Introduction The implementation of integrated care models requires significant efforts, especially due to institutional and organisational inertial forces that characterize health and social care systems of developed countries. It is therefore crucial to deploy strategies that promote continuous adjustment to these barriers so as to improve the benefits of integrating care. Measuring the implementation and effects of integrated care models are key component of these strategies. However, measuring integrated care also faces major challenges. Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter introduces the concept of sense of coherence which is a core concept in the salutogenic model defined by Aron Antonovsky. The salutogenic model posits that sense of coherence is a global orientation, where life is understood as more or less comprehensible, meaningful, and manageable. A strong sense of coherence helps the individual to mobilize resources to cope with stressors and manage tension successfully with the help of identification and use of generalized and specific resistance resources. Through this mechanism, the sense of coherence helps determine one’s movement on the health ease/dis-ease continuum. Antonovsky developed an instrument named Orientation to Life Questionnaire to measure the sense of coherence which exists in two original versions: a 29-item and a 13-item version. This chapter presents the measurement of the sense of coherence and the validity and reliability of the 13-item scale. It gives a brief overview of empirical research of the role of sense of coherence in association with mental health and quality of life and also on sense of coherence in different patient groups including nursing home residents, patients with coronary heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and mental health problems. It also briefly discusses the implications of using salutogenesis in health care services and the importance of implementing this perspective in meeting with different patient groups. The salutogenic approach may promote a healthy orientation toward helping the patient to cope with everyday stressors and integrate the effort regarding how to help the patient manage to live with disease and illness and promote quality of life.

AbstractThis chapter integrates the results of three pilots developed within the framework of the Horizon 2020 DataBio project. It aims to provide a broad picture of how products based on Earth Observation techniques can support the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy requirements, whose fulfillments are supervised by National and Local Paying Agencies operating in Romania, Italy and Greece. The concept involves the use of the same data sources, mainly multitemporal series of Copernicus Sentinel-2 imagery, but through three different Big Data processing chains, tailored to each paying agency’s needs in terms of farm compliance assessment. Particularities of each workflow are presented together with examples of the results and their accuracy, calculated by validation against independent sources. Business value aspects for each use case are also discussed, emphasizing the way in which the automation of the CAP requests verification process through satellite technologies has increased the efficiency and reduced cost and time resources for the subsidy process. We end the chapter by highlighting the benefits of continuous satellite tracking as a substitute, but also complementary to the classical field control methods, and also the enormous potential of Earth Observation-based products for the agri-food market.

Abstract:
AbstractThe wide implementation of patient safety improvement efforts continues to face many barriers including insufficient involvement of all stakeholders in healthcare, lack of individual and organizational learning when medical errors occur and scarce investments in patient safety. The promotion of systems-based approaches offers methods and tools to improve the safety of care. A multidisciplinary perspective must include the involvement of patients and citizens as fundamental contributors to the design, implementation, and delivery of health services. The patient journey is a challenging example of using a systems approach. The inclusion of the patient’s viewpoint and experience about their health journey throughout the time of care and across all the care settings represents a key factor in improving patient safety. Patient engagement ensures that the design of healthcare services are aligned with the values, the preferences, and needs of the patient community and integrates the real-life experience and the skills of the people to enhance patient safety in the patient journey. The utmost priority to implement patient engagement is the training of patients. Therefore, training for both patients/families/advocates and health professionals is the foundation on which to build active engagement of patients and consequently an effective and efficient patient journey. The chapter offers examples of successful training courses designed to foster strategic alliances among healthcare professionals and researchers with patients and their organizations. Training of patients constitutes the first step to develop shared knowledge, co-produced projects, and the achievement of active multilevel participation of patients for the implementation of patient safety in the patient journey.

Abstract:
AbstractLaboratory medicine in the healthcare system has recently been recognized as a fundamental service in the clinical decision-making process. Therefore, the notion of patient safety in laboratory medicine must be recognized as the assurance that harm to patients will be avoided, safe care outcomes will be enhanced through error prevention, and the total testing process (TTP) will be continuously improved.Although the goal for patient safety is zero errors, and although laboratory professionals have made numerous efforts to reduce errors in the last few decades, current research into laboratory-related diagnostic errors highlights that: (a) errors occur at every step of the TTP, mainly affecting phases at clinical interfaces; (b) despite the improvement strategies adopted, analytical quality remains a challenge; (c) errors are linked not only to clinical chemistry tests, but also to new, increasingly complex diagnostic testing.Medical laboratories must therefore implement effective quality assurance tools to identify and prevent errors in order to guarantee the reliability of laboratory information. Accreditation in compliance with the International Standard ISO 15189 represents the first step, establishing processes with excellence requirements and greater expectations of staff competency. Another important step in preventing errors and ensuring patient safety is the development of specific educational and training programs addressed to all professionals involved in the process, in which both technical and administrative skills are integrated. A wide variety of information is provided by a robust quality management system and consensus-approved Quality Indicators (QI) that identify undesirable events, evaluate the risk to the patient, and call for corrective and preventive actions. However, the effectiveness of the system depends on the careful analysis of data collected and on staff awareness of the importance of laboratory medicine to the healthcare process. The main task of the new generation of laboratory professionals should be to gain experience in “clinical laboratory stewardship.” In order to safeguard patients, laboratory professionals must assist clinicians in selecting the right test for the right patient at the right time and facilitate the interpretation of laboratory information.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive pulmonary disease characterized by reduction in airflow and is not fully reversible. COPD is the major cause of mortality and increased levels of disability, particularly in the elderly. Symptoms vary among individuals and include breathlessness, dyspnea, abnormal sputum and chronic cough. Exposure to tobacco smoke is by far the most important risk factor in the development of COPD and is associated with high levels of morbidity and mortality. In this chapter the authors will present a system for the integrated care of COPD focusing on prevention and intervention.

Abstract:
SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar ) systems are special types of radar that produce high resolution images (comparable to optical sensors) in all weather conditions, night and day. SAR sensors have many applications in marine and arctic applications. In this paper a compact SAR prototype system is developed for UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) platform. The radar is based on FMCW (Frequency-Modulated Continuous-Wave) radar mode. The system integrates a high performance RTK (Real Time Kinematic) GPS and IMU (inertial measurement unit) based motion compensation module, FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Arr

Abstract:
The essence of continuum mechanics, the internal response of materials to external loading, is often obscured by the complex mathematics of its formulation. Rather than introducing solid and fluid behavior as two distinct fields and waiting for an advanced course to demonstrate the mathematical connections between them, we have developed an integrated introduction to both fields. We will discuss the eight-year history of this course at Harvey Mudd and Lafayette Colleges, and the course materials we have developed. This one semester course covers material typically spread over several courses,

Abstract Objectives/Scope The benefits of real-time estimation of the cool down time of Subsea Production System (SPS) to prevent formation of hydrates are shown on a real oil and gas facility. The innovative tool developed is based on an integrated approach, which embeds a proxy model of SPS and hydrate curves, exploiting real-time field data from the Eni Digital Oil Field (eDOF, an OSIsoft PI based application developed and managed by Eni) to continuously estimate the cool down time before hydrates are formed during the shutdown. The importance of computer aided engineering (CAE) in product development processes and research has been increasing throughout the past years. Consequently, optimization tools gained more and more importance. In state-of-the-art processes and methods concerning structural optimization it is assumed that there exists a set of external loads or load functions acting on the part. Very often modern products represent complex mechatronic system. The fact that the system’s dynamic properties and its overall behaviour may change due to geometric modifications of a part caused by an optimization proc

Abstract:
The use of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) in consumer products has expanded rapidly, revealing both innovative improvements over conventional materials, and the potential for novel risks to human health and the environment. As the number of new nano-enabled products and the volume of toxicity data on ENMs continues to grow, regulatory agencies like the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) – a small, independent federal agency responsible for protecting consumers from unreasonable risks associated with product use – will require the ability to screen and group a diverse array of nano
