Chapdelaine-Daoust, Myriam, and Myriam Chapdelaine-Daoust.
In recent years, Québec City has welcomed an increasing number of immigrants as well as a significant number of non-permanent residents, including more and more international students. This has given way to an even more diverse urban fabric. Half of the newcomers are women who, while experiencing most of the challenges shared by all immigrants, often face greater barriers due to a dual woman/immigrant status. On the other hand, immigrant women also have a capacity to act upon their lives and implement strategies to cope with their difficulties, including getting socially involved in the host society. This exploratory research focuses on one of these strategies – volunteering – through interviews with immigrant women who have volunteered in the early years of their lives in Quebec. The main objective of the research is to understand the role of volunteering with regard to the integration process. Some observations came out of our results. For the majority of participants, volunteering came in line with previous commitments while circumstances specific to post-migration could lead to changes in the types of volunteering they chose, the way they committed themselves and the motivations behind their choices. Interviewees have got involved according to their principles and values as well as their personal interests, but their immigrant status also carried additional motivations including the wish to create social

Full textMany studies have shown that social participation benefits elderly people’s health and well-being. However, the way in which social participation is presented in social policies and programs implies a kind of productive social participation that does not always correspond to the needs of elderly people with physical disabilities. The objective of this qualitative study is to document the perceptions that elderly people with physical disabilities have of their social participation. More specifically, it is to identify the factors that can facilitate or hinder their social participation. To do this, 11 semi-structured interviews were carried out with people who consider themselves to be elderly and who have physical disabilities affecting their mobility and/or agility. The interviews made it possible to gather the participants’ perceptions of social and environmental factors that can affect their social participation. The data were then analyzed using thematic content analysis within the analytical framework used in this thesis project: the Human Development Model – Disability Creation Process. The results of this research make it possible to identify the factors that can influence participants’ social participation. Personal factors include perceptions concerning the loss of physical abilities, ability to assert oneself and express one’s needs, adaptability and sociability. The most important environmental factors are friends’ and relatives’ attitudes, adaptation of community organizations’ services, climate, technology, adapted transport and societal attitudes toward people with disabilities. Recommendations are made regarding sensitization and adaptation strategies and avenues for further research based on the findings, with the aim of better supporting social participation by elderly people with physical disabilities.

Full textNumerous immigrants of different origins, customs, religions and languages are welcomed every year in theQuebec City area, resulting in a growing diversification of the population. The emergence of prejudices andstereotypes towards them is becoming an increasingly worrisome subject and can have concreterepercussions on their reality. Although the second half of the 20th century was marked by the development ofnumerous policies aimed at facilitating the integration of newcomers and the sensitization and openness of thehost society, daily interactions and discriminatory public expressions relating to hateful gestures and words arestill very present in this 21st century Quebec. Although the establishment of cultural mediation spaces inintercultural contexts can lead to greater cultural sensitivity, little research has been done on the effects ofinteractions on the mutual perceptions of natives and immigrants. Considering these different findings, theobjective of this study is to explore how prejudices evolve within an intercultural group experience. Therefore, this research questions how the interactional dynamics within the group can positively transform perceptions ofeach other. From the perspective of symbolic interactionism and social representation theory, this qualitativeresearch is based on the use of MICAM, a model based on mutual accompaniment, cooperation andintercultural mediation, offering a space for interactive exchange, sharing and reflection. Data was collectedfrom five native Quebecers and five immigrant Quebecers, participating in seven group workshops (MICAM)and two semi-directed qualitative interviews (pre- and post-group). The results collected show that this methodoffers sustained contact between individuals, and that listening, testimonials, transmission of information andself-reflection contribute to greater mutual recognition and the development of positive attitudes among thenative-born towards immigrants who interact in the group. These findings demonstrate the relevance ofoffering spaces for cultural mediation in intercultural contexts in order to improve interactions betweennewcomers and members of the host society

Full textFor the past ten years, Québec City has faced a significant increase in the number of newcomers. Among these people, many young adults settle in the Capitale-Nationale region with the objective of working and starting a family there. We observe that many young immigrant women will have their first child within the first two years of arrival in Quebec. While they are in the process of adapting to the new country, they will also have to deal with a new role, being a mother. This exploratory study looks at how their entry into maternity influences their social integration in a recent post-migration context. It is through a qualitative approach that eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with immigrant women living in the Quebec City area. It appears that for the women we met, the choice to immigrate is above all part of the family trajectory. The results of the study suggest that language barriers, precarious socio-economic status and psychological difficulties are considered by women as the main barriers to their social integration. Despite some challenges, the data indicates that many of them will have experienced the arrival of the child as an opportunity to strengthen their social integration and take root in their new country. For others, this double transition will be experienced more painfully by involving psychological difficulties acting as barriers to integration.

Full textThis master's project attempted to better understand the health-related changes occurring as a result of the experience of a literacy process, from the perspectives of learners who attended either of two community-based literacy groups in Quebec City. We sought not only to identify health outcomes in learners, but also to document the mechanisms explaining health-related changes, in order to identify elements of literacy processes which contribute to improve health. A qualitative study design was used, more specifically a narrative approach. Eleven semi-structured individual interviews, as well as two group interviews, were conducted with learners and ex-learners. Analysis of the data revealed a wide range of health-related effects of community literacy. Learners develop various skills that empower them to take greater control of their health. This is reflected in certain changes in their health behaviors, but also in more collective actions in line with health promotion. Our results also reveal that learners thrive through their literacy processes and develop a greater sense of well-being. Literacy allows them to realize themselves, build a social network and improve their self-image. Elements of the organizational culture of the community-based literacy groups stand out as contributing to improve the health of learners, including the collective approach, the non-judgment and respect, the power and space for expression that they have, as well as the opportunities which are offered to them to take action and experience success. Finally, the literacy practitioners seem to play a key role in improving the health of learners, because they embody the culture of community literacy and offer them listening and unwavering support tailored to their needs.

With recent Canadian and Quebec policies aiming to capitalize on immigration, the present research targets migrant students enrolled in a regional college located in the Province of Québec. The basic premise of this paper is that beyond external forces and constraints, each individual has a unique and singular migratory experience. Through the analysis of these personal experiences, the following research aims to better understand the underlying processes of this relative and evolutionary migration movement brought about by globalization. Young foreign-born adults registered in a technical program at the Institut maritime du Québec in Rimouski were interviewed regarding their mobility and cross-cultural experiences through different themes such as : migration motivations, factors relating to choice of destination, culture shocks, relationships, academic experience, coping strategies, effects of migration, sense of integration and belonging, perception of the host community and projects evolution. The results of this case study highlight important avenues of reflection on the experience of migrant students in regional areas and question the concordance between governmental strategies and individual logic and projects.

Full textThe current context of an aging population calls for more careful consideration of retirement homes, particularly in terms of social ties. After moving to a retirement home, many seniors want to continue to feel useful and to actively participate in society. The purpose of this qualitative research is to explore and better understand the perceptions and experiences of seniors living in retirement homes with respect to their social participation. We are looking at whether retirement homes encourage the accomplishment of life habits, if seniors are seen as active participants in the life of their community and whether they participate in leisure activities both inside and outside the retirement home. Eleven individual, semi-directed interviews were conducted with residents of retirement homes in the Capitale-Nationale region. The data was processed using the NVivo11 software and analyzed using a content analysis method. The Human Development Model - Disability Creation Process 2 guided the analysis of the data collected. The results provide a better understanding of the participatory biography of the participants in the study and identify the factors that may influence their social participation. In terms of results, our study identified several factors relating to personal life and the retirement home environment that influenced the social participation of residents. Regarding seniors’ personal lives, the most important factors are the use of satisfactory coping strategies, involvement in the community through volunteering or work, and the absence of health problems. From an environmental point of view, the main factors are geographical proximity to seniors’ support network, a varied range of activities and staff stability. The discussion provides answers to the research questions. Recommendations are made for intervention strategies and future research that would address the issues generated from this study. Full textThe object of this thesis is the construction of a social "expérience" among two generations of Haitians in Quebec, as captured through five "sociological interventions" during the 1990's. The first chapter presents the concepts used to construct an analytical schema of "expérience", that relates several elements: citizenship, racism, group identifications and participation. Chapter 2 presents the "Politics of Citizenship" in Canada and Quebec, and points out the historical transformations of ethnic relations and issues of pluralism. Chapter 3 examines the specificities and the "objective" living conditions of the Haitian population in Quebec in several spheres of social life. Chapter 4 analyzes the results of the "sociological interventions" and the articulation of the analytical elements by the actors to construct their own "expérience". The thesis concludes with a comparative synthesis of both generations and of group's "expérience"

Full textThe opposition between Canadian multiculturalism and French republicanism provides a partial response to the politicisation or depoliticization of the Haitian diaspora in France and Quebec. This thesis addresses this issue from the social determinants. From a transnational and comparative approach, this thesis tries to explain the political integration of this diaspora in these settlements and in the country of origin despite the various obstacles preventing their political participation: hostility of national actors, absence organization of voting abroad, citizenship exclusive to nationals and naturalized persons, very strict naturalization policy. Even though, they develop strategies that allow them to be both here and elsewhere. The development of social media amplifies this political participation. In the countries of settlement, Haitians and their descendants are in a logic of redefining a plural identity with elements from the country of origin, the host country and the diaspora. This thesis concludes that the politicisation of immigrants depends on their social status in the host country. However, the influence of political systems on the political integration of Haitian migrants should be considered. This is why Canadian multiculturalism seems more favorable to politicisation than the French republican system

Full textSince its outbreak in March 2011, the Syrian conflict has displaced more than 12 million individuals, who found themselves leaving their homes to seek refuge elsewhere. Among these people, 6.3 million are internally displaced and 5.3 million have left Syria, mostly for Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon. This paper explores the migration trajectories of Syria n refugees exiled in the Middle East and granted access to a resettlement program in Canada. Although some studies on refugee trajectories have mobilized the notion of social class, very few have taken a direct interest in its influence on the migratory process itself. Recent research reiterated the importance of considering social class as a variable in the analysis of migration trajectories by showing how the choice of itinerary seems to be dependent on the migrants’ resources, notably their economic and social resources. Thus, this project is looking at the impact of social class on the exile trajectories of Syrian refugees that resettled in Canada and proposes to introduce the analysis of social class in terms of access to different forms of capital — economic, social, cultural and spatial — and how belonging to a certain social class influences these trajectories. The results of our study show that, initially, during the migration to the first host country, access to resources influences positively the trajectory and experience of Syrians in exile in such a way that it favors individuals belonging to more privileged social classes. However, with regard to the process of resettlement in Canada, the results suggest the opposite. In fact, it is a greater vulnerability, characterized by limited access to resources, that inversely influences the trajectories of exile so as to favor the individual belonging to a more precarious class.
