Abstract:
The dividing line between specialised lexicography and terminography is non-existent. The focus of preparing dictionaries for a particular subject-field should be the needs of its user group in specific situations. This is catered for by the modern theory of dictionary functions and includes the introduction of subject-field components in dictionaries. Dictionary functions are communication-orientated or cognition-orientated, and the lexicographers must identify the relevant functions and select and present the data so that the dictionary satisfies the needs of the users. The optimal dictionary contains aided fully integrated subject-field components that supplement and complement the data included in the articles.

Abstract:
AbstractCognitive load theory has been utilized by second language acquisition (SLA) researchers to account for differences in learner performance with regards to different learning tasks. Certain instructional designs were shown to have an impact on cognitive load and working memory, and this impact was found to be accentuated in a multimedia environment where there is a variety of interacting elements and tools that can lead to cognitive overload and consequently reduced learning outcomes. This study investigated the influence of split-attention and integrated instructional formats on students’ cognitive load and how they might facilitate second language online reading and vocabulary learning. Twenty English as a Second Language (ESL) intermediate students studying at an Australian language institution were randomly assigned to four conditions: SAND (Split-Attention No Dictionary), SAOD (Split-Attention with Online Dictionary), IFND (Integrated Format No Dictionary), and IFOD (Integrated Format with Online Dictionary). Subjects were asked to complete an online reading comprehension task in which subjects tested under the SAND and SAOD conditions were exposed to a typical reading text followed by comprehension questions, whereas subjects in the IFND and IFOD conditions were exposed to a reading text where the comprehension questions were physically inserted within the reading text. Under the SAOD and IFOD conditions, subjects had access to an online dictionary. Results showed that the integrated reading format was found to facilitate students’ reading comprehension more than the split-attention format. Also, students who had access to the online dictionary in the SAOD and IFOD groups performed better on the vocabulary test, but spent more time on the reading task than the other two groups. Furthermore, participants in the split-attention format group looked up more words than their counterparts in the integrated format group. The results of the present study have certain implications for multimedia instructional designers and ESL teachers.

Abstract:
Valence dictionaries are very often specialized works for advanced readers which present how particular linguistic units combine with its subordinates. The article is a critical analysis of a dictionary entry for the lexical unit of reward contained in A Valency Dictionary of English, a Corpus-Based Analysis of the Complementation Patterns of English Verbs, Nouns and Adjectives [2004]. A complementary proposal regarding the predicate-argument structure and its annotation system will be provided based on the theoretical model proposed by S. Karolak [1984; 2002] called Semantic Syntax (SS) and more specifically its extended model called explicative syntax [Kiklewicz et al. 2010; 2019]. The research findings demonstrate the need for coordinated international projects that should integrate both the syntactic as well as the semantic levels in order to gradually meet the objective of an integrated language description encompassing both the grammar and the lexicon.

Abstract:
In this work we refer to dictionary based test data compression methods. At first the already known dictionary based test data compression methods are comparably presented. Then we propose a new method and we show that the test data compression achieved by a dictionary based method can be improved significantly by suitably reusing parts of the dictionary entries. To this end two new algorithms are proposed, suitable for partial and complete dictionary coding respectively. For the evaluation of the proposed method, test sets have been generated and used based on the stuck-at fault model for single and N detection of each fault as well as on the transition fault model.

Chiphambo, Shakespear Maliketi Elias Kapirima. "A case study : investigating a model that integrates dictionary and polygon pieces in teaching and learning of geometry to grade 8 learners." Thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/25598.

Full text
Abstract:
Considering that geometry is taught according to certain principles that do not encourage creativity, I have decided to employ the mixed methods philosophical framework applying the concurrent transformative design in the form of an exploratory case study. The case study to (i) explore and design a model that influences learning using polygon pieces and mathematics dictionary in the teaching and learning of geometry to grade 8 learners; (ii) investigate if the measurement of angles and sides of polygons using polygon pieces assisted by mathematics dictionary promote learners’ comprehension of geometry and (iii) investigate how mathematics teachers should use polygon pieces along with mathematics dictionary to teach properties of triangles in order to promote learners’ conceptual understanding. Drawing from my research findings a model has been developed from the use of polygon pieces and mathematics dictionary. The model use of mathematics dictionary in teaching and learning geometry is to develop learners’ mathematics vocabulary and terminology proficiency. Polygon pieces are to enhance the comprehension of geometric concepts. The quantitative data emerged from marked scripts of the diagnostic and post-intervention tests, the daily reflective tests and intervention activities were analysed as percentages and presented in line and bar graphs. Qualitative data obtained from observation notes and transcribed interviews were analysed in three forms: thematically, constant comparison and keywords in context. These findings support other research regarding the importance of using physical manipulatives with mathematics dictionary in teaching and learning geometry. They align with other findings that stress that manipulatives are critical facilitating tools for the development of mathematics concepts. The investigations led into the designing of a teaching model for the topic under study for the benefit of the mathematics community in the teaching and learning of geometry, focusing on properties of triangles. The model developed during this study adds to the relatively sparse teaching models but growing theoretical foundation of the field of mathematics.

Abstract:
Abstract Sparse image reconstruction techniques have been used to recover high frequency information lost during the acquisition process in different imaging domains, such as ultrasound, synthetic aperture radar, optical microscopy, and astronomical and microscopic imaging. In this work, a signal processing framework is proposed to estimate the Point Spread Function (PSF) of the dark-field subsurface microscopy system from observation data. This PSF is incorporated into an image reconstruction framework, which can be formulated with two different image reconstruction techniques, regularized image reconstruction and dictionary-based image reconstruction. It is observed that both techniques provide at least 12% resolution improvement; lines with 224 nm spacing were localized after resolution improvement while lines with 252 nm spacing are at the limit of localization in experimental data. However, dictionary-based image reconstruction provides higher edge resolution and maintains the homogeneity of the intensity within the structures.

Abstract:
Abstract With the increased use of computer-aided engineering tools in the development of weapons systems hardware and software, the design of these systems is now represented by a series of design (CAD - computer-aided design/CASE - computer-aided software engineering) data bases as opposed to a collection of documents, listings and drawings. These design data bases are the design masters and other design information can be derived from the data bases via selected automation tools. Effective and efficient design data management is key to the transition of the design information to the factory or the field. The effective management of these electronic “design objects” requires the tight coupling of the design data bases with the configuration identification/management data base. This design management data base, in addition to controlling the system/product definition and configuration, can be thought of as the data dictionary for the design information (the design data base as well as its derived outputs). Electronic and Information System Group (EISG) Paramax Systems Corporation is in the process of developing an integrated system/product configuration management and design data management system. This system will utilize optical storage, imaging, networking, and relational data base technologies: and “open system” architecture and commercial off-the-shelf components. It will also serve as a platform for supporting the government’s computer-aided acquisition and logistics support (CALS)/contractor integrated technical information services (CITIS) initiatives.

Abstract:
Abstract STEP (International Standard for Product Data Representation and Exchange) is considered to be a key for the integration and exchange of product models. To achieve this objective the fundamental concept of Application Protocol has been developed. The design of an Application Protocol is composed of various processes based on different techniques. This design is vast, iterative and complex. Therefore, it seems to be necessary to develop a tool assisting the design of an Application Protocol. In this paper we describe SMGS (STEP Model Generator System), a tool that gets the different application user models and gives the corresponding STEP models and verifies the uniqueness of these models. The problems encountered using the first prototype of this tool, in the crane industry’s domain are discussed. This prototype consists of three major components: user interface module, Integrated Resources mapping module and uniqueness testing module. The object-oriented methodology is used to design the user interface. With this interface, the expert of the application’s domain, with help of data dictionary built in system, can easily access to the integrated resource models of STEP and can specialize these resources.
