adhered to improve the safety of the patients undergoing surgical procedures.

This is an essay about rust. Iron usually plays the part of strength, stubbornness, and impenetrability, but rust registers the dimension of time in the material, reminding us that it always carries the potential for its own decomposition. While great expense is incurred to stave off iron’s oxidization, we read the uselessness that rust precipitates as an interruption of the instrumental logics that sustain racial capitalism. Looking to the rusted ring that became Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven’s Enduring Ornament (1913), we consider how the discarded and defunctionalized lend themselves to ornamental redeployment. The essay then turns to works by the contemporary American artists David Hammons and Andrea Fraser, both of which transform Richard Serra’s rusty steel sculptures into a backdrop for fleeting gestures of impromptu reclamation. Attending to questions of susceptibility and monumental weathering, these reflections look to rusty leakages that play out the impossibility of refusing the environment. Rust, we suggest, is a material archive of exposure that does not keep itself, but flakes apart and seeps away.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter introduces a study carried out in the context of the transformation of the Lithuanian education system towards inclusive education, with the aim of revealing the educational factors that contribute to students becoming knowledgeable and resourceful expert learners in the universal design for learning (UDL) approach. The UDL framework was chosen as a systematic reasoning instrument for the teacher and the school, aiding in achieving the development of expert learner qualities in every student in the general education context and ensuring the quality of inclusive education. The chapter briefly introduces the theoretical approach of the research, the context of Lithuanian education and the school where the research took place, which is relevant for the interpretation of the results, and other important methodological aspects. The research data show that applying the UDL approach helped the teachers to modify the educational process in order to develop in students the qualities of knowledgeable and resourceful expert learners. The results, presented in a structured manner in the chapter, reveal the process and contributing educational factors to students’ becoming actively perceiving, self-directed, knowledge-creating and co-creating learners and learners constructing their own deep comprehension. The research data reveal the methods used by the teachers to recognise and overcome the barriers in cultivating these qualities in their students. We also identified the emerging changes in teachers’ dispositions when applying the UDL approach and designing lessons aimed at promoting the qualities of knowledgeable and resourceful expert learners.

Full text
Abstract:
In the domain of light emissions, quantum mechanics has been an immensely successful guiding tool for us. In the propagation of light and optical instrument design, Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral (HFDI) (or its advanced versions) and Maxwell’s wave equation are continuing to be the essential guiding tools for optical scientists and engineers. In fact, most branches of optical science and engineering, like optical instrument design, image processing, Fourier optics, Holography, etc., cannot exist without using the foundational postulates behind the Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral. Further, the field of structured light is also growing where phases and the state of polarizations are manipulated usually with suitable classical macro-devices to create wave fronts that restructured through light-matter interactions through these devices. Mathematical modeling of generating such complex wave fronts generally follows classical concepts and classical macro tools of physical optics. Some of these complex light beams can impart mechanical angular momentum and spin-like properties to material particles inserted inside these structured beams because of their electromagnetic dipolar properties and/or structural anisotropy. Does that mean these newly structured beams have acquired new quantum properties without being generated through quantum devices and quantum transitions? In this chapter, we bridge the classical and quantum formalism by defining a hybrid photon (HP). HP is a quantum of energy, hν, at the initial moment of emission. It then immediately evolves into a classical time-finite wave packet, still transporting the original energy, hν, with a classical carrier frequency ν (oscillation of the E-vector). This chapter will raise enquiring questions whether all these observed “quantum-like” behaviors are manifestations of the joint properties of interacting material particles with classical EM waves or are causal implications of the existence of propagation of “indivisible light quanta” with exotic properties like spin, angular momentum, etc.

Full text
Abstract:
Measurements of atmospheric properties become progressively more difficult with altitude above the surface of the earth, and even surface measurements are difficult over the oceans. First balloons, then airplanes and rockets, were used to carry instruments aloft to make in-situ measurements. Now remote sensors, both ground-based and satellite-borne, are used to monitor the atmosphere. In this context, upper air means all of the troposphere above the first hundred meters or so and, in some cases, the stratosphere. There are many uncertainties associated with remote sensing, so there is a demand for in-situ sensors to verify remote measurements. In addition, the balloon- borne instrument package is relatively inexpensive. However, it should be noted that cost is a matter of perspective; a satellite with its instrumentation, ground station, etc. may be cost-effective when the mission is to make measurements all over the world with good space and time resolution, as synoptic meteorology demands. Upper air measurements of pressure, temperature, water vapor, and winds can be made using in-situ instrument packages (carried aloft by balloons, rockets, or airplanes) and by remote sensors. Remote sensors can be classified as active (energy emitters like radar or lidar) or passive (receiving only, like microwave radiometers), and by whether they “look” up from the ground or down from a satellite. Remote sensors are surveyed briefly before discussing in-situ instruments. Profiles of temperature, humidity, density, etc. can be estimated from satellites using multiple narrow-band radiometers. These are passive sensors that measure longwave radiation upwelling from the atmosphere. For example, temperature profiles can be estimated from satellites by measuring infrared radiation emitted by CO2 (bands around 5000 μm) and O2 (bands around 3.4μm and 15μm) in the atmosphere. Winds can be estimated from cloud movements or by using the Doppler frequency shift due to some component of the atmosphere being carried along with the wind. An active sensor (radar) is used to estimate precipitation and, if it is a Doppler radar, determine winds. The great advantage of satellite-borne instruments is that they can cover the whole earth with excellent spatial resolution.

Abstract:
Electromagnetic thermography and optical thermography are both important non-destructive testing (NDT) methods that have been widely used in the fields of modern aerospace, renewable energy, nuclear industry, etc. The excitation modes are crucial whose performances have a decisive effect on the detection results. Previous studies mainly focused on the physics mechanism, applications, and signal processing algorithms. However, the instrument configuration is rarely presented. This paper is to introduces the recently designed excitation sources of electromagnetic thermography and optical thermography detection systems, respectively. These instruments involved L-shaped and Shuttle-shaped sensor structures for electromagnetic thermography and multi-modes excitation for optical thermography. Besides, the topologies and operating principles are shown in detail. Experimental results are carried out to verify the practicability and reliability of the proposed systems.

Abstract:
Symphonies Reframed recreates symphonies as chamber music. The project aims to capture the features that are unique for chamber music, at the juncture between the “soloistic small” and the “orchestral large”. A new ensemble model, the “triharmonic ensemble” with 7-9 musicians, has been created to serve this purpose. By choosing this size range, we are looking to facilitate group interplay without the need of a conductor. We also want to facilitate a richness of sound colours by involving piano, strings and winds. The exact combination of instruments is chosen in accordance with the features of

Abstract:
This rapid review examines evidence on the lessons learned from initiatives aimed at embedding better understanding of cultural heritage protection within international monitoring, reporting and response efforts in conflict and protracted crisis. The report uses the terms cultural property and cultural heritage interchangeably. Since the signing of the Hague Treaty in 1954, there has bee a shift from 'cultural property' to 'cultural heritage'. Culture is seen less as 'property' and more in terms of 'ways of life'. However, in much of the literature and for the purposes of this review, cultural
