Abstract:
In this paper we describe two projects. The first is our novel and superior method of calculating the shape of the cornea of the eye from measuring instuments, called videokeratographs, that typically shine a pattern (usually rings) of light onto the cornea and then capture the reflection pattern on a CCD array using a built-in video camera. Accurate and detailed information about the shape of the cornea is critical for the diagnosis and correction of vision problems. The second project is a virtual environment simulation of the surgical procedure of minimallyinvasive gallbladder removal, which is known as laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Our simulation is designed to enable us to easily experiment with different approaches to addressing the major issues of surgical simulation, and it represents our attempt to leverage a great deal of surgical experience in creating a simulation that focuses on the most important, most error-prone steps in the procedure. Currently we are expanding the simulation code to serve as a general-purpose surgical simulation authoring tool, experimenting with new tissue modeling techniques, and constructing a new haptic interface device.

Abstract:
Introduction: The full decontamination and disinfection of the root canal system is essential for the success of regenerative endodontic procedures. The current literature does not have information regarding mechanical cleaning of immature teeth with contemporary endodontic instuments. Aim: To compare the thickness and volume of the dentin removed from the roots of immature teeth after endodontic preparation using XP-endo Finisher, GentleFile Brush and a standard H-file scraping technique through micro-computed tomography. Methods: The study included 51 immature permanent molars. Endodontic access was prepared and without performing preliminary extirpation of the pulp, the teeth were divided into three groups. The first group of teeth were instrumented for two minutes with XP-endo Finisher, the second - two minutes with Gentlefile Brush, in the third group the root canals walls were scraped with a No. 40 H-file. The thickness and the volume of the removed dentin was assessed using micro-CT imaging before and after the use of the instruments. Results: There is no statistically significant difference in the mean values of thickness of dentin removed between the teeth, prepared with XP-endo finisher and Gentlefile Brush. When comparing the mean values of volume of dentin removed between the separate groups, a statistically significant difference was discovered for every compared pair with the highest volume of removed dentin in the group prepared with a hand instrument. Conclusion: The endodontic systems tested when used in immature permanent teeth remove significantly less quantity of hard dental structures compared to a hand file for scraping the root canal.

Abstract:
The existence of a tradition of bow-playing is recorded in some of the earlies written accounts of the Zulu people. Captain Gardiner in 1836 (pp. 104—5 and p1. 1) notes the presence of a gourd-resonated musical bow. It is not, however, clear which of the two Zulu gourd-resonated bows Gardiner encountered. He provides an illustration of a simple bow with undivided string and gourd resonator attached near the centre of the stave but does not note its name. the instrument would seem to be a cross between the Zulu ugubhu, a simple bow with undivided string, but with the gourd resonator attached near the lower end of the stave, and the Zulu umakhweyana, a simple bow with the gourd resonator attached near the centre of the stave, but in which the string is divided by means of a loop which is secured within the centrally-located resonator. Angas (1849:p. 111 and p1. 25) also seems to have confused the two instruments. Plate 25 is an illustration of a young man playing what appears to be the ugubhu (although the gourd resonator is situated higher up the stave than is usual), but the drawing in the text (p. 111) in explanation of plate 25 shows a young man playing the umakhweyana. Thus, while the ugubhu is generally regarded as the older and more authentically Zulu of the two instuments (the umakhweyana being thought to have been borrowed from the Tsonga of Mozambique around the turn of the nineteenth century), it is apparent that, from at least the time of the first documentation of the Zulu, both instruments were in current usage.

Abstract:
The social (re) empowerment as a tool for successful aging." This present research is embedded within the scientific domain of Educational Sciences and has tried to provide answers to some relevant questions to the problems of the elderly, in order to enable an active and healthy aging. We have also added some of the concerns resulting from our pedagogical practice and the need to help the elderly remain active and independent, with a good quality of life through an educational / pedagogical, critical and reflective action. The empirical work took place at the Universidade Sénior de Évora and the Universidade Sénior de Reguengos de Monsaraz where we developed an intervention program with the elderly during an academic year, with the prospect of helping them empower themselves socially through social skills training and acquire abilities of the third dimension practice. This training aimed to direct the person to a cognitive ressignification of their experiences, turning them into a new meaning for the current and future life, as they age. It is a research-action and a study of a quasi-experiment type inserted in a qualitative methodology with an interpretive nature. For the feasibility of the project, we organized an innovative model of educational/pedagogical action related to an intervention program and involving dynamic techniques, with multi-faceted characteristics, such as the technique of mirroring and re-telling literary texts as a technical support. Our study has shown that our educational/pedagogical approach was able to provide significant improvements to those who collaborated with us in the sense that the social ability and skills of the third dimension training is possible for anyone at any age. Moreover, it was possible to lead the elderly to develop and acquire the ability to transcend the critical thinking, (re)empowering them socially. Through training, development and activation of these abilities and skills, the possibility for the elderly to know themselves better was notorious, to them, to others and the world around them. This project also helped them grow in terms of interpersonal relationships and intrapersonal skills thus improving their wellbeing and quality of life along with aging.

Abstract:
Water is vital for human s activity development and its use has to be permitted by a water Grant. The water grant s legal definition given by the law nº 9433/97 express the sustainable development principle, since its purpose is to quarantee water uses control in terms of quality and quantity, and also enable the acess of water implicitly to present and future generations. In this context, the-main goo of this Master thesis is to verify if water grant it self can be considered on instrument to the sustainable development. The question alluded us to the study of the Sergipe River water shed for its importance in the context of political, economic, social and cultural development of the state. During the researches, was verified that the water grants given made the economic activities development possible, but did not provide the environmental sustainability, never the less, the main result of this study is to find that water grant, in basin, only can be considered sustainable, in other words, became on instrument to promote the sustainable development, if they are implemented within a feedback water management instruments system, within on integration between user s sectors and water resources management sector, the preservation of multiple uses and water s quality and quantity indissolubility, and also the existence of water inspection on the users granted and now granted to quarantee the carry out of the law and the penalties application.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
An approach to map the various acoustic regimes of a wind instument is presented. In this work, the regimes are first classified based on the occurence or the lack of sound. Physically, the production of a sound corresponds to the existence of self-sustained oscillations in the resonator of the instrument, whereas the lack of sound is associated with a stable static regime. Another classification based on the sound frequency is also investigated. The maps are created in a space consisting of design and control parameters. The boundaries of the maps are obtained explicitly in terms of the parameters using a support vector machine classifier as well as a dedicated adaptive sampling scheme. The approach is applied to a simplified clarinet model.

Abstract:
Mechanical properties must be evaluated at high temperatures to predict high-temperature deformation and fracture behavior, since high-temperature properties differ greatly from those at room temperature. A high-temperature uniaxial tensile test, a representative high-temperature test, is generally used, but it has the limitation of obtaining merely the average material properties. Recently an advanced method for evaluating tensile properties has been developed: the instrumented indentation test (IIT), which simultaneously applies a load and measures displacement. Here we use instrumented indentation testing to evaluate the flow properties (yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, etc.) of heat-resistant steel at high temperature. The contact-area determination algorithm and representative stress-representative strain approach are applied for high temperatures. We compare our experimental results to those of conventional high-temperature uniaxial tensile testing to assess the high-temperature performance of the instumented indentation test.
