[Formulae and special characters can only be approximated here. Please see the pdf version of the Abtract for an accurate reproduction.] Type 2 diabetes at least doubles the risk of cardiovascular disease. This can partly be explained by the increased prevalence of risk factors such as hypertension, dyslipidaemia and obesity. However, the underlying abnormality of insulin resistance and the presence of more recently identified risk factors including endothelial dysfunction, increased inflammation, and increased oxidative stress might also contribute towards the heightened cardiovascular risk

Abstract:
Diabetic kidney disease remains the single most common cause of renal failure in UK, accounting for 26.9% of patients needing renal replacement therapy (UK renal registry, 2016). Mortality rates on RRT are worse for the diabetes population compared to the non-diabetic population. Diabetic patients on maintenance haemodialysis experience huge variation in their glycaemia, which is not well understood to guide appropriate therapy. ESRD patients are at higher risk of sudden cardiac death and arrhythmia is suspected to be a major cause. However there is no established guideline in detecting at ris

Abstract:
Self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) can be effective in preventing poor outcomes associated with diabetes mellitus but previous research has identified that SMBG is not being undertaken in line with current recommendations. Guidance informs health professionals to educate patients on how they should self-monitor but very little is know about how patients self-monitor in the real world. In this thesis, a quantitative scoping study is first presented. This study used routine data sources to examine the levels and patterns of self-montoring in different population groups and then proceeded to

Background: The practice of diabetes self-care plays an important role in glycaemic control. However, not all patients with insulin-treated diabetes engage in their self-care activities. Although there is evidence that self-care practices in patients with insulin-treated diabetes can be understood and predicted by health beliefs proposed by Health Belief Model (HBM), little is known about adult patients due to several methodological weaknesses of previous studies. Furthermore, knowledge is lacking about adults with insulin-treated diabetes in Malaysia. Aim: To examine whether health beliefs su
