MacLeod, Krystal Kehoe, Suzanne Day, and Sandra Smele. New to Long-Term Residential Care. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190862268.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines how the social location of student novice researchers was instrumental in shaping their research experiences, relationships, and accounts as they navigated the complexities of conducting team-based rapid ethnography research in long-term residential care. Using emotional cues in their fieldnotes as indicators of important reflexive moments, the authors focus on four thematic areas where their experiences as student novice researchers enrich the understanding of team-based rapid ethnography in care homes: incorporating reciprocity into participant-observation; being ignored or challenged by research participants in their role as student researchers; positionality, power, and rapport building; and “natural observation” and knowledge production. The authors use their exploration of the challenges they faced and lessons they learned to offer recommendations for undertaking future ethnographic studies in long-term care settings and beyond.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses claims process procedures. Topics covered include whether an existing set of recognized procedural rules is incorporated by reference and, where there is such incorporation, what changes, if any, are made to reflect the particular circumstances of the claims process; whether the constituting instruments or procedural rules include special provisions with respect to evidence and standards of proof; whether the constituting instruments or procedural rules include special provisions with respect to the language(s) of the claims process, and, if applicable, how translation and interpretation services are provided; whether the constituting instruments or procedural rules include special provisions with respect to oral hearings or decisions based on documents only; the extent to which various procedures are conducted by means other than in-person proceedings; and the use of special mass claims processing methodologies. An Editors’ Commentary and separate Annotations show how each of these Mass Claims Processes has handled the matter.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter describes several approaches to conducting imminent risk assessment interviews, which may be applicable to different clinical settings. The chapter has five sections. The first section uses the narrative crisis model of suicidal behavior to combine all the key components of the imminent risk assessment described in the preceding chapters into one comprehensive risk assessment outline. The second section addresses real-world challenges and limitations inherent to suicide risk assessments, limitations of self-reported suicidal ideation and intent, and strategies for minimizing interview bias. The third section is devoted to the potential advantages and disadvantages of using the short-term risk assessment instruments. The fourth section describes three different imminent risk assessment interview strategies and gives examples of each. The final section describes how to recognize a patient who has made a definitive plan to take his or her life behind the mask of “eerie calm.”

Preston, Katherine K. George Frederick Bristow. University of Illinois Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5622/illinois/9780252043420.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
George Frederick Bristow (1825-1898), a pillar of the nineteenth-century New York musical community, was educated, lived, and worked in New York for his entire life. A skilled performer (piano, organ, violin, conducting), he was a decades-long member of the Philharmonic Societies of New York and Brooklyn, and conducted the Harmonic Society, Mendelssohn Union, numerous church choirs, and pickup choral and instrumental ensembles organized for special events. He taught music privately and in the public school system. Bristow’s professional activities were those of a highly skilled urban journeyman musician--typical of many who worked in America during the period. Bristow was a steadfast and outspoken supporter of American composers throughout his career. This started in 1854 with his participation--along with William Henry Fry and editor Richard Storrs Willis--in a months-long journalistic battle that centered on the Philharmonic Society’s lack of support for American composers, an activity that has dominated his historical reputation. But he was also a prolific composer: of five symphonies, two oratorios, an opera, many secular and sacred choral pieces, chamber music, songs, and works for piano and organ. As a quiet and self-effacing individual, Bristow was not a self-promoter. But many of his contemporaries regarded him as a skilled performer, a generous colleague, and the most important American classical composer during much of the mid-century period.

Newins, Amie R., and Laura C. Wilson. A Clinician's Guide to Disclosures of Sexual Assault. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med-psych/9780197523643.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Sexual assault is a worldwide public health concern, as it occurs to people of all genders at alarming rates and results in serious physical and mental health sequelae. The reactions survivors receive from formal and informal supports can significantly influence their recovery. Given the prevalence of sexual assault, all providers need to be prepared to handle disclosures of sexual assault from clients. The aim of this book is to provide guidance on how to interact with survivors of sexual assault, which the authors define as sexual contact or penetration without the explicit consent of the victim. While the book is primarily geared toward mental health professionals, the content is also relevant for professionals who work in medical settings, educational settings, law enforcement, and victim services. The authors also highlight that there are particular populations (e.g., racial and sexual minorities) and settings (e.g., military, higher education) that require particular considerations when discussing sexual violence. Overall, professionals have an instrumental role in facilitating survivor recovery, and this book provides best practices for providing services in an affirming manner. The book begins with a review of literature focused on sexual assault and survivor disclosure. Then, recommendations are provided for conducting assessments and psychotherapy with survivors of sexual assault. Case examples are presented to help illustrate specific recommendations for working with survivors of sexual assault. Finally, particular recommendations for various specific populations are provided.

Corey, David M., and Mark Zelig. Evaluations of Police Suitability and Fitness for Duty. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med-psych/9780190873158.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Corey and Zelig, both experienced and highly regarded police and forensic psychologists, have written a comprehensive overview of the two most common psychological evaluations conducted by police psychologists: evaluations of the psychological suitability of police candidates and the psychological fitness of incumbent police officers. Filling a gap in the practice literature, this is the first text to explain the legal, procedural, ethical, and clinical foundations for these evaluations untethered to any single assessment instrument. The three foundational chapters provide readers with a review of the most prominent federal laws and regulations, professional practice guidelines, and ethical standards pertinent to these evaluations. The four applied chapters provide detailed procedural guidance, including advice for obtaining informed consent, providing disclosure to the involved parties, conducting clinical and collateral interviews, selecting written assessment instruments, integrating the assessment findings to reach determinations of suitability and fitness, and preparing written reports and testimony that anticipate their various audiences and uses. Throughout the text, Corey and Zelig distinguish between enforceable, standards-based requirements and aspirational best practices. Steeped in case law, personal anecdotes, and advice on best practices, and certain to become a valued primer in the field, Corey and Zelig’s Evaluations of Police Suitability and Fitness for Duty is written with a clarity and depth that will appeal to experienced and novice psychologists alike, as well as to police and human resource administrators whose work involves the review or oversight of these evaluations.

Full text
Abstract:
Item response theory (IRT) is a modern measurement theory that, as its name implies, focuses mainly at the item level as opposed to the test level. The underlying principle of IRT is that a relationship exists between an individual’s ability and how the individual responds to items on a test. IRT offers item-level details not provided through classical approaches. The aims of this chapter are to (1) provide a brief overview of IRT, (2) demonstrate the basic features of IRT using existing data, and (3) walk the reader through the key steps in conducting IRT analysis using IRTPRO®. IRT has also increasingly been used to develop, shorten, and refine psychosocial instruments.

Abstract:
Professionals often utilize some form of structured approach (i.e., decision support tool or risk assessment instrument) when evaluating the risk of future violence and associated management needs. This chapter presents an overview of decision support tools that are used to assist professionals when conducting a violence risk assessment and that have received considerable empirical evaluation and professional uptake. The relative strengths and weaknesses of the two main approaches to evaluations of risk (actuarial and structured professional judgment) are discussed, including a review of empirical findings regarding their predictive validity. Following a summary of commonalities among the tools, this chapter provides a brief description of 10 decision support tools focusing on their applicability and purpose, content and characteristics, and available empirical research. Finally, the chapter concludes with a discussion of several critical considerations regarding the appropriate use and selection of tools.

Kibbe, Jennifer D. Covert Action. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acrefore/9780190846626.013.135.

Full text
Abstract:
Covert action presents a potential policy for decision makers who want something quicker or more muscular than diplomacy but less expensive and obtrusive than military force. In contrast with intelligence, which entails collecting and analyzing information, covert action is an active instrument of foreign policy. The three main categories of covert action include propaganda, political action, and paramilitary action. Another separate category is economic action, which involves destabilizing the target state’s economy in some way. Because of the inherent secrecy of covert action, outside scholars have no way of knowing how much they do or do not know about the topic at hand and it also makes it hard to verify the information, since the information comes from a variety of sources. Covert action literature is particularly strong in case studies of particular operations. There is also a well-developed subsection within the field that focuses on covert action since the end of the Cold War, the role that the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) played during World War II, and covert actions undertaken by other states. However, there are several issues in the covert action literature. These issues include the assessment of the success or failure of particular operations and of the policy instrument as a whole, the tangible and intangible costs incurred by covert action, the ethical questions raised by conducting covert actions as well as the particular methods used and its impact on democracy, the oversight of covert action, and the evolution of US law covering covert action.

Tomás, António. Amílcar Cabral. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197525579.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Guinean-born Amílcar Cabral has been hailed as one of the most original voices in revolutionary processes on the African continent. He was not only behind one of the most resourceful independence movement in Africa, the PAIGC (African Party for the Liberation of Guinea and Cape Verde). But the challenge he posed against the colonial military might was also instrumental to end of Portuguese colonialism altogether. For reaction against Estado Novo brewed mostly in Bissau, on the account of a war the Portuguese was waging against the guerrilla and could not win. This biography describes Cabral’s upbringing in Cape Verde, his political coming of age in Lisbon, as a student in agronomy and anticolonial activist, as well as his transformation into one of the most revered revolutionaries in the world. However, contrary to most studies on Cabral, which tend to rely on the materials produced during the liberation war, this book approaches the life of Cabral from a slightly different perspective. It explores a trove of Lusophone sources, particularly those ones that use contemporary issues to illuminate historical conundrums. The political trajectory Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau have followed sheds light not only on Cabral’s quest for identity – being born in Guinea-Bissau from Cape Verdeans parents – But also on the day-to-day conduction of the anti-colonial war itself.

Unger, Brigitte, Lucia Rossel, and Joras Ferwerda, eds. Combating Fiscal Fraud and Empowering Regulators. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198854722.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book showcases a multidisciplinary set of work on the impact of regulatory innovation on the scale and nature of tax evasion, tax avoidance, and money laundering. We consider the international tax environment an ecosystem undergoing a period of rapid change as shocks such as the financial crisis, new business forms, scandals and novel regulatory instruments impact upon it. This ecosystem evolves as jurisdictions, taxpayers, and experts react. Our analysis focuses mainly on Europe and five new regulations: Automatic Exchange of Information, which requires that accounts held by foreigners are reported to authorities in the account holder’s country of residence; the OECD’s Base Erosion and Profit Shifting initiative and Country by Country Reporting, which attempt to reduce the opportunity spaces in which corporations can limit tax payments and utilize low or no tax jurisdictions; the Legal Entity Identifier which provides a 20-digit identification code for all individual, corporate or government entities conducting financial transactions; and the Fourth and Fifth Anti-Money Laundering Directives, that criminalize tax crimes and prescribe that the Ultimate Beneficial Owner of a company is registered. Working from accounting, economic, political science, and legal perspectives, the analysis in this book provides an assessment of the reforms and policy recommendations that will reinforce the international tax system. The collection also flags the dangers posed by emerging tax loopholes provided by new business models and in the form of freeports and golden passports. Our central message is that inequality can and has to be reduced substantially, and we can achieve this through an improved international tax system.

George, Erika. Incorporating Rights. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199941483.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Incorporating Rights: Strategies to Advance Corporate Accountability examines existing and emerging advocacy strategies that could conceivably close a global governance gap that puts human rights at risk and places commercial actors at risk of becoming complicit in human rights abuses when conducting business in emerging market economies and complex environments. Corporate codes of conduct, sustainability reporting, and selected multistakeholder initiatives are presented as the building blocks of a system of soft law that could solidify to become binding baseline standards for better business practices. This book explains the conditions that have given rise to constructive change as well as those methods and mechanisms with promise for ensuring that business enterprises incorporate human rights considerations into business operations. This book explores how capital and consumer markets could provide an additional or alternative form of enforcement to promote responsible business conduct. It provides accounts of the creation of industry sector regulatory instruments and governance institutions arising from allegations of corporate complicity in human rights abuses. It examines how corporate social responsibility initiatives could close the governance gap and how codes of conduct could come to regulate like real rules. This book argues that regulation through information is essential to ensure that corporate conduct will be informed by human rights considerations and implemented consistent with respect for human rights. Where concerned consumers and investors exercise preferences for products that are not associated with abuse and have access to information on corporate performance and risks posed to human rights, there is potential to change corporate conduct. Societal expectations are increasing and evolving.

Møller, Ann Merete. Evidence-based medicine in anaesthesia. Edited by Jonathan G. Hardman. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199642045.003.0029.

Full text
Abstract:
Evidence-based medicine (EBM) is defined as ‘The judicious use of the best current evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients’. Evidence-based medicine (EBM) is meant to integrate clinical expertise with the best available research evidence and patient values. The purpose of EBM is to assist clinicians in making the best decisions. Practising EBM includes asking an answerable, well-defined clinical question, searching for information, critically appraising information retrieved, extracting data, synthesizing data, and making conclusions about the overall effect. The clinical question includes information of the following elements: the population, the intervention, and the clinically relevant outcomes in focus. The clinical question is a tool to make the focus of the question clearer, and an aid to build the following search strategy. A comprehensive and reproducible literature search is essential for conducting a high-quality and up-to-date search. The search should include all relevant clinical databases. Papers retrieved after the search must be critically appraised and evaluated for the risk of bias. Evidence-based methods are used in the production of systematic reviews, and the development of clinical guidelines. Whether a meta-analysis should be performed depends on the quality and nature of the extracted data. Practising EBM may be challenged by a lack of well-performed trials, various types of bias (including publication bias), and heterogeneity between existing trials. Several tools have been constructed to help the process; examples are the CONSORT statement, the PRISMA statement, and the AGREE instrument.
