Abstract:
This thesis provides three works which each contribute to understanding of the promising yet struggling market for rainfall index insurance in India. The first chapter contains an analysis of the willingness-to-pay (WTP) for rainfall insurance by poor farmers in Gujarat, India. It develops a theoretical model to predict individual WTP and contrasts it with emprical estimates of WTP using the Becker-DeGroot-Marshalk (BDM) mechanism. We find that BDM works well as a predictor of WTP, but that our model significantly overestimates WTP. The second chapter seeks to provide a possible explanation fo

Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) in the health sector are essential in light of the challenges the public sector is facing in healthcare finance, provision and management. Recognizing the need to provide insurance coverage to those below the poverty line (BPL), Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) was introduced in 2008 by the Ministry of Labour and Employment in India. RSBY is a social health insurance scheme for the informal sector, where health care delivery and management involves a multitude of stakeholders from both public and private sectors who are governed by contractual agreements

Recent research has extended the OBM to incorporate other institutional stakeholders who participate in the multi-level, multi-party iterative political bargaining over policy issues which characterises much of the bargaining now to reflect the widespread macroeconomic changes from globalization that impinge on the model. Furthermore, the emergence of developing countries like India and China as high growthend markets has conceivably changed the nature of bargaining therein. This study adopts a t

Micro health insurance (MHI), a healthcare financing tool in the developing world, is the focus of this thesis. MHI is increasingly being seen as a transitional mechanism to establish large-scale health insurance systems, which can potentially turn out-of-pocket (OOP) payments into a pre-payment system that spreads the financial risks associated with ill health across a wide range of clients. Globally, developing countries have the largest proportion of healthcare spending financed by OOP payments.
