This dissertation describes the research, development and reasoning behind a family of musical instruments called Exertion Instruments. They use inline electrical generators to run a synthesizer and an amplifier while eliminating the need for batteries. Efficient acoustic design minimizes the power requirements while optimized generator and ergonomic design maximize power generation. As such, they combine the convenience of acoustic instruments with the flexibility of electronic instruments. Also, through new generator designs, nuances of player charging movements become as important to expression as the overall intensity of their playing. The player treats the generator like a typical physical resonator such as a string, using musical instrument playing gestures. Yet they manipulate audio electronically, enabling practices like sampling, synthesis and modulation. During development, a modular approach using amateur-friendly materials was taken to empower future instrument builders to customize and improve the instrument. In addition to technical criteria based on measurements, Exertion Instruments are evaluated through player and builder experiences in a series of technical workshops and realworld performances.

Instruments of Service are defined by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) as "representations, in any medium of expression now known or later developed, of the tangible and intangible creative work performed by the Architect." This thesis argues that the current instruments of service do not provide the scaffolding necessary to realize the ethical obligations as defined by the AIA. As cities change, architecture's fundamental obligations, as defined by AIA code of ethics, are threatened. To remain ethical, this thesis argues that the instruments of service must expand. This thesis explores the gap between architecture's obligations and its instruments of service against the backdrop of one such changing city: Boston. We begin with an investigation of the Seaport, one of the most rapidly changing neighborhoods within the city. We use this site as an opportunity to understand how a variety of architects and planners have positioned themselves and how they offer their services to a project that champions a new future for the city of Boston. Against this backdrop, we propose a new method and attitude of practice. We tested this proposed practice for a period of nine months on the ground in Boston and Cambridge. Specifically, we converted four unused sites into artist and community space-our involvement spanning from site identification to policy recommendations to daily operations. This thesis documents parts of that practice. Overall, this thesis is a suggestion and a real world test of one way architects can operate as instrumental shapers of the future of their city.

This thesis presents several new percussion instruments that explore the ideas of musical networks; playing, recording, and developing musical material; continuous control over rhythm and timbre; pressure sensing; and electronic / acoustic hybrids. These instruments use the tools of electronics and computation to extend the role of percussion by creating new ways for people to play percussion alone, together, and in remote locations. Two projects are presented in detail. The Beatbugs are a system of eight hand-held networked instruments that are designed to let children enter simple rhythmic motifs and send those motifs to be developed further by the other players. Results from three workshops and performances are discussed. Preliminary results are also presented for the Remote Drum Network, a system that lets people play drums together over the internet even in high latency situations by synchronizing their audio streams and delaying them to match each player's next phrase.

Full textThe design of intelligent instruments is a complex field. Competences in physics, mechanics and electronics are needed for the design of the material part while competences in computing sciences are needed for the design of the software part. Moreover, such intelligent instruments are frequently used in critical environments. The designed software must then answer strong reliability constraints. One way of improving the design of such instruments, is the creation of a dedicated software design environment which guides and constraints the instrument designer (often not computer scientist) in s/he's work. Such an environment must : - support a generic design model in order to be able to support the design of any intelligent instruments. This model must abstracted away programming level concerns, - provide a design language which the instrument designer is familiar with - guide and constrain the designer such that the conceived software respects identified properties, intrinsic with the model. This thesis addresses the problem of the construction of such an environment. It tackles the problem from a new point of view : the construction of a software environment centred on architectural models. Software architecture is represented by formal models at several levels of abstraction. At each level, properties can be checked. In this thesis, the Arch Ware ADL language is used. The use of this language allows us to support the capitalization and the reuse of the expertise of the intelligent instrument field. This is realized in particular with the architectural style concept

This thesis proposes to use technology to introduce children to musical expressivity and creativity. It describes a set of digital musical instruments that were developed in an effort to provide children with new tools for interaction, exploration and enjoyment of music. The thesis unfolds a multidisciplinary theoretical background, which reviews a number of philosophical, psychological, musical, and technological theories. The theoretical background focuses on enlightening a number of personal musical experiences and leads towards the formulation of three musical concepts that inform the design of the digital musical instruments. The musical concepts are: High and Low-level Musical Control, Immersive and Constructive Musical Experiences and Interdependent Group Playing. The thesis presents the embodiment of these concepts in digital musical instruments while emphasizing the importance of novel technology as a provider of creative and expressive musical experiences for children.

A critical inquiry was undertaken to explore the role that architecture, development, architectural criticism, and urban intervention played, as representational and ideological tools, in the process of British colonial formation in Lucknow, from 1765 to 1858. Results show: (1) Architecture and development played a crucial role in annexation of Lucknow by the British in 1856, (2) Orientalist architectural criticism was an instrument to justify the annexation of the city and the deposition of its rulers, (3) the British government used urban intervention and massive urban surgery to establish their political and social control over Lucknow, and (4) through the representation of the pre-colonial city as an impediment to progress and change, the British colonial enterprise permanently destroyed the indigenous socio-political economy and culture that symbolized the flouring city between 1765 and 1858. Since then, Lucknow has yet to recover.

The social, political and economic history of Detroit has been inextricably linked to the development of its most dominant industry: automotive manufacturing. This thesis suggests a strategy to overcome the disadvantages of this industrial legacy, drawing from the city's viable contemporary social resources and dynamics in order to incite the informal gathering of individuals together for the performance of music. It is at the scale of the individual and the neighborhood that such a transformative process can occur. In order to combat the slow erasure and abandonment of neighborhoods near Detroit's downtown area, this project seeks to take advantage of the indigenous resources available to it, by using abandoned structures and materials. It acknowledges the primacy of sound and nature on the experience of the site.

Aimi, Roberto Mario 1973. "Hybrid percussion : extending physical instruments using sampled acoustics." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/38640.
Full textIncludes bibliographical references (p. 133-138).
This thesis presents a system architecture for creating hybrid digital-acoustic percussion instruments by combining extensions of existing signal processing techniques with specially-designed semi-acoustic physical controllers. This work aims to provide greater realism to digital percussion, gaining much of the richness and understandability of acoustic instruments while preserving the flexibility of digital systems. For this thesis, I have collaborated with percussionists to develop a range of instruments, to refine and extend the algorithmic and physical designs, and to determine successful models of interaction. Conventional percussion controllers measure and discretize the intensity of strikes into discrete trigger messages, but they also ignore the timbre of the hits and fail to track more ambiguous input. In this work, the continuous acoustic output of a struck physical object is processed to add the resonance of a sampled instrument. This is achieved by employing existing low-latency convolution algorithms which have been extended to give the player control over features such as damping, spectral flattening, nonlinear effects, and pitch.
(cont.) One of the advantages of this approach is that light taps, scrapes, rubs, or stirring with brushes all take on a hybrid timbre of the real and sampled sound that is surprisingly realistic and controllable. Since part of its behavior is inherently acoustic, a player's intuition about interacting with physical objects can be applied to controlling it. The ability to transform the apparent acoustic properties of objects also suggests applications to HCI and product design contexts.

In Translations from Drawing to Building, Historian Robin Evans draws attention to the "blind spot between the drawing and its object" as a productive site in architecture. Instead of a "uniform space through which meaning may glide without modulation", the "substratum" of this "gap" is uneven and unpredictable, a space of "entropy" and a "locale of subterfuges and evasions." Through their passage, "things can get bent, broken or lost on the way." Evans sees architects exploring "deviations" and "potentialities" here by "maintaining sufficient control in transit so that more remote destinations may be reached." Today we manipulate drawings and 3D models in software programs and visualize them at human-computer interface moments like the display, the plotter and the 3D printer. Meanwhile, at internal machine-to-machine interfaces, algorithms regularly carry out translations, their "labor behind or below the threshold of perception" (John May, "Field Notes from the Instruments Project" in JAE). Theorist Paul Virilio describes virtual drawings and models here as "signals in the electronic currents of a closed-system, readable by machines but neither visible nor legible to humans" (The Vision Machine). My thesis gives form to these unseen computer translations between different representations of our drawings and objects. The three sections: Plotting, Meshing and Rendering, materialize the underlying infrastructure of the computer representation technology we interact with daily as designers, exploiting a form of "time-lapse" image to freeze moments that happen within an instant inside the computer. The thesis asks architects to question our relationship with our tools and invites us to explore Evans' "blind spot" and claim this fertile territory for the designer, leveraging our visual-spatial and interdisciplinary knowledge culture for new experimental ends.

Full textThis thesis discusses the design of an active Fault Tolerant Control (FTC) strategy for improvement of the operational control capability of the safety critical systems. The FTC strategy works in such a way that once a fault is detected by the Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) unit, a compensation loop is activated for safe recovery. A key feature of the proposed strategy is that the design of the FTC loop is done independently of the nominal control law already in place. For a given application, one can select the appropriate “FTC controller / FDI unit” from the designed set of all admissible FDI/FTC units. The selection is done using performance indicators based on µ-analysis and µg-analysis. Finally, the proposed approach is applied to a faulty scenario of a realistic nonlinear benchmark of a large transport aircraft within European Flight Mechanics Action Group (FM-AG(16)) of GARTEUR program. The goal is to provide a “self-repairing” capability to enable the pilot to land the aircraft safely in the event of a stabilizer fault

Full textTechnological advances have reflected not only on the way of learning and teaching but also on pedagogical practices and architectures for the educational context. In this panorama, the search for interdisciplinarity, coupled with a holistic view of the individual, considers not only the cognition but also the social and affective aspects of the students. Faced with this reality, one can see the need to construct and apply pedagogical architectures focused on these aspects, which encompass technological resources such as the computer and the construction of tangible interfaces by students, such as digital musical instruments (DMIs). Along with these, the possibilities of the use of music in the educational context were extended. It is understood that one of the characteristics of the adolescent public is the search for the feeling of belonging to a group. This can occur through participation in various activities focused on sound and/or musical expression through technologies such as DMIs. Given these premises, this research has the goal of analyzing how a Pedagogical Architecture (PA) aimed at the construction and use of digital musical instruments (DMIs) can contribute to foster socio-affective aspects in non-musician adolescent students. For this, the present study is based on a qualitative approach. The data collection was made from observations, questionnaires, videos, technological productions and records about the social interactions and moods states of the students. It is understood that the contributions of this investigation may imply changes in the design of learning spaces related to pedagogical architectures for the construction and use of physical-sounding prototypes and/or digital musical instruments for educational purposes.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to investigate man's use of the mollusk within selected art forms, and to use the research results to design a contemporary museum exhibition, relevant within a South African context. Two sections are presented. In section A the selected art forms, fine arts, architecture, furniture design, masks and music and other sound instruments are thoroughly investigated to determine in what way the mollusk/shell is used in or on these art forms. A large number of figures are included to illustrate the available examples, and to aid the reader in the visualization of these applications. In section B a design solution is presented, based on the research results of section A. The compilation of an exhibition team and the whole design process, from the choice of an exhibition theme to the evaluation of the exhibition, is investigated. The exhibition designer plays the important role of interpreting the research results and to compile a design solution. A wide variety of exhibition techniques are recommended for the design solution, including theatre productions, special lighting and sound effects, demonstrations and tours. A number of figures are included, where photos taken during the museum visitations and design sketches provide further insight into the design solution. From the research results it was noted that an educational subject such as the mollusk/shell, can be made timely and attractive for the museum visitor by the use of creative, contemporary and relative exhibition techniques.

No typology has fragmented urban space more than the parking garage. In fact, the city of Houston's parking contingent practice has a resulted in a garage on 30% of the downtown district. The range from a few underground floors to 15 stories above ground make the garage both a defining contextual attribute and a testament to independently functioning sites. This thesis speculates upon the parking garage typology as an instrument of urban legibility and future growth. When limited to the efficiencies of disciplinary conventions garages are distinct facilitative structures that are site adapted anywhere and predictably limited to the function of vehicle storage. Yet by focussing on the immense scale, the structural language of the garage can be configured as a structural infrastructure that can serve beyond the needs of the vehicle and exert higher-level roles for greater urban spaces.

Full textIn this paper we describe the flight software for the SETS (Shuttle Electrodynamic Tethered System) experiment. The SETS experiment will fly as part of the TSS-1 (Tethered Satellite System) experiment on STS-46 currently scheduled for July 1992. The software consists of two major components: the SETSOS (SETS Operating System) and the SETS Application. The SETSOS is a UNIX-like operating system developed especially for realtime data acquisition, instrument control and command processing. The SETSOS, like all operating systems, provides resource management for application programs. It is UNIX-like in that access to resources is provided through a standard set of UNIX system calls. The SETSOS also implements the standard UNIX I/O model and a hierarchical file system. In addition to providing access to physical devices, the SETSOS provides support for two virtual devices: a packet-based data device and a command device. The packet-based data device is used by applications to place data into the telemetry stream. The command device is used to manage commands from the command uplink as well as other sources including other applications and other processors. The SETS Application is the primary program which runs under the SETSOS to handle data acquisition, instrument control and command processing. It executes as 5 separate processes, each performing a special task. The tasks include housekeeping data acquisition, limit checking, timeline management, and command processing. The processes communicate via shared memory. Time critical processing is coordinated by using signals and interrupts. In addition to a description of the software, we will discuss the relative merits and tradeoffs of using such a system design for command processing and data acquisition.

Full textThis thesis questions and compares two augmented reality devices, one, UrbaSee, intended for the mediation of urban space during a Concerted Development Zone project, the other, HistoPad, intended for the mediation of urban space. the reconstruction of a historic space. An empirical research jointly combines devices analyzes and ethnographic inquiry through four parts comprised of three chapters each. The first part, establishing our epistemological posture, our methodology of investigation and the definition of fields and cases under study, considers the connection between a semiotics of writing and the anthropology of figuration. The second part questions devices as a poietic technology of seeing. A technosemiotic analysis and a phenomenotechnical approach situate the image of augmented reality between an art image and a scientific image, in which we observe a disproportionate editorial utterance. The third part considers the devices as performative technologies of the imagination, oscillating between a stimulated imagination and a fantasized technology that we analyze through the prism of media variation. Our fourth part shows that these writing strategies mask a process of ownership. The analysis of the belief regimes that these devices give rise to, the creative mediations and the knowledge-power relations between partners and creators of augmented reality devices, reveals the symbolic and economic takeover of the software industry over the projects of others. What our thesis reflects is perhaps the start of a change in the technical, economic and symbolic environment of the practices of the trades in urban and museum spaces

Today's tools and instruments, whether musical or graphical, fall into two very distinct classes, each with its own benefits and drawbacks. Traditional physical instruments offer a richness and uniqueness of qualities that result from the unique properties of the physical materials used to make them. The hand-crafted qualities are also very important for these tools. In contrast, electronic and computer-based instruments lack this richness and uniqueness; they produce very predictable and generic results, but offer the advantage of flexibility, as they can be many instruments in one. I propose a new approach to designing and building instruments which attempts to combine the best of both, and I call this approach "hybrid instruments", since the resulting instruments exist simultaneously in both the physical and digital environments. The approach is characterized by a sampling of the instrument's physical matter and its properties and is complemented by a physically simulated, virtual shape or other digital signal manipulations. This thesis describes the key concepts of the approach and presents an actual example of such a hybrid instrument: the Chameleon Guitar. The guitar project contains several aspects: separation of the guitar interface from its acoustic content; division of the acoustic content into a physical part and a digital processing part; and maximization of the user's freedom in each of the domains. I provide a historical and technical overview; discuss related works, motivation and concepts, and present the design of the Chameleon Guitar.
(cont.) In addition the project evaluation by musicians and instrument-makers is described, together with future work and conclusions. I hope to demonstrate that this approach to building digital instruments maintains some of the rich qualities and variation found in real instruments (the result of natural materials combined with craft) with the flexibility and open-endedness of virtual instruments.

This thesis presents several works involving robotic musical instruments. Robots have long been used in industry for performing repetitive tasks, or jobs requiring superhuman strength. However, more recently robots have found a niche as musical instruments. The works presented here attempt to address the musicality of these instruments, their use in various settings, and the relationship of a robotic instrument to its human player in terms of mapping and translating gesture to sound. The primary project, The Chandelier, addresses both hardware and software issues, and builds directly from experience with two other works, The Marshall Field's Flower Show and Jeux Deux. The Marshall Field's Flower Show is an installation for several novel musical instruments and controllers. Presented here is a controller and mapping system for a Yamaha Disklavier player piano that allows for real-time manipulation of musical variations on famous compositions. The work is presented in the context of the exhibit, but also discussed in terms of its underlying software and technology. Jeux Deux is a concerto for hyperpiano, orchestra, and live computer graphics.
(cont.) The software and mapping schema for this piece are presented in this thesis as a novel method for live interaction, in which a human player duets with a computer controlled player piano. Results are presented in the context of live performance. The Chandelier is the culmination of these past works, and presents a full-scale prototype of a new robotic instrument. This instrument explores design methodology, interaction, and the relationship-and disconnect-of a human player controlling a robotic instrument. The design of hardware and software, and some mapping schema are discussed and analyzed in terms of playability, musicality, and use in public installation and individual performance. Finally, a proof-of-concept laser harp is presented as a low-cost alternative musical controller. This controller is easily constructed from off-the-shelf parts. It is analyzed in terms of its sensing abilities and playability.

Reich, Rebecca Danielle 1977. "Instrument identification through a simulated cochlear implant processing system." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/62373.

The signal processing used by cochlear implants is primarily designed to convey speech and environmental sounds, and can cause distortion of music. Although some studies of implanted listeners have demonstrated their limited ability to identify instruments, these results do not suggest whether the sound-processing system or the subjects' physiological state is the limiting factor. In this research, normal-hearing subjects determined the extent to which a simulation of the sound processing of a common cochlear implant degraded their ability to recognize instruments. The signal processing simulated in this study included bandpass filtering, rectification and lowpass filtering. Musical signals consisting of acoustic and synthetic solo instrument performances of short phrases were passed through the simulation, and presented to 25 normal-hearing participants as part of an instrument identification task. Eight acoustic and eleven synthesized common instrument timbres were used as input signals to the simulation and two rectification methods were studied for comparison purposes. Subjects were asked to identify the instrument presented, for the unaltered sounds and the sounds processed by the simulation. Identification scores for sounds heard through the simulation were significantly lower than those for unaltered sounds, due to the limited time and frequency information transmitted by the processing scheme. The results support the hypothesis that it is necessary to pursue alternative processing schemes for the implant, specifically intended for music-listening purposes.

Full textStarting from the analysis of the sustainability concepts, of hospitals architecture, of comfort and quality, it is verified the importance of the concern that hospitals projects should have, since the beginning, with the natural resources and its adaptation to the environment. Through a Post Occupancy Evaluation of the Hospital Universitário de Londrina it is verified that the main problems detected by the users - problems responsible for the unsatisfactory evaluation of the spaces - are those that are directly related to the project and its inadequacy to the place. It is proposed an evaluation instrument, a guide that can be used by architects during the elaboration of hospitals projects, in the evaluation of ready projects and of built buildings and in use, that can verifies the compromising of the project under the environmental aspects, of comfort and quality, functional, constructive and aesthetic.

Full textThis study analyzes the place of crafts and the craftsmen in the antique cities of Algeria by reviewing the available documentation - archival, reports of excavations, plans, photos and publications. Leaning on a field work, the updated data brought precision or new elements on the urban workshops discovered between 19th and second half of 20th centuries: the remains of each installation are located, described and documented; a dating is proposed when it is possible. This work of analysis leads to qualify or to refute several interpretations of our predecessors because after consideration, vestiges indicated as workshops finally appear to have not been correctly identified. On the other hand, the craft installations identified with certainty allow studying more in detail the typological and technical characteristics of every attested speciality: the food crafts, the production and the processing of textile industries, the production of ceramic, glass and metal objects, and the crafts of building. The comparison between the technical specificities of the antique algerian workshops and those roman workshops discovered somewhere else in the Empire bring us to recognize very strong similarities but also some local, african differences. Secondly, the study of the distribution and the location of workshops in the city leads to specify the reasons of the presence of the officinae in a specific place according to their speciality. It seems that the choices of establishment were more guided by the needs for supply of raw materials and not by the nuisances which these activities could possibly cause: workshops were located as well in the suburbs as in the residential districts. To finish, the analysis of the inscriptions brings some information about craftsmen and about their social status
