The purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate the usefulness and need to make an instrument available to European Regional Governments that helps to understand and evaluate the educational conditions of the regional population when compared with other regions. The Report shows how, over the decade, all the Regional Governments have undertaken to adapt training systems to the demographic dynamics characterised by the general ageing of the population and by migratory phenomena. Simultaneously the Report also shows the need for urgent improvements in some fields where the impact of policies is still too modest and where the risk of stagnation must be dealt with (for example, lifelong learning policies and NEET reduction).

Music is an international key aspect of humanity which impacts life, from love songs to religion, politics, and warfare. Changes in culture and developments in science drove musical progress from printing and distribution to instrumental improvements, innovation, and the acoustics of buildings and concert halls. Every aspect increased public demand and changed compositional styles, plus heightened the need for virtuosic star performers. Conversely, the attempts to record and distribute music inspired the growth of recording systems, microphones, and electronic amplifiers, which has resulted in the electronically dominated world as we now know it. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an accessible and detailed narrative which will enable collectors, dealers, museum curators and auction house staff to assess and ascribe a date (or dates) to a given instrument. The narrative is chronological and describes, decade by decade, how the technical and aesthetic features of the chronometer movement, box fittings and dial all changed over the course of the century. It also emphasises the importance of recognising that these functional instruments were frequently updated and improved over their many years of service, and that this has to be borne in mind when dating, and that such updates and improvements should be considered as part of the objects valid history and not something to be removed.

Abstract:

This chapter considers the relationship of Brussels 2012 and Lugano 2007 with certain other instruments. It covers EU instruments, conventions between Member States, and conventions on a particular matter. It concludes that protection should be given to specialized conventions: as shown in Chapter 10, maritime claims largely depend on them. Nevertheless, it would be undesirable if the improvements developed in EU measures — especially Brussels 2012 — were inapplicable in cases to which specialized conventions applied. Thus, the Court of Justice of the European Union's decision in the <i>TNT Express Nederland</i> case was justified; however, working out practical solutions will not be easy.

Dennett argues that Darwinism provides a universal theory of adaptation and improvement in design. In his “Tower of Generate and Test,” Dennett distinguishes four kinds of creatures that realize a Darwinian pattern on different scales and with different degrees of sophistication: Darwinian, Skinnerian, Popperian, and Gregorian creatures. I examine Dennett’s tower in the light of recent work on learning, and in the context of the phylogenetic tree. A class of associative learners—Humean organisms—probably lies between Dennett’s Darwinian and Skinnerian creatures. Various cognitive capacities are also more demanding than instrumental conditioning, but insufficient for Popperian cognition in Dennett’s sense. Creatures corresponding to these intermediate stages are named—Carnapian, Pearlian, Tolmanian. These stages are not arranged in a tower.

This chapter tells of a moment when the artistic value of the accordion came into greater focus. From conservatories to concert halls to competition stages, the absence of the accordion was touted as evidence of injustice. What's more, the improvement of the accordion's repertoire, pedagogy, and physical construction were prescribed as an urgent undertaking—and as vital contributions to the elevation of American cultural sensibilities. This chapter discusses the work of some of the accordion's most outstanding midcentury practitioners and promoters and the importance of innovations such as the free-bass converter system—the accordion's bid to be recognized not only as a legitimate instrument but an artist's instrument, worthy of the concert hall. It then concludes with a profile of Guido Deiro's younger brother Pietro Deiro (1888–1954), the self-described “Daddy of the Accordion.”

During recent years, empirical trust research has significantly advanced our understanding about the interdependencies of social and political trust. This progress can mostly be attributed to major improvements of measurement instruments in survey research. Research on the causes of both forms of trust have examined the top-down approach of trust building, which places importance on fair and impartial political institutions, such as the police and judiciary, as well as societal accounts of trust building that relate to the role of social networks and parents as well as perceptions of inequality. While there is a modest relationship between social forms of trust and political forms of trust, research has not entirely disentangled the flow of causality between the two. Recent insights into contextual and individual-level covariates of social and political trust may hold answers regarding future developments and political and societal consequences.

This chapter continues the discussion of the lives of young Islamists, focusing on their articulations of their hopes and goals. Analyzing the trove of data that the author uncovered from first-person narratives and life histories, transcripts, and extended participant observation, the author found that young people were looking for nothing less than a new sense of self. Their decisions are multiple, multilayered, and constantly renegotiated, but they can only be understood by making sense of the new identities that are sustained by their collective action. The author argues that Islamism is not simply ideological; it is instrumental—an avenue to a new identity, to new ways of seeing and thinking about themselves. The author dubs this the new politics of personal empowerment, where Islamist movements are reimagined as individual improvement factories: places to go not simply to become better Muslims, but to better their lot in life or the perception of that lot.

An overview of the founding of the Royal Society of London and early members, including Robert Hooke, Isaac Newton, John Wilkins, Robert Boyle, and Henry Oldenburg, who first published the Philosophical Transactions. In addition to the creation and improvement of scientific instruments, including microscopes and telescopes, as recorded by their historian Thomas Sprat, the members of the Royal Society wished to create a language of science free from distorting images and metaphor and to base science on empirical experiments and direct observation. Although challenged by many for promoting an atheist understanding of the natural world, members such as Robert Boyle defended science as complementary with theology. The Society promoted publications and established networks of scientific correspondence to include members outside London and on the Continent.

Abstract:

This chapter focuses on the European Union’s environmental policy, the development of which was characterized by institutional deepening and the substantial expansion of environmental issues covered by EU decisions and regulations. Environmental policy presents a host of challenges for policymakers, including the choice of appropriate instruments, improvement of implementation performance, and better policy coordination at all levels of policy-making. The chapter points to the continuing adaptations that have been made in these areas. It first considers the historical evolution of environmental policy in the EU before discussing the main actors in EU environmental policy-making, namely: the European Commission, the Council of the European Union, the European Parliament, the Court of Justice of the European Union, and environmental interest groups. The chapter also looks at the EU as an international actor.

Abstract:

The governance of natural resource wealth is considered to constitute a key determinant in whether the extraction of natural resources proves to be a blessing or a curse. In response to this challenge, a variety of international initiatives have emerged to codify successful policies pursued by countries, and promote global norms and best practices to guide decision-makers. These initiatives, such as the Extractives Industry Transparency Initiative, have seen success in spreading and embedding governance norms, ranging across revenue transparency, contract disclosure, and the creation of instruments such as resource funds and building institutions for checks and balances. However, evidence for causal impact remains weak and sometimes limited to anecdotal cases. The end of the super-cycle of commodity prices, and the prospect of permanently lower prices for fossil fuels, creates new challenges for resource-rich countries but may also allow space and time for reflection, lesson-learning and improvements in governance.

Abstract:

Global demand for art and historical artefacts makes them attractive for international crime. A diverse array of offences includes robbery/theft, illicit excavation, illicit import and export, forgery, fraud, and dealing in stolen goods. Cultural objects are also at risk of destruction and pillage in armed conflicts, offences treated as war crimes. The international community has long endeavoured to develop instruments to improve protection of cultural property. These efforts include, for armed conflicts, the Regulations concerning the Laws and Customs of War on Land, the 1954 Hague Convention and the Rome Statute and, for illegal trade, the 1970 UNESCO Convention and the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention. Despite all these efforts, there is still room for improvement, and in particular to strengthen international cooperation among law enforcement agencies and authorities for protecting cultural property. International organisations like Interpol and UNESCO play a key role in this regard as driving forces and intermediaries.

Abstract:

Psychodrama is a method of research and intervention in interpersonal relationships. Objective: The aim of the present study is to investigate and train group relationships in a multidisciplinary healthcare team. Material & Methods: Participants: The study population included employees who work in a Basic Family Health (UBSF), which was randomly selected. This facility was located in a medium-sized city within the state of São Paulo. We used the following tools: Form of Profile Survey and Interview Guide associated to Socio-demographic Data, Relational Functioning, and the team’s Sociometric choices. The researchers designed other Instruments of Protocol. Procedure: The participants responded to the study instruments and subsequently they underwent the Role Playing Program. They were re-evaluated at the end of the Development and Training Roles Program and reassessed at the end of the program. Patients show good clinical evaluation free of complications in a 60-day follow-up. Conclusions: The results show changes and improvements in the personal lives of those involved in their performance at work, and in the creation of coping strategies due to the professional role. Our results also indicate the importance of continuous and permanent training to maintain the properly functioning of the team. The participants also need a greater time to achieve internal and subjective changes identified with the intervention. We achieved the proposed objectives, which were as follows: effectiveness of the sociopsychodramatic methodology in groups regarding training and role play and changes in interdisciplinary relationships. However, more research on a case by case basis is recommended in order to generalize the results.

Abstract:

The objective of this study was to analyze the perception of teachers, managers and family members of the municipal and state education system in a city in the Metropolitan Region of Recife / PE regarding the quality of basic education, difficulties faced, student performance and the process of implementing the civic-military model in the the public school. 64 subjects participated in the study, which were subdivided into 13 managers, 30 teachers working in elementary and high school and 21 parents / guardians of a municipal school and a state school. The instruments used for data collection were 3 (three) electronic questionnaires developed in Google forms, containing objective and subjective questions, directed to managers, teachers and parents / guardians. Quantitative data were treated statistically by the PRISMA for Windows program - Version 4.03 and analyzed by the Chi-square test, with p <0.05, expressed in percentages, and the data referring to the qualitative evaluation were treated through analysis of content, with data represented qualitatively and expressed in a table. It was found in this study, from the perception of teachers, managers and parents about basic education, that the main problems faced are associated with the low interest of students in studies (69.2%; 76.7%, p= 0.032) and lack of adequate structure (50%, p= 0.038). Regarding the contribution of the civic-military model, the study pointed out the improvement of students' behavior in the family, school and social environment (71.4% p= 0.053), improving the quality of basic education with an emphasis on access, permanence and in learning (66.7% p= 0.036), makes the teacher feel valued (61.9% p= 0.042), contributes to preventing violence in the school environment and improving school performance (66.7% p= 0.024), contributes to the promotion of society's moral, civic and patriotic values (81.0 p= 0.031), and based on the current model (55%; 54.2% p= 0.005) of teachers and parents feel dissatisfied. We conclude that the civic-military model can contribute to reducing evasion, valuing the teacher, improving student behavior, improving the quality of basic education with an emphasis on access, permanence and learning and contributing to the promotion of society’s family, civic and patriotic end moral values.
