Schriek, Max. Archaeological Approaches to and Heritage Perspectives on Modern Conflict. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463729857.

Abstract:
From a wider disciplinary perspective, modern conflict archaeology is now a thoroughly established and mature sub-discipline. However, a significant problem conflict archaeologists in the Netherlands face is that modern eras, including both World Wars, have so far not received serious attention. Although both World Wars appeal strongly to the popular imagination, until recently Dutch researchers had not approached modern conflict from an academic archaeological perspective to any great extent. This is partly the result of problematic legislation on archaeological activity in the Netherlands. When applied and interpreted appropriately, archaeology can play an important role in the preservation, contemporary experience and historical reconstruction of recent conflicts. However, as this book argues, research methods other than excavations will be needed in order to conduct conflict archaeology in the Netherlands effectively. This study aims to develop a Dutch approach to conflict archaeology, integrating archaeology, heritage research and history at a landscape scale.

Abstract:
For 60 years, the Institute for European Politics (IEP) has studied Europe—containing contributions on all the eras of its history and fields of work by 23 authors involved in shaping this unique think tank, this book reflects the history of the IEP’s rich experience of research into politics and civil society. Rooted in the post-WWII Euro-federalist movements, the IEP has gained a reputation in Germany as a forward-thinking, advisory and agenda-setting think tank through interdisciplinary research and multiple publications, conferences and training courses, and Master’s and PhD programmes. The authors of this volume offer insights into historical evolutions and fields of research extending from the options for Europe at the time of the Rome Treaties to the EU’s Central Asia Strategy today, from the efforts to bind Central Europe into the European integration process after 1989 to challenges like further democratisation and increasing the efficiency of the EU’s system. Abstract:
Since Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, Americans have viewed school integration as a central tenet of the Black civil rights movement. Yet school integration was not the only—or even always the dominant—civil rights strategy. At times, African Americans also fought for separate, Black-controlled schools dedicated to racial uplift, community empowerment, and self-determination. An African American Dilemma offers a social history of debates over school integration within northern Black communities from the 1840s to the present. This broad geographical and temporal focus reveals that northern Black educational activists vacillated between a preference for either school integration or separation during specific eras. However, there was never a consensus, so the dissent, debate, and counter-narratives that pushed families to consider a fuller range of educational reforms are also highlighted here. Presenting a sweeping historical analysis that covers the entire history of public education in the North, the book broadens our understanding of school integration by highlighting the diverse perspectives of Black students, parents, teachers, and community leaders all committed to improving public education. It finds that Black school integrationists and separatists have worked together in a dynamic tension that fueled effective strategies for educational reform and the Black civil rights movement. The book draws on an enormous range of archival data including the black press, school board records, social science studies, the papers of civil rights activists, and court cases.

Modir, Shahla J., Walter Ling, and George E. Muñoz. Integrative Approaches to Post-acute Withdrawal and Relapse Prevention. Edited by Shahla J. Modir and George E. Muñoz. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190275334.003.0031.

Abstract:
Dr. Walter Ling begins this chapter by discussing the distinction between the process of detoxification and role relapse prevention. He reviews the post acute withdrawal period, its neurobiological underpinnings, and discusses the role of stress hormones, neuro-circuity, and the importance of relapse prevention. The existential question as to why people take drugs is posed. Complex aspects of the neurobiology of post-acute withdrawal and subsequent treatment ramifications are reviewed. Drug-specific neurochemical changes are explained, including treatment to reduce cortisol and noradrenergic responses pharmacologically. Then the integrative approach to relapse prevention is reviewed by Dr. Munoz. The concept of “relapse prevention plan” is introduced and the roles of exercise, 12-step social support, and the use of novel neuro-diagnostics including Event Related Potentials (ERP) to aid in personalized risk stratification of potential future relapse. The importance and evidence of multidisciplinary approaches and social 12-step-type support are also reviewed and close out the neuroscience of the first 2 sections.

Sigurdson, Ola. Desire and Love. Edited by Adrian Thatcher. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199664153.013.37.

Full text
Abstract:
Desire and love have always been important themes in Christianity, but there is no self-evident meaning for either of these concepts. This chapter examines some important contributions in the history of theology to the understanding of each, and offers some steps towards a constructive theology that regards desire as an integrative part of love. If the problem with the dominant tradition during antiquity and the Middle Ages was that it separated eros from a legitimate sexuality, the problem of modern Christianity is that it has reduced desire to sexuality. It is not helpful to separate agape from eros, as this implies a theology for which important aspects of human longing fall outside its frame. An account of love that avoids narcissism and an economy of the same includes desire; a love without desire lacks the motor that moves us forward towards the other.

Bassiouni, M. Cherif. Human Rights and International Criminal Justice in the Twenty-First Century. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190272654.003.0002.

Abstract:
This chapter follows the emergence of human rights from their origins as commonly shared human and social values to their transformation into legal norms and into their inclusion in prescriptive and proscriptive international treaties. It examines the integration of human rights in regional systems as well as national constitutions and domestic legislation. After tracking their emergence and development, this chapter questions the continuing role of human rights in an increasingly globalised world, where the power and wealth interests of states often prevail over the enforcement of human rights. As realpolitik continues to threaten the development of international criminal justice initiatives that emerged in the post-WWII and post-Cold War eras, this chapter analyses the reality facing human rights and international criminal justice in a world of non-state actors, multinational corporations, and the increasing power of those who benefit from impunity and the infringement of human rights.
