Abstract:
Tests of the importance of precautionary saving follow several research strategies. One aims to find a variable (or set of variables) that can approximate the variance of the growth rate of consumption. A second strategy seeks to estimate a reduced form for the level of consumption and wealth with proxies for income risk. A third approach simulates the path of consumption and wealth in models with precautionary saving, matching simulations with the observed distribution of wealth and consumption. Other studies provide indirect evidence for or against the precautionary saving hypothesis. Finall

Every year thousands of people are kidnapped for ransom. Their families, friends, or employers are forced into a fiendishly complex and harrowing transaction with violent criminals to retrieve them. How do you agree a ‘fair’ price for a loved one—who may be tortured or killed as you deliberate? How do you securely deliver a sack of cash to the criminals’ lair? What compels kidnappers to uphold their end of the bargain after payment? Well-off individuals, profitable firms, and international NGOs operate surprisingly safely in areas of high and extreme kidnap risks. Many of them have bought kidn

This chapter focuses on the (inwards) facultative reinsurance provided by a Bermuda Form insurer of specific risks notionally or actually underwritten by captive insurers. It highlights a number of features of the reinsurance policies employed by the major insurers and certain of the issues that can arise therefrom. A definitive discussion is not possible, not least because of the wide varieties of wordings used by insurers. At one end of the spectrum, some established insurers have developed sophisticated pro forma reinsurance policy wording that they regularly use; at the other end of the sp

According to modern portfolio theory (MPT), rational market participants make most decisions and seek to be compensated for additional risk. However, investors sometimes behave irrationally owing to preconceived notions and biases based on past experience. Behavioral finance offers an alternative view to MPT, suggesting that individuals often make irrational decisions. This chapter explores how individuals make decisions to buy different types of insurance, even when faced with predicable outcomes involving the frequency and severity of the loss. That is, individuals appear to buy insurance on

Abstract:
Why cyberinsurance has not improved cybersecurity and what governments can do to make it a more effective tool for cyber risk management. As cybersecurity incidents—ranging from data breaches and denial-of-service attacks to computer fraud and ransomware—become more common, a cyberinsurance industry has emerged to provide coverage for any resulting liability, business interruption, extortion payments, regulatory fines, or repairs. In this book, Josephine Wolff offers the first comprehensive history of cyberinsurance, from the early “Internet Security Liability” policies in the late 1990s to th
