Abstract:
This chapter discusses intangibles not transferable by reason of public policy. In the case of certain sums receivable in the future, reasons of public policy preclude their assignment. The cases in this area tend to have a Dickensian feel to them—such as the rule that no effectual assignment can be made of the salaries or pensions of public officers payable to them for the purpose of keeping the dignity of their office or to ensure the due discharge of their duties—but the same sort of policy underlies the current statutory prohibitions on the assignment of social security benefits and pay in respect of a person's service in Her Majesty's military forces.

Abstract:
The global decision-making methodology is a simple and effective tool for decision-making. It bypasses the need to determine the cost of service or cost of product as well as the product’s or service’s profit. Global decision-making methodology works well for pricing decisions, make-or-buy decisions, termination of services, bid pricing, determining service mix, and investment decisions. The methodology consists of three stages and provides practical tools for decision-making such as the measurement profile and the cost-utilization diagram. The methodology takes into consideration economic benefits as well as strategic benefits and intangible ones. It is simple to use, intuitive, and clear to communicate.

Abstract:
Focusing on three communities in North, Central, and South America, Earth Politics and Intangible Heritage layers archaeological research with local knowledge in its interpretations of these cultural landscapes. Using the perspective of Earth Politics, Christie demonstrates a way of reconciling the tension between Western scientific approaches to history and the more intangible heritage derived from Indigenous oral narratives and social memories. Jessica Christie presents case studies from Canyon de Chelly National Monument on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, United States; the Yucatec Maya village of Coba in Quintana Roo, Mexico; and the Aymara town of Copacabana on Lake Titicaca, Bolivia. Each of these places is home to a longstanding community located near ancient archaeological sites, and in each case residents relate to the ruins and the land in ways that anchor their histories, memories, identities, and daily lives. Christie’s dual approach shows how these ancestral groups have confronted colonial power structures over time, as well as how the Christian religion has impacted traditional lifeways at each site. Based on extensive field experiences, Christie’s discussions offer productive strategies for scientific and Indigenous wisdoms to work in parallel directions rather than in conflict. The insights in this book will serve as building blocks for shaping a regenerative future—not only for these important heritage sites but also for many others across the globe.

Regelski, Thomas A. Curriculum Philosophy and Theory for Music Education Praxis. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197558690.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Curriculum Philosophy and Theory for Music Education Praxis is offered for advanced pre-service music education students, in-service teachers, and doctoral students. “Curriculum” is often poorly understood by music teachers. It also is a typically ignored topic in their teacher training where emphasis is on “methods,” but without prior planning of the musical goals those methods supposedly serve. The basic question of curriculum planning in this book, “What of all that could be taught is most worth learning?,” is not usually what teachers usually have in mind. In any case, too often their answers are not supportable by the rigorous philosophical and theoretical scholarship of this monograph. The result is the present anarchy of “programs” that fails to promote pragmatic and long-lasting results. This leads to the ever-growing “legitimation crisis” that advertises the aesthetic benefits of music education in schools. However, since these benefits are vague and intangible, music teachers constantly must engage in “advocacy” of their “programs.” This scholarly monograph accepts that pre- and in-service readers can understand the challenges of curriculum planning. It begins with a brisk survey of philosophies of music and music education inherited from the Greeks—included because they too often still dominate contemporary music teaching in negative ways. Then more recent and substantial bases of music curriculum and praxis theory of music and music education are examined as alternatives for planning curriculum built on intellectually substantial philosophical and theoretical grounds. The study concludes with a model curriculum based on recent praxis theory where musical and educational benefits are evident to students, administrators, and taxpayers and lead to “artful” living through music.

Abstract:
Public heritage practice in American cities has largely focused on the physical landscape of the European-based majority culture. As the nation’s urban areas continue to become more culturally diverse, preservationists have begun to explore new approaches to serve the needs of minority populations through community development planning. Examples include programs in San Francisco that focus less on physical fabric and more on the intangible cultural aspects associated with marginalized groups, and the work of Project Row Houses in Houston, which uses the historic building fabric of an African-American minority community as a canvas for expressing the group’s experience within the majority society. While US public heritage practice still lags behind in its representation of America’s diversity, the ability of preservationists to combine more subjective tools like intangible culture and artistic place-making with community development planning can help prevent the displacement of minority cultures from their traditional locations due to development pressure.

Chapdelaine, Pascale. Digital Locks, Physical Objects, and Immaterial Works. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198754794.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter looks at the tangible and intangible property divide through the effect of technological protection measures on a larger pool of users than traditional copyright users: that is, those inadvertent copyright users who buy, for example, a car or a tractor without suspecting that it embeds copyright works (e.g., software), let alone digital locks blocking access to important components of the physical object. The chapter explains how the adoption of legal regimes of technological protection measures worldwide shifted the paradigm for copyright users by redefining the rules of engagement of how they access and experience digital works. It explores how the progressive intrusion and enforcement of digital locks in the world of physical objects will either trigger favourable legal reform for copyright users, or will further trivialize user rights. It examines the changing role of technological protection measures, as users increasingly access copyright works through services.

Paredes Murcia, Andrés. Costeo y precio de venta de una habitación en el sector hotelero. Editorial Uniagustiniana, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.28970/ua.nc.2018.n17.

Abstract:

Kibbe, Jennifer D. Covert Action. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acrefore/9780190846626.013.135.

Full text
Abstract:
Covert action presents a potential policy for decision makers who want something quicker or more muscular than diplomacy but less expensive and obtrusive than military force. In contrast with intelligence, which entails collecting and analyzing information, covert action is an active instrument of foreign policy. The three main categories of covert action include propaganda, political action, and paramilitary action. Another separate category is economic action, which involves destabilizing the target state’s economy in some way. Because of the inherent secrecy of covert action, outside scholars have no way of knowing how much they do or do not know about the topic at hand and it also makes it hard to verify the information, since the information comes from a variety of sources. Covert action literature is particularly strong in case studies of particular operations. There is also a well-developed subsection within the field that focuses on covert action since the end of the Cold War, the role that the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) played during World War II, and covert actions undertaken by other states. However, there are several issues in the covert action literature. These issues include the assessment of the success or failure of particular operations and of the policy instrument as a whole, the tangible and intangible costs incurred by covert action, the ethical questions raised by conducting covert actions as well as the particular methods used and its impact on democracy, the oversight of covert action, and the evolution of US law covering covert action.

Chakma, Bhumitra. South Asian Regionalism. Policy Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1332/policypress/9781529205152.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The book explains the politics of regionalism in South Asia from the vantagepoint of International Relations (IR). It engages three major IR theoretical approaches – Neorealism, institutionalism and constructivism - to explain the complex dynamics of South Asian regionalism – its origin, evolutionary process, outcome and effects. The study traces the origins and evolution of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) from its inception to the present day. Using comparative perspectives based on the experiences of similar regional organisations, the book provides an in-depth analysis of the performance of SAARC and its challenges and limits. The study divides the evolution of SAARC into two distinct phases. In the formative phase, the organisation primarily focussed on, based on the neo-functional idea of ‘spillover’ – low level issue areas for cooperation. In the second phase from 1993 onward, cooperation was initiated in the core economic areas, i.e. trade in goods and services, finance, investment etc. While the organisation achieved some tangible and intangible successes, its failures are more glaring. Terming the formation of SAARC essentially as a political project, the book argues that the patterns of regional international relations have primarily determined the outcome of regionalism in South Asia. While the socio-economic development constituted the key rationale for the formation of SAARC, its modus operandi was politico-strategic which led to its gradual erosion. Notwithstanding its limits, the book asserts that SAARC will have to be called back at a future date due to the persistence of the compelling rationale for which it was created.
